To be honest, I really feel like this just supports the (incorrect) image of our sport as a bunch of macho, misogynist, adrenaline junkies. Maybe I'm overreacting, but a bunch of maxim trophy hotties don't seem to belong in a sport that is really just about having fun on a bike; I feel like this type of image just pushes away a lot of potential mountain bikers out there. (Not that I don't like a maxim babe or two)
This is a stupid video. Really shows the target audience of PB, largely a bunch of little boys. Time to grow up. Also, who the hell uses the word "bitches" in 2012?
Hot women are a necessity for a sport to become mainstream
Look at cheerleaders in NFL or the racing girls in Moto GP and F1.
The general public isn't the hardcore riders like us.
@ogopogo , I wouldn't sweat it to much..it fits the rampage image quite well i figure.. N.W.D has always had a reckless bad boy persona .. Just like LifeCycles belongs in a film festival.. I think the goal is to have variety, to get all types of people into the sport.. I thought the effort was cute..
@encorp The video wasn't aimed specifically at the PB audience it was made for Maxim TV or Maxim.com and PB have just shared it as they do with many other clips involving mountain biking eg. The Claw on The Today Show and Pilgrim on Take Me Out. Those two definately weren't aimed at the average PB user.
You guys all need to just relax a little bit, I was expecting something ridiculous after reading your comments. I have no idea who would be pushed away from mountain biking by this video, probably people who take themselves far too seriously, which probably isn't a bad thing...
Its just a light hearted look at rampage, certainly nothing to get your brake lever caught in your shorts about.
I think the only ones allowed to be pissed are the rest of the athletes who saw Andreu take exclusive hold of her apparently. I thought it'd have been just a promo stunt by Maxim (not so sure what do they have on MTB, but that's stuff for another day), but from the photos and this video looks like she was Lacon exclusive.
PinkBike double standards again. One minute Ian Hylands is having sissy fits over women being portrayed in a sexist manner and then this shite. What a load of bollox this site is becoming.
Dude, we are guys. I'm sorry, but if you don't want to see hot chicks, or be an adrenaline junkie, go ride a fixie with some butch ugly hipster chicks. I mean seriously, some guys complaining about boobage, and the "looks on our sport". Hate to say it to the original poster but he rides this : www.pinkbike.com/photo/7060540 basically, nothing to do with DH or manliness. Give me some strippers, a long travel dh rig, some gnar kill rock gardens steep as hell, a truck bed of booze, and we have a party. I'm sorry, but if you don't agree, you aren't a DHiller. Have you seen some of the parties the WC DHllers holds each race? Boose, bitches, bikes, boobies. Nuf said. I swear, the day that DH turns into a metrosexual hipster crapride like fixies with "FADSTERS" who do it because it's popular, is the day DH is officially dead. DH has always been filled with manly men, who like BOOBIES. f*ck image, DH and Freeride was NEVER ABOUT IMAGE!!!!!!!!! It was about tattoos, bikes, injuries, boobies, booze, and doing shit that everyone else said they would never follow or respect. Basically all the comments saying omg this is bad for our image... I'm sorry but this reminds me of mtb in the early 90's to early 2k's. Pansy filled xc racers that were jealous the DH riders were stealing their wives. Grow some bollocks and man up.
Little boys? Considering "Maxim" magazine is the most heavily read magazine by people under 50 asides from playboy and a few others, I'm sure it's nothing to do with "little boys". Get off your high horse. Your 30, you were still in diapers when some of us were shredding on our bikes.
I have to agree with billy-bike-club NWD was all about hot chicks and being "dudes" I don't see how this is different then any other sport out there, just watch ESPN all the reporters are "hot chicks" and definitely right in line with all the other alternative action sports... The video was kind of lame but exposure like this and Darren's interview are only going to help the sport grow and become more accessible and I see that as a good thing.
To clarify two things: 1. I also ride a stinky, and love DH just as I love all types of mountain biking. 2. I don't have any problem with NWD and that part of the sport, its unique and an integral to mountain biking, but, it isn't the only part of the sport.
What I'm saying is that this is the wrong type of video for millions of average people to see. One of the biggest troubles we have is making trails accesible, and sorry, but a corny maxim girl pathetically raking some dust at rampage is not going to make a lot of people say, "Hey, those mountain bikers really deserve some public support for them and their trails." What we really need is the type of attention (i.e. Bearclaw) that will make people want to a.) start riding, or b.) just give us a little more consideration instead of waving us off as idiots while they tear trails down and don't let us ride.
I'm not attacking our sport at all, I just don't like the way it's being publicized.
I was prepared to be seriously offended based on all the discussion I saw. But when I watched the video I saw a girl who was wearing more clothes than an NFL cheerleader and who was trying to be interested in biking. Get some new grips people.
P.S. You should watch the second video if you were offended by the first one...
Can't we all just say this was "super lame" instead of turning pinkbike into one big Feminist Tumblr blog. Crips, people will get offended over anything nowadays.
Yeah... Little bit of an overreaction on your part, guys... Yes. It was lame. She didn't hit that -- I have a slight inkling that it may have been staged (just a little bit? Girl was wearing toms). She's a hot girl. She's also not bright enough to come up with entire sentences, so the RedBull producers wrote lines for her to recite. WHO CARES?!? Does this cheapen my rides? Does this mean, as a woman, I have to posess huge 'cans' and never dig again unless it's in trendy rolled-up jeans and a booby tank? Does this mean my bike is any less fun? F*ck no, it doesn't... Not one goddamn iota. As a woman, I feel embarrassed for her. As a human being, I feel embarrassed for her parents. However, ya gotta put food on the table, right?
So stop whining -- either watch it or don't, but don't tune in about how you, as a dude, feel that women are being objectified; no one cares what you have to say about that subject because... guess what? You aren't a woman. So can it already. If we feel objectified, believe me: we'll let you know.
'Cheapen the sport'? Oh, please. That's like the argument that gay marriage threatens the sanctity of a heterosexual marriage.
If this video makes you less likely to enjoy riding your bike, maybe you don't belong on the bike in the first place. Stop letting outside factors determine the way you feel... Because that's what ACTUALLY cheapens our sport.
It wont make me enjoy cycling any less because the garbage that it is, has already been forgotten. The riders are pro athletes and for this trashy video to be made just tries to make it all look silly and insignificant. The riders are pushing the limits of the sport, true trail blazers. Some peroxide surgical experiment does not help do it justice
Yes, because downhilling and free riding, as sports, are soooo far above trashy videos and pro hoes? It's a lame attempt at humor, not a final summary of 'cycling' as a whole. Ha ha ha ha. Dude. It's a video. Relax. It doesn't cheapen the sport, it's just another look at it.
fair enough man, I'm not wound up over it just thought that such a televised event could have been portrayed with a bit of a better, more professional image to newcomers and outsiders looking into the sport. I would smash that without doubt too
I totally agree... Which it was. It's going mainstream here in the US on Saturday with NBC's coverage of the RedBull signature sessions, and I'm sure all of that will be professional, mostly hoe-free coverage of how these guys are pushing and changing mountain biking and adrenaline sports as a whole... Which is a HUGE deal and should be shown a lot of respect and covered with a bit of reverence.
i rode in a van out to the rampage sight with her and she was closest to the door when we stopped, there was this moment of silence every one was waiting for her to open the door and she was like iv never opened a door like this, it was a handle not that hard but hey shes a maxim girl so she doesn't have to open doors i guess lol
Agreed... she's kinda fugly IMO. I can't stand fake blonds (blonds in general are just not hot) with spray tans personaly. This chick is just another marketing ploy for young boys, and a pretty "meh" one at that.
I can't beleive so many people feel they were " "FORCED" " in to watching this, i'd love to see your coments when you are " "FORCED" " into watching RedTube videos. If you don't like girls and prefer guys then, was the word 'hottie' and the picture of a chick not a give away not to watch the vid!! Watch something else. I like girls, bikes and this video.
When mainstream media gets involved, this is the outcome. Sometimes it's like this. Look at the TV coverage of Lucas Oil outdoor motocross. Fuel had Jeff Emig, motocross guy in booth. NBC had Jamie Beswick, a bmxer. Jamie's great, but how can you compare 2 different sports? Erin Bates is knowledgable AND hot (boobs bigger than bubba's head), but never appeared on NBC as the pit reporter. The first years of the xgames had some goofy stuff, including some goofy "sports". Did anyone see the mountain bike events? Summer: Slalom downhill with embarassing wooden structures. Winter: Mass downhill on icy ski hills. Crashing was a major component. Corporations look at graphs and charts and think this needs to be done to appeal to all groups to get ratings. If actual DH racing ended up on TV, I doubt Mr Rob, one of best play-by-play guys ever, would get to call the races for the masses, because he's not what the "people" would like or understand.
And, I don't think many people remember this, but Mountain Biking had a weekly national outlet. It was on NBC in the early 90's. The host sucked. The coverage was weak. Crappy music. 5 minutes of race coverage. Hans Rey always had a segment. Nothing against Hans, he's a skilled travelled rider. Anybody that really rode wanted to be as far from that image as possible. "I saw a guy on tv bouncing on a picnic table. Do you do that?" Just wait, "I saw a guy jumping off a cliff. Do you do that?" It's coming, Dec 10th, tell your co-workers you're going for a ride... It is coverage, but it always seems to come at a price.
Well im sure the Atherton boys would like this kind of thing at events. As for the serious, non-narcissist riders... Not so much? I think it's a stupid attempt to mainstream mountain biking. I for one am definitely not a fan.
Wtf are you talking about? How's Gee (because I'm going to think you're talking purely about Gee and not hard-working-as-f*ck-no-nonsense Dan or hi-been-injured--the-best-of-3-years-let-me-dominate-the-field Rachel) any less serious than any of the other riders at Rampage and such a narcissist?
Plus, since we're at it, I very much doubt any of your serious guys (against which, unlike you, I have no blatant and uncalled for prejudices) minded a hot girl hanging around. Maybe their girlfriends did, don't think they did.
Its always like this. in the beginning we all complain that nobody gives a shit about our sport and that we deserve to get more attention. Then a bunch of big companies get involved, they bring in more money, more coverage, more opportunities... and everyone starts crying because "their sport has become too mainstream".
Fake tits and dye jobs... what's so hot about this silly bint??? I see nthing attractive about her, in fact I bet if you take all the make-up off and the hair entensions out shes even more butt ugly. Way to play into the typical "Xtreme sports" bullshit.
haha andreu is my 2nd favorite rider! he is hella funny too! "told you no to touch the brakes!" "well welcome to Rampage!" and his accents just makes it that much better
Thank you. I completely agree -- if anything, they could have at least not edited in footage of a stunt man (woman?) hitting that. Hot girl inanely blabbering about a sport and supposedly 'digging'? Lame. Hot girl blabbering, pretend digging and fake dropping a massive hit? Super lame. Gag.
good and funny video, it'll be cool to have some maxim girls helping in some trail build days fo sho. for all the haters go back to you all's caverns and stay there.
Hahaha, I think Lacondeguy rules, whilst other riders had like a huge building team, he just worked on with probably the hottest girl around. Anybody that doesnt dig that is freakin nuts, hahaha
It had to be lacondeguy!
I bet he had to do more work on the trail to clean up her fuckups. Pretty women have a place in the world, and not being sexist, but that place is anywhere but Rampage.
i dont understand...
You do realize that booze bitches and boobies applies to golfing too... And like 99% of the other sports.
Drop your little equality bandwagon; she's there because she wants to be and she earns a lot more than you do.
Ps: guys just call hot girls sluts because they sleep with anyone but you.

EDIT : well the related video after made up for that ^^
