Quite the stacked podium and quite the deserving Canadian atop it.

I'm British, I'd love to see Gee take the title but I couldn't wipe the smile off my face watching Stevie ride, that guy kills it!! I think we're watching someone who is going to dominate the sport in years to come and what a nice guy to boot!

His run was perfect, he kept it so smooth over the roughest crap, hitting all the backsides, pumped the last crap out of that track. Sam looked almost as good, he kept amazing speed through the woods, I wouldn't be surprised if this is his best form ever.

That podium is insane!! Second last picture I noticed that Gee was to good to celebrate with the rest. Steve, you have no idea how happy I was to see you knock Gee off the top spot. Cant let him win everything otherwise his head will get bigger. Okay I did notice there is a champagne spray coming from the left hand side of the pic but they probably didn't want Gee in the photo anyway. Or is it just me?

I love how people make sweeping judgements about a guy based on one or two pictures on the internet after a race. "Gee is not smiling in the picture". First, so what. Second, its a picture. Maybe he was smiling and in that 1/100th of a second he didn't happen to be smiling. I say this all the time but what the heck do people expect of the guys who didn't win? You expect them to join the party? Where in the real world does that actually happen? Does the losing team in the Super Bowl join the party for the winning team? Get over it, guys like Gee who can and have won before are disappointed when they don't win. Steve Smith didn't look all that happy the last few rounds when he finished behind Gee did he?

As long as guys are gracious afterward, congratulate the winner, stand on the podium etc, that's it. If you watch the video Gee is one of the first people over to Stevie, gave him a big handshake (with a big smile on his face BTW). Expecting anything more than that is kind of ridiculous.

  • 3 1
just a fan of dh and riders' style but maybe you can roll up to him and talk to him soon and get a different take. he's headed your way nxt month.
  • 20 1
People make (stupid) sweeping judgements about sportsmanship and they spot and crucify the split second you're not smiling because they've never been in a situation where they give everything they've got for months and years to have it boil down to a 5-minute sprint. They'll never understand the pain or the heartache that comes with crossing that finish line, knowing you left everything on that run, only to have it not be good enough for the win. They hate and criticize because they've never been in those shoes or in that situation where ones dedication and passion simply don't always mean one will have good luck.

Gee's a great athlete, and great athletes face disappointment. Let him have his disappointment, at least; he's earned it. And he'll get over it and move on and comeback. That's what great athletes (and people) do. That's why they're great.

Was it not Stevie himself who said in Strength in Numbers that he hated losing, even when he lost to his girlfriend at Fußball? As said enough times above, these guys are competitors first and foremost and friends later. The reason Gee and Stevie have both stood on the top of the podium this year is because they both hate losing.
  • 8 1
remember smith's segment in seasons with his mom shuttling up in their truck over and over so he could practice? both their work and sacrifices are starting to bear fruit so I would imagine he's as focused as ever. if these guys miss out on a smile or bromance on the podium with each other it's probably safe to assume that they're frustrated only at themselves and each one knows it everytime. nbd

Not taking anything away from his winning run, it was awesome. But even if he rode it for a week more than the rest, id say theres an advantage there. Danny hart was riding champery a week before the rest of the field even turned up, he won the worlds. Still not taking anything away from his winning run.....but you get my point.

I'm detecting some serious media-reporting bias going on here. Just because Steve has the coolest and creepiest mustache ever, he's Canadian, he's fast as f*ck, he won in his home country, and Pinkbike is a Canadian site doesn't make it "soooooo much cooler" that he won. I mean, the real story here is that Gwin was on the podium!

Wait, no it's not. I'm from the U.S.A. and I was freaking out (in a good way) when Steve won. Soooo rad.

I don't think gee gives a shit about others results nor do the other riders. Its them against the clock,he'll be angry about his own run and analysing every mistake. These guys just wanna win every time and hate losing. That's why they're the best and we just watch! He congratulated stevie on his win like a good pro,if I sponsored a rider and he or she was happy when losing id be asking some serious questions about desire, wouldn't you!

Its because for me gee and Steve smith are on a totally different level at the minute, where as Greg Sam and gwin ain't competitive at the minute so its easy to be happy when your out of contention, for those guys a win is a bonus. Its between Steve and gee hence they look angry when they lose. Think gee will nick it but only just.

Its called being 'humble' a good sport and showing fans like me, that you can loose graciously and can still feel happiness for others and not have a face like a slapped arse. Its not as if he gets paid less if he looses
  • 9 1
Humble has nothing to do with it nor do the fans like you! He's doing it for him and no one else or the money. These guys are the elite in their field. Winning is everything,do you even race competitively? If you do you'll know what I mean. I did and as soon as I couldn't win anymore I quit. For some second is just the first loser, that's the way I think in anything I take seriously, maybe your happy to be second best just don't expect gee to be.

Gee is an amazing athlete, but he can take losing hard and often hides in the pits immediately after the race to sulk e.g. MSA 2011.

They all want to win and start prepping/training almost soon as the season is over. EVERYTHING is riding on that one 3-5 minute run.

I could imagine Gee being happy with 2nd and his continued lead of the World Cup series. He got beat by Stevie even with a small advantage to him. It was amazing riding from Stevie and any racer would be slightly stoked. Especially, when they are fellow Redbull athletes and spent time in New Zealand riding together for the film Follow Me. There is a lot of camaraderie in the sport of Downhill.
  • 1 0
Well for the past two years Gee has had his hopes crushed Gwin and now he feels like this is his year to shine. You can't blame him if it seems like he's got on top early only to possibly have others topple his throne later in the season.
  • 1 0
Well he does still have a decent sized lead. Gee is still very much in control of the overall at this point. He's does have 2 wins and has finished ahead of Stevie in 3 out of 4 rounds.
  • 5 0
I sure wish some of this "Gee not smiling" stuff wouldn't have started up. For the record, I can think of more then one time Stevie Smith was like this as well near the end of last season. He was close and was hard on himself about it as well. I seem to remember him with a bit of a grimace at World Champs.

That said, he's the nicest f*cking dude in BC!!!!!!!! But just like Gee, he's intense as hell's heat! He's on a mission that's been seen nothing but consistent progression. This year, a win was inevitable. And short of winning, the only person that's been more consistent then he is Gee.

It's not easy being that motivated and intense to then turn around after a dissapointment and put the smiley face back on. For some, it is easier, but they are still disappointed and the wheels are still turning in the back of their heads.

And a short list of others I've seen disappointed / upset at the bottom of the hill include Ragot, Blenkinsop, and Nicole. All of whom are still aces in my opinion (not that it counts much).

But whatever! After a couple of runs down Duffman and a crash on Devils Club (brushing trees at speed is not good practice), these guys seem like gods!
  • 10 0
Yea for some reason people think 'losing graciously' has to mean you wave pom-poms and and give the winner a reach around. A congratulatory handshake and a "good job" apparently isn't good enough for the message board crowd.
  • 2 0

@mikelee.....you sound quite the arrogant person.....can you not crack a smile if you loose fairly, nope, you gave up. I have raced, but not at any great level, im not a racer, i just like to ride. The statement i made about smiling, is just my point of view, it doesnt have to be yours. But I would much rather see someone smiling than miserable as sin. Look at gwin....the guy smashed the entire field last year. This year, his results are poor, yet he still manages to SMILE!!!! You have to have the whole package if you want to be a world class athlete. This is not to say I dont like Gee, the man is a machine....it just seems to be a recurring theme......I could create a blog.....'The upside down smile of Gee Atherton'

A true champion wins AND loses with grace. The way I see it, if you're pissed off with coming second and just sulk, what you're telling everyone is that you're perfect and unbeatable and something unfair took the win away from you. The podium of a downhill race should have guys being absolutely stoked with what they do, how they've performed and having the chance to be up on that podium. Gee may be pretty damn good this year, but he's not perfect and can't win everything every single time, that would imply he's racing sub-par opposition. If you take a look at the last step of the podium you will see a dude who dominated this sport so much that people simply couldn't work out how he did it. Yet he's happy with his riding and moreover is happy when a fellow racer wins their home race, with huge pressure and added difficulty of changing conditions - most people looking at that situation will say 'damn that sport is fun if the top guys love being up there so much'.
  • 4 0
For the last time! Gee ain't pissed with anyone but himself,he held back. Everyone could see he held back. After two massive crashes in qualifying and then last day practice,he was probably shook up and in pain. So he decided to take a steady run,as soon as he said at the bottom his run was smooth you knew he was gutted. Winning runs ain't smooth, they're fast, risky on the edge like stevie was. All or nothing. That's why he's angry end of. Now please stop using gwin as an example of being gracious in defeat, now he's a nice bloke they all are. Its only because he's way off this year that we're seeing that side of the guy. But trust me if he and gee swapped places you'd the same old gwin, smashing everyone and being pissed for losing a race due to your own errors! Steve was exactly the same when he got beat cos he held back. In the off season they're all friends, all laughs and fun. Now its race face time! Lets see how happy Steve is if he finishes second next round! No one smiles when they lose. Unless your totally retarded!

He's probably even more disappointed that his INSANE luck with the weather was gonna hold out for him to take the win, but Steve said "Mother F-uck!" and went just a little bit faster.  One down and one more to go! Garbonzo DH, here we go!! Can't wait for next weekend. Wasn't too worried about watching the Crankworx stuff this weekend, it was all about the MSA DH action, but next weekend. I predict a full case of beer and some extra cash to pay my internet provider for watching all of it live stream. Congrats to a big win on home dirt Stevie! You and that Devinci are made for each other. Sick bike for a sick rider....

"Gee Atherton tried to reduce his ability to father a child, Gwin tried to punch something mid ball up, and Bren-dawg nearly merked a couple of marshals."

I want to see photos of Brendog's whip after he almost killed himself, that was an action of the day!
  • 3 0
Wasn't it? I was sure he was dead then he punched it into that smooth a$$ whip!

Perhaps a screenshot off the replay?

When Rach fell, I thought for sure she killed a baby, then I saw it was just a TOY Baby in the backpack, but at first, I SAID OMG!!! She just killed a kid.!! My heart raced for a moment there.....anyone else?? My wife was freaking out.....in the opposite rant, she went off on whomever was standing that close with a kid sack anyway....crazy parents she says...
  • 1 0
The sack was close not the parent or the kid

Thing is Gee was ahead of Stevie all the way until the final jump. But I am amazed by both their riding and all riders racing the World Cup

Now the joke from Follow me implies - Knock knock it's the broken pencil..never mind it's pointless

Can't believe someone neg-propped you on that. They must not have seen the flick. Either that or they are pissed off Gee Fanboi's.
  • 2 1
Anyone have a link to two things 1) the overall world cup standings and 2) how the points are awarded each race? I've always been curious about that but am having the hardest time finding it.
  • 1 0
Just go to the UCI's page, click on 'rankings and results', then men's MTB downhill -- all of the points and rankings and standings are there... Actually, anyone who has even 1 UCI point will be somewhere on that list.

Anyone know what happened to brycelands rear wheel? Broken spokes? Cracked carbon rim?
  • 1 0
I went to the UCI where you are suggesting but I think that rankings list is the overall UCI rankings, not the actual World Cup series rankings.

Did anyone get a shot of Gee's high speed manual in the fast section? There was at least one photographer right there on course.

when stevie crossed the line you could hear the crowd go crazy, it was an amazing moment in MSA, was so pumped to be right there epic race congrats stevie!!!!

Not taking anything away from Steve but his run did look a lot dryer than the 10 guys before him, maybe not too far off the conditions for Gee's run afterall?
  • 2 0
Steve Smith's performance was on the level of Michael Jordan's 36 points with the flu in the NBA finals. Inspiring run!

 Brendawg- the massiah of whip

I love how he retains modesty(even after an amazing race like that), so cool to see.

No comments about the devinci? Seems to me that its firmly established itself as a true world-class DH race machine.
  • 2 0
They are all world class machines , just some days one rider will be 3 bike lengths faster than another
