PRESS RELEASE: BikePark Wales

BikePark Wales will be 5 years old this August and it's been an incredible journey so far. Over the last 5 years, we've continually invested in the business, predominantly focussing on the trails and we've seen the network grow in size and quality during that period. Now though, it's time for a step change and to spread the development focus so that not only the trails but other aspects of the site see some love too. As part of a major new investment programme, BikePark Wales will see improvements throughout 2018 and into 2019 and beyond. Our aim has always been to create an inclusive bike park that is fun for all riders and to create a facility that is world class in all aspects.

photo

First up (excuse the pun!) will be the uplift road. Those of you that have visited the site in the last few weeks will have noticed that there are major works on the road underway right now. We are widening the road so that vehicles can pass without having to stop and wait at the limited number of laybys currently on the road. This is a big project and will take some time but it will allow our uplift to run more efficiently meaning more runs and less waiting time at the bottom. Also, keep your eyes peeled mid-summer for a very exciting new uplift vehicle that we will be trialling on site, we can’t wait to get our hands on it!

photo

We will also be introducing a trial in the next few weeks to sell uplift tickets in a different way, the aim being that all customers get an equally great experience on the hill. We will be releasing specific information on this trial soon so keep your eyes peeled.

Slightly less glamorous but equally important is the addition of services to the site. BikePark Wales is currently off-grid for water, electricity and phone/internet and at peak times all of these services are stretched to the limit, believe us, we feel your pain when the bike wash conks out! The good news is that we are biting the bullet and pulling out all the stops to bring mains water, electricity and phone line to the park, it’s a very complex and hugely expensive project that will take some time but we are committed to making this happen during 2018. This will allow us to offer a much more reliable service and who knows, we may even be able to offer customer Wifi soon.

photo

Next up is the Woodland Café, we’ve hired an extremely talented and very enthusiastic executive Chef (Nathan) who has joined our existing team to completely redesign our food offering. Armed with your feedback and years of experience Nathan is busy planning and designing as we speak. Expect to see some changes not only to the menu but to the Café itself in the coming months. Judging by the dishes we’ve sampled so far, we are in for a treat!

What about the trails? We couldn’t put in all this work and ignore the trails could we, that’s what we all love the most?! The good news is that the trails are getting plenty of focus too, you’ll have noticed that many of our classic trails (Terry’s Belly, Wibbly Wobbly, Melted Welly to name a few) have had major facelifts over the last few months and A470 Line is currently getting some love ready for the summer.

photo

In addition to this though, we’ve got the biggest trail building project since the park opened underway right now. During June the National Grid are replacing the distribution network cables that cross part of BikePark Wales and as a result we, unfortunately, have to close some trails (lower Terry’s Belly, Hot Stepper, Root Manouvres and 50 Shades of Black) during June. However, the National Grid have been fantastic and they have made a significant contribution to a major trail building project that will be complete by the end of May meaning we will have brand new trails to replace those that will be closed in June. Just imagine what the trail map will look like in July once everything is open again! The new trails this summer will include two new blue trails, three new red trails and a black trail, also look out for a new trail style “BPW Blend”. We will be running a social media competition to name one of the trails during April and I’m sure you’ll have plenty of great ideas so send them our way, who knows you might end up riding a trail that you have named this summer.

photo

All of the above is just phase one of a major development project that will be taking place over the next three years, we won’t spoil the surprise by telling you everything right now but we will be sure to keep you informed as plans come to fruition. The BikePark Wales team would like to thank each and every one of you that has visited and supported us over the years, you guys make the park what it is today and our aim is to keep on pushing to make it better all the time.

Thanks and bring on the summer!

The BikePark Wales team

More toilets and changing areas would be nice ????

Yes, a decent rank of changing rooms / toilets which don't need to be access through the cafe would be very welcome when it gets wet up there

Was thinking the same when I read this. One throne is nowhere near enough!

Might be part of a later phase following the mains water hookup?

@ROOTminus1: You got it. We totally agree that the centre needs to have more toilets & showers and in the bigger picture we aim to resolve that. That said, the project to get mains water to the centre is substantial and will take considerable effort. Once we have that in place we can then get to work on building more toilets & showers.

Outstanding stuff from BPW. Massive respect for pumping the cashmonies back into the park, rather than lining pockets.

@BikeParkWales just a thought.. why not get some used army trucks adapt them with coach seats and adapt the trailers to take more bikes and bish bash bosh 30 riders each uplift run... plus in the rarity of hot sunny weather.. the canvas sides roll up nicely and lets nice fresh air in lol which a must! this set up works well and proven over at Bike park Ireland..

and when its shit you get rattled to bits for 20 mins while being battered by loose canvas sides.

Did you ever go to UKbikepark? now okeford, trust me a transit is the one!

@nwmlarge: some of each and a smoothish uplift road would work riders can choose what to go up in then also
  • 1 0
@Dave5555: It might be something you romanticise about but I dare say as a driver, a transit is the preference.

Think big a go for a gondola big initial investment but once up and running far better than vans rattling up the hill

Great news. I rode roots last week and was surprised how beat up it was already, the lower part could probably be graded black now. Good trail though. Camping would be a fantastic addition as would a drinking water station near the uplift pick up.

 @Holty73 +1 on the camping idea...@BikeParkWales Wink
  • 1 0
Great plan. I'd camp there too - especially if there was somewhere secure for the bikes overnight and maybe a bar.

 Camping + 1

I remember the afan days when the cafe after party on the balcony at glyncorreg was banging - nice on a summers eve when the midges are in full force!
  • 1 0
@jamesdippy: those were the days! The food used to be shit hot too!!! Miss that!

 @cunning-linguist: ahmen brother
  • 1 0
@jamesdippy: is it no longer a thing? I haven't been there for years.
  • 1 0
@ermoldaker: every time I have been there, caclosed by 5/6ish

Think it changed hands and the parties stopped
  • 1 0
@jamesdippy: not acceptable. We can't ever have nice things ????

Love the place but there are two things which prevent me visiting more often. Firstly only releasing dates to book 3 months in advance is frustrating. It means getting weekend dates is like trying to get a ticket for glastonbury. Why not 6 or 7 months in advance? Surely securing advance bookings is good business?
Secondly when the weather is bad, the cafe is nowhere near big enough for the number of riders. Maybe some awnings or a covered outside area might help?
  • 3 0
Says in the article that they're changing the way ticket bookings work
  • 3 1
Bloody love BPW. My only slight gripe on any visit is that I couldn’t do more runs before I have to go home. So news about the uplifts improvement is welcome. Keep up the good work everyone involved.

I went there on it's opening week, and have probably been 30 times since. All it's faults have already been addressed, hopefully it will now live up to it's potential. Cwncarn lacks the trails, but has a better uplift, and the food is way superior, don't forget this OG Trail centre.
  • 1 0
I like Cwmcarn but I have to disagree about the food. In my experience the food's better at BPW. They've changed it now but the Cwmcarn menu used to advertise an all day breakfast-served until 12pm.

@metaam: still neither are as good as @revolutionbikepark for food (or trails)
  • 1 0
 @ermoldaker: Revo rules supreme
  • 1 0
@metaam: went there in Feb. The burgers were flipping excellent. And a lot cheaper.
  • 1 0
 @pigman65: f*ck yeah. #revs4evs
  • 5 0
Could you do something about it getting dark so early in winter?
  • 3 1
@BikeParkWales out of interest have you ever priced up a chairlift? There's lots of tiny resorts in the Alps that have say 4-5 chairlifts, would you be able to make this work with the amount of custom you get?
  • 1 1
Chairlift / pull string / elevator thing
  • 2 1
I’m sure they posted something about this on Facebook over the last few years and it’s near a million pounds for one!
  • 3 2
Great news that improvements will be made. The negative thing for me when I visited was that the trails finish lower down the hill than where the uplift queue is. It was a real pain trying to ride uphill on a DH bike!!
  • 1 2
Totally agree. That last bit of trail is pointless too.
  • 1 0
The whole place is hard work on a dh, but I love how I can smash the rock gardens on my pulse
  • 2 0
Are you going to give up on Roots M?....it cannot cope with the weather as its currently designed.
  • 2 0
AFAIK the plan for Roots was to let it degrade naturally and get super gnarly, a bit of a change to usual dressed park trail surface. I havn't been in the last couple of months, so I don't know how much its bombed out after the crap weather, maybe they'll leave it be and up the grading
  • 1 0
@ROOTminus1: I'm all up for the natural stuff, but so much of it doesn't drain, or worse gets drained into, that its just shot to bits. It seemed in some parts that there was hardcore poking through where mud had been washed away.
Maybe they should close it to protect when there has been excessive periods of rain?
  • 3 0
It was my favourite trail when I went in mid December, but not sure how it's held up since.
  • 3 0
It's one of my favorite trails there and I love the fact it's just left to get gnarlier, maybe they should relist it as a black though so less experienced riders don't go down expecting something easier.
  • 2 0
Absolutely my favourite trail there. I went on a wet day and rode it three times. Great change from surfaced tril centre stuff. Please dont change it
  • 1 2
@lewispea: its nowhere near a black, its too flat and way too much sticky mud. Maybe they should point it down the hill more and then it would be gnarlier and hopefully drain better.
  • 2 0
@Travel66: Well compared to the other blacks there it's not far off, it's not quite 50 shades level but is very similar in difficulty to other black trials there like Coal not Dole and Dai hard. The amount of times I've been down there and got held up by a group of people struggling to get through the mud or trying to get over the roots shows that people are misjudging the trail.
  • 1 0
@lewispea: fair enough, i get what your saying. I can only speak for having ridden it recently when its thick mud that kills all speed and frankly fun (hence my comment about closing it when we've had ridiculous weeks of rain)...never got to try it when its dry sadly.

This is more great news from bpw, been going there pretty much since it opened, it was less busy then and far easier to get booked on!
  • 2 0
Over night parking, showers, and a Bar !!! LOL
  • 2 0
This. Being able to stay for the weekend in a camper would be cool. Limited spots would be needed I imagine.
  • 1 0
I'm coming over from Eastbourne this Friday and only wish I was closer because BPW is mint. Keep up the great work.
