At 190bpm you can barely talk so it`s mostly an issue with accuracy of the HR device. Saying this from a lotta personal experience with HR monitoring. Claudio`s heart rate looks like around ~160bpm.
It really depends on what your max HR is. My max is 205, and I've done hour efforts at 190, although I'll admit it is hard to talk much at 190. Max HR has nothing to do with fitness, or performance, just a number particular to each person. All that really matters is what % of max a person is currently doing.
@claudiocaluori: I believe it. My max at age 31 was 213 which was determined during a Max VO2 test at the Ontario Science Centre. Lots of times in races my pulse was way up including downhillls.
Cool story dude... @bcmrider: @claudiocaluori was also a pro athlete so I don't think you can compare your cardiovascular system to his. He trained to be able to do stuff normal people could never think of.
Whatever his heart rate was it's impressive that he can ride a World Cup course and talk at all. I attempted a Claudio impression with my helmet cam the other day and it was pathetic. Go Claudio!
So, probably asked and answered a thousand times but, the sound- it looks like Claudio has a mic clipped to his jersey by his neck with cables hanging down, but cannot see anything attached to his chest gopro. Is the mic going to a device in his pocket and then the video and sound synced after? Looks like a basic dirt cheap mic too, but no wind noise at all?
The image would be so much nicer without the helmet visor in it, you would get a better perspective, 'cause you could see the bars and front wheel almost the entire time I always lean forward hopping to see the wheel where its going )
As zixs said in another comment "At 190bpm you can barely talk so it`s mostly an issue with accuracy of the HR device. Saying this from a lotta personal experience with HR monitoring. Claudio`s heart rate looks like around ~160bpm."
For all the heart rate fanatics here....max hr is 220-age, mine is 176. I hit 180+ on trail rides. The max just means ‘be easy’ not a physical max. Can we really call what Claudio does talking? He’s more rapping his way down these mountains. There’s a tremendous difference between his voice stress on a decent and in the booth. If he’s wearing a chest strap it’s as accurate as an ekg.
Are u saying his HR is accurate in this video? Because claudios max HR would be somwehere close to 180 (220-40(claudios age?)=180) and then to stay consistent at heart rates over 100% is very unlikely to say the least....
For all the heart rate fanatics here....max hr is... highly individual. The 220 - age thing is a formula to approximate max HR for the average population (men/ women, old/ young) and is not so useful for extreme cases/ outliers, which includes athletes. Case in point; I'm closer to 40 than 20 in age, but my max HR is 208 and I've been known to sustain ~200 bpm for an hour. Resting HR is 50. "The max just means ‘be easy’ not a physical max." Nonsense, plain and simple. Stick to what you know in future and don't be spouting BS in place of science you don't understand.
What part of my statement did you not understand? As I read yours it seems we were saying the “max” hr isn’t a set in stone number. It’s a typical number as outlined by say the AMA (American medical association not American motocross association).......speaking of science.
Max HR is whatever it shows up as when you are _tested_. Mine is 205, I have friends the same age as me with 180. Yes, the average across the entire population is roughly 220-age, but it is meaningless for an individual since the standard deviation is a relatively large 12 bpm. BTW, I'm close to Claudio in age so his hr of 190 is believable to me since I'd be around the same on a DH run like that.
@OneEyedHito: I understood what you said- I understood it was nonsense. And rather than risk someone who can't see the fallacy of what you said being misguided by it, and possibly being injured as a result, I decided to call it out for what it is it.
@OneEyedHito: My first reaction to that was "Chris, he's just a child. Pull him away from the keyboard mom." But since it's summer and school is out you may as well learn something while you're here. Max HR as defined by the AMA is a formula to guide the general population about what is normal and what isn't. It is not 'set in stone' otherwise it would magically drop 1 beat per minute each year (on your birthday no less). Maximum heart rate (measured) is highly specific to the individual, and is not 'constant': it varies from day to day depending on factors such as quality of sleep, hydration and stress levels. Individuals can have maximum heart rates above or below their predicted values. Chris Froome (age 29) has a reported maximum heart rate of 174, almost 10% below what the formula says it should be. My problem with your 'serious but not so serious I backtracked like a baby back bitch' comment is that people who don't know any better might actually believe you and do genuine harm to themselves try to train/ perform using an arbitrary number that in no way applies to them. And don't say it doesn't happen, because you are a prime example of someone completely misunderstanding this very principle.
@Deuce-DeuceAndAHalf: Hey sweetie listen, you’re issue is understanding not lack of vocabulary. I was saying that in my original post and I used my experience as backing. I was saying his heart rate could very easily be 192 accurately and to state otherwise is a Lie. How’s that taste?
@cuban-b: I was saying I upvoted you....... I tried to put a laughing face from my phone and the site changed it to question marks, I was just trying (and failing) to explain......
On the topic of HR accuracy- Claudio`s HR Device is definitely NOT accurate ( chest straps are pretty much accurate).
As a swimmer, my maximum heart rate reached in the pool is 230bpm`s. Keep in mind that the heart rate bpm increases roughly with 10bpm as because of the decreased gravity required to pump the blood. -very nasty feeling. I could feel my heart beats hitting my neck.
As a runner i`ve reached maximum 210bpm`s on the stadium on interval training and sprints going. 220-Age is just a basic formula to get a general idea of your heart rate recommendations.
I was going to post above that my HR has hit 225, also in the pool, but I expected to be shot down because on PB if you say something that is true, you only need a few people not to believe it to be labelled as a liar.
And I believe you.
What a load of BS on the heart rate graphic - 190 and talking the entire way. Ya right.... They put that graphic in on all Course previews and it's all totally fakery. #SmokeandMirrors

The accurate as an ekg was a joke. Simmer down & enjoy the ride Popeye.

You’re lying. See what I did there? Don’t be a liar.
