Race Analysis from the Leogang DH World Cup 2023

Jun 17, 2023
by Ed Spratt
Vali Hoell going for nothing but the top step on her home-track.

Leogang delivered another incredible day of racing as the second round of the 2023 downhill World Cup series wraps up in Austria. As the dust settles in Leogang it was Vali Höll and Andreas Kolb who came out on top taking their first home World Cup wins (a first-ever win for Kolb). The racing was flat-out and rowdy but apart from the winning riders who else was performing well at round two?

After a hectic day of racing let's get into the results and stats.

Love the analysis Pinkbike, thanks for the effort that goes into this

 Hey @Pinkbike:

Could you do a poll about how many of PB users actually get to watch the races?

I'd be genuinly interested to know how many of the core fans of the sport are missing out with the new broadcast limitations.
  • 18 7
follow dh for a bit more than 15 years and it s the first that after 2 races i m like "wtf happen". This new format and commentator are gonna kill the vibes that was here for years at least for me.
  • 10 1
On Youtube the peak viewership was around 6000 people for the semifinals I think.
At the risk of getting a bit of hate here ... Its pretty good coverage ! The commentary should definitely improve but besides that I think its fine. I`d rather have it free as it was the last years but I will also not give up on watching my favorite sport because of 4 bucks a month, but that`s just my opinion.
  • 2 4
The price of admission is so cheap that I don't think it makes such a difference.
  • 5 0
@asapyohanes: The coverage seemed better this week. I agree with your commentary comments, it's dreadful. Ric said to Cedric........"can you talk us through Vali Holls run Cedric......errmmmm yes she use clear lenses and others are wearing tinted! I mean WTF! There's no analysis anymore, do they even show a table of results? Definitely no points comparison etc etc. There are so many capable pundits out there.....is Eliot Jackson under a Redbull contract? Wyn Masters?

It's a travesty that only 10 women get into the final. Phoebe Gale didn't make finals in Lenzerheide by one place, but was on podium here. Having such a tiny final round is excluding potential winners from the pool. That said, no one was going to beat Vali today. She killed it start to finish. Absolutely stoked for Kolb as well.

Totally agree, it should be same as the mens
  • 14 0
@Borealwoods: It can’t be the same as the men, they don’t have enough women.
  • 19 0
Percentage wise more women make it into the semi final then the men. Around 45% of the women compared to 33% of the men.
  • 1 3
@Borealwoods: I’ve said it for years - combine mens and womens classes- prize money etc. it would solve all of these issues.
  • 16 0
Gutted for Jackson, what a pace. Kolb put down some magic in that last split.
  • 3 0
Ya, look at those stats... if he didn't mess up that corner, he would have won. But that's racing... other guys got it right and beat him. I'm sure we'll see him take a win soon.

Andreas Kolb won this race in the last corner!
  • 19 0
yes.. or Jackson overcooked that last corner and lost the race.
  • 7 0
@Lagr1980: how fast and smooth was Jackson's run? And he looks so tiny.

Ben Cathro kept talking last year about just how fast he and Jordan were and how much of a shame it was that none of their battle last year was televised.

He was not wrong.
  • 1 0
@SBdhmtb: Yeah, Jordans run ad VDS...
  • 3 0
hey @pinkbike the last graph would be interesting to duplicate and show the previous rounds also split into quali/semi/finals.over the course of the season it would show which points make the difference. could be someone gets to the top with only semi points or so

What a great race. Lived in Austria for a while, holds a special place in my heart and went to my first WC back there in '02

So happy for Andy.

What can be said about Valli Holl though? Especially after the heartache of crashes. What an absolute beast! No disrespect for any of the other super fast ladies but the way she rides is on another level.
  • 3 0
Honestly my favorite part of all of DH racing currently is Ben's story of the race. Everyone was thinking the same thing, Jackson could've won wouldn't have lost his wheel on that last loose turn, but it's cool to see the extra film analysis to confirm he lost about a second there.

Congrats Kolb, been a long time coming, been knocking on the door for a while. Great final from the riders, but I think a few steps have been taken backwards in the coverage, commentating and need to pay to view the finals, which I’m happy to pay if it’s worth it, but I think will restrict audience growth.. I have lots of friends to whom I would send out links to finals replay who have zero chance of paying, and get feedback and banter on the race. Can’t help but feel the semi/final changes are nothing more than a money grab at a time when the sport was actually getting some traction. Don’t feel like the coverage is any better, lack of Warner is glaringly obvious to anyone who’s watched previous seasons. But then again I’m an old man who won’t accept change easily, and sorry discovery but hasn’t been hard to find free streams of finals.. go internet.. EAD discovery, signed grumpy old dh’r

Coverage is much better. Red Bull never showed nearly as much of the track on livestream. Commenting isn't there yet, but I hope in the end of the season or start of the next one, it will be just as good as Red Bull.
  • 1 0
@Nuss-95: is it really? Coverage feels basically the same to me. Except the cameras are worse quality (on the GCN+ App).

Leogang and Lenzerheidi felt very familiar from a coverage perspective.
  • 2 0
@Ososmash: Yes it definitely is. Red Bull has NEVER shown a full race run. Discovery shows the full run from start to finnish for the last 10 riders. For example in Leogang, Red Bull never showed the upper bikepark section, they cut from the start gate to the stump section. On some tracks they didn't show a whole minute of the track.

For me on Desktop and the GCN+ App on iPhone the camera quality was better than Red Bull, but I have heard that the stream has low quality on some smart TVs. I hope they'll fix that.
  • 1 0
 @Nuss-95:

I haven't checked desktop top or phone (I'll have to do that.)

Stream quality on a Google Chrome is very meh. Like it's fine, but just fine.

Really hope ESO gets their metrics together. So much they could be showing us.

The good news is coverage is fine and I am okay paying for it.
  • 2 0
It’s interesting to see how the times drop spread out towards the end of the runs amongst the women finalists. The level is incredible, but the physicality of tracks like Leogang, the fatigue that is causes, must play a huge part.
  • 5 0
Great Wien by the hometown heroes.
  • 1 0
Someone get Ric and CG to look at this. Would be some great filler for the times they feel they need to repeat themselves for the 1000th time in Val di Sole. Give the people some valuable insight instead of useless chatter, adding nothing to the experience except a headache.
  • 5 1
The men’s times were insanely tight the whole race. Wild.
  • 4 0
One day Daprela is going to link a whole run together and it will be fast.
  • 3 0
Any stats on the windspeed / direction at certain timeframes while they where doing the 'motorway' section?
  • 1 0
Pretty impressive by Jackson who was a step ahead in 3/5. That last turn really cost him the win. But I'm pretty sure he, Bruni or Finn will take the overall this year. My bet is on Jackson.
  • 1 0
My moneys on Jordan for VDS, 4 seconds faster than any other time there last year...
  • 1 0
@bikes-arent-real: Didn't track conditions change a lot in VDS last year?
  • 1 0
Crazy that blown corner at the bottom for Goldstone probably cost him the win. We would have had back to back first year rookies winning the first 2 races. Going to be some very good racing this year.
  • 4 1
I need to see those graphs during the race.
  • 2 0
It’s interesting to see that the speed trap really doesn’t have much of a correlation in the men’s race.
  • 1 0
Yeah I would be interested in seeing a speed trap coming out of the last corner. The last bit of track made the biggest difference
  • 2 1
Can we get a histogram of finishing times? Would be really cool to see what distribution falls out.
