Iago Garay Suffers Brain Aneurysm at Pietra Ligure

Iago Garay shared a terrifying incident on his Instagram earlier today from his weekend at Pietra Ligure. What started as a normal race day ended up requiring two surgeries to treat an aneurism in his brain. We are so relieved that he is resting, doing well and expected to make a full recovery.

bigquotesOn Saturday the 3rd I started my day in Pietra Ligure like any other one. I felt quite relaxed and ready for a big day ahead. I remember climbing to the second stage motivated and in good spirits. It started quite well and I could tell I was going slightly faster as I was getting closer to the edge. I was enjoying that feeling. As I got somewhere halfway down it I suddenly started noticing something was a bit off. My ears started buzzing and sort of popped...

At [one] point it all became quite a blur, I couldn’t really control much my bike but eventually made it to the bottom. All I could do was lay on the floor and go through what was the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. I was lucky enough to have a great team of medics nearby and in less than an hour I was at the neuroscience emergency room in Pietra Ligure hospital were they found out I had an aneurism in my brain.

I needed two surgeries during the weekend and another one two days ago, but so far the doctors are positive I will make it out 100% and back into a normal life. I must stay another week in the hospital under close surveillance to make sure everything develops correctly, the spirit is getting better little by little and I’m really looking forward to going outside soon...

 That is gnarly, so lucky he was treated so quickly, could have been much worse. It is a surreal feeling to go through something like that, I had a stroke at the age of 34 and was not expecting it whatsoever. I was a half mile from the ER and got there fast. Full recovery and happily living a healthy life. As it is happening you have no idea what is going on and everything is so confusing and scary, completely out of control feeling. Glad he's okay and wishing Iago a speedy recovery and no further complications. Very interested to see what caused it.

 Thats tough! Did you ever figure out what caused the stroke?

 Good friends dad had the same thing happened during intercourse in his 50's. He knew something was wrong with his brain and had his wife put him in the tub and filled with cold water and ice till paramedics got there. That single action of getting his body chilled down helped save his life according to doctors. It's an important step of your able to do it, even ice packs on the back of the neck is better than nothing. When dealing with a concussion, as soon as the person is awake start putting ice on back of the neck and getting them cooled down as quickly as possible. It will help fight off inflammation occuring in the brain. It may help lower your heart rate in hopes to lower blood pressure a touch and help with your blood carrying oxygen. I'm not a DR and this isn't medical advice. Simply first aid techniques picked up over a lifetime of learning and helping injured riders including myself.

 @MikeGruhler: I didn't actually know this. Thanks for the info.

 @danielfloyd: Decided to look into it further, my knowledge is a collection of personal experiences with myself and about 5 others who got knocked out. As well as collecting bits and pieces over the years about stroke patients and ice baths. Here's a link I just found to a study from NZ I believe, showing positive results for icing after head trauma. biomedres.us/pdfs/BJSTR.MS.ID.003639.pdf

 @MikeGruhler: I had a vagal response last time I donated blood. Started losing my eye sight mid conversation with the nurse less than a half pint in. Tissue around my eyes became flushed and gray. They sat me up immediately and iced the back of my neck with cold packs. Eye sight returned within seconds. Also not an MD, and realize this is a different neurological situation, but can vouch for that action in my circumstance.

 @MikeGruhler: Very cool. Thanks.

 @abotchway: It was a cryptogenic stroke, so unknown cause but through a litany of blood tests and a bubble study (injected agitated saline and watched the heart) they deduced it was from a Patent Foremen Ovale (PFO) or a hole between the two chambers of your heart. (www.pennmedicine.org/for-patients-and-visitors/patient-information/conditions-treated-a-to-z/patent-foramen-ovale#:~:text=Definition,after%20a%20baby%20is%20born.) Got a PFO occluder implanted in my heart to plug the hole. Now taking daily 81mg aspirin to keep the blood thin.

 @hittheshowers13: Oh wow dude! that is some interesting stuff! im about 2 weeks away from graduating paramedic school and we were actually talking about that exact issue just the other day, specifically the foramen ovale not fully closing off after birth. I'm very glad to hear you're doing okay though. Wish you the best of luck!

 @danielfloyd: no problem, it works really well. Snaps you out of the hazy fishtank vision feeling almost instantly. Especially in FL summer time heat when you're already about to die anyway.lol

 Best wishes my man. And for all athletes out there experiencing tramutic brain injury, I encourage you to explore the potential of psychedelics to help treat them.

 Having lost two people to aneurysms, one of which was only at 75% of their original brain capacity for the remainder of their life until they had a second, seeing someone survive one and come out at 100% is incredible.
