In the future questions such as:
'I have witnessed or experienced sexism or sexist language at an event'
should be:
'I have witnessed or experienced sexism or sexist language at an event in the last year'.
As it is at the moment, you will always have a legacy element of people who experienced the thing being asked at a point in history, and so will always answer 'yes' to this and doesn't make for good comparison.

Great point. I'll include this in the notes for next year's survey. Thanks.

@henryquinney: yep redo the assignment and bring it back to Tim's desk on monday
  • 7 0
 @browner: Haha. Yes sir!
  • 2 0
@henryquinney: Also, redo the question that asks how many men should qualify for the downhill men's final. There's an overlap in the answers between 20-40 and 20-60, so it's not really clear what those answers mean.
  • 5 0
Keeping both questions would provide a really interesting perspective on change (or lack thereof).
  • 2 0
@Mtmw: Indeed. Having both questions would keep the legacy data relevant, while also showing trends.

As a spectator I have a lot of problems, but worrying that there is a hidden motor in a DH bike is not one of them.
  • 16 3
~16% of respondents appear to believe people are using hidden motors @ wcdh? that's... something.

those covers on finn's & loics bikes? MOTORS UNDERNEATH.
  • 2 0
Very few tracks have sections where you could pedal. And if you have a motor on your bike in those sections it would be very noticable
  • 4 0
@BMXJJ327: Totally possible because the uphill/flat sections at a downhill event never have any fans or cameras. That's where they use the motors.
  • 11 0
A larger percentage of DH riders strongly agree that hidden motors are a problem than Enduro riders strongly agree that performance enhancing drugs are a problem. This is nuts!
@henryquinney this needs some further investigation
  • 3 2
@Fill-Freakin: You would be able to tell based off the splits. Especially when you could compare that to the flat section at Snowshoe which is entirely on camera. It would be obvious if someone gained a ton of time in one section, even if off camera, consistently and those sections were always uphill sections and that person's bike had a large downtube/bb area. Just doesn't seem feasible to keep something like that under wraps when there are so many eyes on the sport and so many athletes that would 100% call it out if seen. Especially for how closely PB and Vital watch things in the pits and all the forum commenters.
  • 2 0
@BMXJJ327: It wouldn't be a hidden motor if you could see it with a large bb area or down tube, there are some motors that sit inside the seat tubes that use a pinion gear to interface with the crank spindle directly. they arent very powerful but 100W of power is alot in a sport when less than a second can massively increase a persons sallary / bonuses.

In the enduro section, how can 46% of respondents think that performance enhancing drugs are a problem in the sport yet 71% of respondents think that in general the racing is fair?!
  • 2 0
 Pretty wack
  • 27 0
Because 25% of people think that racing on performance-enhancing drugs is fair....
  • 3 0
Maybe they think that EPO or other performance enhancing drugs doesn't really give an advantage.

If everyone is on the same juice it's fair, even if it's still a problem

There isn't a test for re-injecting your own blood and there hasn't been since lance admitted to it on Oprah's show. If there's no test, then Bill Burr's "our doper beat your doper" becomes the status quo for the sport.
Meanwhile all the normals on Strava can't figure out why their FTP isn't 400 yet.
Anytime I bring this up in the comments these basic, known facts about cycling cause some sort of tirade/chorus of "yes we can test", so I'll cite sources in advance.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22119492
"Autologous blood transfusions (ABTs) has been used by athletes for approximately 4 decades to enhance their performance. Although the method was prohibited by the International Olympic Committee in the mid 1980s, no direct detection method has yet been developed and implemented by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)."

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ajh.26078
"The re-transfusion of stored erythrocyte concentrates is particularly attractive to high-performance athletes as this practice improves their oxygen capacity excessively. However, there is still no reliable detection method available. "

We'll have competitive cycling when we have tests for doping.
  • 1 0
@Mtmw: "no direct detection method". Although indirect methods have been around for a long time. Essentially this means that as long as an athlete doesn't over do it, they can get away with it. But then it's not nearly the advantage it could be. I think the method involves counting white(?) blood cells and/or testing for blood pressure. If it's way out of whack then it's obvious what the athlete is doing.
  • 1 0
@Fill-Freakin: when there is an adjudicated adverse analytical finding from the biological passport, I’ll believe there might be some meaningful ceiling on blood boosting. To my knowledge it’s never stood up once in court arbitration sport (CAS) but I could be wrong.
  • 2 0
@Fill-Freakin: to paraphrase my undergrad physiology professor, the test is hematocrit level, which is apparently VERY difficult to get above, say, 50, without doping (exercise alone)...thus if it is over 50, it is very likely one is doping, and perhaps there are rules pertaining to a certain level. But in a game of grams and milliseconds, I would assume everyone is s trying to keep it right at the acceptable level.

Props to all the riders who took the survey--it must have taken a while to complete...also thanks to Pinkbike!

I was hoping they asked the freeriders “Helmets should have a visor” just to see if Nicholi answered the survey
  • 2 0
At least ask "glasses or goggles?". That way we'd know how many XC riders answered.

Here’s a self-centered question, because I love paying zero dollars for someone else’s hard work- Henry, are you planning on crunching all this data into a graph or graphs tracking changes through time?
  • 11 0
Haha - when James Smurthwaite and I decided to do the initial survey, I think we spoke about tracking coming in on its third iteration. That said, without James here at PB anymore I've found this survey very challenging without his journalistic rigor. So next year I would love to include some level of tracking - but I think we would need to get some external help with that stats etc. because I'm basically just a bike mechanic and video guy, and if we want to make it bigger/better/more insightful we'll definitely have to restructure how we approach it a bit. So how we do it I honestly don't know yet - but its certainly something we will talk about.

I’ve put my time in silicone valley helping some guy from South Africa become the next overlord. I hate spread sheets, and luckily never had to do more than data entry at the end of a shift.
But if you did use an Excel product, chances are good (someone) can extrapolate that mountain of data into graphs. They tell me it’s easy..
  • 3 0
@Untgrad: Tell me you don't actually know anything about technology in 4 sentences.
  • 1 1
 @suspended-flesh:
Who me? I know no nothing..
All I have left is big words and phrases like extrapolate and diminishing returns.
That being said, I know a thing or two about delegating tasks, which is more like what I did.
And I’d say in the case, it’s time for some starry eyed interns! Why waste resources crunching huge piles of data when you should be focused on sending tweets from Mars?

Interesting to see the weight of the results from "Performance enhancing drugs are a problem in enduro racing" flip from 2021 to 2023 data. I'm sure there's some of this going on behind the scenes, but kind of reassuring to see that the results from this and the other disciples trend to this being less of an issue.

Has there been any reports of mechanical doping in enduro racing?
Never heard of a mini electric motor in enduro racing….
Please correct me if I missed something
  • 3 0
 And in DH?!

I tried to sneak my YZ450 into one of the races but somehow they noticed.

@bigtim: in pro downhill races, the chainsaws hide the sound
  • 1 0
13 people agree it's a thing across the full survey. I guess if they think it's a thing, then whoever is doing it isn't caught, because like you, I've seen zero reports of it actually happening. But I'd find it unlikely that many people think it's a problem, and someone not at least given it a crack in a practice or something...
  • 1 2
I hang around with my ebike at the midpoints on the uphill track of local enduros and offer twoonie tows to competitors.

@bigtim: At least it cost less than a current high-end pedal bike.

I think some of the pro's and Henry are trolling us

@gnarnaimo: I was wondering exactly that..

Some questions are phrased in a way that can easily be interpreted in different manners. For example, it could be that most pros think it's not a problem that people are taking performance enhancing drugs in DH racing.
  • 1 0
Wait a minute, in Section 8 - Slopestyle & Freeride, you missed this question:
“Mechanical doping”, using a hidden electric motor, is a problem in Slopestyle & Freeride.

  • 2 2
Nobody really wants to see that even though quite a few riders already have Only Fans pages.

There is a mistake in percentage for the 100% answer for "What proportion of your total expense comes from sponsors?" In junior sec. Yeah I know, who read that anyway?
  • 2 0
Amended. Thank you. My eyes were square by the time I was proofing and that's an example of it! Ha. I've corrected it to reflect the data, which I just double checked. Thanks
  • 2 0
If any expense comes from sponsors, I'd drop them as a sponsor. If you're sponsors are costing you money, they're not really helping much are they?
  • 4 1
That’s cool, can we know advent calendar winners now?
  • 1 0
No to skinsuits ? Most people these days are racing in body hugging race attire, not a lot of difference really.

Looks like much more of the top mtb pros are fine ebikes than PBers. Wink
  • 3 1
Yeah, the ones that ride them because they're getting too old to post competitive times in the real races.
  • 1 0
@Fill-Freakin: Says the guy who can't even come close to the pros competitive times. You should have more respect for the pros.
  • 1 1
@tacklingdummy: Are you Strava stalking me? But yeah, it's hard to come close to ebike times, specially as I get on in my years. Still, it's flattering when Strava sends me a message "are you sure this wasn't meant to be an ebike ride?" after logging a ride, lol!
  • 1 0
@Fill-Freakin: I'm sure the stalking is the other way around. Wink
