5 Things We Learned from the 2022 Fort William DH World Cup

Pinkbike Racing s very own Aimi Kenyon took home her first podium on home soil.

Amaury is on his way to being the new king of Fort William

After a three year break from Fort William and some tough injuries in between, it was an amazing performance from Amaury Pierron to take his second win in a row this season and a huge third consecutive win at Fort William. Amaury now becomes the second male rider to ever win more than two times at Fort William as he closes in on Greg Minnaar's seven wins.

Since 2015 only two men have won at Fort William, with both Amaury and Greg taking three back-to-back wins each. Interestingly we also saw Amaury Pierron swap back to a full 29er setup for Fort William after taking his win in Lourdes on a mixed-wheel bike.
Job done. 2 from 2 for Amaury Pierron in 2022.

Nina Hoffmann could be a threat for the rest of the season

Backing up a massive win of over seven seconds at the preceding British National race there was plenty of attention on Nina Hoffmann to see if she could keep her speed up on the tricky course. Come finals day she held down an impressive run, placing first at every split and pulling almost four seconds ahead of series leader Camille Balanche. With her win in Fort William Nina ends an almost two-year gap since her first World Cup win in Maribor and becomes the first German to win at Fort William. With a decent confidence boost from Fort William it will be interesting to watch if Nina can carry this momentum into Leogang.
Hoffman out the gate and onto the gas towards her second WC win.

The course is as brutal as ever

After adding some extra gravel to smooth out the course following the British National race there was a worry that the Fort William course had been made easier for the World Cup. Come the race weekend and this was proven wrong as the always tough and technical Fort William track provided plenty of carnage with broken riders and bikes. Across the weekend we saw Loic Bruni, Jess Blewitt and more taken out on the Scottish rocks.

Throughout the event we saw plenty of riders puncturing but more unexpectedly there were quite a few drivetrain issues with riders hitting the bottom of the course with no way to pedal to the finish. We believe this could be because of big holes opening up on track in the rocks and if riders were caught off line there was a chance for some big damage to bikes in the compressions. In finals we saw the likes of Loris Vergier, Bernard Kerr and more taken out with drivetrain issues.
Local lass Mikayla Parton doing the business in her home town. 8th place and an experience she ll never forget.

Jackson and Jordan almost top in Elites

Jordan Williams and Jackson Goldstone were the clear favorites heading into Fort William but once racing began things couldn't have been closer between the two flat-out young riders. Jordan took the first victory with the fastest run in timed training before Jackson fought back with the top qualifying time. On finals day the British rider came out on top at his home race by just 0.038 seconds over the almost five-minute course.

As well as an incredibly close race between these two final year Elite riders both of their times would have fallen inside the top six in the Elite Men's race. While it's arguable that the course was running slightly slower later in the day, it was still not easy conditions-wise in the morning for Juniors. It's also worth mentioning that third place Junior Remy Meier-Smith would have placed 12th in the elite as well; the future of DH is looking bright.
Jordan Williams was very at home with the weather. He d take the win by a very small margin over the current world champ.

A handful of top riders didn't make finals

Interestingly we saw plenty of big names miss out on finals in Fort William, a sizeable lineup including Sam Blenkinsop, Baptiste Pierron, Chris Grice, Neko Mulally, Brook Macdonald and Aaron Gwin all didn't qualify. The Fort William course is always a tough one for riders to master and last weekend seems to have caught out more of the top riders than normal. After such a long break from round one and another few weeks until round three riders will definitely find it tough to have to end their weekends short after qualifying.
AG goes to war on the turn on which he encountered a landmine back at the 2019 race.

More things:
• It was a great weekend for Pinkbike Racing with Aimi Kenyon taking 3rd in Junior Women, Jackson Connely 12th in Junior Men and Ben Cathro securing an amazing 24th in the Elite Men's racing.
• One of the biggest surprises of the weekend was seeing Rachel Atherton back between the tape at World Cups. While she didn't race it was awesome to see her back.
• The venue for the 2023 World Champs has been revealed to be Fort William as part of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow and across Scotland.
• Gracey Hemstreet is continuing to be a big threat in the Junior Women's racing as she took a second back-to-back win in Fort William.
• Kade Edwards is a beast as after crashing in finals went on to throw down some wild tricks on the motorway section's big jumps.

My favorite (sub) line of this whole article: "Aimi Kenyon taking 3rd in Junior Women, Jackson Connely 12th"... that would've put Ami at 13th in the women's elite and Connely just behind Luca & Dakota (51st+) or so in mens elite.

That's effing amazing really. Here we have the Right Amount of Stupid - PB - with their not-legendary-but-legendary Grim Donut, Levy, Kaz, and the whole Reject Crew - and their very 1st season, 2nd race, the Juniors are murdering - and Cathro didn't do too bad either...

Most of '5 thing we learned" above pretty obvious really, but the PB crew, coming outta nowhere upped numerous pro riders, entire BIG teams, and many longer-time riders out there. In the end, its all just fun and doesn't have to be taken too seriously but this is really one of those major underbelly stories that's not really getting trumpeted (in my view). Congrats PBR - this is just cool as hell the more I think about it. So when is PB gonna do a fundraiser / kickstarter for us to help pay for the team?

I thought it was pretty cool to watch Connor Feardon ride a dang Enduro bike to 18th place...

Taking nothing away from Amaury who deserves all the hype he is getting and then some--but 3 wins is a long damn way from "closing in" on Greg "King of Ft. Bill" Minnaar's absolutely ridiculous tally of 7 wins... I'd say finishing top 10 in the deepest field of WC racers ever at the age of 40 suggests that Greg will keep his throne a while longer.
  • 8 0
Well each time you win one, technically you are closing the gap hahaha. But I agree, Greg is really far in front and on another level in Fort Bill + He shows no signs of slowing down !

Haha that's the first thing I thought, how is 3 closing in on 7 FFS!

Gwinn could walk away from racing, and still be one of the greatest ever. It sucks that with every poor performance he has now, takes some of the shine off what he did before. I'd love nothing more than to see him competitive, it'd be great for him and Intense. But right now, Intense was a better team with Dean and Jack.
  • 11 0
Its kind of the same for Gee, was once great, still great, but hasn't been that competitive for a while now. Despite his injury last year. I still like to watch bot Gee and Aaron race.
  • 6 0
Didn't Gwin flat during qualifying? He certainly isn't on pace to be a podium threat, but missing the qualifying mark here seemed more bad luck than indication of where he's at.
  • 4 0
@moutnbiker: Gee has been producing amazing content outside of racing though, his freeride edits as well as participation in the Red Bull streams/analysis not to mention Dfyi Bike Park... so even if he's not a consistent top 20 WCDH guy anymore he's doing a lot around the scene... the painful part with Gwin is he appears to be dedicated purely to race results (his own words, "Going for Six") but is just waaaay off the pace. Yes he flatted in qualies, but his splits are down in the 30s?

How does it take the shine off? Because you're so shallow that a champion not winning therefore becomes not a champion in your eyes? What a simplistic view of performance. You think Bryant made every 3-pointer he went for? Bolt won every race he ever ran? Absalon won every xc race he ever entered? Of course not, there's downs, there's learning new bikes, new people, age, life, other priorities. Doesn't mean he's not a champion and won't be again. Maybe take your Instagram instant goggles off understand that some things in life are very hard to achieve and very hard to maintain.

@danlovesbikes: Dan, it’s interesting what people read, and what people don’t read. And I think you chose to focus on the negative here. And I meant the part when I said I’d love nothing more than to see him on too again. And was my comment critical of him, or of the short memory people have of him? Maybe next time you ask me to clarify, instead name calling? I’d be happy to have a discussion with you.

@Bleeder: you wrote it brother. If you don't want people to call you out on dumb shit, don't think it, don't write it. Perhaps the problem lies with your communication skills, not mine..
  • 4 0
@danlovesbikes: I you’re just looking to argue online, how original.
  • 1 0
@Bleeder: not really. I just wanted to respond to your stupid comment. Perhaps your take away from this could be to view athletic performance and success in a more cerebral way, instead of the simplistic and reductive view you currently have. Good luck with the personal development.

 6. Gwin is going for six!!!

:'(

Why are you sad? He’s been out of it for a few years. Gwin is not Minnaar. He had a great run, but that is long past. Maybe it’s time to move on to content other than racing?

@snomaster: I'm sad because there are bell ends like you in the world, and it makes me realise that people are just really, really dumb. So that's why I'm sad dumb dumb, because you're dumber than a rock, dumber than dumb dumb McDumb from Dumbsville.

I’ve been waiting for this the whole time as well. Love that data analysis. We have the data, but those graphs are cool.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I had the feeling that high-pivot bikes had exceptionally many dropped chains. Might be a disadvantage of high-pivot bikes or just the result of more bikes being equipped with an extra idler. Definitely something to take a look at in the upcoming weeks.
  • 6 1
Who dropped a chain aside from Kerr and Vergier? it's been a little while now so I forget who else dropped a chain. Vergier's on a high pivot, but Kerr is on a Pivot pivot. That alone doesn't say much at all.
  • 4 0
@edthesled: More importantly they both lost their chains after damaging their chainrings. This is just the result of low BBs rather than suspension layout.
  • 2 0
@edthesled: For the first time in a long time, all of the people on my fantasy team made the finals. However, two of them had drivetrain issues: Taylor Vernon and Antoine Vidal.
  • 6 1
@edthesled: 6 riders of the 39 featured on the Red Bull feed had drivetrain mechanicals, 3 different brands of drivetrains disabled.

@vetprowanab: Thanks for the info. Both of them are on different Supreme's so I'm still not sure that proves much other than that Fort Bill is a brutal track on bikes. I tend to agree with @Mugen in that this is likely more an issue with BB height than anything else.
  • 1 0
@edthesled: All the racers bikes essentially have the same BB height and it's been the same for over 10 years now, if not 15. The issue is the Fort William track.

Rachel Atherton back between the tape will be awesome.

I was at the event & so confused by the '23 World Champs announcement. Where did people expect they'd hold a worlds DH race in the city of Glasgow?

I feel like I heard this announcement before when the 23 bike champs was announced. Maybe I dreamt it.
