The iconic Top of the World Stage in Whistler

2019's EWS series looks to be another banger with the addition of several new venues and a standalone Trophy of Nations race at the end of the year. Read on to find out more about each venue and when you can expect the EWS circus to roll into town.

Round One - Rotorua, New Zealand
First up is a trip down under to the incredible trails of Rotorua, New Zealand. This North Island venue has proved a real hit with riders from across the globe, with many now travelling to the iconic trails of the Whakarewarewa Forest outside of racing for their off-season training. With a huge and ever-growing mountain biking community in Rotorua, it’s little wonder the series decided to come back for the third time.

bigquotesWe’ve been working to announce the 2019 calendar much earlier this year to allow the local organisers, riders and fans more time to prepare. We couldn’t be more excited to be heading back to Rotorua – the trails are world class and the local riders, and community in general, always offer us such a warm Kiwi welcome.Chris Ball, Managing Director, Enduro World Series

Round Two - Derby, Tasmania, Australia
The EWS is heading back to Derby, Tasmania for round two of the 2019 season. This small town in the North East of Tasmania will once more put on a big show when the series heads back to this rider favourite on March 30, 2019. The venue blew everyone away when the series made its debut in 2017 – even picking up the Specialized Trail of the Year Award for Detonate Trail.

bigquotesWe are so excited to be able to bring Shimano Enduro Tasmania back to Derby. 2017 was such a roller coaster, we can not wait to make 2019 the whole theme park. Derby is continuing to grow at an astounding rate both in town and on the trails, it really is a mountain biking destination worthy of the EWS.Ian Harwood, Race Director, EMS Australia

Round Three - Madeira, Portugal
The third round of next year’s Enduro World Series (EWS) will be heading to the island paradise of Madeira on May 11, 2019.

This tiny island in the Atlantic ocean made its EWS debut in 2017 and offered up incredible trails thanks to the dedicated work of the hosts Freeride Madeira. The diverse, technical trails proved a big hit with riders from around the world and provided a suitably dramatic backdrop for some tight and intense racing.

bigquotesWe are super stoked to welcome the Enduro World Series again in Madeira! The race in 2017 was a life changing experience for all of us and it really helped to push the sport and allowed the biking community to grow in multiple directions. We did our absolute best to give riders a variety of trails, terrains and landscapes – making it an adventure from start to finish. That’s what riding and racing is all about and that’s what the Enduro World Series stands for. What an honour to welcome the best riders on the planet to the Pearl of the Atlantic once again!Freeride Madeira, Race Organisers

Round Four - Canazei, Italy
Round four will head to a brand new venue: Canazei in Italy. This small village high in the Dolomites will make its EWS debut on the weekend of June 29th next year. Riders can expect long Alpine stages, featuring a mixture of natural and man made singletrack. Hosted by the amazing Superenduro team, we think riders are going to love this new location.

bigquotesThere’s no doubt that the Dolomites are a famous destination worldwide, but there’s way more to discover for a mountain biker then the landscape you can see on Panoramio. The local community has been working hard in the last years to recuperate old trails in the surrounding valleys, rich with culture, history, food and unique nature and it’s ready to open the doors of unrevealed trails for the EWS riders. Since I first visited here with my bike I fell in love with this place.Enrico Guala, Superenduro

Round Five - Les Orres, France
There's another brand new venue for round five, Les Orres in France. This ski resort in the Hautes-Alpes region of South Eastern France will offer up a classic slice of French style enduro; big Alpine descents, long stages and the odd chairlift ride to get to the top of those big mountain stages.

bigquotesThe race in Les Orres will offer ideal height differences (2600m to 800m) and a diversity of spots to the riders. You can expect beautiful single track with technical corners and a lot of speed, through the “mélèzes” forest. The starting point will be at the top of the slopes, at 2600m, surrounded by a breathtaking 360° view and a panorama over the Serre-Ponçon lake. Les Orres is honoured to host the EWS competition and to welcome top-level athletes from all around the world. This is the result of the endeavour and of investments over the past few years to make Les Orres the mountain biking destination in France.Julie Rogissard, Les Orres Tourism Office

Round Six - Whistler, Canada
If ever there was a venue that didn’t need an introduction, it’s the inimitable Whistler, arguably the planet’s most iconic riding destination. So it will come as no surprise to learn that the Enduro World Series (EWS) will return there for round six of the 2019 season in conjunction with Crankworx. This stalwart of the series has featured in every EWS season to date, and with good reason. The variety of terrain and trails Whistler can serve up in a single day’s racing always makes for one of the most dramatic events of the year.

bigquotesWe are honoured to be included amongst a list of such incredible riding destinations. We’re looking forward to welcoming the athletes back to Whistler and seeing some of the best riders in the world hitting up our trails.Darren Kinnaird, Crankworx General Manager

Round Seven - Northstar, California
Northstar, California is nestled high in the mountains above the iconic Lake Tahoe will offer athletes a taste of classic Northern California riding, arguably the birthplace of mountain biking. Hosted by the California Enduro Series, round seven is bound to be a hit with riders and fans alike.

bigquotesWe are excited to bring an Enduro World Series round to California – it’s been great working with Northstar and EWS to make this happen. The setup couldn’t be better — hosting an EWS North American Continental Enduro Series event in 2018, leading us into the Enduro World Series for 2019. We look forward to introducing some technical, rocky, loose California gnar to the Enduro World Series”Steven Gemelos, California Enduro Series

Round Eight - Zermatt, Switzerland
The eighth and final round of the 2019 Enduro World Series will take place in Zermatt, Switzerland. It’s the first time the series has crowned its World Champions somewhere other than Finale Ligure in Italy – and where better than in the shadow of one of Europe’s most famous mountains, the Matterhorn? With a growing reputation for it’s expanding trail network and flanked by incredible mountain scenery, Zermatt is the perfect location for this historic race.

bigquotesWe feel super honoured to host the final round of the EWS 2019 here in Zermatt. It’s incredible to see the enduro community growing all around the globe. The goal is to provide the core elements of our sport: epic landscapes, endless trails, challenging experiences and unforgettable company within an international vibe in the middle of the Swiss Alps. See you in 2019!Adrian Grenier of the Traillove Festival

Trophy Of Nations - Finale, Italy
Taking place on the iconic trails of Finale in September 2019, the Trophy of Nations will be a true celebration of cycling as riders cast aside individual glory in favour of teamwork and national pride. Teamwork, strategy and sportsmanship will be pushed to the limit as riders have to work together in teams of three to race for a combined result. Read more about the Trophy des Nations here.

Happened just after Tasmania became a country.

Is it still recognized as a colony of Portugal over yonder? I've somewhat consistently seen it recognized as its own place.
  • 1 0
@kmg0: Much like the american kingdom of Hawaii, or the rebellious colony of Cuba
  • 1 0
@kmg0: It was never a colony. Desert island occupied by us.

 @diogoa: Ahh! History lessons =]

Now if only California could get recognized as it's own country...

Hopefully Northstar puts together some quality runs instead of the usual "green" XC trails/fireroads that are used for the local enduros..

hopefully we get some new trails!

Coaster was acceptable, Tahoe Trail and EZ going was just plain silly!

Shaun Palmer will host the after party, not partake, but encourage everyone to get destroyed. He'll be like the girl's uncle at our high school graduation party who gave me Crown Royal, let me pass out, woke me up for more, found me passed in the bed of my truck when it started raining and got me to move into the bed of a truck with a camper shell and pass out with 3 others.

One can only dream of being good enough or decide to put in the hours to get to a level to be challenging for top spot at the EWS whether it be pro or masters category. I suppose we weekend warriors are riding vicariously through you a bit here and one cannot help but wish you all the best and hope you have pinned runs all the way.

Logistics wise, wouldn't be easier to bring folks from Australia/New Zealand to South America (if it had stages which it doesnt) then to North America, then to Europe to finish out the series? Or is it more an issue of trying to push back Whistler/Northstar to avoid snow in late spring?
  • 1 0
@PHeller Logistics wise is that the EWS is set up for the well look after seasoned vet riders and not some young fast penniless racer! Most of these venues are once in a life time trips for a normal tourist!
  • 5 1
Is that Rachel Atherton in the photo at the top? Bit random if it is. Maybe a clue?
  • 6 0
Rachel Atherton rode the top of the world stage in Whistler and gave a comparison of that style of trail to a DH world cup track and to demonstrate how amazing the enduro racers are. I doubt she will be getting into the EWS this year as she is already super busy with her DH

Derby, Tasmania? Looks like it's finally segregated from Australia!
  • 1 0
How ironic as, IIRC, there actually is a secession movement within Tasmania.
  • 2 0
@Verbl-Kint: If you define a handful of nutjobs as a 'movement', then yes.
  • 3 0
I'd like to see Iceland on the tour. Lets see the bad ass bikers drop in on a glacier
  • 4 0
 No Chile? Uuuuuhhhh...
  • 3 0
When is coverage going to become more watchable like DH WC?
  • 4 0
When the courses are less than 10km but these stages can be massive and they do several stages a day so realistically they will never be able to cover enough of them to make it like the DH WC so you gotta watch helmet cams and see the photo epics and other coverage
  • 1 0
@Lookinforit: Yeah I understand what you are saying, but maybe drone coverage along with cameras in certain action points along the trail by a bigger network/ redbull tv might be feasible even if it is edified and time compressed into a show for the following day to show the previous days action.
  • 1 0
@Lookinforit: If they could get the live streaming gopros to work over 10km you could have an awesome spectator tv.

we had WC PMB , and XC WC this March , please have EWS by us in [Cape Town]

  • 3 0

  • 1 0
@clemson: damn I should read more precisely
  • 1 1
 No Finale Ligure in 2019??
  • 4 0
Read. It's the last event. The "world champs" if you will.
  • 2 0
last event - nations cup. not world champs..world team champs... interesting format 3 person teams from each nation racing for glory as a team.
