The Blue Ridge Region of the Great Smokey Mountains is home to several of the highest peaks on the east coast. Western North Carolina provides mountain bikers with substantial mountains, the ability to ride trail year around, as well as an overwhelming amount of supreme singletrack. These trails are considered to be some of the greatest and most renowned in the country, but still have the feel of a local riding spot. I was drawn to the area and all it had to offer with the hope of sharpening my skills as a downhill racer.

In addition to the volume of trails in the area, the terrain offers even the most advanced riders plenty of challenges. The tracks in Western North Carolina range from technical and rocky to groomed flow trails. The ability to ride year around is an appealing and convenient quality, especially for riders who would normally have to travel for offseason training. Unlike other year around riding destinations, this region offers almost every weather condition.

During the year, the trails can range from muddy and slick to dry and dusty. With such a variety of terrain and conditions, riders are able to prepare for anything the race season can throw at them. This aspect is certainly ideal, with a majority of my races based in Europe, where the conditions and terrain are constantly changing.

While the prime riding terrain makes this region extremely attractive, the strong cycling community and talented group riders is a valuable component. One of my best friends and fellow World Cup rider, Luca Shaw, lives nearby and we get out riding together on a daily basis. Having my brother and mechanic living here with me is also a huge bonus. This year Mick Hannah and Isak Leivsson based themselves here for the offseason as well, making the crew even stronger. It proves to be motivating and immensely beneficial to be training with some of the world’s top riders. In addition, there are several locally based cycling companies in the region, including Industry Nine, Cane Creek, and one of my main sponsors, Oscar Blues Brewery. It’s exciting to live in a place where mountain biking is so prominent.

For this edit, we really wanted to film trails that I thought would best represent the variety and quality of terrain that the area has to offer. Let’s start with DuPont State Forest - a 10,000-acre park with over 86-miles of unique terrain. The trail network in DuPont features lots of exposed rock, which is quite unique on the east coast. Due to the nature of the sand based soil and rock, it dries out quicker and makes it more accessible to ride in the wet, winter months. The easy access and beautiful views make it a popular destination for tourists.

DuPont is a refreshing contrast to the technical terrain of Pisgah National Forest. Although only ten miles apart, Pisgah’s terrain provides raw, rough trails littered with rock gardens and tons of exposed roots. Pisgah is considered a must-ride, mountain bike destination and pulls in thousands of visitors each year. This is where I do the majority of my riding so it made sense that this is where we focused our filming. We started on Farlow Gap, which is known to be one of the longest descents in the forest. I consider it a real adventure trail because it’s so remote and deep in the wilderness. The trail later runs into Daniel Ridge, a technical descent parallel to a mountain river. The waterfalls are what make this part of the forest really special. The last trail we filmed was Pilot Rock, which starts near the Blue Ridge Parkway and descends into the heart of the forest. It features many rock gardens worthy of a downhill bike and some spectacular views.

One of the coolest and humble guys you can meet. I met him at bailey bike park when my shock blew out at the beginning of a trip. He went out of his way and gave me a his personal pushed fox shock to use for the remainder of the trip and mail it back to him. I now rock a mullet for Neko!!

I was preparing a sweet "why does his bike have a chain" joke but then I saw that mullet and figured there was enough comedy on this page already. I really dig his controlled drifty style though!

They called him Mullet Mulally Smile

I noticed that his non-metric suspension still enabled him to have a bunch of fun. ifitaintbrokedontfixit

While on a road trip from Texas to North Carolina with a few friends we stopped by Bailey bike park. On one of the runs my buddys @FindDigRideRepeat, hit the big step down and blew out his shock. After asking around at the base of the mtn as to where a good shop could do a quick turn around on a rebuild, Neko happens to be there. He does suggest a great option, but they can't service the shock for w/e reason. Neko being the amazing guy that he is, starts pulling different shocks out of his van to try and match up eye to eye with by buddies rig. He ends up pulling off a shock from one of his team bikes and letting us borrow the shock for the remaining week of our trip and ship it back to him!! This is the type of athlete who obviously cares about others! I can't be thankful enough for how outstanding the experience was. He saved our trip and could easily passed us off and kept on about his day. Thanks @nekomulally you sir are a badass and an amazing person!!

I consider myself extremely fortunate to live in NC and be able to ride these trails every month or so. Too bad my riding is so far from Neko's that we may as well be doing different sports!
  • 6 0
Loose but precise - great riding!

Honestly, I don't understand this.... "The trail network in DuPont features lots of exposed rock, which is quite unique on the east coast".

Rocky and rooty in a lot of places seems par for the course with systems up and down the eastern side of the country. That's from Georgia and well into the north east.
  • 6 0
They are talking about the exposed granite, not the chundery rocks and roots.
  • 1 0
 @ErikRC10: Ahh..... Thanx
  • 1 0
Yeah they're talking about big rideable slabs. There's a bunch of that at DuPont.
  • 2 0
@bkm303: Yeah.... If they had said "big rideable slabs" I would've understood.

Oh well. :-)

 Takeaways from this video:

Trail bike riding should be done sans gloves, glasses and water bottle- providing there's a picturesque swimming hole along the trail. Ugly shoes are just a bonus.

All in the name of downhill training?

Ran into Neko at Beech Mtn on Sunday. Shame to see his arm surgically repaired from a crash at Mountain Creek. Being the class guy he is though, he was nice enough to stop what he was doing and talk to me and my buddy while having some down time on the mtn. Get well soon man!

 Love me some Farlow Gap.
  • 2 0
Just rode out there with some buds recently and those pics and vids of Farlow do not do it justice. That stuff is crazy steep. The boy is making it look easy! Nice job, Neko.
  • 2 0
Serious climbing in Pisgah to have on a full face helment. It's a rarity to see anybody with one on. I've never considered it.
  • 1 0
Nice to see some east coast rock and root gardens gettin some lovin! DuPont and Pisgha are definitely some gems to not be overlooked.
  • 6 3
Nah mate, ain't any rocks on those trails.
  • 8 0
He rides them pebbles like pavement.
  • 2 0
Hey @SCOTT-Sports Its Great Smoky Mtns. Not Smokey.
  • 4 1
Yep. And the Blue Ridge is not in the Great Smokies. That's a National Park. That would be like saying come to Whistler. It's in Squamish. Pisgah National Forest and Dupont State Park are in the Blue Ridge section, part of the Appalachian Mountain range.
  • 2 1
Not hating on ya Neko. Just grammar policing the piss out of ya.

 anyone know the song?
  • 2 0
Seconded. I swear it sounds like a song I've heard, maybe by the Kooks. Can't be sure and spent too much time trying to figure it out.

  • 1 0
@gojammedia: I like Jay. Unless I could call you "Big John Schultz".

My type of trails! Beautiful. Nice video. Thanks! Ready for my group night ride tomorrow! Woot!
  • 2 0
2:21 looked fast!!!! Maybe his nickname should be MULLET MULLALY!
  • 4 4
That guy rips but I think the O-Block videos are better...Church... Disruptor...
  • 5 8
Great video. I hoped that all the climb clips would show the bike going up the technical bit he was approaching... but they all stopped before the tech bit. If considering a bike like this. The technical climb bit is what I wanted to see. Sticking a top dh rider on any bike with a high end fork and read shock, his fav cockpit and some good tyres then pointing him down... he could make it look good.

I'll never understand why pros not wear knee pads - is cause they are not cool, of course blown up knee cap is way cooler.
  • 5 0
Cause as Mr.Gwin said in his vid pro downhillers underestimate enduro just as Xc... But look at Neko's scars... Then the ones like Mr.Barel who says enduro racing is actually more dangerous than DH.. I more in this second statement...
  • 4 0
Let's all keep in mind that just because you're wearing a pad doesn't mean you land on it.
Gwin is missing a tooth from a trail ride. Should we all wear mouthpieces.
Bruni just crumbled his shoulder. Should he have been wearing football shoulder pads.

I have scars all over me. Injuries of every sort. Not one could have been prevented that one time by that one piece of protection. He's wearing a helmet to protect his mind. That's as much as you can ask without getting into a million "What if" scenarios.
  • 1 1
*is it cause they are not cool, of course blown up knee cap is way cooler?
  • 1 0
@TomasK: well why don't we all wrap ourselves in 16 layers of bubble wrap before we go riding? Then we'll never get an injury. It's personal preference man. Plus, scars are like tattoos, but with cooler stories.
  • 1 1
@Allergysix: i see you missing the point, anyway.
  • 1 0
@TomasK: I get the point entirely, I'm also a knee pad wearer. Why mess up your knees when you could just wear pads and be fine right? But that can said about any body part and ultimately there is a limit. However, who am I to judge a guy who came 4th in a WC with no chain for not wearing pads?
  • 2 0
@bizutch: I don't think many people care about getting scars; not being able to walk or ride for a bit because of a preventable bang on the knee sucks.

That mulleted man can sure flow through the chunder!
  • 1 0
 loved that trail. natural flow.
  • 1 0
3 different trails in that video. Farlow Gap to Daniels Ridge (really rocky up top...as in almost stop you in your tracks constantly), Pilot Rock (he literally video-ed the only semi-smooth bits of it). The rest of Pilot Rock just beats you to death top to bottom...but in a ridiculously fun way. Cedar Rock in DuPont - filmed a fairly smooth section of it. There is a LOT of bang, bang, bang on it, but you can pump and flow a ton of it if you choose. Off line by a hair, thump.

Anyway, Neko made them look flowy, but that's his talent.
  • 1 0
You see, smelly gloves and pads are for pussies. Try it you'll like it.

Plus 1 on Western NC. Pure mountain biking.
