Video: Attempting To Ride Every Bike Park Trail At Sun Peaks In A Weekend

Oct 27, 2021
by Pinkbike Originals

Between Field Test, Pinkbike Academy, and a number of other things, it has been a busy summer. So when the opportunity for a nice weekend away smashing laps at Sun Peaks Bike Park arose, I was all in. However, after watching Tom Bradshaw attempt to ride 100 trails in Cumberland earlier this summer, I knew I needed to spice things up a bit from the regular weekend riding trip. Now, I'm not opposed to climbing, but I much prefer descending and so for my challenge, I decided to try to ride every trail in Sun Peaks. I mean, what better way is there to spend the weekend than that? And just like that, another work project was born.

I was lucky enough to have Outdoorsy supporting this trip and because of that, I decided to rent a sweet RV for the weekend. Not only did that immediately solve my need for accommodation, but I was also able to camp out just a couple of hundred meters from the chairlift, a huge bonus when time is of the essence. I planned out a route a few days in advance that equated to about 15 laps, one of which would be a lengthy pedal around the top of the mountain. Because of the variety in trails, I decided to bring two bikes and swap between them based on the lap. I've ridden some of the trails in Sun Peaks, but definitely not all of them so an added challenge was riding blind. With a loose plan, a couple of bikes, and a home on wheels, it was time to see if I could actually make it happen.

The rigs all together ready for a weekend of fun.

This was my first time driving an RV and after some awkward parking lot maneuvers, it was smooth sailing.

I tried to design the difficulty of the laps to go from easy to hard to easy, which meant chill mornings and hectic afternoons.

Blind runs down Steam Shovel definitely get the ol' ticker going.

Full pucker pulling up into Insanity One.

There is no shortage of steep, technical trails in Sun Peaks.

I ended up riding the bottom berms on Bermalade four or five times to get back to the chair. No complaints here though.

And just like that, we were done and the drive home to get some rest before hitting the e-mails Monday morning began.

All in all, I rode pretty much every trail at the Sun Peaks Bike Park. There were some closures that kept me from doing a couple of sections of trail, but I think the XC pedal on day one made up for that. Going in, I knew the challenge was tough but possible and I was pumped that my soft computer hands were able to hold on through all the laps. Huge thanks to Outdoorsy for supporting the trip and providing the palace on wheels. I hope this inspires you to go out and try something different the next time a weekend opens up in your calendar!

Great job, Jason! You're quickly becoming my favorite PB employee...you have serious leadership potential here at Outside - the world's largest recreation media conglomerate!

Have you considered applying to be my EA!?!

Robin, There are typo's in your job posting! No wonder you are looking for a new EA!

@skimtb1: Thank you, skimtb. I'm confident @jasonlucas would have caught it!

"Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission."

Thats pretty lame Robin - what about a guaranteed bonus or commission so that your EA can buy an entry level Cannondale Topstone.

 @notoutsideceo Wait, where's your Outside+ badge?!

@ifhtfilms: We've removed it from ALL users, IFHT...it was bad for the reputation of the brand to have every comment with it get downvoted faster than my ebike tackles technical climbs!

 If it’s guaranteed it’s not a bonus or commission - it’s base salary. @kcoyle7:

@ElDebarge: This guy is talking like the CFO I need! Pinching pennies at the entry levels to ensure my bonus can afford me that new Cybertruck! Send me a PM, I'll link you with Outside HR, EID!

 Getting old yet? (Er….yes)

@ElDebarge: Don't be daft. Brian Park regularly chats in the comment section and I appreciate that he does. Now that Pinkbike has acquired Outside, it makes absolute sense that the Outside CEO comments here too.

I once did this same challenge in a small mountain village at a relatively unknown resort called Snow Summit. It took me two hours.

Excellent article, I would pose the challenge of Whistler for you next year!

I’m game but it’d probably take more than a weekend, haha.

@jasonlucas: it can take all weekend to get through a lineup…

In 2010 that was actually feasible. Myself and two others managed every trail in the bike park in one day (we had to push back up to Crabapple after riding Crabapple Turns or Angry Pirate or something I think, otherwise it was going to be another whole lap instead of a 3 minute walk). We also did a lap of Hey Bud before the park opened, as well as hitting Trespasser somewhere along the line and then Ride Don't Slide at the end of the day. I think it was about 11,000m of descending all told. I'm not sure you could do everything even in 2 days now though, there's so many little connector trails like Rod & Todd, Dwayne Johnson, 20 variants of Golden Triangle, and an extra 900km of machine built blue flow trails to fall asleep on. Not to mention TOTW and Creekside.

That was a great video @jasonlucas, your stoke is infectious. I'm pumped and ready to ride some park laps...oh wait everything is closed...f***.

Also sad about bike parks being closed now. Frown

I just want to point out how refreshing it is to have an author or reviewer type, "I" instead of "we." You know... "We finished our breakfast and started driving our RV to the bike park. We played a game of solitaire before we rode the single chairlift to the top."

Also, how incognito is Robin, really? He (or she) is likely the only person named Robin to be the CEO. Or, really, the only person at all to be THE CEO. Haha.

smh when he said "my watch says its 9:55", no more than 20 seconds later he turned his wrist and you could see that it was 9:31 lol

 That's what I would do!
40km+ days were the norm at the Megavalanche week,I think I did 220km on all 7 days combined once (been there 7 times).
Keep it up,Jason!

Haha, the German version would be... the hitting every trail in Winterberg in one hour challenge ... the size of your parks is just amazing, Canada take me back!

You mean ride all the trails in a day? You definitely don't need a whole weekend =D

I think you guys forgot to include where Sun Peaks is and a little more information about the place for those that have never heard of it.
