Video: Because Metal Rules

Nov 2, 2015
by Matt Beer
Highway 99 in British Columbia leads to some great locations to ride bikes. I dragged my urbanite brother, Danny, up to Pemberton to make a short film that was more raw and less generic than the edits you often see nowadays. Mix it up! Step outside your comfort zone and ride something that requires a little more from your senses than a dirt sidewalk in the woods.

Your mom's favourite tune: "The Weak and The Wise" by Black Tusk

bigquotesWe are trying so hard for an identity that we are stealing from skiing and motorcross, while still not really achieving an image of our own? Freehuckers are trying so hard to be skiers and snowboarders, xc wieners are trying to be roadies, and downhillers are trying to be supercross stars. Go, get a low budget vx1000 and film random sh*t edits, no story lines, no slow mo, and pump those f*ckers out every week. Lay off this f*cking skier brah bro mentality and maybe then we could have our own identity.
- Derp

I wouldn't say that Danny makes random sh!t edits because he graduated from the Vancouver Film School in June. He isn't a mountain biker either, so he has some neat ideas that come from beyond the cookie cutter.

Low budget vx1000 trying to be skaters.
  • 33 2
Not that I see anything wrong with that.
  • 8 2
nothing low budget about running a vx1k these days as well. way cheaper to grab an older dslr like a t2i off craigslist than deal with tapes and maintenance on a 15 year old 3 chip camera

that being said, i still love the look of a vx/dvx over dslrs any day, just too lazy to put up with minidv these days

Feel like the music was more intense than the riding was haha
  • 3 2
Lol i agree actually i stop watching after 1 min

Matt's the 2x Canadian DH champ, he's a f*cking shredder. Its just that he isn't flailing around trying to look faster than he actually is. Smooth = fast

 @MDRipper I hate the beer.
  • 27 0
Beer is the answer, but I can't remember the question...
  • 4 0
All good my friend, it was a generalization. I usually end up hating the beer the morning after a long night out on the town.
  • 6 0
To be fair I've gone right off beer over the years, I pretty much only drink Vodka nowadays.
  • 2 1
Hank, I was in Bonny Scotland this past summer... Change it over to peat mulled scotch!

Beer is haram you American pig! Allahu Akbar!

A good edit with some raps is awesome. But what's wrong with an edit with a chill song ? What's wrong with an edit full of slow mo ? Every filmmaker has his own identity, and I'm glad all the video are different. Pinkbike will be boring other way. Nice video and obviously riding too.
  • 11 0
I'm glad all the videos are different, too. Gotta have something at either end of the spectrum! At the end of the day, these comments don't matter when you have fun riding.
  • 3 0
I'm glad the soundtrack the bike and dirt was making was audible. some of my favourite vids have no music but they have "music". if you know what I mean
  • 19 0
Mountain biking is eclectic. It borrowed and tweaked from a wide variety of sources and came up with something original, thats what makes it so cool. Don't believe for a minute Chris Akrig or Matt Hunter can't climb hills or put down some miles or that Marco Fontana and Nino Schurter can't cross em up and carve berms. Just like the wheel size debate, I really don't feel the need to pick a side. If anyone identifies with one type of riding over another that's cool but the variety of styles and riders and bikes (including wheel sizes) are all in mtb's best interest.

 thanks for existing!

Now I don't have to write my own comment. Just thought of the non-conformists from South Park demanding everyone conform to their non-conforming ways. Ride what's fun... brah! Well I guess I commented anyway.

 right.

 well said man!

Classic weak sale of how cool and righteous your shit is then everybody else's .. True greatness does not sit on a heap of slander to appear king of the castle. Way to be part of the trendy controversial story writing just to get the views.. sad sell boys
  • 4 1
 100% agree
  • 4 1
but he went to film school...
  • 3 0
I don't know how he graduated from film school with all of those zooms, in and out, super choppy, mixed with crazy pans. Bro.

Every time I see the word metal on PB I think it's gonna be kovarik punishing dirt
  • 2 0
 Same thought exactly!

I'm a huge Metal fan, but that song did not work. I had to turn it down. It was just power chords and yelling, no real emotion. I love doom metal, folk metal, power metal, black metal, and more, but that doesn't mean I'll use them in an edit. It needs to fit with the riding. I bet he was stoked and having a bast! There are metal songs that can give that feeling.
  • 4 1
 folk metal?
  • 1 0
@conv3rt sure man, Crosby Stills and THRASH.
  • 1 0
Ooo I don't know I was pretty stoked on that one. Song was reminiscent of Cirith Ungol meets Kylesa / butthole surfers...Kinda gave to the raw nature of the editing. I will definitely be checking out Black Tusk in the future. They cant all be dubstep and supermans...
  • 2 0
Set the Dial is their best album, good stuff.
  • 2 0
Yeah, I find metal music can be a super personal thing. I'll love some bands, and have no feelings for others within the same genre. It's hard to please everyone, even metalheads!
  • 1 0
 Yeah it is. Solid album.
  • 3 0
True True JB, I don't like a lot of stuff that probably sounds really similar (for people who don't listen to metal) to stuff I really like. Also, you left off Adventure Metal which is perhaps the most a propos metal to be paired with riding hahaha! Somebody needs to make a killer edit using 3 inches of Blood's Forest King!
  • 6 0
Wait there's something wrong with mimicking skiing and moto style? That's what I love. Everyone loves throwing dirt and saying "braap" and getting loose on their bike. It looks like skiing or mx? So it does. Now stop judging and let me ride.
  • 2 1
NO. He's talkin 'bout creating an identity for the sport via media, not how one rides. If this video is not letting you ride, you got moar problems than a simple identity crisis.
  • 1 0
Hmm okay. And it's the opposite. Sometimes videos make me want to shred. Even if they have ski/moto undertones
  • 1 0
 What is the opposite?
  • 1 0
Well mtb owes its existence to moto so there's nothing wrong with that. Ski filming has brought some professional aspects to mtg filming which is a good thing. Im not saying this is a bad video but it's not like I haven't seen edits like this before.
  • 1 0
@TheMastodon You are incorrect, the motorcycle owes it's existence to the bicycle, which was invented before roads existed, essentially making them off-road bicycles or velocipedes. And none of that has anything to do with DH'ers borrowing style from MX'ers, which is what was being referenced here. And I agree, there have been edits like this before.
  • 1 1
Where do you think the introduction of suspension came from? Motorcycles. The first bicycles are a far cry from modern mountain bikes. I never said anything about style but that too is largely borrowed from motocross.
  • 1 1
Incorrect again @TheMastodon shock absorbers came from automobiles first
  • 1 1
OMG you know nothing. They first experimented with moto shocks on mountain bikes. Im not talking about the creation of suspension or talking about the invention of bicycles. I'm talking about recent history. And the bicycle wasn't invented before roads.
  • 1 1
Incorrect again... these modern "moto" shock absorbers you refer to were first used on BMX bikes, long before keith bontrager and paul turner made shox for mtb's. Paved roads, or roads as we now know them, didn't exist before bikes. Stay in skool!
  • 2 0
 I sense a theme here
  • 1 1
 That is correct!
  • 1 1
The bike was invented in the 1800s. The Roman Empire had roads for god sake. What a stupid argument. They put suspension on motorcycles long before bmx bikes existed.
  • 1 1
You have misconstrued nearly everything I've said. Your statements regarding of the history of bicycles and suspension clearly shows your lack of knowledge on the subject, which is available to you with just a little google-fu... Smooth paved roads came after bicycles. BMX had shock absorbers before MTB. Bikes had an archaic form of suspension before they motorized them. Automobiles had the first form of suspension dampers. Proclaiming "mtb owes its existence to moto" is a grossly inaccurate statement.
  • 1 1
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_road_transport there you go. Have you heard of fox suspension and marzocchi? Guess what they made before entering the mountain bike market? Im done, I win.
  • 1 1
Good example. That explains that roads were rougher than an IMBA trail up until the late 19th century in areas that people travelled by bicycle, and they demanded better ones! "The Good Roads Movement occurred in the United States between the late 1870s and the 1920s. Advocates for improved roads led by bicyclists turned local agitation into a national political movement"... Ever heard of the first mountain bike shock manufacturer that is still around today? Does the name ROCK SHOX ring a bell? Posting errant insults and incorrect info makes you a loser @TheMastodon
  • 2 1
The first mountain bikes didn't even have suspension. Your wiki link even states bicycles used roads before any motorized vehicle, so what point were you trying to make? Maybe you should have Wiki'd 'motorcycle history'. Oh wait, first paragraph, "Motorcycles are descended from the "safety bicycle," a bicycle with front and rear wheels of the same size and a pedal crank mechanism to drive the rear wheel." We can all clearly see the point you are trying to make about modern mountain bikes, you just don't understand that your original statement is an incorrect generalization about the history of mountain biking, which had nothing to do with motorcycles.
  • 1 1
Thank you! Way to keep it real. Solid @bradwalton , Solid. The truth is out there!
  • 1 0
you made a general statement saying bicycles existed before roads which is incorrect. A dirt road is still a road as well as ones paved with stone. Where do you think the technology that rockshox used in the first suspension components came from? Where do you think the rear shock came from, or front fork. Yes mountain biking existed before they brought suspension into the game but it was very different. Imagine this video without suspension. I never said bicycles owe their existence to motorcycles. I said mountain biking owes it's existence to motocross and the technology invented in that sport. @bradwalton, "incorrect generalization about the history of mountain biking, which had nothing to do with motorcycles". Are you serious? And the argument that bmx bikes had suspension before mountain bikes. BMX: Bicycle motocross. Bmx largely exist because of motorcycles. In my first statement I was talking about modern mountain biking. Imagine mountain biking without suspension, disc brakes, gripes, knobby tires, body amor, helmets that actually work etc..
  • 1 1
Don't waste my time, we already went over that. I can imagine MTB'ing without gripes because I know my history about modern bicycles, roads, trails and where the roots of two wheeled transport come from, I don't have to make up reasons to be upset. I have been studying this since before you were born and will continue to until I die. Moto might be en vogue right now in MTB, but like they said, "free your mind, and the rest will follow"
  • 1 0
Your idea of mtb must be riding on a dirt road. You seem to be ignoring all the points I make so I going to stop, arguing with you feels like arguing with a republican.
  • 1 0
couldn't be further from the truth
  • 1 0
I hardly ever comment on things. You two just make up and kiss im tired of these notifications
  • 2 1
We realize now you were talking about modern mountain biking, but that's not what you said originally. "Mtb owes its existence to moto." An incorrect generalization. Surely you can understand how a mtb'er on a mtb site would be opposed to this statement.
  • 8 1
Its a nice edit, but not sure why the filmmaker has such a stick up his ass about action sports style or whatever. There's nothing revolutionary here, so calm the fuck down.
  • 1 0
I liked the video but I don't get why it has to come with the quote. I wasn't aware that declarations of loyalty to a certain style were required. Is there a video syndicate telling videographers what and how they should make content? I like it all. Glad you want to stand out somehow and please keep making a wide variety of content.
  • 10 5
 Love the Derp quote!
  • 4 6
Seriously though. Flow trails are watered down MX, freehucking is higher consequence skiing. Why not just do those sports if you want to hit huge high speed jumps or to billy goat your way through exposed cliff lines? Mountain bikes are unique for how maneuverable they are through tech, where you can lift and pump through the trail to create flow where it wouldn't otherwise exist.
  • 12 0
Thinking about this more, I'm an idiot. You build off what you're already good at. Who cares if your sport is influenced by another? I don't need to spend years learning to skate to have fun at a skatepark, I can have a great time on a bike (26" at that) and it will make me better on the trails.

I'm just ornery because I didn't ride this weekend.

Didn't know anyone was concerned about the identity of mtn bikers..... Sick riding.
  • 5 1
Only The Karver can ride well between metal...
  • 1 0
Never have I heard such obsession with identity and being different. Just be yourself. I now understand that the term, 'More raw and less generic' basically means they couldn't be assed to carry a tripod.
  • 1 0
I definitely enjoyed the video. That said, it's almost a style-replica of Kenny Smiths earlier videos from 2011-ish. Lots of 2sec clips and fast camera movement, not to mention the metal.
  • 2 0
This is the Canadian National Champ... Just saying.... Sick video and really nice guy!

Mr. Beeer thats fukkin radical dude!!!!!!!! that trail looked fun as hell!!! keep it up and thanks for your help this year, i really appreciated it!!!
  • 1 0
STIFF suspension. It looked he's using an XC race bike's worth of travel. Aaron Gwin's travel usage seems similar. Fast but looks painful.
  • 1 0
Metal, intense bikes, chromag handlebar and flat pedals, only thing were missing here is the addition of Kovarik. Would be so sick to see Matt and Kovarik drifting some ruts.
