Bike Check: Remi Gauvin's Rocky Mountain Altitude - Bielsko-Biala EDR World Cup 2024

May 16, 2024
by Dario DiGiulio

With a new season underway, a refreshed race bike, and a few new sponsors in the mix, Remi Gauvin is looking to make his mark on the 2024 Enduro World Cup. The Canadian racer has seen solid results over the past few seasons, finishing 2023 in 20th overall. With a totally reinvented bike for this year's racing, he's hoping for more.

Far from the stock setup, he's running his Rocky Mountain Altitude with a variety of unique parts, with some unreleased Fox suspension, TRP drivetrain and brakes, and Race Face finishing kit. As I covered in the First Ride, the bike has a ton of geometry and wheel size adjustments to be made, so it'll be interesting to see how various racers end up dialing in their specific builds.

Remi's bike is set in Position 4, the steepest option of the lot. This results in a 63.7° head angle.

photo
His Medium frame is set in the long headset position, providing a reach figure of 463mm.

When asked about the electronic RAD shock and the bolt-on sensors, Remi's only response was "What shock? All I see are some blinking lights."

photo
The Podium Gold 38 goes well with the TRP color theme.

Of course featuring the new Grip X2 damper.

50mm stem, 40mm rise bar cut to 760mm, and a computer mount to watch movies on the liasons.

Says prototype, but isn't. This is the new Transfer Fox released last month, with a healthy grip of electrical tape wrapped around it.

Digging for goods.
photo
The goods in question. Mastic tape, spare pads and cables, and plenty of zip ties are squirreled away in there.

photo
Tidy cockpit, despite some extra buttons on the left-hand side.

photo
Turbine alloy wheels for durability and feel, wrapped in DH tires and a small insert in the rear.
photo
TRP's EVO12 drivetrain.

photo
These new rotors from TRP are said to have a 10% higher deceleration rate compared to the previous version.
photo
Remi runs them with the blue Performance Resin pads.

That's all for now - good luck to Remi this weekend.

@Steppenwolf83 I thought the orange was awful and didn't color coordinate with anything, the gold is worse.

i feel like they need a gold coil for the rear shock

@Gnaarls: Coils shouldn't be anything other than black or Ti grey.

thats good, matchy matchy is ugly
  • 10 1
It's almost like they want their product to stand out.

@marlon-d: I'm sorry, but red super deluxe coils look cool

Mara Lago Gold with Ford Light Jade is forecast to be hot next year.

I absolutely love these flat gold forks. I think they would've looked spectacular on a black Guerilla Gravity.
  • 4 0
Actually it works very well on this bike. But generally, owning a top-to-bottom gold fork would be a bit over the top, unless you're a ripper.
  • 2 2
Im with ya dude, looks ugly as dumbfuck.

Gold over orange any day of the week. Orange lowers on gold fork tubes is absolute gash.
  • 3 2
Gold over orange. This looks way better than a typical black Rock Shox.
  • 2 0
Either my monitor is not calibrated well or this looks nothing like gold. IMO it looks brown. In fact, it has almost exactly the same color as my waste this morning!
  • 2 0
@hohmskullkrishten: Yeah they should do away with the orange and keep the heritage colours permanently, would be much better
  • 48 3
Going to get downvoted to oblivion cuz of pinkbike hivemind but I actually think the color scheme looks good.
  • 11 0
I do too. Looks great, except for the fork uppers not actually matching the lowers.
  • 4 0
I think it's great too. Just needs Performance Elite black uppers instead.
  • 40 9
I don’t normally care too much about color schemes but that’s just awful looking, mostly due to the fact Fox gold on gold just looks horrible.
  • 3 5
Yeah, it's gross. I saw another black altitude with it and it was way nicer. This is garish.
  • 4 4
Gold is the new orange at Fox's house and it looks brown at the end, like when a bad painter mixes colors at random.
  • 3 2
Yeah but you commented on it, so their objective has succeeded
  • 29 7
I prefer the other Megatower colors.
  • 9 2
Normal VPP can’t even hold a candle to the LC2R. Oh man it’s light years better
  • 1 0
Agreed! Gold is so much nicer asethically and way more neutral of a color than fluorescent orange of the old factory equipment haha
  • 1 1
@hi-dr-nick: Have you ridden this version?
  • 4 0
@heatproofgenie I’ve ridden the new LCR2, it’s an absolute weapon
  • 1 0
@sportstuff: Nice. I'm very interested in it as a potential Spire replacement but have not read many ride impressions or reports about it other than all the initial press.
  • 17 1
Pure bike porn there fingering the down tube orifice.

Wait until you have to grease BB shell threads

Interesting that he has gone down to a size medium with a 50mm stem. In the GMBN bike check before Finale he was on a large with a 40mm stem. With +/- reach cups and stem change there is only 5mm difference. I wonder if these trails are way tighter and the shorter wheelbase is more desirable at this race.
  • 4 0
Bikes with lots of geo and reach adjustments make so much sense for enduro where each race has different terrain. Choosing a shorter or longer wheelbase and preserving your geo with different stem lengths sounds like such a cool idea to me.
  • 3 0
@90sMTBEnjoyer: It's probably different for pros, but my riding would be (even more) all over the place If I was changing geometry every now and then. I need the better part of a year to get in tune with a new bike and even a change of a 5mm spacer requires a few rides for me to adjust. They do ride a lot though and spend way more time setting up their equipment, so it could be different for someone at their level.
  • 12 0
GMBN video was shot a few months ago. I actually rode this set up in Finale and loved it. Reach adjust cups make the difference between medium and large less drastic and not as jarring a change as you would think.
  • 3 0
With what seems like an emergence of remote lockouts on rear shocks, it looks like Cannondale knew what was up in the early days of enduro with the Diad shock. Aside from it being a pull shock, functionally it was pretty clever for the use case.
  • 2 0
I've been outta the EWS rules loop for a while - so what bike parts must remain original throughout the race? I see sticker on the front triangle, rear triangle, fork, assuming shock. I think wheels need to remain in-tact too? What other parts can't be swapped out? Derailleur, tires?
  • 3 0
Omg it's the same design of BB shell/main pivot intense tracer has! We are a lot of tracer owners experiencing tolerance issue causing play...I hope they did a better thing...
  • 1 1
I doubt it's a tolerance issue. Do you have a torque wrench and understand how the new Tracer works?
  • 1 0
@oldejeans: Sure it is when you can see the shell twist in the frame! bikes.com/fr-intl/products/altitude-c-frame-24 see that shell same shape on non-drive (drive side on tracer) side that suppose to not move on front triangle female hole! SU AND RIDE
  • 1 0
@Clem-mk: I torqued and thread locked the nds collar to the bb shell, and then torqued up the ds BB shell. No movement since.

Intense have omitted this.key bit of info from their manual. The NSMB guys found the same issue as you.
  • 1 0
@oldejeans: anyway that kind of triangular interface between the bb shell and the front triangle doesn't do the job! I manage to add a layer of tape to limit the play... it shows how too much room it has on ds.
Defenetely not a bike to ride in mud too but it's an other part of discussion Wink

I've just put a fox coil on my bike and I absolutely love the way it feels so far, but the one thing I don't like is having to reach all the way down to turn the pedal switch. They need to make a cable actuated RAD damper for us mere mortals.
  • 1 0
There used to be a remote lockout version of the Super Deluxe Coil but they didn't bring it over to the current generation so I'll bet it wasn't very popular
  • 1 0
@boozed: wasn't it a hydraulic lockout? I think Isabeau Cordurier was running one for a while. IMO a cable lockout option would be so good.
  • 1 0
 @90sMTBEnjoyer: It was cable actuated
  • 2 0
TRP seems to have some of the worst cockpit integration in existence. The fact that a TRP shifter AND brake have to be mounted separately is comical.
  • 3 0
Brake a shifter integration is pointless asthetics. You get much more adjustment from separate mounts.
  • 2 0
I use Shimano band clamp shifters with my Shimano brakes because the range of angle adjustment offered by I-Spec EV is insufficient.
  • 1 0
Shimano chain with the TRP drivetrain, curious about that choice since that drivetrain was optimized with KMC chains and I wonder if the chainring is compatible with hyperglide+.
  • 5 2
Always gotta double take at this bike because it does not look like a RM.
  • 1 0
Remi's such a Yoyo On frame size, he said he was riding a large only this year in the short reach. Guess he decided a proper sized frame for his height was better...
  • 13 0
Never let em know your next move. That GMBN video was shot a few months ago but just came out before Finale. The good thing with the reach adjust cups is that jumping between sizes isn’t as drastic a change as you think. And yes. I play around alot but its all in the name of speeeeeeed.
  • 1 0
 @remrem: fair play Remi.
  • 5 4
I love Rocky. I have a 22 Altitude. I'm interested in their LC2R or what not. The colors are horrible this year. They need to respond to my suggestions on instagram.
  • 1 0
Showing my age here but I had a 2013 Altitude and loved it. Looking at the new one I might just be tempted again minus the gold.
  • 1 0
The smatters of gold on other components polishes the colour-scheme turd only slightly. Back to the drawing board Rocky Mtn - those colours do not go together.
  • 2 0
Would love to have it but probably won’t ever pay $4,000 for a frame lol.
  • 1 0
Beats the $4800 Yeti wants for SB160!
  • 2 0
They’ll be on sale for 2500 in six months
  • 1 0
@heatproofgenie: kinda. A Yeti is like a BMW or a Mercedes. Norco is a Nissan for close to the same price.
  • 1 0
 @succulentsausage: with a jatco transmission?

 Go Remi!

My good old LC2R Slayer looked much better than this thing IMO. Just a personal taste though...

And the comments didn't disappoint ~ All the emo color haters ... Everything MUST be black ... black is the ordained color of all things MTB, if not black it's sacrilege and thou shalt be cast to the pits of black ... black black black I miss the 90's when there was some character involved and it was encouraged to not take things so seriously ... seriously... black
  • 1 0
Gold black green....don't know what to say. Very uncoordinated color. Should have gone black then we can talk.
  • 17 16
He rides for Santa Cruz, now?
  • 4 6
Hahaha love the down votes. Sensitive Rocky fans???
  • 1 1
Do not enjoy this color scheme at all, but I am so relieved that it doesn't have an orange SLS spring
  • 1 0
What is that doodad attached to the brake caliper?
  • 1 0
Saw that too, not sure but I zoomed in and it has a Fox logo on it.
  • 4 0
My guess is it's some sort of bump or position sensor for the shock, given the logos.
  • 2 0
I assume it has something to do with the electronic suspension. Maybe a speed sensor, or something to tell the suspension when he's on the brakes.
  • 1 0
 accelerometer?
  • 2 1
 Flux capacitor
  • 1 0
Who makes that frame storage wrap??
  • 3 0
That's Rocky's version that comes with the bike.
