Brandon Semenuk

Takes Home Second Red Bull Rampage Victory

A Red Bull Rampage victory had eluded Brandon Semenuk since he first showed up and won the event back in 2008, but this year, after a disappointing finish at the Red Bull Joyride in Whistler, he arrived looking for redemption in the Utah desert. He succeeded, and one action-packed run was all it took, a run that included a technical and exposed two-stage drop, a massive flat-spin 360, a backflip off a flat drop, and a backflip one-foot can.

Oh, and let's not forget about that casual crank flip when Semenuk crossed the finish line, a little throwback move to cap off an impressive display of mountain bike wizardry. Semeunuk's melding of big mountain riding with his extraordinary slopestyle skills also earned him the People's Choice award, and another Polaris RZR (he won the award last year as well) – there's not going to be any lack of sideways sliding and drifting in the woods around Semenuk's BC compound this winter.

Danny MacAskill Fans

Bike Handling Master Releases Another Showstopper

Even though the premise of Danny MacAskill's videos is always the same – you know you're going to be watching an insanely talented guy hopping around on his mountain bike – he somehow manages to add a creative twist that makes each and every one a “must watch,” an overused term, but one that's completely warranted, especially in the case of his latest video, A Wee Day Out.

Danny rides the way most of us wish we could, and he does maneuvers that probably never even crossed most riders' minds. Riding atop a rolling hay bale? Sliding sideways over a downed log before dropping off the other side? Just another day on the bike for one of the world's most skilled riders, and motivation to get out and try new things for the rest of us.

Martin Maes

Wins the Final Round of the Enduro World Series

An exciting season of racing wrapped up on the first weekend of October as the Enduro World Series concluded in Finale Ligure, Italy. It was Martin Maes who took the win, a result that many had been predicting for quite some time, and no doubt a sign of things to come, especially since Maes is only 19-years-old.

No one questioned the fact that Maes had the speed; it was just a matter of holding it all together over the course of an entire race, something that's often easier said that done. It all came together in Finale, and Maes emerged victorious, winning four out of seven stages to stay ahead of Richie Rude and Nico Lau. Expect to see even more from Maes next season when next racing begins again in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Untouchable on just about every stage this weekend Martin Maes eased it in on stage 7 to ensure his first ever EWS win.

Graham Agassiz

What Could Have Been...

Aggy was on a barnburner of a run at Red Bull Rampage, hellbent on finally taking home a win after so many years of narrowly missing that top step. He charged straight down the center of the venue before spinning a smooth 360 off an enormous stepdown... And that's when it all began to unravel. The rotation looked perfect, lining him up for a smooth touchdown on the massive transition, except for one thing: the wind had pushed him off course, and his landing was three feet to the left. In the blink of an eye his bike's rear wheel hung up on a shelf of rock, tossing him brutally down an ungroomed slope full of rocks and dirt. It was a gut-wrenching crash, painful to watch even for those thousands of miles away from the event.

The final diagnosis was a broken pelvis and two months off the bike, which is obviously far from ideal, but the outcome could certainly have been worse – here's hoping for a speedy recovery and quick comeback for one of the most stylish freeriders on the planet.

The most gut-wrenching moment of the day no question was Aggy s horrendous spill after getting blown off-line attempting to spin his cliff-drop. Healing vibes from all at PB

Float X2 Owners

Fox Issues Recall

Fox's Float X2 shock quickly became a favorite among racers and aggressive riders alike thanks to its ultra tuneable design and fade-free performance no matter how long or rough the course. Unfortunately, it turns out there was an issue with the air sleeve, and according to a press release issued by Fox, “Float X2 shock absorber air sleeves can rupture due to the increase in internal air pressure which occurs during shock absorber compression.”

Exploding shocks are never a good thing, which is why Fox has advised riders to “immediately stop using this product unless otherwise instructed.” More details are available here: ridefox.com/recall, but unless the shock was shipped after September 9, 2016, and has "250 psi max" printed directly under the air fill boss on the outer sleeve, Float X2 owners will need to have a free repair performed on the shock before riding it again.

I really hope there's a Float X2 review somewhere out there in which the verdict was that it's "the bomb."
  • 8 7
I'm sure that Cane Creek might have a few of those references floating around as well.

Am I correct is reading that the only difference between the "exploding shocks' and the "non-exploding shocks" is the sticker that says that they may explode?
  • 29 0
@Thustlewhumber: No. The new fix includes a thicker diameter air can as well as a set screw that prevents it from turning and unthreading without the use of a tool.
  • 8 0
@mikekazimer: and a modified volume reducer specification depending on the stroke length.
  • 3 2
Cane Creek had swelling air can issues with CCDB Airs lately, but no explosions.

I reckon Fox are really feeling the pressure with this recall.

I don't get why it takes so long for them to inform their customers. It was already fixed early September so they must have discovered the issue late August or so. I understand software developers are reluctant to publish a vulnerability in their product until they also have the fix to prevent abuse in the mean time. But in this case it seems like Fox was afraid for the shitstorm if they'd have to tell their customers late summer to stop riding their bikes until Fox has the capacity to fix these units. Understandable, no one wants to miss riding in September and October. But then again, no one wants their air can to explode while out riding either.

www.ridefox.com/recall submit shock and you will get a return authorization!!!! @mikekazimer can you please make this more clear on your Fox X2 recall page. Fox is not ready for recalled shocks to be submitted.

If only CC recalled their Inline shocks.

@vinay: This. The issue was barely a safety concern, 8/20,000 is pretty small. The storm of having to keep people of their bikes, and of those which are mostly lift-access type bikes only ridable at the bike park, would be a horrible dent in their reputation. Better late than never, as this still is a Voluntary recall.
  • 1 0
@siderealwall2: They're probably not in the position to issue a compulsory recall, are they? But they did make it sound urgent. I'm not saying they should have been able to instantly sort it for everyone on the spot. But it would at least have been fair to inform their customers. They can then choose to take the risk or not. It may not jive if they were holding up an image of being infallible. But as it is now they're dropping it anyway but also building an image of being unreliable. I actually appreciate it if a company informs their customers that there is a problem, they don't have a solution right away but they're working on it.

@vinay: To be perfectly honest, me and a few friends visually knew this was happening as early as Mid-September. The release of information was, in my eyes, a preventative measure. They had a rolling change in their production line, and I even bought one of the newer X2's and the only issue I had running 150 with the can filled to the brim with volume spacers was with the LSC adj. leaking some oil after a really fat huck.

That 360 attempt... I leaped out of my chair when he sent it. The disbelief of it happening quickly turned to concern. And then to being bummed right the F out. Heal up, G. That was MASSIVE.

Bad Month for PlanetX, On One and Chain Reaction Cycles

dirtmountainbike.com/news/planet-x-sheds-almost-half-staff-brexit-blamed.html

I expect these will not be the last such stories, given the cliff demand for bikes fell off this year.

I bought two One-One Inbreds and a 45650b from Planet X over last couple of years with no dramas, and was in the process of buying a Titus Fireline a year ago. I handed over $1100 and waited for the frame to turn up. Nothing showed up, so after four months of un-returned phone calls and emails asking to give me my frame or money back, I got a lawyer to contact them. Had someone email a day later saying my money would be returned. The Planet X Facebook page was business as usual, promoting the company, so I knew something was up. I guess people conveniently blame Brexit for their business failures now.
  • 1 0
@zorba73: I do know that the us headquarters for Planet X/on one/Titus burned down in Oakridge, OR and they did some huge reworkings to the company at that time. Maybe it was around the same time as your purchase?
