FOX 34 Float 831 - Eurobike 2013

Aug 28, 2013 at 3:42
by Mike Levy

A Burlier 831

FOX's 831 dirt jump and slope fork has, up until now, been based on their 32 chassis, with the 32 referring to the diameter of the fork's stanchion tubes. The result was a relatively light overall package - FOX claims just 3.67LB with a tapered steerer - although many wondered why FOX didn't utilize their torsionally stiffer 34 chassis given the fork's intentions, including some of their sponsored riders. 2014 will see a brand new 831 model that does exactly that, with it being based around the burlier 34 fork chassis. The weight penalty is slight - FOX says it comes in at 4.26LB - but word from their riders is that they are noticing a dramatic improvement in rigidity, especially when landing off-kilter. Interestingly, they are also reporting a pronounced boost in rigidity on take off, which doesn't come as a surprise when you consider the loading forces that likely occur when a rider sets up for a difficult trick on a jump face.

FOX 34 Float 831 Details

• Intended use: dirt jump
• Travel: 100mm/4''
• FIT CTD damper
• Dirt jump specific valving
• Extra progressive air spring
• Kashima coating
• Taper steerer tube only
• 15QR thru-axle
• Weight: 4.26LB
• MSRP: TBA

The 34 Float 831 is far from a standard 34 internally, and you'd be mistaken for thinking that its FIT CTD cartridge makes use of stock 2014 valving. Yes, the fork's CTD dial still features the three 'Climb', 'Trail', and 'Descend' denotations, but FOX has drastically altered the latter two
damping circuits to better suit the 831's intentions. As you might expect, both the Trail and Descend settings see a far firmer tune that is more in line with what a dirt jump or slope rider is looking for, that being a much more supportive stroke that not only allows for maximum pop off of a lip but also able to absorb overshooting a landing or coming in nose heavy. The fork's air spring volume has also been adjusted with this in mind, and it features a far more progressive ramp up for the very same reason.

While the new 34 Float 831 does make a lot of sense, it should be mentioned that it will only be available with a tapered steerer tube. This fact means that some riders who own steel dirt jump frames with a standard 1 1/8" head tube are out of luck. It is for this reason that FOX will keep the current 32 831, with its optional straight 1 1/8" steerer tube, in the lineup until demand fades.

so youre only appealing to about 20% of the market MAX, still using the 15mm axle that is part of the reason the 32s are flimsy as shit, and still refuse to give us a fork that has a high/low compression adjustment instead of a CTD, which makes no sense as you arent going to change spring firmness on the fly at all on a dj bike.

no wonder people are resorting to finding 5 year old 36 floats and lowering them, even that 'old technology' works better for our needs

Quickly switch to "Climb" setting moments before take-off for best result.

i have a 2012 Fox 32 float at 120 and its a rlc. its worked great on my dj ive never had any problems with any of my fox forks.
  • 21 2
yes Npacholko and then do a crown grab and unlock it for the landing this seems sensible.
  • 8 1
I saw it a while ago an was thinking about getting one for the ticket s then I realized I have a revelation with a 20MM axel! And I lowered it.
  • 30 6
 1) give us a 20mm thru axle.
2) make it 36. you just wasting a hell of a lot of development and testing to only make the stanchions 2mm wider. we pinkbikers expect better from you, Fox.
  • 17 1
Poor show. I'll stick with my 08 36 any day.

Glad to see the gimmicks don't work on everyone. I don't know much about Fox, but it sounds like they're going the way of Marz', strong showings at first, then absolute shit to follow.
  • 11 2
this is highly upsetting, ive only been waiting like 2 years for a 34 831, and now i find out, its just shit, and not compatible with my bike. thanks fox, dropped the ball. unfortunate.
  • 6 0
Yeah.. the 34's still break, 36 all the way in my opinion. If you ride dirtjumps/slopestyle, things are gonna break, period.
  • 9 2
36 for life. Float 36 lowered to 80mm, Hi/Low Compression, super stiff and my DJ bikes still weighs in under 27lbs. Not sure what those guys at Fox are thinking. If someone is dropping $1K for a fork to hit big ol' stuff like the Crankworx SS course, I wanna KNOW it's not going to break. Unlike the Fox pro riders, if we the customers break something no one will replace it. They say it shouldn't have broken we must have been abusing it. Make it stronger then.

Oh wait, Tapered steerer, can't use it anyways. Wah wah wah.
  • 9 2
tapered steertube, wider stanchions... and they still refuse to put a 20mm through axle on it?? fox must be making money on the conversion kits or something.. hope this bombs and they go back to the drawing board to put something worth spending money on
  • 1 1
you can lower the new 36 to 100 or less as well. you just need a guy who knows his way around a fox fork
  • 4 0
Hell a monkey could do it you just snap on some spacers and your done.. literally.
  • 4 1
I think their biggest mess up was with the CTD. Everything else seems fine with the exception of the tapered steerer. I don't have a DJ bike but even I see that that was a stupid move.
  • 9 1
Never seen so much hate for a new product it's kinda funny how much badly they seem to have misjudged the market.
  • 3 1
ive got a 2010 831 and i run it at the stiffest setting and love how light it is. i wouldnt get one of these things
  • 1 0
Maybe just go 15mm 34 float, 20mm 36 float and 20mm 34 float. Then you can decide what's best.
  • 9 2
Dear fox, Do your self a Favor.
Hire someone who knows the Dirt jump market. To make your products I don't know. Appealing?
Your destroying the 831 by making everything new about it useless to your market. Tappered and 15mm and CTD THE f*ck IS THAT?
Figure your shit out!
  • 9 0
a 20mm 34 rlc 831 sounds like a fork that id wanna buy.
  • 3 0
^Its as easy as that, and there guaranteed sales. yo13bo isn't even exaggerating at all when he says 20% of the market. They'd be lucky to get even 10%.
  • 5 0
I'd buy a 20mm 34 rlc 831, in straight steerer. More bikes are compatible.
  • 1 0
A bunch of the fox slope riders were hinting at this and I was stoked to see it out soon. But now I agree, I'm pretty disappointing to see they only have tapered steer and 15 mm axel. I just purchased a 2013 float 36 and lowered it to 100 mm. It still has a 20 mm axle and its pretty light under 5 pounds. I know a 34 travel fork tuned for dirtjumping would be a better fork for my hard tail needs, but I guess I just cant have one haha.
  • 4 0
im just going to buy an argyle and all my problems will go away.
  • 2 0
Big dissapointment from Fox forks. Stick to xc/dh, or do some research before dropping another overpriced shit fork for dirt jumpers.

If his frame is only 1 1/8, this is probably a pricey fork. Anyone who is affording a top of the range current fork probably has a tapered head tube.
  • 26 0
Its on a Santa Cruz Jackal. I presume that doesn't equate to a good enough frame to run taper?

My mistake.

@swindelhurst I wasn't referring to the 1-1/8th inch aspect I was referring to the CTD aspect of his comment. He can try one out you know... Also 1.5 is stiffer anyway so whats the point of 1-1/8th
  • 6 0
2011 & CTD is pointless on a dirt jump/4x fork. Why would you want to adjust from climb, trail or descent when all you need is high and low speed compression on a dj/4x fork.

I wonder why Fox even make these if they are such a niche fork. They can't sell that many surely?
  • 2 1
You can have a shiny new frame with 1 1/8" headtube, for at least one segment... I freaking dare you to find a 24" specific bike with a tapered head tube.
  • 8 2
1 1/8 frames that have 44mm internal diameter headset, can also run a tapered fork with AN EXTERNAL LOWER CUP
  • 14 4
Suspension companies build forks out of fork parts, not out of thin air and rainbows. Sitting in the Fox factory are giant bins of 32 mm chasis, air springs, RLC/CTD dampers, and for years Fox built and sold a "dirt jump" fork out of those very same parts, and the difference was in the valving. As in, shim. Orifice. Needle. Very small, cheap differences.

Now the 34 is the hot ticket. The 831, whatever stanchion size, is always going to be built from spare Float parts. Get over it. The number of high spending park/dirt jumpers in the world is reletively small. 4X and slalom racers have been landing huge (albeit smooth) on the 32 for years. Fox is not going to design you a fork from the ground up.

Start an aftermarket company that cheaply adapts the new 36 float down to 100 mm, complainers.
  • 2 0
i thought you could already easily lower the 36 float to 100mm with travel spacers..?
  • 3 1
so they wont design a fork for whats its intended to do? i understand that its cheaper to produce with the parts they have around their factory but then why in the hell do they charge a premium? maybe because its kashima.
  • 8 1
They charge a premium because it's fox... Stop buying their stuff and they might realize it's overpriced.
  • 1 3
ehhh, i get good ass deals on all my fox stuff. so ill pass (as in keep buying).. the fact that i can get em for cheap, a great chassis to start with, and also a highly tunable fork (by fox, push, or avy.. hell, anyone!) seems like a win win for me.

i just dont buy anything with CTD in it Wink

stop whining about ctd so much just tune it on one of the settings you like and dont touch it . i agree about the 15mm axle thats just stupid and uncommon 20m is the way to go but 34 mm stanctions are still bigger than rock shox and lets face it no one is going to buy marzo dj forks theyre just too heavy for its application if your against it so much just buy a domain "you can buy shorter ti springs or cut the one that comes with it my buddy did it and it looked sick and was fairly light because he put a ti spring "FROM FOX IN IT" it simple get a conversion kit for the 15mm and buy a new frame theonly decent frame with a 11/8 head tube is diety anyway
  • 6 0
Ok, so your saying a *Deity (yes i'm correcting you here) frame is the only frame worth buying in 1-1/8th? Haha NS Majesty isn't good enough? My Santa Cruz Jackal? What if you own an older frame with 1 1/8th headtube or don't want to sell the frame for some as others put, "thrown together with spare parts" forks? I agree Deity are good but other brands are just as good. Some of us aren't made of money to change a frame, fork, headset and hub/adaptor everytime a new standard is released.

Also, use punctuation. Its difficult to understand your misunderstood thoughts.
  • 2 1
Tbh if there is enough demand for it (which there obviously is) then I don't see why fox would not offer a 1-1/8th inch in the future.
  • 1 4
i dont look into those much the only good ns stuff is theire part colors and hubs personally i dont like jackals either no offence but pivot points, p3s,and some transitons ,banshee amps and the best dj/slope by far is either rocky slayer slop or ticket s jiust my thought and hub conversion kit are only abt 3o bucks anyway i highly doubt you actually feel your axle flexing anyway

Hello FOX, I'm not sure if you've been listening but people don't want the FKN CTD!!! Maybe Fred who never wants to turn a spanner is all over it but you're loosing a lot of customers with this shit. If I was buying a fork tomorrow I'd be getting RS or Marz and i've been a loyal fox guy for years. Shiny gold coatings can only carry you so far.
  • 8 1
Same here, Fox fan for years but went back to RockShox (currently RL & RLT models) - cheaper and straightforward.
  • 4 2
 rockshox>fox
  • 6 7
Have you seen RS internals. Its practically plastic compared to Fox internals. You are all whining because they are more expensive, it's the same for cars, motorbikes and most other forms of transport.
  • 4 1
not to mention, the offerings from smaller companies like X-Fusion and SR Suntour are getting better and better
  • 3 0
Up until two years ago, 4 of my last 5 forks were fox. Last year I went with a manitou tower and this year a x-fusion trace. The prices are better, the quality is the same and they're actually offered with the features I want. I will likely never buy a CTD fork.
  • 3 1
Seems a fox fan boi didn't like my comment. Why are fox and Spesh fanboys so full of shame it's palpable

Tbh I've ridden RS, one MZ and tested a Durolux. I really liked the Durolux and the MZ (can't remember the model, maybe a 66) and I think it's pretty obvious I like Fox. RS are just too cheaply made. I get Fox cheap as well.

"While the new 34 Float 831 does make a lot of sense" - PB

The fork makes ZERO sense. CTD on a DJ? Tapered steerer only?

PB, stop writing and just post pictures please. Your articles are garbage.
  • 5 0
Why don't they do a Bunnyhops Jump Street (BJ's) version? or just make something that works for it's intended use out of the box? My new Commencal has a CTD fork AND IT IS WANK! Just make a damper that works really well. Who cares about the rest!
  • 5 0
CTD that people who ride this fork don't need, tapered steerer only, mega expensive!! Looks like Fox are onto a winner!! All the people need who ride this type of fork need is stiffness, good damping, light weight and good value for money. Looks like they have missed a trick here.
  • 5 0
Lets see - Dirt Jump specific valving and CTD, WTH, did not want to create a Dirt Jump specific Damper??? Then again I am sure you don't ever see any Fox rep at your local dirt jumps getting any input from the guys out actually riding :/
  • 6 1
 1) make a fox 34 CTD
2) lower the fork
3)put a stiffer shim at a random place and say "new dirt specific damper"
4) call it 831
5) you have a new dirt jump fork
  • 6 0
CTD on that type of fork is nonsense, frankly I don't like the CTD on any of their current forks. The RLC/RC2 adjustment were the king.
  • 2 0
 RC2 ALL THE WAY!
  • 5 0
How many 831's did you see at crankworx this year? I'll stick with my DJ1 thanks.

also.... wtf do you need trail adjust or whatever it's called on a dedicated dj fork? and no 20mm? stupid
  • 3 0
Climb Trail Descend. I'm with you when you say I'll stick with my DJ1. I'm incredibly ashamed... 1 1/8 straight aluminum steerer with internal tapering and a 20mm axle would make this fork a must want... Also ditching the CTD and putting a small rebound and compression damper would make a lot of riders set on what they need... Even Rockshox with the Argyle was a simple design and is a perfect fork.
  • 4 0
Why CTD on this kind of fork? Who needs that kind of thing when dirtjumping/street is conserned? It just makes it more expensive and there's more things to worry about. Keep it simple. Plus 15mm axle seems like an odd choice for this fork...
Guess it works for someone. But I have to admit that it looks sweet.
  • 8 0
Adding half a pound+ to a fork is slight?

Fox is a big Pinkbike sponsor...lol
  • 6 0
Fox is so out of touch these days...

MSRP: TBA

More like.. "We'll tell you later about how our inferior DJ fork is going to cost you a grand..."
  • 3 0
Fuck tapered steerer! I've run fox 831s since they started and never had a problem with the steerer! The first version creaked a little bit after a while but the next year and since then, nothing. CTD is fairly pointless and I did prefer the lockout and threshold dial quite a lot more. If they were going to change anything it would be the stupid weak lower crown, I've snapped two and seen others crack and snap also.
  • 6 0
"some owners who own steel dirt jump frames" at least half dirt jump frames are steel...
  • 2 0
Why create a DJ fork with a tapered steerer only, when the majority of DJ frames still use a 1 1/8" headtube? I can live with ctd and a 15mm axle as I have hubs that can be converted. Seem like Fox have missed the point of this fork.
  • 6 0
Would Love to try One but im to much in Love with marzocchi, sorry fox
  • 5 0
Sorry I'm sticking with my X fusion SLANT RL2 nice and simple and work so much better that my older fox forks .
  • 4 2
If you're a DJer and you put these on your bike all you're saying is you have more money than sense. Give me a pair of Manitou Circus- amazing value and performance- they have 20mm axle and standard steerer. These Fox forks are nothing short of a joke.
  • 2 0
Fox you've overdone it, as Dj'ers we want simple, stiff, and light. No need for all the extra features, they will rarely be utilized. If only they would listen to the riders who actually purchase their parts. On a go forward basis you are still going to see people who can afford this fork opt for something else such as an Argyle or Circus, less expensive, no large performance difference when riding through jumps, and is eligible to be mated with their current frame(s) and hubs. 15mm and taper come on!
  • 1 0
I liked my 32 831, until I bent the crown like I did on a previous pair of float xtt with qr :-( I want the 34 but want rc2 and 20mm bolt threw, or maybe I'll have to use my 36 talas rc2, the 15mm bolt threw is made by shimano, so they make money from them to, wether from making or seeking the rights to diff to make them, either way fix is not thinking of the customer out they would have never bought the 32 831 in first place an bought out a 34 rc2 with 20mm.
  • 3 2
This fork was originally designed for the now forgotten 4x discipline, not for dirt jumping, but now its Fox's dj fork it needs threshold lockout and a 20mm axle, no fancy CTD crapola, and kashima coating kind of goes against the idea of the fork - why use extra low volume air chamber and firm damping but then provide buttery smooth ultra expensive low friction stanchions - anodized ones would help firm the fork up! And how many hardtails have tapered steerers!? just silly!
  • 2 0
4x is far from forgotten mate! You not seen the 4x Pro Tour, 4x world champs 4x Euro series or even the British 4x series. Just because UCI dropped it in favour of that XCE shite doesn't mean it dead!!
  • 1 0
CTD is there coz its the only damper Fox has for the 34 and I think I'll trust Fox to beef up the damper just fine whatever knob-end dials sit on top. 15mm Q/R axle is there coz the 34 lowers only come as that option - far bigger problem Fox. Wifey runs an 831 on her Yeti DJ. Fine for her, too flexy for me. Even with her riding I can see wear on the axle where it twists/flexes. I'll stick with my 36Talas's running at 120mm and put up with the slacker HA. Stiff as I need it. Axle clamped both ends. No twist.
  • 2 0
831 is the Aptos Post office jumps postcode... Pretty sure it was a Cam McCaul inspired DJ specific fork... (no doubt with obvious 4x capabilities)
  • 1 0
831 is the area code for the telephone numbers in that region of California (Santa Cruz, Aptos, Capitola), but we knew what you meant. the postal/zip code is a five digit number that also represents a geographical region but from a snail mail location address standpoint.

can you boys and girls guess where five ten came from? Wink
  • 1 0
It's the top climbing grade. Five Ten specializes in climbing shoes, no?
  • 5 0
I'm gonna guess $700-$800 msrp. And what is the point of CTD on a dj fork?
  • 3 0
This might be the supidest thing ive seen in a while, thats presented in a 'we got thhis all figured out' kind of way ;-) too bad. 34 chassis is fine.
  • 4 0
Waited for a 34 Fox 831 but... no 1.125" steer tube anymore and Climb Trail Descend on DJ fork. Seriously???
  • 4 0
HA ha. Ctd on a DJ fork. Do you set the fork to trail or descend? Does it have a jump setting?
  • 1 0
The reason for CTD, 15mm axle and everything else is probably because they didn't want to develop an entirely new fork for DJ, which is a small market. So they just took the existing Fox 34 chassis and adapted the internals to DJ. Cheap, easy and now you have a new product. Atleast it saves the trouble of doing the modifications by yourself. I think the reason for Kashima is the marketing decision that all their aftermarket forks have it?
  • 1 0
For DJ: 34 yes, Taper no, CTD No. Just release a 26" wheel specific float 34R 1 1/8 OR Taper and you have a winner. Custom travel adjust from 60-140. Covers all bases, simple, clean, light and strong. "Keep it simple". Thats the name of my company and the ethos works!!!
  • 5 1
Ive been waiting for this fork forever, but will not buy because of the dumb CTD. Circus it is!

FOX: eat a Snickers bar, you get a little loopy when you're hungry
  • 1 0
why would you not offer 1 1/8 steerer, yeh i am sure it is a stiffer crown with the taper but its irrelevant if it won't fit the vast majority of bikes that this is suited for, an it will also be a silly amount of money with a pathetic amount of margin for shops. cheers fox!
  • 2 1
Bike companies need to learn that dirt jumpers are massive cheapskates and have massively unreal expectations of how hard they ride. Your landing on smooth transitions you don't need a 36mm 20mm axled fork if the EWS racers dont get over yourselves. Most of you probably have 2006 dirt jam pros covered in monster stickers.
  • 1 1
It's not that they might not be strong enough for most people. Like when you have 20mm axle, finding hubs and using the ones you already have is easier. Plus it's stronger so why trying to develop new standard that doesn't have any benefits?
  • 4 0
BIG LOL with CTD for dirt ???!!!!!! bitchhhh pleassseeeee
  • 2 1
Nice looking fork but I think I'll wait for 2014. 4lbs is still extremely light for me and rather have the 34mm stancions. Good to see that fox realized 26" had to be included, specially for dirtjumping.

Also I think this fork is designed around pro dj bikes like cam mccaul and brett heeder since they both ride fox and trek with those tapered steer tubes
  • 2 0
So stoked for these to be available! Personally really like CTD and love my 2013 831's. Looking forward to an improved and stiffer fork for 2014!!

Agreed, I'll take a Circus Expert anyday. I don't care about the weight difference. At least Manitou knows what people want.... 1 1/8" steerer, high/low spd compression, 20mm hex-lock axle that whoops Fox's 15mm ass. That's all you need when you're popping doubles and boosting transfers. Did I mention Manitou forks are actually affordable?!

setup your circus with soloair instead of spring+air and you have a nice fork with a 1.8 kg weight )

Fox your wasting your time with the 34 platform. Make a 36 dj specific fork and make your customers happy.

And that's y I bought an argyle! Fox your very silly.

Pf.... 2Kg for fork, only tapered, CTD controls. Fail! 831 2011 rulez.

140 travel 34 is needed too.
