I am really excited to have this video finished for you all finally! In this video I just wanted to show what I love to do with my friends - freeriding. This is filmed at the local mountains Ledgeview, Sumas and Vedder in the Fraser Valley.

I spent 5 different days filming this video, and its kind of like an unofficial sequel to my video 'Freeride Mountain Biking' that I released 2 years ago.

Riders:
Ethan Saathof
Jacob Dececco
Zack Schjodt

The song used in this video is called Escape From Area 51

Good edit! But if this is freeride then I don't know what rampage is Smile

 Extreme downhill?

Rampage is just.. Rampage. It's it own category! Big Grin
  • 76 12
This vid looks more like a couple hucks to flat with a few roots and berms

 ...take it easy Josh Bender...

Freeride is abstract art of mountain biking, hard to know what is freeride or downhill edit, but me i just prefer to ride my bike!
  • 19 6
This is trail riding Cool video, nice edit. I'm a bit feeling dizzy by the spinning cameras.
  • 86 14
Meh, editing and filming was tight but I feel like there are way too many edits out there of people cruising down trails that have no need for 8" of travel. Again that edit was sick but the trails were too well manicured for a bike designed to take on way more than that. Because of that, it def. took a lot away from the edit. But hey, that's my personal impression and it could very well be in the minority and it was still entertaining. It was just nothing that really uh... energized me? haha.

Also I think it's absolutely stupid to compare this to Rampage just because he included the keyword, "freeride" in it. Everyone has their own opinions of what freeriding is and that hasn't changed. Who cares.
  • 10 13
I wouldn't call it "abstract". Back in the day you had to ride what you could afford and that's how many riders got professional to begin with. Nowadays kids whine and bitch about not having the Spech which is the best bike in the world, bla bla bla, etc.

Freeride is the definition of having fun riding a bike. I did get snubbed by considering Redbull Rampage as extreme downhill but i'm quite sure 90% of the people that comment on pinkbike would end up in the hospital riding to the finish line. (or trying to)
  • 11 2
well, I was expecting to see some skinnies or a teeter totter, but to each his own :-)

Rampage to me isn't freeride.....it's big mountain/SlopeStyle......Freeride is hard to define, but......it was created buy people who lived in a certain riding environment and had incorporated tricky structure/elements that actually......slowed you down because they were technical. What this video is to me, is a Downhill/Hit Trail video.
  • 18 5
@scott-Townes if you can only afford one bike like the most of us, and you go to trail centres and bike parks with proper downhill tracks, but your local is far less technical, you would buy a downhill bike over an all mountain bike or whatever else. Right tool for the right job mate. Don't be such a snob
  • 9 10
Rampage is not free ride its a competition
  • 8 4
 It's a Freeride Competition.
  • 13 9
But free ride isant a competition
  • 25 7
Mountain biking has gone so hollywood that kids need desperately to catalog what they see.

LISTEN Y' ALL, FREERIDE IS NOT A COMPETITION nor a SPORTING DISCIPLINE!

Freeride is exactly what the word says "free" + "ride". It means, to roam free, with no rules or directions. Is that so hard to acept?
  • 8 6
And Rampage is a Freeride Competition.
  • 3 1
Depending how do you see the rampage, for me it's just an incredible meeting between all the best riders in the world who shred some beautiful and hardcore line with fun, risks and style to prush the sport's limits away! Some other thinking it is a contest! As you want!
  • 3 2
Yes, you are right, but it is a competition, a freeride competition - There is Judging.
  • 21 3
that movie should be named 'this is too much posing'
  • 14 2
What's with all the morbid stairing?
  • 4 1
You really want to get the point across that rampage is a freeride competition don't you @dirrrtjump?! Wink
  • 3 3
Sometimes i'm just in the mood to discuss all day long Big Grin
  • 2 3
 I totally agree!
  • 7 2
I'm waiting for Free-enduro to catch on. Then I'm on it.
  • 7 2
Whats with all the negative comments this morning?!? Nice video man.
  • 10 4
I did agree with the comment about the whole needless 8'' of travel or full on DH rigs for polished trails, it's a bit overkill. But it was a sick video regardless. I enjoyed but I also felt there was too many shots of the riders sitting there, I'd rather watch people ride, but then again that's just my opinion. I'd still say that my definition of Freeride is things like the NWD series, people like Wade Simmons define Freeride for me. But if Freeride recently had to be defined I'd say it's definitey people like the Coastal Crew or Kenny Smith. In my opinion hitting a fairly manicured trail on a DH bike isn't Freeride though, sorry to be a dick but it just had to be said haha.
  • 14 4
I am so tired of these "edits"! Almost every one has the same lame style and its getting super old. I couldnt even finish the vid.

I have no problem with edits, but make them a little original!
  • 14 2
all you people bitching about 8" travel bikes in this vid are hosers! its prolly the only bike these guys have and dont have the quiver all you douche bags think they need. Glad to see people making vids and having fun no matter what and where you ride!

 Not very constructive comment!
I agree they can do what they want with bike!
But buying 3000$ bike with complex setting for only ride polished trail is a little useless, less fun, more hard to ride and expansive!but i totally agree with people how like good equipment...but i don't understand!

idafreerida- The mental gymnastics needed to turn the opinion, "watching DH bikes on manicured trails isn't that exciting to watch" into what you're saying, is mighty impressive.
  • 4 6
 @ scott-townes

I would say by your typical comment, your a mid 30's to early 40's guy trying to hold on to your youth and are trying too still keep up. That's fine but you sound like your compensating for something. My opinion of course, I'm sure your a nice guy and a fair rider.
  • 6 5
RLogan- Yeah bud, that's spot on... haha. The fact that you jump to ridiculous assumptions and insults leads me to believe that you might be compensating for something. I'm secure in where I'm at on my bike because it's FUN to ride and not some contest of who is better than who. Maybe once you venture outside of the Bobsled trail, you'll realize that you hate pointless things much less and hopefully you'll realize that what gets you stoked on riding doesn't get everyone else stoked on riding. I'm sure your a nice guy to be around even though you judge people based on how "good" you think they ride a bike and that's a bit sad.
  • 2 1
Wow, look how long the purely opinionated terminology argument is in here. Why don't we just ask the experts at Cannondale, since they "own" it don't they? Oh I hope they don't sue me for my screen name like Specialized would.
  • 3 0
 Specialized is eveeeeelllll...
  • 3 1
 @ Scott Townes

I Love riding my bike, have since I started racing bmx @ 8. I was just merely expressing my dislike for your overall opinion. Its funny to think that because I only have 3 photos posted you assume I just ride BS. I'm sure you send everything there like a champ.

Where did I ever remark how you ride your bike? I was making a remark at the "local/small world" kid mentality, like a superiority complex. You've got some anger issues... have fun with that mentality.
  • 4 0
I that was I me, all I was saying is that some people can only afford one bike. And if they go off and do some hardcore downhill somewhere else and this is just what they do at there local, you shouldn't be judging them for the bike they use. It's like having a go at someone for riding xc with a full face helmet or something.
  • 1 1
@scott-townes i get ur point in away but i also get Lukas i used to wear a piss pot for DH/FreeRide in my local woods then i wentto mor of a all mountain/ enduro helmet i rode enduro tracks and DH tracks at my local and trail centers. Now i wear full face as im trying more things... EG- bar drags E.T.C i ride a carrera banshee x with halo SAS rims sort of dh/enduro ride really 100mm rear travel and about 140mm on the front, you dont need a singing all dancing bike. if i had the money i would have the devinci (dreambike) at the moment im lookign at SX trails. @lalena i ride dh in a tshirt at my local and trail centers what is the difference between a jersey and a tshirt, a majority of riders roll the sleeves up as they are in the way,
  • 3 0
Rampage is big mountain freeride, this is just plain ol freeride I guess.
  • 37 4
Freeriding = riding with a tshirt?

Trying to define the word or defend its existence seems kind of silly to me. It's called riding your bike and having fun.

Solid edit and riding though. I should get my butt off the shore and come down and check out the riding. Looks like a lot of fun.
  • 7 0
This guys got it. Why are people so obsessive about categorizing things? This just like people and music genres...
  • 1 0
good call, the valley is looking awesome. I liked it, looked like a lot of fun. I am also pretty sure freeride came from motorcross where racers just went and rode for fun, no contests, no rules. I like to call it big boy bmxing myself whatever bike I ride.
  • 15 1
Solid edit and even better riding man!! great to get out with the homies and huck some jumps. don't let these people compare rampage to your video, you guys killed it. keep shredding!
  • 15 1
Preety nice riding, but IMO waaaay too much shots of helmets, faces, tires, suspension and stuff.
"I look so awesome in T-shirt, neckbrace and helmet" Wink It's still a good movie anyway.
  • 1 7
flag vinnycorleone (Dec 7, 2013 at 2:24) (Below Threshold)
(almost) exactly what I was about to say!

But I would have said it without the 'waaay' and with some "!!!" instead of "anyway".
  • 3 2
The riders always had a bored or annoyed look during these shots. Almost like their camera friend wanted to do these and they just wanted to ride.
  • 2 0
 It's still a good movie!!!
  • 10 0
They really were a bunch of laughs on those intro shots
  • 5 0
getting tired of these stereotypical mountain bike edits. it seems like they are trying to make it something its not. why do the riders not smile and just stare off into space? why try to make it so intense? its not even a race video
  • 5 0
Good edit. Music was meh. But you gotta leave the poses and the "look at me" shots to the studs. Only people like Peaty and Zink can pull that look off. You better be riding like a bat out of hell if you're gonna use those kindve shots.
  • 6 1
Some pretty impressive camera movement! Really liked the one corner where you did a smooth off axis tilt. Everything tied together really nice, gave it a distinct feel. And that gap was pretty big. Good stuff!
  • 7 1
Great, really stoked on all the bits focussing on people putting their lids on, or staring into the distance.
  • 3 0
I thought this was very original Smile Ive never seen another vid like this.. From the music, and the way the riders are just staring into space before they ride each section makes it feel like a video game, or that they're not human..something like that anyway!
  • 2 0
Yea, I liked the video style too. I thought it was more of a 1970's police tv show kinda theme. People are totally missing the point of their blank face stares. This is creative "ART" in video form, and they did a good job.
  • 6 2
The number of "epic" shots of you standind next/sitting on your bike and posing for the camera is too damn high Wink
Good riding and cool looking trails though.
  • 6 2
Loved the video! Way too many criticisms from people who have never posted a video to PB. What do you get for it? A bunch of grief from complete strangers!
  • 3 0
 Well spoken mate
  • 2 0
The problem is the epic title 'This is freeride'.. Seems to have maybe mislead some people..
Still.. Looks like a really nice place to ride and I enjoyed the shredding! Doesn't matter to me what bikes you were on or how much travel they have.. But definitely tone down the shots gazing into nowhere Wink
  • 2 0
Yah Valley boys, that is exactly what freeriding is all about and the vid is right on. You guys make it look smooth, and fun. Straight to my favorite pile. Helps when you recognize every stunt and know the trails too, did some sumas and vedder runs last week, love it out there.
  • 3 1
To the people that made the video:

Congrats on making the pinkbike front page. I wish I could some day (It'd pretty much make my life). I'm not going to pretend to be LaRocke or the Collective people, but I want to offer my criticism. That gap that you showed like 20 angles of in the middle was pretty massive, but I think that the multiple angles kind of took away from it.

Like this:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVNoJmJoLiQ

Also, the specialized zoom in at the beginning made me cringe. Pinkbike users are sick of ads. I was ready for something refreshing, but it left a sour feeling because of that damn demo. Know your audience.

The music was too intense. You had 1 big gap, and one steep section that was impressive. The rest of it was easy-going trail with some flow. Be more humble. If you play music like that, you will make people expect big stuff. When there is little big stuff, people will be let down. Its a pretty simple concept (and very hard to put into action).

The filming style was pretty interesting though. Watch those Dudes of Hazzards, and maybe some Travelling Circus and you'll see how to make it more appropriate.

By the way pinkbike, freeride is a lifestyle. Riding a trail like that isn't freeride. I think Freeride requires creativity. Building a trail and then riding it is freeride. Not building a trail and riding straight through the woods/down a mountain side, urban area, is freeride. Seeing new lines on a trail that is normally plain, is freeride (unless you are in a skate park because then being creative becomes uncreative).

Overall, that video was alright. I think that some things took away from the overall potential of the footage.
  • 4 0
Nice vid.....but this is trail riding. Or like we called in my day "mountain biking" Smile
  • 1 0
I agree with the majority. Aside from the big booter this isn't "free ride". But awesome job on the camera work and editing! You really help to show off the quality trails we have here in the valley and using "freeride" in the title will attract more viewers Smile .
For those unfamiliar to the area there are dozens of trails on the locations mentioned that are definitely in the "free riding" category.
  • 1 0
Good video of local trails here in the Fraser Valley. Some great shots but most locals ride these trails just as fast and hit most of the lines on 5 inch trail bikes. Again great video but I feel the DH bikes are just not needed for the riding they are doing.
  • 1 0
Yeah I agree with most people on here, no need for 8" travel on this pretty of a trail. To me freeride with riding whatever, having nothing groomed or lined up. If you watch some of Tippies ancient clips you'll see the true definition of freeride, on a fully rigid!! haha anyways it's was a good video glad you had fun.
  • 1 0
Wow..reading the comments, I thought I got linked to a thread on MTBR. ..very good video..nice camera and riding skills...I'm just glad there wasn't a romantized narrative about bicycles and what they mean to the riders...so many trails, so little time...go ride AND friends, don't let friends ride junk.
  • 1 0
Great vid guys. No matter what we do through our lives, there's always gonna be a tit or two draping their hate all over it! One things for sure they'll always be enough people who are for it, me being one of them.
Looked like you guys we're having fun" Freeride" anytime, anywhere all styles.
  • 2 0
Shot of someone putting on a helmet. Check. Artsy tree shot. Check. Slo-mo shot. Check. Good Video. Check. Stop busting peoples balls over what they name a video. Watch it, enjoy it or turn it off. Merry Christmas.
  • 1 0
Im thinking those trails look familiar. Im glad that you are experimenting with new camera views pans ect. I miss lost Oakleys now there is a free riding trail! To me Free Riding is riding DH with out being in a race. You can get creative side lining and popping off of obstacles. Creating creative ways of shredding down the trail.
  • 4 0
Need to hit up Ledgeview and Sumas sometime, sick trails Smile
  • 2 0
I enjoyed that, good film but it wasn't freeride in my book, just downhill on nice flowy trails.
Perhaps call it "this is cool" and you'll be on to a winner.
