The 2023 Pinkbike Video of the Year is... Roadkills by Ride Or Die

"Roadkills" A Film By Ride Or Die

bigquotesJoin us on our two-week mission as we zigzag across British Columbia, Canada in our new company vehicle that we scored from Facebook Marketplace. We catch up with some of our best friends and shred a few of B.C.s finest locations, toss some barspins, crush some beers, and create memories that will keep us laughing for years to come. So grab some popcorn and get ready to join us on the best trip of our lives.Ride Or Die

Why it's the winner.
In a world full of short form video content it is rare to come across something that you can really sink into. Roadkills pays homage to the bygone era of movie segments and takes us on tour to some of British Columbia's best riding locations. The mixture of cinematic footage and dadcam moments give the video a professional, yet laid back vibe. Good friends, good trails, good times. What more do you need?

Runner Up: Flip The Switch - Georgia Astle

Pinkbike Readers Choice: In The Know - Caleb Holonko

So sick. It was nominated in 2022, but was beaten out by Brage Vestavik's insane Sound of Speed. www.pinkbike.com/news/2022-pinkbike-awards-video-of-the-year-winner.html

 nevermind.

 We need more Frix Frix
  • 3 0
i still watch this every couple of weeks. the only problem with that video is it makes me think i look that good while riding, which is definitely not true

“When Does The Trend End?” Shoulda been somewhere on the list
  • 3 0
 Yes to this
  • 2 0
There is something that transcends me about the way this film was light referenced here... is that the criticism of industry? Personal? Not fans of the soundtrack?

“When Does The Trend End?” got very robbed
  • 5 0
When does the trend end was easy best movie of the year but I would say my way or my war should be runners up
  • 5 1
Sick but it’s the most trendy thing going right now. It’s just the same thing on the same jump at the same place the last 10 years people have been doing the same thing.
  • 8 2
Idk.. the whole intro of that video just felt like they were saying "We are cool, everyone else is cheap entertainment."...
Just make cool sh*t that we like to watch, you don't need to push literally everyone else down to make yourself look better.
  • 3 0
@ausnola: I think that’s valid. I also think that their goal was to show how much effort they think should be put into modern mtb videos. “When does the trend end?” Obviously took some prolonged effort from some guys who are passionate about the content they’re creating. They definitely have the opinion that edits should be more of a passion project and less of a beat the algorithm and make an advertisement. Weather this is the way the mtb “community” wants the content game to evolve; I am definitely here for more video parts like these

Well deserved, Caleb. One wild video from start to end.
  • 17 3
 Caleb is the people’s champ.
That’s all that really matters.
Unbelievable job Caleb and crew!
  • 15 2
WHEN DOES THE TREND END?? Just because you got called out pb doesnt mean it didnt deserve at least a spot on the list!
  • 8 3
I watched it and enjoyed it. Genuinely did I miss us getting called out somewhere? We have to have a pretty thick skin, I promise it wouldn't have swayed us if we did.
  • 1 1
@brianpark: Why wasn't it included on the list?
  • 5 1
@ads10: there were a ton of great videos last year that didn't make the list. Not going to give specifics on this one, anything I say will get misinterpreted as criticism of the piece—it's great, glad they did it, we'd have run it homepage if we'd seen it in time and probably called it a must watch, we're following along what they do in the future.
  • 10 0
Flip the Switch was my favorite. It covers terrain that I would actually enjoy riding for the most part and did not involve a bunch of crazy man made jumps.
  • 14 2
Atmospheric River Rats 2 should get some credit!
  • 6 0
Loved the first one. Not a big fan of the second one though.
  • 14 1
@Muscovir: as the co-creator/conceiver of ARR and ARR2 I honestly agree with you. ARR will always be something I’m incredibly proud of. ARR2 not as much. Obviously still major props to everyone involved but I think there was a bit more ego and bro energy and it drifted away from my original vision of the first movie. Plus I was sidetracked by bikepacking the EDR rounds in Tasmania and then went through a break up, both certainly took some of my focus away and as a result I think ARR2 suffered. But that’s what happens with a community driven edit. Once the first movie had some “clout” it started to attract a different energy in the sequel.
  • 4 0
@JankComponent: Dude! ARR is probably my most favourite mtb edit of all time. Don't get me wrong, the second one is still a very cool edit and definitley worthy of everyones' time, but the first one is a true masterpiece! Compared to other mtb edits ARR has it's own unique flavour entirely, and I find myself coming back to it time and time again. It's such a pleasure to watch. Authentically joyful with a light-hearted atmosphere and so little seriousness and ego to it. A bunch of guys and girls just out there riding bikes for the fun of it. Exactly the vibes I'm after myself when riding bikes with my friends. Get's me stoked every time. All that to say; You guys created something truly special. Pat yourselfs on the back, you deserve it!

Also, that thing about how the notoriety starts to attract a different energy: I really feel that. Basically the same thing happened to the group of people I often used to ride with. Once some of them had sort-of gotten instagram famous, there was a palpable vibe shift on group rides. Lots more ego all of a sudden. Rides quickly became less about the actual ride and hanging out with your buddies, but more about opportunities to film "content".

@Muscovir: What I love about this vid (and I am biased as I live and ride where its filmed and know Olsen and the crew well) is that its kind of a day in the life of going and riding with your friends. Its super relatable and a video in which many people can appreciate because of its raw style of filming and looser production. Its more of a community driven film and it just shows the light, yet fun side and the fact that you can go out with your friends film them and come up with something so raw and authentic as AAR has done. Great things build from grassroots projects like this and I love that we are seeing more of this and from a regional side of things. Just shows community matters and bikes are fun no matter how rad you get or how big or small your production is. Good times!

i had not seen roadkills but it was super fun!
as a relatively good skier, i can relate to ski films/edits when i see people hitting big jumps or shredding pow. in contrast, i cannot do a single trick on my bike when hitting a jump, so the ability of those guys (and anyone who is good at jumps, honestly) blows me away

"AS WE KNOW IT" - 50to01
  • 14 0
those guys are really talented, but all their videos are the same
  • 1 0
@Joakinho: valid point. But at least its all the same good stuff.

 @nick-smitty2:
So much good stuff out there, but if we're talking 50to01, I'm nominating:
Trailshark x 50to01 - Bolly Best
  • 10 5
Way better than all these R.E.D. Camera f*cking car commercial ass edits, chill the f*ck out on your $1.5M production team and put some actual soul back into bike videos
  • 1 3
 When does the trend end?
  • 4 0
Hate to break it to you, but a good amount of the videos nominated were filmed on red cameras
  • 1 1
This must've been made on a shoestring budget. It's the only theory I can come up with to explain having to drink Coors.
  • 1 1
@tstep3: yes but the ride or die one was just a crew chilling passing a camera around and that's why it won.
  • 2 0
@luckynugget: lol every other shot was either a red camera being filmed or filmed by a red camera.
  • 1 0
 Deserves a thousand more upvotes
  • 5 0
How in the world do you not put Andreu Lacodeguy's vid on this list? That was incredible storytelling about...yes, just riding!
  • 6 0
gotta give Stark some props, mad shredder hitting the biggest stuff out here
  • 3 0
Pinkbike's "Wyatt Harrington Confronts the Brutal Reality of World Cup Racing - Pinkbike Racing S2E3" was my favorite vid of the year. Good storyline, great production quality, engaging personalities, drama, humor, racing action, crashes. It's a cool look behind the scenes with a good ending. Enjoyed it all the way through.

If a vlog won video of the year I think I'd quit biking
  • 6 1
Atmospheric river rats 2 was the best video I’ve seen in a while. Made me want to get out and goof off in the woods.
  • 7 3
More riding, less talking, and less lifestyle. I watch videos to see riding, not someone pouring a cup of coffee.
  • 3 0
....only 1/2 way through Roadkills and we got sick ass Yotas, RBL Posse(!) AND Dunkerton? This is a fine use of the bandwidth at work.
  • 3 0
Hunter Paul's "When Does The Trend End?" not being on this list is so criminal.

I’m assuming that we are all assuming that we are just talking about 2nd place to anything by that Scandinavian Viking death metal bike punisher dude

Was initially going to make a joke something like, "surprised a trek ad didn't win". Then I realized that one actually did, can't make this shit up.

(No hate to trek, I like the one I have)

 Nothing’s For Free????
  • 4 0
We talked about it, but even though it was released for free for a limited time, given our involvement it wouldn't have been cool to include. Against the spirit of the award anyway.
  • 1 1
I forget that internet videos have names too. I'd usually just go with "that new Trek video" or "Kade Edwards new video" or, "have you seen that one where he does X". Is it just me who thinks giving an internet video a name is a bit poncey?
  • 2 0
Stoked to even get a nomination against so many big hitters!! Cheers pinkbike!!

 stark.

Other (Let us know in the comments, highly upvoted comments will be considered) sounds like a shitty video, why did anyone even vote for that

Man, huge congrats to the Ride or Die channel. I must admit I hadn't seen it until just now and WOWZA, that was awesome Smile

DUST by Godlike was pretty epic. Also, I know it's not a 'film' as such, but the top-to-bottom drone shot from Hardline last year was unreal

 attainment was gold

 I ain’t mad at this..

In the same way all the awards shows are a complete waste of time, so is PB video of the year award... God forbid the actual best video be the one voted by the PEOPLE as the best be the winner....
  • 4 4
Ain't no way y'all robbed Caleb like that. You just know he's going to come out with a F*** Video Of the Year edit and show everyone why they got it wrong.
  • 1 0
Wheelers getting welded on in a barn-sized carport? Everything after that is gravy.
  • 2 0
It's the video of the year because it doesn't autoplay

Zablotny deserves more love. That ender is one of the best of all time.

 Gabriel Wibmer's "Gravel Mania"
  • 1 0
It should actually be a Trek Video.
  • 3 2
So the people don't vote, it's just PB's choice?
  • 2 0
The PB editorial team argues out the winner for the PB award, and then underneath you can see the results of the Readers Choice award—which is what people voted for.

@brianpark: Oh ok, I get it now.

You guys dont happen top have the links of the rest of the videos?

I kind of want to compile that list for you and others and post it here, but I could also just recommend to use a search engine, just as I would, to make that list.
(If there's any you can't find, respond to this and I'll try and find them for you.)
