Okay, i have to agree that they do have quality control issues, but how do you connect a brake set to an aneurism? And how is an aneurism over priced junk? Haha
@boostin - i would! Been on several different Avid brakes and all of them have been beautiful. Elixirs, Juicys - all have been excellent! I've seen bad Avid brakes, of course, but mine have been good.
fair enough. i've had juicy's before and they were good. i've had an elixir though which came on my bike and would never ever consider it even if it was given to me for free.
i've had the latest codes and I'm now running an xo. The Codes worked quite well untill master cylinder seals started sucking air in. The brand month 2 months old xo on the other hand hasn't seen a good day yet. Loose lever mechanism and leaking pistons. My xt's on the other hand have been great so far.
Elixirs are horrible, but my codes are awesome.. you just need to be lucky not to get the ones with error..quality control destroys their experience in making brakes.. and it's a shame.. I personally amnnot against avid brakes, but they need to work on their quality if they want to earn some more money.
Avids aren't that bad, but they are WAY overpriced. I just googled xtr brakes and there are plenty of people selling them for under $200. Theres no way that the elixor 9 carbon is $50 better on super duper sale
Those zees for $125? I'm gonna ask the wife for some money....
All this Avid hate is BS. My elixirs are flawless, on both my bikes. I don't trust 90% of these comments about Avid. If you own a Chevy, you'll talk sh*t about Ford. My elixirs are perfect, so maybe your bike shop sucks. My brothers shimano's absolutely suck, but a friend with the same bike & brakes, his are perfect. But you don't see me slamming shimano's, because I have a feeling it's the shitty LBS where my bro bought his at.
I've had several Elixirs, and they were awesome until the 5's had a bursted line (yep... that apparently can happen) which got me a free replacement to some 7 SL's which were awesome until I sold the bike they were on. I do think Avid brakes are a little pricey and definitely have some quality control issues but they are good brakes when they work. I'd still only ever buy Shimano, I've always had good experiences with them!
My SX Trail came with two ELIXIR R brakes, after almost two years my front brake started leaking inside the piston, so the oil won't leave the system, but I still become brakeless after a while riding, discovering this issue cost me a full face helmet and some good days in pain... And I get them revised every six months, in fact my bike had just come from the bike shop when I crashed breakless...
Well being a bike tech there is nothing to do with a lbs...owning and repairing avids for years you can tell they are junk...shimano is better but not great either...
Hope brakes...my mono 6 are on there ninth full season of dh and still work and look great...I can still buy any single part fir then....super easy to bleed and always work....
once you go hope every thing else is inferior junk
Ive had some avid codes that came stock on my Glory and they work just fine, they have a nice touch and haven't started to leak or anything... ...yet (touch wood) only had to change the pistons in the rear caliper after year and a half of use, but I would never spend money on any more products from Sram, I have yet to have a good experience with them, buy shimano Zee best value for money ever.
My avids were always good, I've been riding juicys, elixirs and code r for some time and it's defenitly what I'm looking for in brakes, I'd never buy any other brake! I've been riding formulas and it's peace of crap, tried shimano zees and they are great, but don't feel like avids so I'll stick to sram brakes untill they really disapoint me
Hopes might be super reliable and powerfull enough, but are heavy, and the ergonomics of the levers are not to everyone's taste. In this Avid are far better than Hope - i don't think there's a person that's not happy with Avid's lever feel. Personally, i've tried a Tech V2 with a vented rotor of a friend of mine and didn't like it at all.
Each to their own, I agree. I've had hope c2, mini, 4 pot and tech 4's and all performed perfect for me. I prefer the finish too. I've also tried juicys that stopped working and the paint flaked on my codes. Why would I try avids again?
Depends where you play golf. The clubs can be pricey but $1000 set of clubs will last you 10+ years if you take care of them. If you don't mind playing municipal courses it's not that expensive but if you want to play at the really places you'll go bankrupt.
Someone explained sailing to me like this, "Just take a shower with your clothes on and the lights off and clog up the drain with ripped-up $100 bills"
Sailing is actually really fun, from what I've experienced. I have a little over 40 hours in a two person boat. It's not the thrill and adrenaline of biking, but it's very relaxing, and the water spray and mist on your body is really refreshing and just cool. I like the rock of the boat and overall it's pretty cool.
Comparing mtb to golf; pebble beach is $800 (approx) to play one 18h round. They'll never let me play Augusta, it's private. Yet, I can ride some of the best trails in the world for free. If you break your entertainment budget down to how much you pay per hour mtb gets cheaper the more you ride, while golf or motor bikes get more expensive. The cost per/hr (bikes/gear/mntc) for my family last year was near $24/hr (not including fuel), because all 3 of our bikes are less than 3 hrs old. But this year it should be near $14/hr and if I don't buy a 27.5 it will fall to $9 to $12 in 2015. Mtb is one of the best and least expensive ways to entertain yourself per hour, and think of all the other benefits as well.
I'm with you deadtime. A little more money to begin with. Unless your buying a member ship at a golf course. But once you have your bike it's cheap. Unless you do it like me. I have four bikes. LoL.
I won't be buying another soon though. Thanks to the big wheel rage (marketing mayhem). At 59 I'm not a fan of the 29 or the 27.5. That all manufactures are running to to stop having to replace tacoed 29" wheels.
yep! gunna drive local small shops out of business one of these days. there is nothing wrong with a good deal but there is such a thing as going to far also.
when your local LBS is run by idiots who fix things with ducktape and hammer, suddenly you dont have a hard time saving money online. (as long as you can wait)
If your local bike shop doesn't know what they are doing jumpman2334 than find another shop even if it means driving a long ways, (believe me it's worth it). Jenson usa is not a local shop anymore Hamncheez, it may have been at one time but it is a internet store that is internationally known. And there is nothing wrong with being a huge online store as they don't undercut small shops to much. I have had job offers from jenson however i could never make the switch from the local shop I work at to jenson. I am not saying that Jenson or any other online store is a bad store, however there is a such thing as crossing a line of going to far. In short there is fair competition in business and there is undercutting to the point of driving shops out of business, which shouldn't happen unless you want to start learning to do ALL your mechanical work and not have someone to turn to for help when you need it.
uh, no thanks. the next closest shop is 3 hours away (believe me, its not worth it).. between building everything on my own (even wheels), and having a certified bike mechanic in the house, we get sh!t done... and we also never overpay, or even pay MSRP for that matter because we buy online.. sounds like a win win to me
times are changing. and unless your LBS caters to pretty much exactly most of what their locals do, chances are they're struggling..
the sport is as expensive as you want it to be hamncheez you can spend 800 bucks on a bike or 8,000 but at the end of the day you are on your bike and having fun. And im not complaining. people who complain can complain all they want it doesn't matter (the ones who are complaining most likely have their spandex on to tight anyway)
Can we get some UK deal spotting going please makes me sad when it says cant ship to UK on those oakleys and all the ones in the UK are still rrp or near
Yeah the plastic feel is not nice! However! The breakaway style or the arms means that they don't break very easily! I've had mine sat on, stuck at the bottom of backpacks, shoved in pockets.. Any stress the arms pop off so resulting in no broken arm and useless glasses!!
Yeah the cost isn't relative to the quality of the glasses!
But i like them because if my lifestyle things get thrown around so having glasses that are rugged and able to take a few knocks etc!
Even if they give you the best price on the market, who wants avid brakes they are shit, im planning on getting shimano brakes because avid brakes have gotten me a thousand nightmares. (It was a shame that my bike came with avid)
1. they need bleeding every (two weeks) 2. The lever goes all the way to my grips after 3 to 4 bike rides 3. And they do not have good braking power 4. After a few rides when new they start making these sound that gets me annoyed
What model do you have? I have the elixir 9's and I haven't had to touch them since I bought them over a year ago. Happy with the power, a little bit noisy but I do have the metal pads in there so it's understandable.
The elixir 9 work awesome that is if you get a perfectly formed pair when buying sram as far as i have noticed its sort of a 50/50 chance of getting good brakes and getting some expensive nightmares, mine for example (codes) work great but I once had some elixir 1s and they where 40eur mor expensive than you basic shimano disc brake and twice as crappier
yeah man the thing is that i have 2 avid elixir 5 on my two bikes and they have been really bad but my dads got the elixir 7 and his brakes have been running really good but i have heard of many avid users that have issues with them
its been forever since ive bled my pre-taper bore code.. although it is worth noting that my friend and his dad both have a set of elixir 5s on their bike, and for whatever reason the rears have suddenly just died on them while we're out riding in our yard/track not too long ago. (not at the same time, but it happened to both of em)
I had 2 pairs of juicy 5 and one was good, one was bad. I own a set of elixir CR (2010) on my DH bike and I never thought brakes could be that terrible. Gotta bleed them all the time and and the lever feeling is inconsistent at best to the point that I decided to trash them and buy Zees when I hardly ever bin anything that isn't destroyed, so it tells how much of a pain they were. Got a set of 2012 elixir 7 on my AM bike and to be honest I always thought they worked well until I started doing some big mountain riding, the levers started being inconsistent too and now I'm having a hard time trusting them anymore. Almost splurged on a second set of Zees but I decided to bleed them instead as they were my least terrible avid set so far. If they start acting up again, it will be brake shopping time.
Avid is too much of a gamble. I like them when they work well but that never lasts long. I don't like talking shit about products because of one rotten apple but I think I've had enough bad experiences with avid now to see the big picture. I'm not sure if shimano is better but I'm done with avid that's for sure. Brakes are something you want to be able to rely on and Avid fails to deliver.
That is also happening with my elixir 5 PLC07 when i started using them they were good but after two weeks they started loosing power and I take them to the bike shop for bleeding every 2 to 3 weeks and the levers do not work fine, I want to put shimano zee on my bike but whats your opinion about them?
Haven't tried the Zees yet, I've been waiting on a good deal for a while before buying them so I only got them this winter but quite frankly, unless they end up completely failing while riding, I don't think it can be anywhere near as disappointing as the CRs they replaced.
I strongly agree with the first few comments, avid brakes are absolutely shite, good when they work but my god dont even think about bleeding them cause you will regret it. If your thinking of getting new brakes dont even consider avids theyre on offer for a reason and thats because nobody wants them.
Shimano XT's are the best value for money IMO, ok so slx get the trickle tech but when stops are involved you have to pay! Besides Avids look like something out the mid 90's 3 finger v brake era. Every bike I've bought with Avids have been sold off on my old bike.
Pretty sure that Gamma One Industries is a moto helmet. Unless it is somehow different than the one I'm staring at on my bed it its big & heavy. Great for a dirtbike though.
Ridden juicy 5's, juicy 7's, and several different years of codes with 0 problems. Codes are great, this coming from 260lb guy that puts them through there paces.
its like paying to give yourself a brain anurism!!!
Overpriced mass produced junk that cant hold a bleed
Those zees for $125? I'm gonna ask the wife for some money....
