Old School Throwback: Ride to the Hills

Apr 5, 2013 at 1:44
by Matt Wragg
Ride To The Hills from 2001 is an all-out metal driven freeride assault. It features all the early Canadian freeriders ripping it up on what have now become the standard locations from The Shore to Virgin, Utah. You will get a glimpse of the short lived urban freeride trend and a lot of XC helmets. There are plenty of big Southern Utah hucks long before Rampage was conceived. Darcy Wittenburg of The Collective/Anthill worked on the cinematography and was there ever a film where Sterl wasn’t somehow involved? - Jason Chamberlain – from the archives of Cinema Gravity

i understand that this movie was way before my time in mountainbiking came to be, but now that i have finally see a bit more of the culture and where it came besides all of the NWD movies. i appreciate these guys for killing it and furthering the sport we all love. and on top of that. i appreciate pinkbike for giving me a chance to see this epic film.

I was at the premier in Vancouver. It was a great night and the place was packed. Dave and Andrew stole the show and it was this movie that really flipped the switch to big mnt riding. I dig what Crankworks has done over the years but I think if you asked Dave or Thomas back then if short travel bikes doing 6 tricks while riding past a multitude of useless lines was the future...the would've laughed. Rampage is the exception. Bottom line... Wicked movie.

Such a classic! Would love to know where some of these riders are today? Jesse Roberts had a ton of footage in this video - does he still ride? I think I may have heard of that Wade guy a couple of times since RTTH...

The good old days... back when you didn't have to spend $5000 to get a Shimano XT level bike...The wages haven't changed, but the bike prices keep going up and up...

the bikes were every bit as expensive back then, not to mention everything weighed a ton and didn't work worth a damn. The m1 shandro rides is one of the few bikes back then that didn't ride like complete shit or break every 2 weeks. I dont know how wade did it on those old rockys, so much skill and flow

I saw the premiere of this flick at the SRAM party at Sea Otter that year. Pretty awesome. Wade was a few feet away while my friends and I hooted and hollered. We were in awe of that step down he did at the end. So awesome.

That was awesome! I've never seen it before. I just saw Ryan Leech at a bike show last month and he's got some mad skills! Was Dangerous Dave riding 24" wheels? Sterling Lawrence has been entwined in the best of everything visual presented about mountain biking; he's a master.

You mention Darcy and Sterling in the intro but you must remember this was a one off flick by Jorli Ricker, he was the main man behind all of this movie and he has a very unique and creative vision. If you sled check out the Fourcast series of movies which Jorli has made since, they are epic!

I remember watching all the Kranked and NWD films at this time. While those were great films in their own right, Ride to the Hills was different and better for some reason. I just wanted ride like every single one of those guys. Thanks for bringing it back into the limelight.

This honestly gets me more stoked to ride than some of the new stuff that's come out
