bigquotesWhen people think of Mike Hopkins they're most likely pretty envious of all of the really cool projects he gets to be a part of. I'll be the first to tell you that none of this is because of luck. Mike is the hardest working athlete I've ever known. He's creative, incredibly driven, and the most stubborn human you'll ever meet. He'll drive you crazy, but once you realize it's all for the sake of creating something amazing, you just kind of learn to deal with it. I've been fortunate enough to work with Mike on a number of cool things throughout the years, but most notably - our DreamRide projects. When the idea popped in my head for the first one I couldn't think of anyone better to steer that ship. Mike took a concept and made magic. He is the ultimate dreamer, the ultimate doer, and when he is on board with an idea, will stop at nothing to make sure it's done in the best possible way. I'm forever grateful to call him a colleague, friend, and inspiration. Oh, and be sure to ask him about Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and dinosaurs. He likes that stuff.Lacy Kemp

How ‘Ask Me Anything' Works:

Starting at 9:00 AM PST you can type your questions into the comment box following this article and Mike Hopkins will have a crack at answering them. Sometimes your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a while, as Mike will be busy responding to the flood of questions. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously. To make the process as efficient as possible, try to follow these simple guidelines:

Keep your questions relevant.

Stay focused. Try to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later.

• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words.

Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have a negative issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner.

Use propping to acknowledge good—or not so good—questions. Bump them up or down to where they belong.

Recent advancements in the DNA editing technique CRISPR suggests we might someday be able to make a real life Jurassic Park; filled with actual dinosaurs. What kind of trail should we build through the park? Downhill, enduro, or cross country?
  • 23 1
Hey Mike, when are you going to pop the question to the lovely Traharn? You two would break the internet with that announcement...... Wink
  • 19 1
LOL!!! Killing me bud! You sound like my mom. You'll have to wait and see buddy Wink
  • 3 0
 Fantastic question Lee ????
  • 5 0
yeah mike, make an honest woman out of her Wink
  • 17 2
In honesty, and it's going to sound super cliche', but my nightmare would be, looking back on life and thinking of all the things I should have done. So I am trying to make sure there's nothing left on the table. I try to stay pretty positive, so the nightmares are few and far between eh. Haven't had one in years haha
  • 20 3
Be honest though, the dreams look great, but what do the nightmares look like?

sick edits, mike!
  • 9 1
 the crash roll
  • 14 1
How come you are so handsome and dashing?
  • 13 0
Hahah It's just what I do haha
  • 11 1
No Dino's were hurt in the making of DreamRide. But Secco almost managed to fall off a Frozen waterfall in Alberta. Plenty of close calls on the human front.
  • 8 0
It seems like you're one of the few riders around that has managed to walk the line of staying relevant without necessarily competing all the time, whether in slopestyle, enduro, DH, etc. How'd you manage to make the professional rider thing a reality, and what does it take to keep it going when so much attention seems focused on the competitive sides of the sport?
  • 13 0
I have always looked for the potential in what people aren't doing, instead of what's hot right now. Timing has definitely been on my side. I have always had a passion for creative visuals and the adventure aspects of the outdoors, and with the help of some of my amazing friends I was able to carve my own little spot in the sport. I was never a competiton guy. There has always been a drive to put in the effort to something visual and walk away with an end result that hopefully speaks to your everyday person as much as the mountain bike community. In short, if you feel strongly enough about something, make it happen and do it the best you possibly can. If it makes you happy then don't worry about the critics.
  • 3 0
@hopkins: Rad, I'm always super inspired by guys like you who seem so stoked to be taking the road less traveled, and succeeding at the same time. Shred on Mike.
  • 11 1
Out of all the crew... Who had the worst tantrum throughout the production??...
  • 26 0
I have one piece of advice... don't let Secco get hungry! haha
  • 21 1
 @hopkins: hahahaha whatever dude.
  • 9 0
 @scottsecco: You're a beauty Bud!!!
  • 6 0
Hi Mike, Thank you for your labor and sharing your passion. During the week, I translated quotes from video into Turkish and re-shared with subtitles on my social media pages. Greetings of a Whistler lover rider from Istanbul. Aybars.
  • 3 0
Thanks Man! It's now officially international buddy!
  • 4 0
@hopkins: Life is a dreamride, no boundaries - no language barriers - just pure welcomes. Always welcome to ride here in TR.
  • 1 0
@hopkins: How can I make you ride in northern, germany and ride with you... Crazy idea, but worth it ?
  • 8 2
If you owned Jurassic park which dinosaur would be your trail riding buddy and why? Triceratops, they're the pre-historic version of a man's best friend. And they eat plants, not people.
  • 4 0
Considering you are from the best place on earth (at least in mtb heads), is there any other place that you consider special, that left you something inside and why. And thank you for inspiring us during office hours, you are living a dream, you should be proud & happy ;] Cheerz ????
  • 8 0
NZ is amazing! I had some of the best times hanging with Kelly McGarry, Sammy Hitch, and their Crew of Friends. Put it on the list!
  • 2 0
@hopkins: thank you! Is already on the list ;]
  • 4 0
Mike! Dave here. How ironic I read that you like Jurassic Park and that if you could, you'd film it there. Well, that huge valley we shot above on the rim trail, Jurassic Park was partially filmed there!!!! hd I known i would brought you folks to some of the spots. Question, what was the hardest challenge to overcome when you folks were here on the Big ISland, logistic, culture shock, anything?
  • 7 0
DAAAAAAVE!!!! MY MAN! Well it definitely wasn't culture haha. The hardest challenge is figuring out how to repay you guys for your overwhelming bottomless hosiptaily! You guys are awesome! The biggest logistic with Hawaii was probably the weather buddy. But that is from a clearly film base perspective. You guys live in Paradise homes!
  • 3 0
@hopkins: Hah! No repaying as the experience working with you folks was PRICELESS!!!! Yeah i can see the ever changing weather being a challenge. One hour rain, next sunny, next windy foggy, etc. Good on you and the crew and the amazing video. We'll def cross paths again. Aloha!
  • 3 0
@EvilToad: You know we will buddy! Stoked bud!
  • 6 0
Did @scottsecco really eat that huge burrito in one sitting that I've seen in some photos?
  • 19 0
Yes! There was a picture of this mondo Burrito next to a new born baby and they are like the same size. Secco basically ate a small child!
  • 5 0
@hopkins: Is that why you never let him get hungry?
  • 4 1
Hi Mike, I work more than 12 hours a day and have very little time to ride (I rode once in 2 years). I'm assuming you make your living biking (I don't know your story), if you knew you could help millions of people by working very hard and foregoing your love for biking, would you do it?
  • 4 0
I think there is a balance. If you are helping millions of people I would say you are doing something amazing and you should be proud and motivated by that. You also have to make time to do things just for yourself. A little distance from the everyday grind will re-ignite that drive to get back at it.
  • 1 0
 @Bulls-On-Parade

Do you have kids or something? I work 10-12hrs a day and ride 3-5 times a week, albeit during the winter I resort to night riding...but it's still a blast and with modern LEDs you can haul ass
  • 6 0
Would you ever do a video of you shredding a lower end diamondback bike? That would be awesome.
  • 11 0
@hopkins I think @srsiri23w is onto something here...
  • 10 0
We'll see if we can make that happen for ya ha
  • 6 1
What? Nobody has asked if you ride flats or clips yet? So, uhhh, do you ride flats or clips? Or is it trail dependent? @hopkins
  • 18 0
 Flats all day, everyday!
  • 2 1
 @hopkins: Shimano Saints, perhaps?
  • 7 0
 @Heckler76: RaceFace Atlas
  • 3 0
Will we see a DreamRide3 soon? if so how about shooting bits of it Japan? There're some crazy sceneries going on here.

Also, I wonder what inspires/motivates you when looking for that perfect spot or deciding which picture/shot goes into the video and what gets cut off.
  • 2 0
Japan is definitely on the radar. Ultimately we look for a place where the environment speaks for itself, but we also look at the logistics, like access, weather, light, all these are a factor when you have 4 crew on foot carrying camera gear. It makes life pretty rough if you have a 20km hike before you have even pull out the camera.
  • 1 0
@hopkins: Hey there , send me some requirements we will love to set you up and show you nice spot with minimum hikes , we have 450 km of hills " Cordillera" lenght
  • 3 0
This was the most captivating thing I have watched in a long time. Totally forgot where I was when I was watching it. Amazing vision and creativity that showcased the environments and theme so well. Beautiful job there and what a remarkable tribute to Kelly!!

If you could freeze time right now and focus everything on developing a skill set that doesn't get enough attention, what would it be & why?

Fun question: What ancient relic would you most like to have an 'Indiana Jones' expedition in search of?
Fun Question #2: If you could bring back just one dino, what would it be?
  • 5 0
If I could Freeze time and focus on one thing: Find a way to show people what they are capable of. (deep right)

Fun Question 1: The lost city of Atlantis... they say it's not real, but thats exactly what they want you to think haha
Fun Question 2: Triceratops
  • 2 0
You go on these amazing bike adventures all over the world. From time to time things happen and you are left in a situation you did not plan for. What is your best backcountry fix to be able to countinue on? Have you ever had to get a ridding buddy out of a really scetchy situation due to injury?
  • 4 0
I've definitely been out in some sketchy situations, one where a buddy and I got caught unprepared in a white out snow storm for 15hrs, had to build a shelter to fight off hypothermia. Leatherman bailed us out. You learn from you mistakes and once you're out the other side you have a hell of a story and hopefully all you fingers. I always carry a set of waterproof watches and a couple heli straps in case you need to splint a leg or arm.
  • 5 1
What's the scariest line, maybe not the biggest but scariest for you, that you've pulled off and were you confident you would nail or had doubts?
  • 8 0
The scariest line was probably not my biggest. The last year I did Rampage, I knew it would be my last year, because even though I was super confident, I was legitmately scared and knew that that ship had sailed. It wasn't fun for me anymore. I want to show people how awesome riding is and I felt (from my standpoint) there were more effective ways of doing it. Plus some of the craziest situations I've had on a bike have come on Adventure based trips where you are battling the elements. In those situations it's more about what you know, than how big you go and I dig it!
  • 4 0
Mike Hopkins bike check! What bikes are you riding? Are you involved with any testing for new Diamondback product development?
  • 6 0
I ride the Diamondback Release 3 and it's sick! The new Level Link suspension platfrom has made it my go to bike! I try to help with the development as much as I can, but in all honesty I am way more of a visual, creative guy, and not so much a numbers guy. Porter is the man when it comes to putting bike feel into numbers.
  • 1 0
From Life Cycles to Dream Ride, your work is some of the most memorable and creative! I may have missed a question already asked that is similar, here goes: As an athlete where do get your inspiration for your ideas, and what is your first step in making them a reality? Side note: will you be attending 5 Point Film Fest in Carbondale, CO? Would love to ride with you again!
  • 2 0
 Hey Brian!

I have touched on it before but In short I pick and chose the projects I put energy into. If I feel strongly about a concept or Idea then I don't let anything stand in my way. I just go for it. That being said, I say "I" but really it's a we thing. I have a such a motivated, creative, and committed group of talented individuals that I am lucky enough to share these ideas with and as a whole we make these things happen. There is no way these projects would ever come together without the work of the collective whole. It takes an insane amount of work on everyones part to pull these things off. Inspiration comes from everywhere though. Scotty Carlson at Juicy Studios is the main guy I bounce Ideas off and him and I have a way of building some really outlandish projects. It's a team thing!
  • 1 0
@hopkins: Appreciate the insight, thanks for keeping the stoke level high. Have a great spring and Ride On!
  • 1 0
@brianbuell: Thanks Brian, keep'r rubber side down eh
  • 3 0
Is that one part in dreamride 2 filmed in the drainage coming out of Greeley at the ski hill in Revelstoke? It sure looks like it!
  • 2 0
 It sure is!
  • 3 2
nice edit, steezy ride, but how do you manage growing up? at ages like 15 20 you don´t get afraid of anything, sometimes growing up means get more carefully, does it influenced your riding???? @hopkins
I mean, on season we saw you flying a giant lip, now we see you trail riding but with lots of style!
Nice edit!!!!
  • 9 0
My perspective has changed over the years for sure. There were my Rampage years, where I was just trying to prove to myself that I could hang with the fellas, but Ultimately I hardly ever rode like that. I have always been creatively focused and I saw more potential, not to mention longevity in riding the flowing trails that didn't scare the sh#t out of me. At the end of the day I just wanted to show my version of fun, and it wasn't hucking booters in the desert. It might be an age thing, and I totally respect those guys. They're the tip of the sword. It's just not my jam anymore.
  • 2 0
Always had this doubt, did you actually landed that hip in Fernie while filming for Life Cycles??

Still got the photo of that jump in my facebook... that was an incredible jump!!
  • 5 0
I wouldn't be walking if I hadn't landed it haha
  • 1 0
There's a common theme here that you enjoy the creative side of the sport vs competition. How much did you rely on connections (friends, filmmakers etc.) vs racing or competitions to get your name out there and get to where you are today?
  • 2 0
From Day 1. I knew after my first competition that I didn't want to go the competition route. I was fortunate to meet Derek Frankowski just as we were both starting out. Him and I teamed up and never looked back. I have managed to forge some of the best friendships and working relationships with very talented guys. We found our common ground in work ethic. Like training for competition, we bust our asses to make sure shots are the best we can make them.
  • 3 0
If you could only ride one trail or trail network for the rest of your life what would it be?
  • 3 0
Hmmm tough one. I feel like if it came down to that It wouldn't be much different than working in an office. Not ideal for attention spans like mine haha
  • 2 0
@hopkins: Fair enough! That was an awesome video by the way! The winter riding had me on the edge of my seat, snow burns are no fun!
  • 3 0
Out of all the riding locations in the film, which was your favourite? Is it all as fun as it looks?
  • 2 1
Seriously though how creepy was it riding into that cave with limited light? Much props to you the rider and the film crew for producing some of the best pics ive seen lately!
  • 2 0
It was super strange, creepy and awesome. I mean it was a bit of a mission to get in there, had to loosen the stem and turn the bars sideways to squeeze through the entrance with the bike, and then once you're in there we kept having this feeling that the roof was going to drop on our heads because the floor is riddled with debris... good times haha. Anything for the shot haha.
  • 5 1
Seriously, where is this magical door?
  • 10 0
 In your head bro haha
  • 3 0
 @hopkins: haha!! True that!
  • 2 0
what things would you never head into the backcountry without? been a fan of your riding and adventures for a good few years now and it's super inspiring stuff, so thank you.
  • 1 0
The obvious bike essentials, plus a headlamp, extra layers, and a leatherman. Leatherman is crucial
  • 1 0
what special things did you have to do to prepare for patagonia? Asking because its always been a place of interest to me. thanks for sharing your adventure it looked amazing!
  • 16 1
I think you are looking for the one they call Mr.Hunter haha
  • 3 0
@hopkins: man do I feel dumb I guess I cant multi task!!! If it helps I did like your video style and riding style! I have seen you at rampage and I really respect/appreciate seeing your projects and places. its a nice change from just seeing people that only race. I like your take on riding! thanks for being a MTB Ambassador! Sorry again! I will now cry into the keyboard
  • 2 0
This is the most inspiring piece of video I have ever seen in my entire life. Thank you for bringing me back to what I love about this sport.

I think you are a great writer and should do more of it. Do you enjoy writing? Have you considered starting a regular column / piece on pinkbike?
  • 4 0
Thanks man! I like writing when I don't have a deadline. Once I have that hanging over my head then it takes the fun out of it. I like to do the odd article, but if I had to consistently produce a column I can only see it going right sideways haha
  • 4 0
Thanks For all the Support Pinkbike! See you on the Trails eh!
  • 2 0
Hi, Ive heard you've been entering some fell races???? Any good??? Great film by the way!! Smile

What is your favourite Black Sabbath album?

And is there LOAM on the other side? We must know...

The skiing is crap today, can we just meet at Clancey's and do Q&A over coffee's?
  • 3 0

Dream ride or walking with your hand through a field of wheat?
  • 1 0
hi mike after been in the mountain biking game for so long witch is the best place you have riden and had the most enjoy ment and best memories from ?
  • 2 0
BC and NZ... hard to beat those two!
  • 1 0
I don't think anyone else has asked this.
How hard was it for you to be a pro in two action sports and did you ever have any times when you schedule conflicted?
  • 2 0
It was awesome! but yeah, very hard. That's why I stepped back from skiing. I felt that my efforts were getting too divided, so I chose to focus on one. Put all my efforts into doing MTB to the best of my ability, and keep skiing as something fun I did with my friends.
  • 1 0
If you were a pizza what kind of pizza would you be? Also, what do you think is the most underrated riding destination in the world? These questions can be related
  • 1 0
Mike, I recognize the snow gulley scene from Revelstoke Mountain Resort... ripper chair. I actually saw you guys filming it a a month or two ago. Sweet!
  • 1 0
How long did it took to shoot this short? Really talented crew and nice concept..
  • 3 0
It took, about a month and a half of pre-production, and 2 months to film and do post production.
  • 1 0
How does a rider completely off the radar get a sponsor, or become an ambassador for the sport?
  • 1 0
Do you feel that skiing has helped you scout out more inventive lines and helped with your signature style at all
  • 1 0
Amazing dream ride Mike, looking forward to watching it in Nicaragua, any idea when you can be there?
  • 3 2
They usually involve getting chased by a Velociraptor. Jurassic park had a lasting effect on my childhood haha
  • 2 1
What would be the most awesome question to ask you when your "ask me anything" segment opens??
  • 2 1
That video was something amazing to watch, props man. My question is this, what inspired you to become a mountain biker?
  • 7 0
I grew up in a small mountain town called Rossland and it has a massive bike culture. So you could say I was a product of the environment, plus I followed my Dad and older brother everywhere and they were both super into it. So Naturally little bro wants to be better than Big Bro. The battle still rages!
  • 2 1
I just got back from the big island and didn't think there was any mtbking there?!?! You found some secret stashes?!?
  • 6 0
We definitely found a few hidden gems thanks to are buddies Dave and Jason. They are locals in Hilo and they showed us the goods. Us Haole's would have been pretty hard pressed to make this thing what it is without those guys. Locals know best.
  • 1 0
Do you still ski ? if yes do you find it hard to make the transition each year between the 2 sports ? Cheers
  • 1 0
With the DB edits being very well received. Any plans for a full length film?
  • 4 0
We do have plans to do something really special with this entire DreamRide Series. But with that said it all comes down to budget. At the moment we're just taking it one step at a time. If we can make it happen you know we will haha... I'll keep you guessing.
  • 1 0
what have you got planed for your next video because the first ones are out of this world
  • 2 0
We've got a couple things up are sleeves. Potentially another one in this Vein and then we have a couple multi-sport concepts we want to tackle. So many ideas, so little time!
  • 1 0
Whats your go to pre ride pump up video/song? Also, what food do you always take when you go on long rides?
  • 1 0
Dried Mango's. You want an energy kick/treat deep into a big day, then mango's are my go to. Staples like trail mix, Clif Bars, and apple... you know food.
  • 1 0
Hello. Did you ski this year and if so did you crank a daffy and if so is there a pic?
  • 2 0
This is definitely going to the to do list for this week. Double Dafy sequence...?
  • 1 0
I think you're a great writer. Do you enjoy writing and have you ever considered a regular column / piece on pinkbike?
  • 3 0
Deadlines are the bain of my existence haha. I like writing one off pieces, where I have time to articulate a story. I feel if I had to do something every week, it would A) not be super fun for me B) I think it would go right sideways at some pointi haha
  • 1 0
Dood! Brilliant edit, was the frozen lake ride up behind Canmore? Looks a bit like that valley behind Three Sisters.
  • 3 0
It was Abraham Lake up towards Rocky Mountain House.
  • 1 0
@hopkins: Thanks I know that area, very nice!
  • 1 0
Out of everywhere you have traveled in the world, what is your most favorite beverage?
  • 6 0
 Water.
  • 1 0
Why are people so hung up on the Dreamride II locations, especially the specific Hawaiian island?
  • 1 0
When did you start riding and how long have you been sponsored by diamondback?
  • 5 0
I started when I was like 6 or 7, My brother and I would bomb around the woods on our push brake bikes. I grew up around bikes, so I feel pretty lucky that I get to call it a career. I've been with DB for 3 years now and it's been awesome. There are so few companies out there that are willing to stray from the standard marketing approach, but DB is not one of them. They have supported our ideas from day one and enabled us to produce films with a different perspective. I couldn't be more stoked!
  • 1 0
When will Diamond Back bring back the Diamond Back Gusset like on the Harry Leary Turbo?
  • 1 0
mike do you see your self staying with diamondback for the rest of your career or will you change at all
  • 2 0
I will stay as long as they'll have me.
  • 1 0
Don't know if this has been asked yet but how did you come up with the idea of this edit?
  • 1 0
Thank you for such a great edit and please make the third instalment happen. Cheers MIke
  • 2 0

Scariest moment from your trip with SMITH in NZ...?

3 !!!!
  • 3 0
Being in the back seat of the RV as Lars and Joey made the RV-RV sunglass pass going 100! haha Move of the trip for sure!
  • 1 0
What was the first real mountain bike you owned?
  • 1 0
Specialized Ground Control... talk about dating myself haha. A white and black beauty I ended up snapping in two airing off things I had no business jumping off... kids being kids eh
  • 3 2
Were any dinosaurs hurt in the filming of Dreamride?
  • 2 1
Do you still ski a bunch or are you more focused on biking these days?
  • 2 0
I still love skiing, but it's definitely taken a back seat to MTB. I recently got outfitted by the fine folks at Salomon as I have a few Ski projects I would like to see come to life. My main focus and passion these days is definitely two wheels though. I see so much potential when it comes to creativity in both sports. Skiing definitely influences my approach to riding.
  • 1 0
Where is your favorite region in the world to ride?
  • 3 0
I've learned through all my travels that there is nowhere better than BC! Although NZ is a close second!
  • 1 0
What made you decide to wear shorts in the snow?
  • 5 0
It's all about continuity. It wouldn't feel like one continuous ride if the kit kept changing, so for the sake of film I bite the bullet and took on the cold. We hit a low temp of -20 on the frozen lake. Too close to frostbite!
