Kenda Honey Badger DH Pro Review

Kenda Honey Badger DH Pro 26 X 2.4"

Kenda's Honey Badger, originally introduced as a jack-of-all-trades XC/trail tire, recently gained a bit of width and a different casing to transform into the DH Pro version, which comes in a 2.4” width for both 26” and 27.5” wheels. Three different compound options will be available: Race Stick-E Rubber (RSR) a super-grippy 42a durometer rubber; Stick-E, a 50a slow rebounding compound, and a DH Dual Tread Compound (DTC) that uses 50a rubber on the center knobs for longer life combined with softer, 42a durometer side knobs for better cornering. The tread pattern shares the same basic design as the original Honey Badger, with two siped shark's tooth shaped center knobs and alternating rectangular and L-shaped outer knobs. The Honey Badger DH's sidewalls have been reinforced to help prevent punctures, and all versions of the tire are approved for use with sealant for running them tubeless. Weight: 1179 grams (wire bead, 26x2.4"). Price: $59.95 USD. Available: October 2014. www.kendatire.com

Kenda Honey Badger DH Pro Review
The Honey Badger's preferred environment ended up being loose, loamy trails.

Pinkbike's Take:

bigquotesOur test set of tires showed up just as the trails were making their seasonal change from wet and muddy to hardpacked and fast, the ideal time to get a feeling for how a tire will handle in a wide range of conditions. On loamy, loose trails the Hongey Badger burrowed in and gripped well, with enough support from the side knobs to really lean into them during hard cornering. In extra muddy conditions, the tires' fairly open tread pattern does a good job of shedding the slop, allowing the tread to continue to grip rather than sliding on a layer of saturated dirt. The Honey Badgers do falter in hardpacked conditions, where they had a tendency to get skittish at higher speeds. They also performed better as a front tire, since the lack of pronounced braking knobs can make them a little harder to rein in on the rear. Tread life hasn't given us anything to complain about, and although the center knobs have rounded out slightly the side knobs are holding strong, and the amount of wear is on par with what would be expected for a soft compound DH tire. Overall, the Honey Badger works best as a front tire for riders whose typical trail conditions tend to be on the loamier side of the spectrum. - Mike Kazimer

Who the hell buys tires by the pretty design of the tread? That must be the stupidest shit I've heard all week, and let me tell you, I hear a lot of stupid crap at work... Start riding, and shut up!!!

That should say it at, wears fast turns like crap and dont bother wearing it as a mud tire. This thing looks like its testis retract
when it sees wet roots. Honey Badger? I don't give a sh*it

My d*ck has good grip in loamy dirt.

they need another wider casting available like a 2.7

Thats quite some name to live up to, the Honey Badger is hands down the baddest animal on the planet.
  • 1 0
I have to disagree man the wolverine is pound for pound the toughest animal on the planet
  • 1 0
The Honey Badger is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most fearless animal in the world. For me that makes it the baddest animal on earth. But hay its all a matter of perspective.

I'd love to see a honey badger go up a against a 1500 lbs grizzly

I was waiting for this comment to appear. I even said that to myself as I clicked the link for this article.

The honey badgers on my trail bike are absolutely horrific. You can even climb a gravel fire road without doing burnouts.
  • 16 1
I don't know about you but I thought climbing fire roads without doing burnouts was a good thing
  • 2 0
Cant* I agree, the trail version sucked hard. I can't imagine this being any better.
  • 1 0
Lol, i didnt. Borrowed a bike with honey badgers on it.
  • 17 3
what the hell is going on with tire companies? Who is designing this garbage?
  • 6 7
Don't knock it till you try it.
  • 28 3
I've tried it. It's pure shit. What was Kenda thinking?
  • 10 2
interesting. Some irrelevant opinions say they are crap just from looking at them, or maybe it's because they aren't made by Maxxis. Mikes review isn't overly negative, in fact it's fairly positive while pointing out a couple of short comings. (not many products are perfect for all conditions) But then Lee thinks they are indeed shit. I'm confused...
  • 16 0
OK fine - they're thoroughly mediocre. Better than average rolling resistance so not as slow as say HR2s or Butchers. Terrible braking on steeps. Cornering is average but at least they don't lose knobs like Schwalbes. Seal up better than Contis. If you get them for free - sure try them out. But don't pay good money for them
  • 4 1
If it looks like shit, people say it's shit, and it's made by Kenda... The review translated says, this tire is O.K. in loam, if you use it as a front tire, with average wear and average performance.
  • 3 0
Thanks Lee, nice to see an honest opinion. Always feels like there's a lack of balance in these product picks. We don't care about the nice little features, we want to know if it's the best product for our money, especially compared to the product's closest competitors.
  • 5 1
my Schwalbes have never lost any knobs ever
  • 2 2
By the time schwalbes start losing knobs they are worn well beyond good condition anyway , and it's pretty much only the cheap/hard compound ones that lose knobs in my experience.
  • 5 0
Why can't they just make a Minion knock-off like everyone else is doing these days? Sure, trying to come up with something new is a good thing but only if it is actually better than the rest.
  • 1 0
leelau, I am interested in the tires you do like. My best experience has been with Schwalbe and I also really liked the HR2s that I had on for a bit.
  • 2 0
Like many people here - no Minion no interest. Minions HR2s for grip. Crossmark, Ikon for fast rolling.
  • 3 0
Its actually not hard to judge a tire by how it looks and get it right most of the time. You should be able to do that if you are designing tire treads, so that you don't come up with tires like this or Tioga Psycho Genius for example. You should have an understanding by looking at what you are designing and how it should work on the trail. 99.9% of the time, a simple tread is the best one. Oddball tread shapes do little but stand out in the shop so uneducated customers will buy them. Sometimes they will luck out with tread shape and placement and get something that works. Unfortunately this is still prevalent in the bike industry.

I had a hand in on the design of the HR2 and the centre block of the DHR2. Both very simple tires built with purpose. No weird shapes.

Yes and no. You can judge a thread by its looks but the carcass and its stiffness are just as important for confident steering, which is something you can't judge based on a picture. I used to run a Butcher Control, which has similar knobs to a Minion but due to the tyre flexing on hardpack it always felt a bit vague, unlike the heavier versions with tougher sidewalls.
  • 2 1
I rode the Minions for a long time and then tried Muddy Mary's. I found the Muddy Mary's to be superior in everything other than rolling speed.
  • 2 1
And knobs falling off left, right and centre. With the Magic Mary they seem to have nailed it for a soft conditions tyre but until they fix the durability issues I'm not going to pay 50+ euros for them.
  • 1 0
i have had no durability issues with my Schwalbe tyres ever, never had any blocks FALL off and neither has anybody else i know?
where you been buying yours, some side st in china?
  • 1 0
 Neither have I.
  • 2 0
Lee is right. I already ripped out two small center knobbs on my brand new Rock Razor Evo SS and I pinched it at the bead after a bottom out, so it is almost dead as a tubeless ready tyre.

Then well, if you ride for several years and have tried several different products you can actualy tell if tyre is sht or not just by looking at tread dedign. After many years you actualy should, or maybe you are in the wrong sport. So "dont knock it until you tried it" is fine argument for noobs Smile

Quit dragging your brakes and you won't lose knobs.
  • 1 0
That is a joke by the way^
  • 8 0
 That's nasty.

am late to the party here. have been biking for over 22 years. and have seen some shit treads come and go. this tire looks crap.

"on loamy loose trails it gripped well".

well shit a brick tell me a tire that doesnt grip well in loamy conditions. i ran geax booze (street ramp tyre = zero tread) for 4 months and got on fine from apart from the ridiculous pressure i had to run them at. but hey they gripped well in loamy conditions. living in scotland you pretty quickly find out which tyres suck and a get a good idea of which tread patterns suck. honey badger sucks. zero front end grip on the steeper stuff by the looks of it. don't give a shit about carcass etc. that tread pattern is wank
  • 4 1
Now compare this tire to another tire like a Continental or a Maxxis then that would make a good article. there are so many of these products picks that its widening my options and making it harder to decide what is best.
  • 3 1
They don't because their advertisers wouldn't agree with them saying 'pretty nice but stick to a Minion'.
  • 6 0
Unless it's loamy, Honey Badger don't give a shitload of grip.
  • 11 6
 Look at that sleepy fuck...
  • 5 1
Well it looks like some people haven't seen the video lol

I don't buy this review. God c'mon people, just because you're friends with the Kenda rep doesn't mean you can have any criticism of the tire. These look like garbage. I ran Nevegals for a year, a year I will never get back. Kenda is a very mediocre company.

This is what a minion would look like if I asked my 3 year old kid to draw it :-)
  • 3 0
seriously....looks like a small child designed the tread in MS Paint..
  • 1 1
Uh oh the guys on pinkbike say it's shit so it must be! haha i love how people on hear think that if a few people say it sucks then that is the end all be all. I have no idea if they are any good, but some people might like them if they try them, others might not.
  • 1 0
I can assure you. Almost anything from Kendall sux. Spend your money on maxxis or conti or if you love wasting cash schwalbe. Just be prepared to have random success with schwalbe. Some tyres are awesome like their HD or MM, but some make kenda look good. Depends on the batch of rubber in their Indonesian factories. Don't believe the hype, they are not German tyres !
