New Union BOA Flat offers enhanced fit and performance

We have added another elite model to our Union mountain bike shoe line. The new Union BOA® Flat features the same excellent performance as the Union Flat shoe but with the enhanced fit of a BOA Fit System.

The Union BOA Flat uses the same one-piece, welded upper construction as the Union BOA, including a molded toe cap and reinforced toe box to protect against the elements and rock strikes. The BOA Dual Dial Li2 system offers a secure and precise fit with on-the-fly micro-adjustability and multidirectional adjustments for tightening and loosening. Combined with Fox’s proprietary Ultratac™ outsole with best-in-class grip and durability, the Union BOA Flat provides improved power transfer to the pedals and added confidence on and off the bike. The custom hex-shaped lugs are specifically designed to deliver control on flat pedals, while the toe and heel lug spacing is suited for hike-a-bike sections.

Sizing matches the rest of the Union line, ranging from 37-47 EU (5.5-13 US Men's / 6.5-14.5 US Women's) with half sizes available from 41-46. The Union BOA Flat will be offered in three colorways – Black, Gray, and Vintage White. The Union BOA Flat will also include two pairs of arch height inserts to customize fit.

 For the BOA haters who want something other than laces, check out the Crankbrothers Stamp Speedlace. Good grip, loads of protection and padding, and muy comfortable. Coming off Freerider Pros and I've been super impressed so far.

 $285 CAD...no thank you. I love the concept, and once I get a better look at the shoes from the FOX site, they do not look that bad (white...ugh)...but the price is just crazy.

 I love my current Fox Boa clips, but agree they are pricey. I was able get them at a large discount from Pro’s closet (thought they were going out of business price was so low back in December).
Overall the shoe performs well and I’m happy with it. I have an occasional stuck boa dial from debris but it loosens after a small yank.

 Definitely like the location of the Leatt Moz in the middle of the tongue much better. I don’t think the fox would get destroyed right away, but they are more vulnerable on the side to the occasional rocks I clip with the outsole.

 I'd rather scuff a dial on a rock than let my shoelaces get stuck in my chainring. I'm biased toward BOA, but these new dials seem super robust. Anything can be broken, and you can't beat the ability to just steal the laces off your Vans if you need them, but my Shimano XC9s and RC Tallac BOA have ridden thousands of miles with only a bit of hosing-down to keep the BOA dials clean.

 @BsampSy: Scuff away. Just simply stating that I prefer the Leatt MOZ (their boa version) location in the middle of the tongue.

 Has anyone ridden these soles who can provide a reality check on 5.10 versus "best in class grip"?

 I like my shoes/pedal combo as grippy as possible and can confirm they are every bit as grippy as 510 or the new Spesh rubber, if not better. The sole is also firmer which I like for pedaling power and to keep my feet comfy on descents. They also have the best toe protection of the bunch imo.

 @Symmech: Wow! After years of no competition for 5.10 suddenly we have a bunch of it. Giro with grippy soles, Specialized with grippy soles, maybe we'll get BOA on top and waterproof flats in the future too! Forget bike wars, bring on the shoe wars.

 @Mtmw: Shimano already release their waterproof BOA flats earlier this winter. SH-GF800GTX...and they're cheaper than Fox non-waterproof BOAs.

 I have long wondered why boa wasnt on flat shoes and now they are available! And they make them in my size of tiny feet. But they are Fox and I dont want them.

Cant I have a 5:10 Trailcross XT flat shoe with a boa like the 5:10 Trailcross clip in?

 Pearl Izumi have been doing them for a while (3-4 years?). X-Alp Launch and X-Alp Flow Pop

I have a couple of pairs as my around town/ pump track daps and they are grippy (Chromag Scarab and North Shore Billet Daemon pedals, and one wet rocks etc when walking about). They wear fairly well.

I have a paid of Pearl Izumi clip in shoes with boa as my turbo trainer shoes - I like the boa feature on them and they are good to their purpose - never tried the flat versions. Got them as they were cheap!

 @paulskibum: for what it's worth i have the ride concepts tallac boa (boa, available as clip or flat shoes) in size 7 and they're great, the flume boa (women's version of the tallac boa) should be great if you're less than size 7.

 @cookiemonster615: Whups I forgot the serious part of my answer. Agreed. Boa sells replacement/repair kits and has good instructions on the process. I keep one in my travel toolkit that I thankfully haven’t used yet.

 For those not getting the reference (this is an MTB site afterall). MVDP crashed with about 15km to go in last year's road World Champs and broke the top boa dial and half of his cleat. Somehow the dude brushed it off and managed to win even though he had only a 30 second lead over a super strong group behind him. Hate on roadies all you want, they take suffering to another level.

 @tomfoolerybackground: Thankfully the newer dials are closer to the former than the latter. You literally pop the dial off with a flathead screwdriver or a key, cut the new lace to length with a pair of scissors, run it through the guides and the dial, then tie a knot in each end before snapping the dial back into place. No more Torx head screws or complicated lace spool like the old dials.

 Boa offers a life-time warranty. Just received replacement dials + strings for my 4 year old DMT road shoes. It has a clear instruction booklet with the replacement package, but haven't found time yet to get to it.
Doesn't seem too complicated though

I'd be more worried about my ankle bone than the BOA dial...one of those has a lifetime warranty.

 On long hot rides , when your feet swell, it allows you to loosen boa without having to stop if you were wearing laces. Not a problem most of the time for most people. But it is great when you need it. I would be sceptical of no Velcro at the toe end like the sworks with double boa

 @gcrider: I find the velcro tabs usually wear out before anything else, but that's the nice thing about a dual BOA shoe. Your forefoot will swell, but the heel cup might get packed out on a long sweaty ride. Loosen the lower dial and tighten the upper one. Yeah its frickin' expensive, but there is a utility value for those who would use it.

 can i see a picture of your current riding shoes with a bunch of scratches and rips on the spot where the boa is because i think you are doing this bike thing wrong.
