As a parent, it’s so easy to see the golden days as being behind us. Looking to an uncertain future is unnerving. Being cyclists we get so much energy and fulfillment from playing hard outdoors.
Growing older makes you wonder,

bigquotesWill I be too busy to keep riding?
Will my body allow it?
Will there be space in my life?

photo

In the end it’s just a bicycle. A hobby that ought to give way when the demands of adulthood or parenthood summon.

…or is it something more?
bigquotesA big part of taking care of your family is taking care of yourself, and we believe that cycling does just that. It brings balance, friendships, and endorphins.

Cycling is part of our being and we hope to never let go.

We’ve found that sharing our passions with our children has opened up a box of answers. A box of new adventures, and of friendships. It helps us dwell less on the past and more on the golden days to come. The days when we can ride as a family. The days when our children will create those golden memories for themselves. Experiences they will hold onto into their adult years.

In becoming parents we’re not losing part of ourselves. Rather we are gaining something much greater. Our love for riding is being shared and multiplied.

bigquotesSo, no — we don’t plan on slowing down. Toss on a Mac Ride and keep the good times rollin’.

You absolutely can keep riding as a parent and pass that joy along to your kids. All you gotta do is keep yourself away from the draw of climbing the job ladder into a 50-60 hour per week job, and keep yourself from keeping up with the Joneses.

Spending more, and needing to make more money, and in turn accepting higher-paying and more demanding jobs that eat away at your free time, is the #1 reason I see people lose all their "play" time. And it is Not. Worth. It.

This. I got turned down for a more senior position that would've been a 10% pay increase and they hired someone externally instead. At first I was bitter about it but I quickly realized that guy has way more responsibility, a.k.a., stress, worse for his mental and physical health, and has to put in more hours to boot. He gets the weekend calls and texts. Now I have more time to ride and spend time with the family with lower stress and better health.

But how will I afford that carbon stumpy??

100% agree. I fell into that trap out of fear of financial insecurity and it’s one of the great regrets of my life. I can now afford that carbon stumpy, but time is ultimately the greatest commodity. No job will fulfill you like meaningful relationships, especially family, and you the time to invest in that.

I was working a soul crushing tech job that was paying me an absurd amount of money. About a year ago, I decided to become a firefighter and now I work one 48 hour shift per week. Guess what I’m doing with all that time off? Yup! Riding bikes and hanging with my boy. Priorities.

I had a Mac Ride for our second son. It was such a blast to have him on the bike with me. The conversations during the ride were great and he loved every second of the ride. I so wish I would have had it for our first son.

I had limited steerer on my bike so I couldn't install a 10mm spacer for a macride and got a Shotgun instead. Not as elegant a solution by any means, but still so much fun to ride with the little one. You'd be surprised at how much you can still ride comfortably too. No airborne stuff but a lot of blue trails are still fair play if your kid is comfortable.

Wish they had these when my kids were younger. I think my 11 yo is probably too big.

Agreed, the Mac Ride is an elegant solution. I was so surprised at how natural it felt to ride with my kid the first time. So freeing to be able to trail ride instead of babysit!

@n8dawg82 , my first daughter never cared about it, for her is just a method of transportation, same with the balance bike, so dont take too much to heart if your first son didnt get to experience it.

My second daughter loves it, amazing moments for sure.

I totally agree about the conversations! Had one for my second child and he loved it! He'd often ask to help me brake and shift too which was fun for him but also helped him understand how it all worked... very intimate way to explore the trails. I'm sure your little guy will be on a towhee in a couple years... don't worry the conversations don't stop then!

@Narro2: all about the kid. In 2000 I had 2 bmxers and one brat. Now I got 1 DH nut and 2 pain in the asses. Only one kid liked the seat and he's the DH nut

It’s so great… my son didn’t turn out to be a huge fan of riding it on trails, but the Mac ride has become our primary transportation to parks, restaurants, pools, other peoples houses etc etc. really nothing better than cruising around with your kid

@calarco68: nice, hopefully my youngest turns out like your kid regarding bikes. cheers!

@Narro2: Just a note. I pushed My 1st one way to far into BMX racing from 5 -14. We did all the travel and I thought he enjoyed winning all his motos. Well, It was me enjoying the wins and he was doing the races to make me happy. So I learned with my other 2, not to push them but let them experience the races. And race if they wanted too. Turned out my oldest liked my past passion of swimming and became a captain on the HS swim team. A lot of give an take...enjoy the ride it will be a wild one.

Great product for sharing the love with young riders. You'll find the golden era of biking comes and goes throughout your life. Don't just think of it as a one-time moment or season when you were young strong and riding well. It also comes when you watch your kids take hold of the dream and they realize their golden era, or as I'm finding as a grandfather helping grandkids going to the BMX track for the first time and giving pointers while holding the back wheel between you knees. You have many golden seasons to look forward to. Not to mention friends for life as the bikes tie our friends to our families. Great product article, makes me see the big picture.

I've been mountain biking since the mid 90s and my MacRide is the most fulfilling piece of kit I have ever purchased.

 Couldn't agree more.

I've got a MacRide, it's just as great as you think it would be. I started riding with my son at ~ 18mo on neighborhood streets, he could handle normal trails at ok speeds by 2yo, and we can ride almost anything except jumps at 3+. Arm strength to control his upper body is the main factor for him. He's currently almost 4 and is approaching being too big for it, he's big enough that pedaling is getting awkward, plus he's into riding his own bike at this point. The main thing you need to be ready for is explaining to other people what it is - often. That and all the photos people will be trying to take of your beaming giggling toddler.

Can agree with all of this. Especially the beaming, laughing toddler part. Thanks for the comment, Matt!

That was a great video! My daughter's mama and I have traded Mac Ride mid-ride many times, and heck, we would even leave it at pre-school in the bushes in the morning so the other parent could then ride kiddo home.

We started with the Mac Ride around 2 y/o, and still use it at 5 y/o, though realistically our time with it probably will end in about another year.

Man, the Mac Ride has been an invaluable tool for us, would HIGHLY recommend! And yes, I paid retail for ours!

Anybody who rides and has small children needs one of these. Its a blast to take the little one out and I get to go for pedals when I'd otherwise be unable to.

This is one of those rare products that not only is designed well but makes your life better (if you have small children). My 2 year old loves our mac ride and it’s super fun riding with him. I’d strongly recommend this to anyone with an appropriately sized child.

Nice work Christian! While out in SLC for vacation my wife would shuttle my 2 girls, my son (2.5 years old) and I up to the top of corner canyon almost daily. My little guy when riding at home on the mac-ride, or while watching any biking video he asks if it's the "black trail" referring to Levitate trail as it's the one trail I wouldn't take him down and he was fixated on it as I told him it was too hard for us to ride together haha
  • 2 0
Thanks, Jonathan! I haven't taken J on Levitate but he'd probably love it haha

@christian-peper21: I think we might need to invent a seat belt for that! lol

I don’t know why but this video made me very emotional. Especially when his son was running up to get on the bike. Beautiful thing to see

Thank you for saying! It was special to put together, especially with the accompanying words.

Awesome! Nice to finally see Christian and my brother (for a second) on pinkbike haha. We all know it is time to hit the hip with the cargo aboard

Hahaha can't say either of us would be ready for that jump

From one who didn't find the passion until later in life, let's not forget that children can also help parents learn to love biking and improve their skills. Thanks Christian, for your coaching, mentoring and patience!

Some of my best days ever on my bike in my life have been rolling down a green trail with my boy on my toptube or skiing the magic carpet hill at the ski resort, honestly, best times ever. Love these products.

i have used a Mac Ride with my kids great product. Worth every penny.
  • 1 0
One of the best purchases I ever made.

(Maybe not to common-sense pro-tips after using this with my third kid: watch out for little knees on tight switchback turns and make sure their shoes clear the tire when the fork is compressed and bar is turned. Also, try and remember hard and sudden compressions can bring their faces close to the bar and to be careful with really hard and sudden stops.)

One more whole hearted recommendation for one of these top tube seats (I've got the older kids ride shotgun version). Such a great way to spend time with the kids. One of my favorite memories is grinding up steep fire roads with my son yelling "go faster daddy go faster!!". I'm going as fast as I can buddy!

Now I've got an Early Rider bike for the 4 year old and the 2 year old gets the top tube seat. You can catch me out here pushing one kid up the hills with the other on the top tube.

Ive got one of these seats as well and my 2 year old daughter absolutely loves it! Awesome video Christian Smile
