@TheEradicator: Only if it's done round robin tournament style in a best of 3 bracket and only the 2 are qualified and the total field enters into 3 rounds of LCQ's to set up the top 30 that advance to the finals, that will be run after the 31-60 super, ultra, mega, giga, mini final that will advance the winner of that into super, ultra, giga, grand final.
So they not showing semis stilll? Can any of you media guys ask Discovery peeps the rationale behind not streaming semis? There's must be a reason but i cannot fathom one for the love of God. And its driving me mad...
Is it really that hard to figure out? It’s on a different day now, so they would need to pay every single person involved in the broadcast twice. It’s amazing how everyone was whining about semis being too much of a good thing to watch last year, yet now it’s a drama it’s not being broadcast anymore
@stefkrger: I don't know if it's the case in Leogang, but they filmed and broadcast semis on the big screen in the finish area at Fort Bill and in Poland, so they're paying those people regardless.
@commental: it’s always been like that for the qualies. But they don’t have nearly as many cameras in place, most of the track is not covered. Plus announcers in multiple languages, etc
@commental: that’s what I’m saying: the crew involved in putting some video up on screen the day before (qualies during rb times, and semis now) is not nearly as big as the broadcast crew
@stefkrger: Many people going to see the races live have said what commental already mentioned, that the crew is already on site shooting the race, it's just not broadcast. In Poland you could even see the official camera crew in some of the clips UCI MTB themselves posted about the semi finals. Also last year the junior finals were the day before the elite finals and they were still broadcast, so it's not really like switching the elite semis and junior finals around has lead to more work days for the crew compared to last season.
And yes, I agree we could gladly get rid of the semis. But as long as they play an important role in the sport, I'd love to be able to see them. Especially now they've been moved to the day before, meaning you wouldn't need to binge the whole semis and finals in one go for over six hours.
@stefkrger: i loved semis last year so i guess im allowed to whin. The cameras are in place, they are streaming it to the people in the bikepark. Im not asking for announcers or anything. Just give me the same stream as the big screens at the venue. It wont cost them nothing and they would be giving small teams some exposure. It really doesnt make sense. I want to watch the not so well known riders from 30 to 60 and i cant.
@donimo: you guys don’t have a clue. I’m a regular on site at European races, and the broadcast crew on race day is much different than the day before. The reason some operators are there early is because they are figuring out camera angles, getting drones ready and debugging issues.
@stefkrger: there is no way that they have not yet a clear idea about angles etc. they will not change anything for tomorrow, because it would be a logistic nightmare and potentially interfering with the track. In my opinion the reason why they are not showing the semis is because it was cannabilising the finals, because too many people wouldn’t commit to watching both, the free and paid offerings.
@stefkrger: I‘m working in media too. Have been to some of the races as long as we had the rights And yes, you’re absolutely right. (It’s still a shame though…)
Rumours all point to a "last chance qualifier" format for next year (along the lines of top 20 from quali through to finals, then everyone else gets another try to make the top 10 of the LCQ and get through to finals), so I assume that they're thinking that if they're not going to be broadcasting anything on the quali day next year there's not much point doing it this year.
Hard to say though as they don't appear to want to comment on it.
@stefkrger: But the main point isn't the fact whether they now have a full crew on site on Saturday or not, BUT why don't they. Yes, it's of course cheaper to do one day broadcast, but the issue is they did a two day broadcast last season and instead of accepting the same costs for this season they've dropped showing the semis. People are not complaining because they want more for the same money than last year, but because we'd like the same amount of live broadcast - especially since pretty much everyone of us is now paying more for this with almost all the subscription options getting more expensive this season. Another main complaint being that even UCI/ WBD themselves stated before the season started that both the semis and finals would be available to watch again this year, then dropped the semis without any further communication. Based on all information available beforehand people expected to be able to see the semis live with the subscriptions they bought, so I think it's fair some are complaining now they aren't shown.
@mi-bike: Yes, which I too I already pointed out in my first reply. Like the fact that the junior finals were on Saturday, and we're broadcast. So it was indeed a two day broadcast last season.
@mitochris: it's easy offer it on the pay per view too... But I am paying and I cant see 66*100 of the show.. lame lame lame... And then new generations NOTHING no new engagement anf losing it... you all know what I think at these stages... I am tired of repeating myself...
Probably because last year every one said semis are stupid and cant be bothered to watch that much downhill. So many comments of people saying they wont watch semis so why bother showing them I guess?
It seems like the teams(?) have access to this footage as well. There was just a short clip in Ronan's Instagram stories where they were watching his semi run from today - which definitely looked liked it would've been cool to see in its entirety. It had all the same timing visuals as on the live broadcast. It just seems really hard to believe they don't have the entire TV team working already on Saturday, but also incredibly stupid not to broadcast the race if they're shooting it already. Like others have said, just have it run without commentary, only as a YouTube live to justify the lower production value. I mean it would beat watching these number on screen instead.
@OrangeBlood: I think that does indeed make it pretty clear. Quite obviously, they do not have the rights to broadcast semis. Which in turn means, they would have had to pay more, if they wanted said rights. Which translates to, how much more would you be willing to pay for a subscription, if it included broadcasts of the semi-finals?
@FuzzyL: They are the broadcast partners with the UCI for the whole series, but don't have the rights to broadcast something they created, in a series that they run, in a certain country where they obviously did have the rights last year? Personally I find that very hard to believe. It also doesn't explain why they haven't broadcast semis at either of the previous rounds.
@commental: I do not think the rights situation last year gives us much insight into what it is this year, I’d imagine the contract with Discovery might differ quite a bit from the one GCN had. I don’t know if Discovery has the rights to broadcast semis, so if they state they don’t I’d have to take their word for that, and from a business perspective it would definitely have made sense to give up the rights to broadcast semis, which were clearly unloved by fans last year, if that saved them any money.
@FuzzyL: The contract is with Discovery for 8 years from last year, it was never with GCN. It was Discovery that created the semis. You can take their word for it if you like, speaking for myself I'm a little less gullible.
@commental: Yeah to me that explanation sounds a bit like they'd say "Yeah we're showing Tour de France, but due to rights reasons we can't show the time trial stages. Not that anyone else is showing those either, as we have all the rights, but we just can't."
The reply given might just be poor wording/ understanding what they're talking about/ confusing communication also within the company (I'm saying this as someone who has worked in customer support functions), but no matter what, that absolutely isn't an answer making any kind of sense as is.
@somebody-else: the semis are filmed. There's a screen showing the runs at the finish line. My guess is they just don't want to pay for commentary and wouldn't want to broadcast without. They are financially on the limit, which makes me wonder why they outbid RB in the first place (if that's what happened).
Luca and Troy have been consistent as f*ck this year. That must feel amazing having a teammate right there alongside you to work with and compete against.
The team just now mentioned on Instagram he had a big crash yesterday and was feeling a bit sore. So just started to get into finals, hopefully feeling better by then.
@reddev: Aw damn, she's my favorite rider! Hope she recovers properly and that it doesn't mess with her mental strength (which is the bit I admire most).
@vinay: I think protected status for riders grant them a spot to the semi, whatever ther quali result, as long as they start a quali run. But not for the finals.
@Mightyfirelord: I don't think I've felt as disconnected to WC DH competition as this year. I don't understand/know the rules (apparently), race reports aren't really there (for elements you can win points for), I chose to not invest in the streaming service (did so last year and I don't know where the money went but it didn't seem to have gone where it should have) and now my favorite rider is out as well... Regardless of who your favorite rider is, don't you feel a bit out off touch with WC DH racing recently or is it just me getting old?
@toast2266: Now I am confused. I understood from this discussion that her protected status only grants her a spot at the semi finals, not the finals. Now that she has a DNF at the semi finals, can she still race the finals?
@yakimonti: If Laurie doesn't improve his results he will find himself on the chopping board... special when they already have a good replacement on board.
He had a crash, and needed to chill before the finals.
He's protected, to just needed to run through the start beam on both Quali's and Semi's.
It sounds like he hopes to feel good enough for tomorrow, thumb injury I think.
UCI needs to change the rule for elite women's final to: let the fastest semi final racers with the qualifying time to compete in the finals participate in the finals, the protected racers who didn’t make it to the finals in the semis, add them on to the finals. It doesn’t hurt to add extra competitors in the finals as long as they’re the protected ones. It’s not fair to the racers who qualified in the semis to get bumped off the finals by protected racers, just add the protected racers to the finals, that’s fair. UCI has always been controversial, they need to pull their heads out of their you know what’s…
Not quite sure what you are saying but nobody gets bumped out of the finals for protected riders. The protected riders are added if they finish outside of the top 10. It’s why there is 13 women in the final tomorrow instead of 10.
Fair-weather protesters are funny. How long have you been involved in speaking up about all the sickening inhumanity globally? Or maybe have you been awakened by this particular example?
And yes, I agree we could gladly get rid of the semis. But as long as they play an important role in the sport, I'd love to be able to see them. Especially now they've been moved to the day before, meaning you wouldn't need to binge the whole semis and finals in one go for over six hours.

Hard to say though as they don't appear to want to comment on it.
“I am sorry to inform you that due to broadcasting rights the Semi-finals for the downhill mountain biking is unavailable in Austria.”
Which of course completely clears that up and makes complete sense, thanks WBD.

I talked to him last year after msa, which was a pretty heartbreaking race for him, and he still was chill and taking pics with fans etc.
@commental: Yeah, I'm definitely not up to date.
But not for the finals.
It even states this at the bottom of every race results sheet.
I hate to say it, but it really isn't that hard to understand....
I have
Pierron, Lachie, Wilson, Pinkerton, Scarsi, Balanche
I second guessed and tried changing to
Bruni, Lachie, Wilson, Kuhn, Nicole, Gale
Let's see which rando-guessing method was best
As I've only got seconds title will be "Holy shit Loic!"
