Diablo Freeride Park to close

by Ian Hylands
January 19, 2012 - I finished shooting with the Atherton's today and sat down to my computer to find some unfortunate news on facebook, Diablo Freeride Park will be closing. This didn't come as a complete surprise, we've heard a few rumors lately about the future of the park and we're currently trying to find out more about what will be happening. Fairly reliable sources have given us a few details of the new bike park at Mountain Creek, and it looks very promising. As soon as we know more we'll let you know.

Update 1/20/12 - You can read our post about the new Mountain Creek Bike Park here.

Here is the note that was posted on the Diablo facebook page today, you can find the original here

Greetings Diablo Fans!

On this day we have some unfortunate news to share with you. As most of you know, Mountain Creek Resort was recently purchased by a local golf course developer and during this ownership change the bike park has gone through a tough transition suffering from executive pitfalls. Recently, the new owners of the resort offered Diablo Freeride Park a 5-year lease extension and unfortunately the terms of this agreement are not favorable for the future growth of the park and are clearly not representative of a resort that has a genuine interest in the sport of mountain biking.

As a result, we have declined to accept this offer to extend our existing agreement and Diablo Freeride Park is now officially closed for business. During the past 12 months, the resort has repeatedly and negligently breached existing agreements, caused unnecessary damage to the bike park and has adversely influenced the ability of the park to progress, expand or simply operate and provide a high level of service that you have come to expect. As a result, we can no longer invest time, passion and valuable resources at a resort that does not share our passion for the sport or respect for the community of riders that have called Diablo 'home' the past nine years.

The backstory...

While the owners of the resort were aggressive and motivated to sign an agreement that would continue the current Diablo / resort relationship, this arrangement would greatly inhibit our ability to offer our guests the high standard of quality you have come to expect over the past nine years. We devised an extensive, 5-year plan and investment commitment that would bring a plethora of new improvements to the park including several new downhill trails, tons of new terrain features and an all-new, innovative 20mile XC/FR trail network/center on the mountain top. We were motivated and committed to these projects, however, the risk of investing these significant resources without a proper & fair agreement is simply not a wise venture. Once bitten, twice shy.

Broken Promises...

In addition to various other operational issues caused by the new resort management, the 2011 season saw an immense amount of unnessecary park closures, trail damage, operating shedule 'broken promises' and various trail interuptions. This past September & October the bike park was completely closed for six weeks as a result of the resorts inability to properly maintain their ski trails and control erosion. After repeated requests, the resort refused to dedicate the proper resources to get the premise repaired and the park back open for business. Instead of honoring a contractual agreement to make speedy repairs, the resort focused on completing less important projects while mountain bikers were left stranded, frustrated and unable to ride their favorite park. This was simply unnacceptable. As a customer, you deserved better.

Furthermore, this past fall the resort management forged ahead and caused the demise and destruction of nearly $100,000 of developed mountain bike trails. Offering no advanced warning, explanation or plan to remediate or reimburse for the loss of these popular bike trails, the end result is an extensive amount of terrain and features that are damaged, destroyed and / or needing significant repair. These actions are not only in breach of contract, they are also not representative of a resort that has ambitions of growing the sport or a management team demonstrating respect for the mountain biking customer.

In closing, we made every effort to reach a mutually benefitting agreement with the current resort ownership, however negotiations have ceased and we have rejected their proposed 5-year lease extension.

***Perhaps as a final measure to save face for a season filled with tons of downtime and broken promises, Mountain Creek resort has at least agreed to honor all 2012 season passes that have been purchased to date.

With regards to the U.S. Open of Mountain Biking, negotiations are currently underway bringing the event to the Lake Tahoe region. More info soon!

A huge thanks goes out to all of our friends and loyal fans throughout the years! Hosting tens of thousands of riders from points across the globe, it has been a great adventure filled with many accolades and good times.

We appreciate your support.

As mentioned in the update at the beginning we have since heard from Mountain Creek and they will be running the bike park now with freshly updated and maintained trails, you can find the post about it here.

A sick bike park being bought by a golf course developer...... how can that go wrong? Well all we can hope is somebody steps up for the biking community and brings more riding outlets to the table.

IT WILL BE OPEN NEXT YEAR UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT THAT CARES ABOUT THE TRAILS AND WILL DO SOME TRAIL MAINTENENCE, SHAWNS FACEBOOK LETTER IS JUST HIS LITTLE TEMPER TANTRUM AFTER HE GOT EVICTED, EXPECT THE BEST SEASON TO DATE UNDER A NEW TRAIL CREW, WITH WAY MORE RESOURCES AND ASPIRATIONS. ITS NOW RAN BY RIDERS, FOR RIERS

^ Great news! And maybe for this next season, we can just have Highland pick up the US Open Wink
  • 3 0
That wont happen, the original owner owns the us open title, so it will go wherever he feels, right now, he is in tahoe promoting a crappy snowboard company called status. I dont think there will be a us open caliber race this year, but i would be surprised if they didnt bring it back as soon as they get it running

Racer 303 - where did you get your info? This PB is listing is from the Diablo website itself - yes Shawn. Hope you're right. Seems he wants to take the Open to Tahoe.

It's all good news. The previous owner Shawn was a douche to people and failed to mention the broken promises were his fault and he never invested time and money into Maintence. Shawn let the park go to hell. Serves him right. There will be DH at the same location this year with new owner" douche to say the least Wink

Racer303, QQdownhiller, myself and many others are all locals to the mountain, and spend more days than you can count on your body parts there, were all in touch with what is going on and excited to see what is to come for 2012. This article is not completely correct by saying goodbye to the mountain. A new beginning is planned for 2012, see you out there

f*ck golf, how are they going to build a golf course on a mountain side anyway?

Any header of "broken promises" usually means you've been screwed over...

Hopefully this just leads to the building of a another bikepark for "popular bike trails"!

they should bring the US Open to northstar, maybe it would motivate the trail crew to do more then make rock sculptures and smoke weed

Shawn Orecchio, the founder and killer of Diablo. Good job, buddy. Only a doosh would blame a natural disaster on the land owners.
  • 4 0
Golf?! I've always said that golf courses are a waste of land and whatever may have been there prior. This just furthers my thought process. Sure I have resentment toward Diablo and what that mountain did to my left crankarm and pedal just 1 hour before my US Open run, but I vowed to get back there and prove it wrong, not no mo! Frown *end rant*
  • 4 0
they should slap the golf set up with a huge law suit for breach of contract take the money and build somwhere else, seems like such a shame to loose a great lookin bike park :-(

I got to go to the US Open in 2010 and it was a great experience and very rider friendly by the resort and Diablo. I then went to the 2011 US Open and it was a different story, twice the hotel cost, the racer prizes were less expensive and everything seemed totally different and not for the better. I don't blame the company Diablo but i do blame the owners who sound like they just want more money in the end. RIP Diablo, you will be missed
  • 1 0
You hit the nail on the head. Something definitely changed between 2010 and 2011.

I've been a Diablo regular for a few years and after the U.S Open this year, gave up on Diablo and started heading to other parks in the northeast. From what I hear, the little narrative above is a bit of propaganda. I don't think the new owner is completely to blame and the current (now former) management of Diablo had more do with the demise of the place than is described above. I know for a fact there were a lot of regulars who were really pissed at the management this year. They screwed a bunch of people out of prizes won and money.

I don't if it was the management or what, but I do know Diablo was a disaster this year. If they don't refund all the season passes they've sold for 2012, and were still selling up until a couple weeks ago, I do know there are going be a lot of angry people.

Please people stop and read before posting! So many usless posts to go through to try and get to the ones with info. It is not going to be a golf course! Use your head and read the entire article before posting about how yer friends are gunna pwn the gulf guys while you make dh trains on the fairway. Pinkbike tries to get us news as it happens so it should not be an issue that all details are not yet clear. I am sure they will continue to cover the story and add details as they unfold. The source of their info is clearly stated and I think if the article, if read entirely is all pretty clear. Just remember two sides to every story kids.

 US Open to Whiteface!
  • 1 0
 that would be nice
  • 2 0
No! this is terrible news. Diablo was a world class riding location and us eastern riders are loosing a gem. The same thing happened a few years ago in Ontario when Calabogie Peaks got new golf oriented management and dumped the best DH riding in Ontario.
  • 2 0
I know a couple people have posted this already, but many people don't seem to have noticed. The bike park does not appear to be closing. They are not making it into a golf course. That would be ridiculous. It did get bought by the guy who owns the local golf resort, but the place is a very very popular ski resort and the new owners just dumped millions into building a new base lodge and massive snow tubing park. Besides that, how the hell could they build a golf course on the side of a mountain anyway.

"Diablo" in name is shutting down, meaning the current owners who lease the land from the resort and run the place are under the name 'Diablo Freeride Park' are no longer there. But according to Mountain Creeks facebook page, the bike park will still be open for business just under new management. And according to comments by some of the locals who were and will still be involved with the park, the change could be a good thing. Of course we'll have to wait until may to see what all this means, but its not the terrible news it woud seem to be.
  • 2 0
good riddance. the old owner was a total douche and could care less about riders. the US Open will be following him since he owns the name. plus that event has been a joke for a while now. stupid kids waiting in the middle of the trail and not moving, ridiculous entry fees, poorly run but yet they get "record" numbers every year. riiiight

Does anbody here realize that Mountain Creek is a Ski Resort that happens to also have a golf course on it's property which is about a mile down the road. I might also ad that about 2/3 of the decent Ski Resorts here in New England do as well including Snow, Stowe, Sugarbush,Sunday River, etc.. I know it feels good to misguide your frustration towards a sport that happens to reside way on the other side of the activity spectrum, but, let's be real. This decision really has nothing to do with the Golf side of the investment. It's about improving the SKIING!!! I have lost riding spots to Golf resort development and they don't just remove a few see-saws or bridges, bros. Developers clear out about 4 square miles of land.....FLAT LAND!! . I've never seen a golf resort that needed a Gondola to get you to a fairway. just sayin

Management, Management. Management The balance must be kept even. I love how mountain bikers stick together even in the face of financial loss. A group of people believing in something they love to do in the face of ghosts that wont stand for anything, and fall for everything. The world is what it is. Mountain bikers are of a higher nature. The mountain biker is of flow. A spirit that at times finds himself touching down on earth, not to often.

Diablo Freeride Park Bumper sticker = $5.00, Highland Bike Park Sticker = Free, Seven Springs sticker = Free, Launch Bike Park Stick = Free, Blue Mountain Sticker = Free (when they were open Frown Plattekill sticker = Free......I am missing one from my car, guess which one? I think someone forgot the customer was the main priority................and it wasn't Mt.Creek........On another note, Platty stayed open into December, and Shaun sold me a seasons pass on the fact that I would ride October and November at the park, instead he closed......

I live in colorado 2000 miles from diablo but I have spent alot of time riding diablos trails. Man I am sickened by this! This year was hard with the weather and construction. I have Really been looking forward to spring and heading back east. Dam
  • 2 0
If you wanna come east to ride, then head a bit more North to Sunday River Maine. A Resort with 3x the vertical height and a great combo of new and old school DH riding. There is a ton of great biking here in New England , Highland included. I did go to the 2010 and 2011's US Open along with freeriding 2 seperate weekends in 2011 thought along with my buddies, "This place has seen it's better days." The trails were a mess all summer. Trails that weren't anywhere near the new project construction, were still devastated by erosion. There were plenty of riders on the mountain so it didnt appear to be from lack of business. MAYBE after all the construction concludes and the resort is back on track to turning a profit they will be motivated to adequately adress the trail conditions with a new Diablo manager. Until then , head north to NH, VT, or ME.
  • 1 0
Hell yeah Sunday River! We used to ride there wayyy back in the 90's and it was awesome then, if a bit rustic. What's it like now?
  • 1 0
Being from northern new england I can say i have been to Sunday River and was very disappointed with their trail maintenance or lack there of. If you are looking for jump trails and more of the "park" riding Highland or Burke Bike park at Kingdom Trails is where you want to go!
  • 1 0
Sunday River has 2 jump trails and about 10-15 more natural intense insane terrain trails. With a nice section of smooth slick ledge rock to bomb down. It IS not your trendy perfectly groomed close your eyes and stick the landing /engineered mountain. Highland is defintely that only about 1/4th the vertical height of SR. SR average runs takes 15-20mins where as Highland takes 4-6 mins. The money you spend in gas to get to SR you make up for in riding value. The natural trails are not groomed at all but are steep , filled w/ rock gardens but still fun and challenging . A new trail crew started building two seasons ago and adding the more groomed flowy runs as well. It's coming back slowly but surely....w/ NO LIFT LINES and half the price!!!! I am dying to get to Kingdom trails though this year. My bro lives in Mt Pelier and hear it is a blast.
  • 1 0
That sounds kind of like how I remember it only in 96 there was nothing built or groomed at all. We used to pedal our XC bikes up from the parking lot until we hit snow, then bomb down this old skidoo trail for about twenty minutes at about ten thousand miles an hour. Then you'd come back on this trail that went back and forth across the river and up to this awesome brew pub for lunch. It was really really wild and beautiful.
  • 1 0
I would say that there is significantly more steep, gnarly , challengindg DH single track added since 96.
  • 1 0
I would say that the summit trails at burke are just as long if not longer then the trails at sunday river and the freeride trail is the most bad ass trail i have ever ridden steep rocky rooty drops and gaps galore.
  • 1 0
I HAVE to make a ride to VT this summer and try both those places. Especially since Ive been doing less Dh riding and more AM riding , Ive heard the Kingdom trails are a blast for AM and Vermont is arguably the most scenic state on the East Coast!!
  • 4 0
If a golf cousre does get built on that land it will be ashame as it's such a terrible and pointless game

Would love to find out the whole story on this and how it unfolded. This a huge opportunity to learn about how bike parks operate and what is required to run them, everyone loves reviews and pictures but have to be honest that I would find this far more interesting as a story.
  • 2 0
Loss of Focus: Diablo management invested into the "snowboarding business" via money made on DiabloFreeride....fine, business move, ok w/ that.....however, the past couple of years, mngmt have shown little interest in maintaining the trails/ doing more for customer service.....it was cash out on the open and let theriders deal with the rest of the season..very little maintenance, although it was always stated "huge improvements" (Diablo tended to lie a bit to much for the honest folk)..The damage that is mentioned for October/Novemebr were back to back to back major rain storms....trails fell apart due to "lack of drainage" on part of the trail crew, and a giant colvert exlploded at the bottom of the hill under the chairlift (it was a canyon. Mother Nature can be nasty!!! 2nd the ski resort is trying to put in a "mountain coaster", this destroyed the lower Alpine trail where the table tops were (yes the table tops that sent everyone over the front end into the right turn berm) and the "sram" berm are gone.....how those jumps cost $100,000 is a mystery to this guy.......100k for something not even built correctly or ever adjusted due to rider injuries......."lack of concern for the riders", cash out was the goal towards the end.........new management will be much better, fresh energy...i do believe the mountain will continue DH because the chairlift will run for sightseeing, so why not make money off the DH riders as well........no brainer on that one......if not:plattekill, highland, burke VT, whiteface, snowshoe and seven springs are the options.....
  • 1 0
Sunday River, Maine also.........Bromont north of the border.....
  • 1 0
There seems to be some confusion I thought I'd try and clear up. The mountain was bought by a 'golf course developer' but the mountain isnt being turned into a golf course. In fact, the current winter ski operations are getting better. There are improvements being made, but it seems that the new owner did not agree with Diablo management. It truly is a shame that there was so much damage and butting of heads, but at least its not all negative. The fact that they are going to honor 2012 passes seems to imply that they will open in 2012 regardless, perhaps with improvements like they're making to winter operations.
  • 1 0
 well put.
  • 1 0
This is bs. One of the greatest freeride parks within a reasonable distance of me and all my riding buddies and its getting closed because of golf? Who the hell golfs on the side of a mountain? fack um, lets just make a downhil course through the fairway, gap the sand traps and come to a skidding stop on the greens.
  • 1 0
Noooooooooooooooo!!! I can't believe this SAD news.
I'm now back in Japan but used to enjoy nice trails on 2008-2010 when I was living in Long Island NY.
It was so fun to try myself on new stunts, and I was hoping to visit there some day... and now I know there is no chance any more.
(I can't understand why resort management don't understand the value of Diablo.)

Guys, please post as much Diablo videos as possible so that we can show our love and remember this place!!!
  • 1 0
Well, I'm gonna let the guys in the big boy pants sort this one on their own. In the meantime, I'm going to continue to ride my bike... while the rest of you argue over something that you probably didn't even read through all the way. Happy trails
  • 2 1
if you ever stayed at mtn creek lodge during one of the open's you woul have been thinking Broken Promises aswell.great riding, nice area..horribal management i was racing in the open last year andwhile staying at mtn creek i called down to the lobby to see if i could get a burger sent up to the room and they told me they had a vending mechine what kind of self respecting mtn doesnt even have a place to grab a bite to eat. within 5 miles.....bummer i was looking forward to the 2012 us open being on that mtn but you cant always get what you want RIP DIABLO props to all the people who tryed to hold that mtn togeather its seems like it was a bit of of tug of war between mtn creek and diablo.
  • 1 0
I went to Diablo for the first time last year - I was hoping to go again. Golf courses suck. Like we don't have enough of them for a bunch of congestive heart failure fatties driving around in their little putt putt cars smacking a stupid little ball - yeah that'll get you in shape!
  • 1 0
They didn't shut it down for a golf course. The previous owner of Diablo was crap. He burned way too many bridges and broke promises. Did you see many sponsors at Diablo, no, he couldnt keep them. Expect the park to reopen under a new name and managed by new people. It now has potential to be better like it was 4+ years ago.

Brett
  • 1 0
Oh, and dont pay attention to their FB page either, he runs it...
  • 1 0
Ya this some serious bullshit. They wonder why everyone misserable fucks out here. People constantly hating on mtb and bmx and shutting us down every chance they get. I already have my car pointed towards plattekill but we might stop at creek to bushwack the old trails. If some golfers want to try stop us we feeding them to the bears.
  • 2 1
just and an FYI. I went to Plattekill during the World Cup weekend last summer. I couldnt believe how bad that place has gotten. The grass hadnt been cut it seemed all year. The trails have stacks and stacks of shale, way more than I remebered in 2003. You might wanna try Sunday River. That Mtn is amazing.
  • 1 0
Ya sunday a cool mt but for that amount of travel from nyc i just go to whistler. Platty rules the east with iron fist. If you dont know the trails it easy to get caught up and lost. Specially when grass is high. There are sooooo many trails it impossible to maintain that network. If you into rugged dh platt the best spot around.
  • 1 0
Definitely a big hit for the progression of East Coast biking, being that Diablo had great proximity to thousands upon thousands of potential riders and lots of fun beginner terrain. I'll be kicking myself for not making it to the Open but hopefully it will come back to the East Coast in one capacity or another (a rotating venue would be cool?) Still have the World Cup though and still have PLATTEKILL!!!!
  • 3 2
Shame on you Pink Bike for running this as a story without doing your do dilligence about what this means for the park, the park is very much open, just under new management with a new name, it is not closed! And this has nothing to do with golf!! If your going to run a story, I suggest you gather more information before leading the world to believe that Vernon NJ no longer has a bike park! Mountain creeks bike park will be operating this season, so come ride and enjoy, plans are under way to make it better then ever, just no more Diablo name or Shawn Orecchio.
  • 2 0
I would barely say this is a 'story', it's more a news article on Diablo closing. That seems to be a pretty solid fact. If another bike parks opens in it's place that's another story at the moment, and one we've been trying to gather information on with little luck.
  • 1 0
although it is somewhat widely known Mt Creek will have a bike park there, there hasnt been a announcement, so this "story" is still valid.
  • 1 0
Old management Sean terrilogic always had problems since day 1 with the races and trail maintanence. Last year was a joke with half the trails closed all season. Then they blame creek for that hurricane that came at end of season and did alot of damage on top of damaged trails. Basically getting sean out of there will be best move to happen at creek in many years. I was riding creek before it was diablo. My crew built bmw and we not going to stop riding there. I was falling asleep riding diablo last couple years, hopefully this change will live the trails up again.
  • 2 1
So do you all see now? What else will it take to make people see that $ is evil. GOLF! A sport of what? Repetition, like bowling another non-sport. The golf industry has closets of old $ and has once again seduced the greedy and taken away flow, balance and life from those that celebrate it most.

May your hands never pick up a club unless it is to hurl it into a bottomless black hole called greed.

Thank you to the crew at Diablo for giving me some of the best years in my life. Best of luck.
  • 2 0
Well... I'm not a golfer nor have I ever been, but the ONLY thing this story has to do with golf is the investor seems to think skiing and golfing is a better investment than DHing, at least in the short term. The SKI mountain is being overhauled to better serve it's winter sports patrons. I dont think they are relocating any of it's holes on the mountain side. The removal or destruction bike bridges/jumps/trails etc are obviously ski/boarding related. What's at topic is the mismanagement of the bike park not a referendum on wether golf and mtn biking can co-exist. If you've seen the construction of their new Lodge addition and widening of their Main Ski trails, it's clear it's about SKIING/SNOWBOARDING upgrades. Just trying to keep things in perspectve.
  • 1 0
Four... Hey nice shot Skippy is that a new driver....grrrrrr ooooooo shiiii ooooooeewwwow!! Another golfer eaten by bears at creek today. Mark and George know those trails better than anyone and should be the new trail managers. As far as the us open it should move to windham mt. because that track badass and better than lake tahoes.
  • 1 0
Well if half you guys would read the comments you would realize that it sounds like it will actually be a good thing, old crappy owner wrote the above, he is salty, pissy, so yea "Diablo" the name is gone, but the biking is not, hopefully...Ha the new name should be "el Diablo"....suck on that Shawn.
  • 1 0
This seems to be the trend as DickGol...Disc Golfers are taking over the local area here as well. 'Beacon Hill to be exact.' which is way worse as dick golfers destroy everything and have no respect for nature.

Golf... a gentleman's sport. Pht. *angry*
  • 1 0
Actually read the reply from Mountain Creek, linked at the top and the bottom of the page. Seems like Diablo's comment about golf was pretty far from reality. There will be a fresh and well maintained park running next season according to the mountain.
  • 1 0
Hi Ian, I totally understand and I understand how groups and management can work and how taking over with new management can/does fix or cause other problems. However, hearing that it was a golf developer hit a sore spot in me personally and hits a lot of people local to me as well; as we are trying to retain out rights/privileges to our own land use while these people, these meaning the dickgolfers, are intruding without so much of an approval from the city with paper work. Especially when we have had to go through all the risk management, inspections, funds, sponsorships, approvals to afford what we have with the city and private land of which we operate on.
The dickgolfers here are have also trashed their own courses here by leaving trash everywhere, trampling undergrowth, clear cutting, illegal burning and dumping vandalism of their own areas etc. Basically ruining local ecological systems thusly promoting erosion/hightend ground temps etc which make it hard for vegetation to grow back let alone the dangerous use of needles which are left around thier current trampling grounds. As such the dickgolfers are starting/trying to do it to our most popular local riding spot which just got a huge grant from Specialized/IMBA to build new Whistler style trails 'which everyone is super stoaked on and are turning out awesome!', and I hate hearing how 'lower risk' sports seem to be taking the time/work/dedication away from our sport without so much of a consideration for the work and love people have put into the places that they congregate.

pinkbike WTF !! Why didnt you issue a statement saying that Mountain Creek Bike Park will be open!!? leading everyone to think the place shut down is irresponsible.
  • 1 0
Actually from the beginning we said we were waiting to hear from Mountain Creek about the future of the park, and we updated this post, and then added the press release from them as soon as we got it. The Diablo guys were the only ones that said the park was closing...
