Video: Reece Wallace's Silky Smooth New E-Bike Route

Dec 15, 2022
by Tannus Tires

bigquotesI love e-biking. I've always lived for the downs, not pedalling—I can ride three times as much in the same amount of time. Because of the bike's aft weight, inserts are key in not destroying rear wheels, especially on the rocky trails out my back door. Plus, I can run 16psi in the front tire, which is damn grippy - Reece

Well done, a nicely played evolution on an old classic.

I used to be so against E-bikes, until I found out the climbing nerds hated them too, talking about "you need to earn your turns" so I started to like E-bikes.

The only way to earn your turns is with hand tools. You already worked to afford your bike to ride it, you've already earned those turns. I understand the enjoyment some have for climbing, but it's weird to think everyone should have to do it as a way to "earn the ride". Those same people usually never put any work into the trails they ride. Pedaling to the top benefits noone but yourself, so who cares how you get to the top. That part doesn't matter.

LOL. Man I hate the "earn your turns" crowd in any sport. Snowboard chads are the same breed of gatekeeper when it comes to shit like this it's so annoying. I always see this as a symptom of deep insecurity and the uncontrolled urge to define yourself by a sport you didn't even invent.

I don't even have an ebike, i definitely have to "earn my turns" aka walk up f*cking hills because I'm poor, but I'm not gonna pretend like that's something I should be praised for. Who the hell proudly walks up hills. lmao.

@anchoricex: Nobody proudly walks up a hill while pushing a bike. It just shows you are weak. Pedal the f*cking thing that is what it is for.

@luckynugget: Yep. rode one up to the start of the bear mountain Dh and won the race. I also rode one up to the start of the arduum Dh and proceeded to win that one as well. My guess is I could smoke you on any DH course on a hardtail, I will even let you shuttle your bitch ass up.

@anchoricex: You are right. That was a weak response by me. I should have just ignored the comment. All I meant was that it is not hard to ride a DH bike uphill. It does not really matter what you ride or how you ride it(or push it).

Never understood the faux horror towards E bikes, I know a few people who are only riding because of E bikes, that's good in my book. I'm also guessing most of the complainers spend most of their time on a keyboard as I've never heard anyone complain to their faces, everyone is respectful and friendly on the trail. Easy to mouth off all tucked in at home.

I think it's a lot more widely accepted in Aus.

I got one in 2018 and faced a little bit of tongue and cheek flak from some people, but now most people are like "yeah I'm getting one soon too" it's a shift in attitude for sure.

Pretty sure there was a shot of that steep section on Fawn Frenzy which didn't give it much justice. I came up to that in the wet once and it made me think for a min Smile

@j-p-i: sure is. Shot on pink uni, scootaloo and fawn frenzy or lower meat draw
That spot is janky at best
  • 2 0
@jeff444: There was no Scootaloo in there, or Lower Meat Draw. But there was Upper Meat Draw.
  • 1 1
@gnarnaimo: the big rock roll is on scootaloo and fawn frenzy is actually lower meat draw.
The steep section he clearly rides. Absolutely no upper meat draw in this video

@jeff444: Lol what? The rock roll right at the start is upper meat draw watch it again. The very first shot, the chunky rock line rolling into it, there is literally no rocks to dodge before the roll on Scootaloo and the roll on Scootaloo is in a heavy tree canopy, this was clearly in the open as the opening shot was filmed on a drone. At 26 seconds if you pause it you can see the ride around to the right of the roll, there is no ride around on the right of the roll on Scootaloo. Also you can see it is high elevation from the view in the foreground (there would be no view from the roll on Scootaloo). This is the roll in the video www.trailforks.com/photo/14802862
Very obviously the roll on Upper Meat Draw.
Then right after that shot, you can see he is on this section of Upper Meat Draw www.trailforks.com/photo/17660790
Fawn Frenzy is not lower meat draw, it is Fawn Frenzy. Which the unofficial section starts at the end of the Spur where Rock Bottom ends (according to Ryan, the guy who built the trail, unofficial because it is actually not even open yet hence why it's not on trailforks). Yes lower meat draw feeds into Fawn Frenzy, but technically at this point Lower Meat Draw is over and Fawn Frenzy has started.

@jeff444: @gnarnaimo is spot on. I love that line on Upper Meat Draw. Gnarly that he aired into it, video does not do that justice

For real, I couldn't tell if it was the terrain or the bike. But he didn't look very comfortable.
  • 1 0
@KavuRider: terrain is extremely raw around here
  • 1 0
It was mostly the helmet being loose. Is that what MIPS does?
  • 1 0
@vinay: it’s extremely raw here and fast terrain on those trails. Could cause helmet to shake a bit

Nice video....I use mine to commute 33 miles round trip on trail to work.... And then I do trail maintenance. At 52... I could not do it. Well at least the work part when I get there.

Most (e-bike) comments I hear and read are from 'e-biker's' sounding defensive. On Pinkbike, in bike shops, and on the trails. I could give a rip either way, just find it interesting.
