Fox 34 RAD Prototype?

May 6, 2013
by Matt Wragg
At the Specialized/SRAM Enduro Series race at Lake Garda this weekend, we spotted a new fork on the bikes of Nico Lau and Dan Atherton. At Sea Otter, Fox showed us some updates to the 34 line, but did not mention a RAD version of the fork, which is their Racing Applications Development programme. We know Nico's Cube Stereo is 650B and we are pretty sure Dan's GT Force LE has been modded to take the larger wheel size, so we know that much about the fork, although Fabien Barel, the other high profile Fox rider in the race, opted to run a 36RC2 in the race, so we haven't seen a 26" version of the fork, but assume one must be forthcoming.

Uppers 2

This is the giveaway - both Dan Atherton and Nico Lau were running RAD-badged forks in the race.

The axle

At the axle there was little to report.

On the outside there seems little to separate the fork from the production version, as far as we could see it was pretty standard. Inside we can only guess as nobody was too keen to talk about this on the record. We know Barel was running a Mojo-modified damping cartridge in his 34 earlier this year, so we wonder if that's filtered up to the factory programme. We would also hazard a guess that they have borrowed some of the spring leg technology from the new air-sprung 40.

The compression adjuster.

A standard CTD adjuster sits on top of the compression leg of the fork.

Spring leg.

On the spring leg it's just a blank, blue cap like Fox air forks have always used.

and we've known about the 34 rad for a while... if you pay attention to not JUST the headlines on pibkbike

Until they get rid of that stupid CTD damper I can't be bothered anyway. You'd think the top level riders it's aimed at should be able to set it to their likings or at least know how to count so they can use the standard settings..

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOX, 34RC2. I couldn't buy one fast enough. CTD is cool, but not that cool. If the trail adjust controlled the damping in the descend mode id be on board 100%. And I own, a 34 ctd 26"

lill' after war info.. US deliberately let the germans sink a passenger ship.. so they could join the war.. (and the US people supported the decision) sort of 911 kind of thing..
and strudel is awefull.. Razz
  • 24
Strudel awful?! You probably mean the one they sell in Amsterdam to college boys: one with mushrooms and acid. I saw a mushroom pizza there, and chocolate with acid. A girl in our student group got really fkd up after the lunch!

I f*cking love Apfel Strudel! Especialy in Vienna! And Germans could give you their beers, Weissbier ist fantastich! German sausage is awesome as well. You want a historical fk up? Deal with Soviets!
  • 10
strudel is from austria tbh.. and not german..
amsterdam can sink in the ground for all i care.
and i love russia.. lil bit corrupt.. but at least they dont f*ck up like europe does.. democracy is a lie !
i rather have an honest and open dictator,.., lol
  • 24
I agree! A Dictatorship can be great, they all did it wrong in the past Big Grin

I "love" the line of Mr Bernard Shaw: "My friend Stalin and his doctrine were very promising, but he just started killing wrong people!"
  • 10
hahahaha the wrong people.. if they are not with you.. they are against. you !
a friend is just a person who didnt attack yet.,. lol
  • 35
Bernard Shaw is the classic example of an "useful idiot". A person who Orwell describes as: "certain ideas are so stupid that only an intellectual might find attractive". Shaw famous for his ideas like: "everyone should be able to state his usefulness to the society, if unable to do so, should be executed", liked Stalin and communism a lot. Went to Russia few times where he was shown by Members of The Party how awesome communism is. He was invited to parties where he talked to Soviet "intelectualls" as well as was shown around villages full of happy people.

If someone does not see a paralell to bike-journalism, or any " gear test/review" in any industry - the he/she is really deluded. it is not hard to manipulate people at all. That's what you do - you take a guy having access to masses, that is quite positive towards your product, and you kill his scepticism completely (real sceptics are only few, they are irrelevant, they have too small audience) - you show him around all the best you have, you flatter his intellect and skills, and he comes back to his desk 100% convinced (I mean truly convinced) that the shit you shown him is perfect! He likes it so much, that all he wants to do is to tell other people how great it is. That's why ability to critical thinking is extremely important, and how "stoke" is often nothing more than cliché, useful for the third party. All action sports marketing swings around it - "Make people stoked about what you do!" - how often we ask ourselves: but really - who gives a shit about what he/she does? Why should someone watch my GoPro on my FB profile?! Who should really give a fk? - one answer: your friends and family - who else do you fkn need?!

  • 220
in David Attenborugh's voice>"...and the deepness of blue on this very intriguing knob left few questions still unanswered. One, mistakenly expecting game changing news, is still wondering how one can get those stickers themselves..."

And the world carries on as usually...
  • 40

  • 190
Maybe they wanted a rad sticker to make their fork look well more rad? No matter what every year there will be something new so they can say this is the fork you've been waiting for its the best coolest most totally rad fork ever buy it buy it now!
  • 113
I feel like we're reaching a point where shocks just become so advanced that trying to improve them would be impossible and stupid.
  • 31
at the end,it will be like that
  • 101
No way! Technology has a long way to go, in 10 years time we will be comparing these forks to old Nokia brick phones and the I phones we have know
  • 40
Big things have small beginnings, in this case small changes that will overall build up to something largely different from known shock technology, not to mention people in the 1950s thought that technology won't be able to progress and they weren't even aware of computers really.
  • 63
What about anti dive tech for mainstream fork companies? There will always be stronger and lighter. How about a kashima that isn't ugly gold.
  • 32
"reaching a point where shocks just become so advanced that trying to improve them would be impossible and stupid."...didn't that happen when rigid forks were invented..?
  • 70
i think he meant we're reaching the point where's too much pointless crap on the market
  • 40
Technology will peak , bullshit and hype is ever growing.
  • 32
Too hard too keep up with all their changes every year, makes it difficult to get familiar with anything they make from a mechanical point of view.

Their forks require too much maintenance for the nw, unless you like working on your stiff while others are out riding. And if you don't maintain it internal parts get destroyed sometimes (scratched up staunchios). Marzocchi coil forks are smoother and 100 percent more reliable, I'll take the weight penalty.

Also every summer Fox's service center gets so backed up it takes forever (sometimes over a month) to get non-warranty shocks and forks serviced. This is an obvious sign of a company making unreliable products, they can't keep up with their own failures. But they will never go out of business cause they charge so much for everything.
  • 20
Some valid points, but I'm guessing the service center that you mention is (or was last year) a one man enterprise out of a garage and not the official service center. The garage enterprise was busy due to the guy's reputation and nothing to do with Fox. Now he has moved and has help. A couple of other points. People can of course get their routine servicing done in the off season (I got my DHX5 turned around in a day earlier in the season), most shops are perfectly capable of doing lower servicing and of course there is the official channel too. Finally, it's easy enough to do a lower service yourself. It's waaaay to easy to look for someone else to blame.
  • 10
I think high end / middle range suspension got pretty f*cking awesome in recent years. And as with everything it's getting harder and harder to improve performance-wise.
But instead of finding expensive ways of making it better (exotic materials, precision manufacturing,..) I would appreciate them to look for way of making the manufacturing eco-friendlier for instance. Or making it cheaper obviously or offer more color options. There must be more into brands image then just straight out performance. And I don't see any of these options (including making it cheaper) as a loss of money for producer.
  • 91
Just change stickers on a product and generate buzz... with or without reason? Who knows...
  • 71
Glad to see I am not the only one chewing up the wrench flats on the spring top cap...can't they make them a little taller? That would be news. Not sure what acronym they would use. Perhaps that's why it hasn't happened.
  • 21
Just take a socket and machine the face down so it's deep enough to not round the corners, it's what I use.
  • 20
Not sure why encorp got neg repped (I've re-instated it....) when it's a fairly normal thing to do. Check out the tools at Marzocchi Canada....
  • 61
The only RAD thing going right now is the PIKE or some XF, Im so over my 34float and ctd shock!
  • 10
well the relaunched pike owes its existence to the 34, i doubt that rock shox would have bothered with it if fox hadn't launched the 34, still id like to see an rc2 version or at least an rlc... fox you have the dampers just plug one in for us!!!
  • 50
I don't like fox34, I was good with the 32 '831' and the 36, that was enough options...
  • 50
Maybe next time have some information before you write an article??? Something besides speculation and flat out guesses.
  • 50
Will pay top dollar for only the latest acronyms.
  • 40
Well if these stickers are "just to create buzz", looking at the comments they sure have worked.
  • 10
they're always Prototype in races, it's part of the R&D, well CTD or RAD will be fine as long as you keep in mind to SRC (Shred/Ride/Climb).
Racing Applications Development programme it sounds to Pro for most of us Wink lol
  • 30
RAD is a new riders organization - Riders Against Damping - all the Fox pro's get free membership when they stick a CTD fork on their bikes...:-)
  • 20
How didn't anyone else notice the other RAD prototypes being sported by th likes of Steve peat , josh Bryceland and gwin and sea otter ?
  • 30
Tons of riders on sea other were using 34's in all lengths and wheel sizes, nothing to see here.

Martin Maes was riding a RAD fork at his dads first enduro race this year, he was back on 'stock' 34s for the last two races (yesterday and two weeks ago)

The most useless article ever, but I do like my Fox 34 don't know why people hate them so much??
  • 21
 it's not a 32, neither a 36, why we need a 15" axle? can't 36 have CTD?

What about a 36 180 FIT RC2, just like the 40s, but SC and 8 Inch travel.
  • 10
 I am retarded.
  • 10
 Eh nothing crazy, no point.
  • 10
 Sweet haha
  • 21
 What about the RAD 831?
  • 23
If fox made a 35mm version of the 40 they would dominate the market as its the size that puts me off nothing else
  • 10
 Show me the money!!
  • 12
dude that fork is so rad! sorry i had to

 I love anything fox.
