Sick new paint job thanks @redbulluk ????

Without much pomp and ceremony, UCI World Junior DH Champion and upcoming rising star of the Women's Elite field, Tahnée Seagrave announced via her social media channels today that she's now on the Red Bull athlete roster. Many insiders were already aware of the impending move to the Red Bull athlete programme (it was even published in a local Morzine magazine last summer), and now it's official, it's come as welcomed news to many fans of downhill.

We managed to get hold of Tahnée and here's what she had to say about the news-

bigquotesI've been working with Red Bull ever since I was a Junior, but I never really felt like the helmet would be in reach considering Rachel [Atherton] is still on the top of her game, so I can't put in to words how humbled I am. It's so heart warming to know that Red Bull support and believe in me and want to put their brand to my name. I'm honoured to finally be a branded athlete, it's a childhood dream come true! - Tahnee Seagrave, Red Bull athlete

No one drinks that shit when they work out. But if drinking 30 of these a night in vegas is wrong, then oh well.

Tons of riders drink Red Bull and other energy drinks when they ride. I don't, but I see them buying them like crazy at the bike park. Hell, if they didn't, they might only be able to do a couple of laps!
  • 1 0
I remember one time riding winterberg. We had driven all the way from the uk the day before and had a few beers that night. Anyway a few runs in we weren't really feeling it and stopped and had a can of redbull and it was just the pickup we needed, riding improved and felt more focused. I can honestly say in over 20 years it's the only time a can of redbull has ever enhanced a ride. Normally it just leaves me feeling uncoordinated and twitchy if I'm riding

I love how everyone is suddenly all 'drink water' and 'boooo red bull sucks balls' just cos ratboy opened his mouth a bit.

You all know that without red bull there would be even less acknowledgement or acceptance of dh especially. The goal isn't to keep it a secret sport for a select few who have found out about it. Following that route means people make less money and makes it harder to get around the world to events, thinning competition out and becoming boring. But, I guess not having a big bad energy drink company around would be worth it though eh.

Drink water? Drink whatever the f*ck you want without the snobby attitude.
  • 29 1
Totally! I drink various swills willingly. It wakes my old ass up. I prefer the other companies 240mg Caffeine offerings. Tons of water, beer, but no regular soda. I'm not a pro athlete I'm a punter. Preachy mofos.

What did ratboy say about red bull? I must have missed that whole thing. I don't drink the stuff but I can't help but love the brand for how much sponsorship they give to extreme sports.
  • 6 5
@gtbiker87: Doesn't matter. Nobody can understand him.
  • 4 0
I think it's funny too because the rat specifically made a note to NOT be snobby about it in the interview. I think that energy drink companies have done a lot for action sports and for that I am grateful.
  • 9 0
@gtbiker87: josh intimated during his interview recently that he moved away from Monster owing to a change in his philosophy on what is healthy and what is not. He also alluded to the not so subtle changes to course design, exposure and the apparent taming of Warner's commentary that Redbull are allegedly responsible for.. the Drink Water brand approached him and he took it on and aligned it with the 50:01 thing and 'no f*cks given' ethos. Personally, I think he should be applauded for the moral stance on the branding but as @mgolder pointed out, it's pretty laughable too see the bandwagoning going on and the keyboard reaction to the sports drinks companies after Josh's comments. The sport wouldn't be where it was without them. Even on the same day, Tanhee Seagrave's Redbull athlete status was met with positive comments...
  • 6 0
I dont drink redbull just cos I dont like the taste. And I drink water cos im a cheap bastard. I DO like redbull for all the money they pour into MTB and other sweet sweet sports though.
  • 6 0
@Dodgysam: Redbull is pretty amazing, as an economic proposition. Yep, they produce a caffeinated beverage that I don't enjoy (and hence don't consume). Nope, I don't have a problem with anyone else consuming it. The thing that gets me, though, is that somehow they are apparently profitable enough to where it makes sense to spend insane amounts of money on advertising and marketing. They have a media arm with full time staff in Austria producing some of the most incredible action sports content anywhere - and most of it is available for free, just to create marketing exposure. They sponsor huge media events and contests (and a bunch of things where it's not quite clear as to whether they're contests or media events), and as a result, if I want to show a friend or someone in my family something amazing about some of the sports I love to do (windsurfing, mountain biking, skiing, sailing), chances are I can find a nicely produced Redbull media clip somewhere that gets the point across (and results in nicely blown minds along the way).

There are issues, of course - they have their own sports medicine facility in Austria for their athletes, which got some pretty bad press for employing at least one physician involved in East Germany's state-sponsored doping program (note that this is very different from there being any evidence to support allegations about that program actually doing anything illicit). They market a product with some questionable claims that it is an "energy drink" (to the point where at least in the US they got sanctioned by the authorities - but then again, Pom Wonderful and Nutella got stuck with the same sorts of sanctions, and it's not like reasonable consumption of Redbull has been shown to have harmful health impacts).

I'm glad they're out there, sponsoring sports I love. I'm glad they're providing sponsorship opportunities for athletes to push their sports. I'm glad they're providing opportunities for writers, photographers, and all sorts of creative types to produce amazing content (especially at a time when a there are fewer magazines and such shelling out for that sort of work).

Redbull is so awesome! I hope they start painting little kids helmets too. They do so much for sports that they deserve to advertise anywhere they want. I'm think I'm even going to get my little kid's forehead tattooed soon I love them so much. .....ah.... don't think so!
  • 44 1
No matter how people feel about the drink, Tahnee being sponsored by RB is a great thing for her and women's mtb as it furthers her ability to make a proper living out of racing bikes which is a massive positive, in much the same way many energy drinks sponsorship have done for other riders. Look beyond the advertising an look to the positives for the rider.
  • 45 2

  • 32 4
Awesome, but .. they don't actually force them to drink that stuff do they, I mean, do they have to drink it .. I remember seeing her always holding a can on podiums etc but did she drink the poison?? .. anyway, I am sure RedBull are very nice peeps
  • 18 2
I know that for Monster, it's just a big fake can full of water. PLG said it on tv. Don't know for redbull but i suppose it's the same thing.
  • 9 2
@Mathhhh: look at the bottom of the can...
If it has 'TW' on it, it's water
  • 6 1
@oldmanDan: it's also around the top of the can too, it's a pretty decent marketing move though.
  • 9 0
@Mathhhh: I'm sure its the same with Redbull. I knew a guy who worked for a Monster sponsored motorsports team and they used to get cases of the Monster cans of water. They called it "race water".
  • 7 0
I have a friend that used to race pro SX and MX and he knows some of the pro riders. I asked and he said all of them have water in whatever energy drink can they are holding.

flag cmcrawfo (Jan 6, 2017 at 8:43) (Below Threshold)
IMO. Atherton really opened herself up to comments like this when she made a big deal about a comment about riding with her brother....

and in fairness, it would not really be considered to be off side if you stated "HE has a GF now so maybe HE will calm down a bit"
  • 14 0
@Cefn: You mean the one who helped build the Hardline track? I don't see how that is going to calm her down. See, not all partners are like "You just got a new bike last year, why are you getting a new one already?".
  • 7 1
@cmcrawfo: Alot of the riders on the circuit have girlfriends and boyfriends. The point in that saying such a thing about either the men of the women is kind of silly. It doesn't make a difference. I saw Danny Hart mention his girlfriends alot in vids and interviews this past season. I have no idea if this is a new girlfriend or not but he certainly killed it this year did he not?

  • 1 0
@vinay: I think so, but you know how people change when they are in love. It makes you see the world differently. I hope she doesn't calm down tbh, I think she's sick. But she has already raised the bar and the expectations and pressure this season will be huge...

 Mmmm #drinkbeer..
  • 23 10
I don't understand the drink water circle jerk... Why do people have to have a pro rider tell them to drink water it's common sense. Congrats to Tahnee on an awesome sponsorship!
  • 11 10
Because drinking water actually means to *not* drink unhealthy stuff.
  • 16 13
@kerberos: No actually it is a brand/company that promotes drinking water in response to all the energy drink sponsorships but I'll bite.

Dont drink unhealthy stuff? OK, so don't ever drink a beer either then, hell don't even drink a chocolate milk.

To me that is dumb, just do things in moderation like a normal human, of course drink water and eat healthy it doesn't mean you cannot have a treat every now and then.
  • 10 6
Because Red Bull is so mainstream, Water is the new cool thing. I'm sure everyone here would turn down some sweet Red Bull $$ to stick it to the man.
  • 10 2
@Killrockstar: Thats exactly it. Is redbull good for you? No. But neither is beer, soda, or almost anything people buy from starbucks. Redbull is fine so long as you are not drinking one 4x a day. If you have one once in a while when you are tired, or on a long drive, or to get through a long day there is nothing wrong with it.
  • 31 0
@sino428: Whoa, don't bring beer into this.
  • 1 4
@Killrockstar: uhm... RedBull is most definitely not a treat. They promote it like it's medicine, support you drinking it regularly like taking your meds, and worst of all it tastes like medicine. You might as well finish your epic ride with a big gulp of mountain dew
  • 3 0
@plyawn: promote it likes its medicine? Lol wut? Maybe adverts are different in the UK.

And I enjoy a Mountain Dew every now and then nothing wrong with it.

DH would be a dying sport if not for Redbull. They bring live streaming to the masses, and money for the competitors. Drink it or not, your choice, but dont bitch about their involvement while calling yourself a fan of the sport.

I love how much mountain biking keeps the female athletes relevant. Cycling in general is far better about encouraging everyone to join up. Yeah it's not perfect, it never will be, but good job red bull, we appreciate it.
  • 1 0
I'd say mountain biking and weightlifting/ powerl ifting. There seems to be an immensly positive attitude towards women in these sports that I see lacking in others. Particularly team sports/ motorsports. Swimming and athletics are probably the closest I can think of to these two sports, but even then I don't seem to see the same level of interaction between male/ female athletes at the elite level.

Of course, I haven't been personally involved in those other sports, but this is just my observation.
  • 4 0
 Congrats on the new sponsorship.
Anyone who has ever raced any series as a privateer never mind a world series, knows the challenges and costs incurred to get to the races and maintain your equipment so that it is in race ready condition, it is not cheap, and factory support or aftermarket companies are very helpful in keeping your own costs down so that you can focus on your goals of winning races.

At least Redbull tastes better then Monster!!! But Redbull sponsorship looks its the best out there in the mtb world.
And @plyawn Mountain Dew is one of the worst for having a LOT of sugar and junk in it! Sugar water would be just as good!!!!
But whatever she does she's doing right! With most of the best mountain bike athletes sponsored by REDBULL!!

So the three fastest women are now RedBull athletes. With only Manon with Monster, think we'll see some RedBull on the podiums

I enjoy watching RB's coverage of gravity sports, extreme sports, motor racing etc. I eat chocolate and McDonalds, and potatoe chips yata yata yata. I think the beverage is horrible tasting but it sure does work for overnight drives and getting me clear of a migraine headache. Red Bull is a business and I understand how sponsorship works so if Tahnee has landed their support then that is an endorsement of her status as one of the best of the best. I say "Well done Tahnee! and I hope the support helps you take the challenge to Rachel to the next level. "
