Ghost Riot prototype

150mm Travel Ghost Prototype

German brand Ghost has a longer travel version of their Riot on display, although they were quick to point out that this early 150mm travel variant is more of a "functional model" that has allowed them to sort of the suspension kinematics than anything even close to being production. In fact, word is that this will be a 2016 model rather than anything we'll be able to see soon, and the front triangle is assembled with straight gauge aluminum tubing while the backend utilizes the chain and seat stays from the existing 130mm travel Riot model.

Ghost intends the yet to be named 650B wheeled bike to be fitted with a 170mm travel fork, making for the same 20mm front to back travel differential as with their new, 2015 Riot LT series, but with much slacker and lower geometry for more full-on terrain and enduro racing. This prototype has actually been welded in the Czech Republic at an engineering firm that Ghost uses for such things, which lets them be more hands on regarding changes that they want to see done quickly. And as you might expect, Ghost is looking to go straight to a full carbon fiber version come production time.

Ghost Riot prototype

The Riot-Link is tucked up inside of the frame, and it helps the suspension ramp up in the last 20% of its travel.

Riot-Link Suspension

Ghost's Riot-Link is all about ramping up the bottom-out resistance in the later stages of travel, with the rocker arm controlling the first 80% of the shock's stroke and the nearly hidden Riot-Link looking after the final 20%. The shock isn't mounted to the front triangle at all - it's bolted to the rocker at the top and the Riot-Link at the bottom - and Ghost says that the design gives them more freedom when it comes to tailoring how the suspension performs at different points in its travel.

Ladies and gentlemen, here for your reading pleasure, our in house pessimist, and world renouned suspension path expert, Protour to tell you how shit this bike is... Take it away Protour!
  • 13 5
Hopefully he'll use more movies made by 3rd graders to help illustrate his purely conjectural points
  • 5 2
A 3rd grader made that? I thought it was some sort of 2015 demo with invisible rider cheat for Bike Mayhem!
  • 15 3
Normally, people who spend too much time talking or trashing bikes, spend very little to no time riding... I learned that in order to talk about something, you must try it first, otherwise it's pure fallacy you're talking about.. Books are worthless if you don't practice what you preach...

 Who is Protour?
  • 27 4
 "Who is Protour?" Haahahaha!
  • 55 6
Thanks for the introduction, Tom. It's no DW link, but also not some Special Ed project gone awry. . Instead of ignoring basic suspension design principles and just putting the pivots in stupid locations, claiming the superior Ohlins shock will make up for any deficiencies, and completely focusing on the appearance of the bike, they actually engineered the suspension design to improve performance.
  • 11 1
Ah, Protour, the love of my life! Where have you been?
  • 58 2
I took an oath of internet silence to focus on my goal of becoming a pilot some day. Then I found out I was color blind and my dreams were ruined. I struggled to find a new purpose in life, especially once I realized all ecology here is doomed. So now I'm focusing my efforts on bringing light to the idea of axle path balance between and rear suspension.

Ah! So what do you think of this rising rate at the end? I don't know if its a good idea; bottom out should be controlled with damping. With the rising rate it means that not just the spring rate increases, but the damping as well. The rebound is slower at the bottom as well.

Could this be similar to treks full floater? If so,

Looks like a session.
  • 1 1
@EllioMoose Its really the opposite of the full floater.
  • 4 3
 Missed you Protour.
  • 5 3
@CaliCol welcome to pinkibke haha Protour is the most famous keyboard warrior on this site, sometimes with very unpopular opinions, but we all love him.
  • 1 0
Oh, okay. Figured I was out of the loop on something.
  • 1 0
seems like a trek full floater....but more complicated for some odd reason
  • 39 3
I love the built-in mud gatherer , looks like great fun.
  • 8 0
i bet if you don't wash your bike after a day trough muck and grime, you'll have a hardtail
  • 22 2
Looks like........ . i dont know
  • 32 0
 It definitely resembles a bicycle.
  • 8 0
Its black too! And has two wheels!
  • 7 1
I like the handlebars… gives you something to hold onto
  • 3 0
 looks like your next bike?
  • 1 1
Looks like a slack Specialized Pitch with a long fork... maybe?
  • 1 2
where'd they come up with that idea?

Sorry, but Giant uses a modified DW link, where this is a modified Horst link. The seatstays and chainstays are not connected. I really like floating shock designs, my Opus uses a DW link with a floating shock, and I love it!

Who needs (or wants) carbon?? I'd ride that right now. It looks like a BEAST!! tup
  • 7 1
My god pinkbike kids you've done it again.... barely read the article and just looked at the pics

This is a STRAIGHT TUBE proto for getting the suspension kinematics dialed... of course it looks like its 10 years old

this is the current 120mm model in all its carbon glory

 I dig the design
  • 5 0
I know it's the prototype and the production model will probably be offered in both hydro-formed swoopy aluminum and maximum swoop carbon.... But I think the straight tubes look clean and classic. Love it.
  • 1 0
 ditto!
  • 2 0
This looks awesome! I think the bike has a very balanced feel to it. The linkage seems complicated which is great unless it caked with mud!
  • 2 0
I really like the simple straight tubes. But since this is a prototype I'm sure it will end up looking like every other hydroformed mtb in the production run.
  • 3 0
Is it just me, or does this look better as a proto than the final carbon thing!? Think I'm over carbon.
  • 3 0
So when was the last time someone saw a new bike with a single crown up front and a coil out back?
  • 1 0
 Not enough of these^
  • 1 0
I know it won't look like that when it comes to production, but I really like that, reminds me of an old iron horse 5 point or something, but with good geometry. (Yes, I know the linkage isn't the same)
  • 4 2
Ooooh, never mind prototyping n marketing! Just send me this one! Looks like a fuuuunn lil bike! Smile
  • 3 0
Meh, hard to judge until the real deal comes out. Cool though.
  • 1 0
If Trek, Specialized, and Canfield had a menage-a-trois baby... (Kids, don't Google that if you don't know what it means....)
  • 2 0
 rear triangle looks so clean
  • 2 0
 I hope they've shit-proofed those linkage bearings ....
  • 1 1
Yeah Procor. Give em hell boi! As for zee germans its either cutting edge or more refined 2005 tank designs! Leopard mk4 anyone!
  • 1 0
looks like a 'Max Bikes 1' with a better link haha

  • 3 2
looks like an old iron horse mk
  • 1 0
I thought that, I really like it
  • 3 2
For the sake of "it looks like.."..Looks like an iron horse sunday.
  • 2 2
I'd take a cross-breed between the two. Add the small linkage from DWlink to the bottom to create a VPP along with the Riot Link. I'd call it the Sun-Day of the Dead. ...I'm ashamed of myself.
  • 3 0
 You should be.
  • 2 0
 Balfa 2step anyone?
  • 2 1
looks like a 10 year old design
  • 1 0
Dam must be getting assimlated just looked at pictures haha...
  • 2 1
 Welding is absolute shocking
  • 1 0
Does anyone know which company in Czech republic they used?
  • 2 1
 want one
  • 4 4
It looks like its super stiff and thats good..
  • 10 1
Sure, as if you can tell from a photo.
  • 2 2
that riot linkage will be fun when it gets clogged with mud.
  • 2 3
There bikes look like there 5 years behind the rest. Not saying it's bad, but this bike would look at home 5 years ago
  • 5 0
I think its a good thing because there were many bikes I wanted 5 years ago! Now Im all confused on what is a mountain bike these days! hahhaha Its looks very solid and a solid bike will last you 3-5 seasons! RideOn!
  • 1 2
Good point. It just kinda erks me to see the same things from years ago branded as new and advanced.
  • 1 2
just like that morpheus loki bike pinkbike reviewed a few months ago. with out the riot link it looks alot like those fake kona four bar frames that are selling like hotcakes here in the Philippines.
  • 3 0
other then its a horst link proto mule? so it won't look like this in the end.

here is its production 120mm cousin....

ep1.pinkbike.org/p4pb9930899/p4pb9930899.jpg
  • 1 0
read the article, it says this bike is just a platform to test the new linkage out, I doubt the production bike will look anything like this.
  • 1 1
 Dear lord Big Grin
  • 2 5
 Dont want one
