Val d'Isère WC Course Walk

Oh, hai epic view. It looks like this no matter what direction you look in here.

photo

The view from the upper gondola of the town, the valley, the XC track and some of the Dh track. It's a riders paradise here with trails and lifts everywhere.

photo

You can see almost the entire track from the finish line and the pits. It's definitely an interesting layout here in France, no trees on the track to speak of and speeds are going to be insanely fast.

photo

A few of the steep, tight switchbacks, as seen from the chair.

photo

The start gate will be off the top of a building at the top of the Gondola. It's 3 drops right off the hop.

photo

First rock drop.

photo

Second rock drop.

photo

This hip is a couple of hundred meters out of the start and the landing will let you go as far as you want.

photo

Step up right after the hip.

photo

The landing looking back up to the hip.

photo

This is how tight most of the corners are here.

photo

Got Off camber? The weather is calling for rain. It could get wild.

photo

Yet another rock drop.

photo

S turn with a sweet drop line out of it.

photo

photo

photo

photo

This is steeper than it looks.

photo

Hey why not just launch off the roof of this shed and into the sketchiest landing ever?

photo

Corners rule.

photo

Close up of the shed drop. It isn't small and the landing is littered with loose rocks.

photo

The corners are filled with natural and less than natural jumps.

photo

The only "tree" section on the course. They don't come into play, but at least they look nice.

photo

Views everywhere you look here.

photo

This is a corner. Nice and smooth like.

photo

The final corner has a gnarly hole on the inside line. It is going to be interesting to see if anyone attempts to jump it.

photo

The last massive corner into the wooden sender is loose as can be and extremely off camber.

Watch some helmet cam action from the track

some of the track doesn't look much like a track, more like a path that some goats had trodden down in a grassy meadow that are now connected by race ribbons. this is going to be cool Smile

the girl in the yellow shirt 2nd to last picture..
  • 2 0
Looks more like a weekend of fun rather than a weekend of racing! Wish I was there!
  • 10 0
Looks like Needles's South African model girlfriend
  • 18 5
@Emerys - that's what the author of this article was referring to when he said, "...gnarly hole..." Smile
  • 8 2
am I the only one who had a dream with Hill on top of the podium?? other people were blurry, then I woke up Frown
  • 5 0
At first it was hard to see the flow in the track, when just looking at the pictures, but after watching the video I am convinced that it's going to be a good weekend!
  • 2 0
21st picture..... some bloke has her in his arms, looks like Minnarr but no other syndicate riders around him. Good luck to all the riders, nice to see a change of track, even if it's in Europe again
  • 69 10
"having seen the photos, this is anyones race"

Having seen past races, this is Gwin's race.
  • 3 0
so much gnarly off camber sections
  • 8 3
And if it rains, its Danny's race... if he's healed up.
  • 7 1
Hahahaha I love it "Having seen past races, this is Gwin's race", agreed. Oh and Danny's out for this WC, it's on his FB page.
  • 6 1
Agreed, looks like a track Gwin definitely can do very well on (a somewhat stupid comment though, he seems to do well on any track!), he'll probably rip those corners! Can't wait to watch the race.
  • 1 3
reminds me of sams run where he won but like wrecked and it started raining on him when all of the other fast riders had already gone in the dry. Hopefully same results this time eh? except for the wrecking part Smile
  • 3 1
Hill didnt win that race and it was in Champery.
  • 1 0
@ mtbrider02 www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIOzsX1dUl0 this is the race you were thinking of. It seems Gee was right with what he said at the end! I really hope we get some rain at this race cause it would be great for sam hill to take a win away from Gwin. Never rule out big Peaty though!
  • 1 0
oh yea that was what i was thinking of. idk why i thought he won, though its been a long time since that race i must have thought that his run was so awesome that he won
  • 36 1
 Hello Sam Hill!
  • 5 1
You said it, flat corners... no one else has a chance!
  • 3 0
 agreed
  • 3 0
 I was thinking that 2
  • 4 1
You are saying Aaron Gwin doesnt have a chance? Hah
  • 4 0
Blenkinsop is my dark-horse this week.
  • 1 0
I was thinking this has hill written all over it when I saw the helm cam, no reason gwin cant kill this though.
  • 1 0
definitely agree!! I reckon is he doesnt fuck up hill will be a very serious contender! the track looks nuts! SOOOO pumped!!!
  • 3 0
I'm thinking we could have ourselves a good old fashioned Hill and Peaty battle here. Minnar's in it too no doubt, and Gwin's the man to beat as always. Stevie's got balls of steel and this track looks fast and sketchy, so who knows there either. Going to be an exciting race.
  • 2 0
Wow...we suck! Not one of ANY of the above names in the top-3 today. All the same, that was a solid day of racing - as I only saw the final 5-or-so riders this morning, I'm freaking dying here waiting for THE REPLAY!!
  • 49 17
 "
Hickory Dickory Dock,
Val d'Isère has lots of rock.
The lift creeps up,
The riders rip down!
But no one can beat Gwin's clock.
  • 14 6
Ah c'mon. I was hoping for a lot more neg props than this by now. Are you guys asleep out there?
  • 14 3
+1 just to foil your plan! haha!
  • 2 0
Had to re read that last line...
  • 20 0
please be a camera on the shed drop and the s bend
  • 8 0
It's like they have used a time machine, looks like a crazy DH track from the 90s. I'll put my money on the old guys : Peaty, Minaar, Sick Mick and Mick Pascal if it rains, and Camellini or Gordianengo (if he wont win he'll go to the hospital :p) as outsiders. I'm dreaming of a wild car for Vouilloz, if there is one track for him this year this is the one!

But as usual Gwin should be strong enough to contest the win.
  • 9 0
I would give my left ball to see Peaty win one more time!
  • 2 0
Who needs a left ball :p?
  • 3 1
I'm pretty sure Vouilloz has left the WC circuit for a while now
  • 2 0
Crossing my fingers for Peaty!!! Hard year for him so far, he definitely is chomping at podium finish - gooooo Peaty!!!!
  • 10 0
there are no woods on the track... coverage should be good
  • 5 29
flag notthatfast (Jul 25, 2012 at 10:21) (Below Threshold)
i wouldn't count on it, red bull are hosting the coverage
  • 14 1
BLASPHEMY! You cover it then with all of your cameras and crew, oh wait, you don't have either. Don't hate on Red Bull for the coverage, it's free, convenient and replays throughout the day.
  • 6 12
flag notthatfast (Jul 25, 2012 at 11:35) (Below Threshold)
Freecaster were far better, they didn't miss out 70% of the competitors for a start.
  • 9 0
True, RED BULL needs better coverage - Freecaster was much better, more coverage, more racers. Just because it's free, (so was Freecaster except for worlds - which is nothing to pay for the whole season live!) doesn't mean we should be satisfied with mediocre coverage.
  • 3 0
the only thing that they are really fucking up is only showing the top 30, and not letting Rob say what ever he wants, i think they actually have 2 more cameras than freecaster did
  • 5 1
that's exactly it, they're not showing a great deal more track, but they're cutting out so much of the race and the commentary just isn't as good. Say what you want, I'd rather have freecaster back.
  • 3 1
Yeah, they put a muzzle on Rob - just ain't F@%*Kin' right!! And if they just show the top 30 - show us MOST of their runs!!!!!! At least a lot more than out of the gate "there he goes..... and "look at him at finish line!"
  • 3 0
Not sure why redbull would put a muzzle on rob. I mean I could see why perhaps but then I look at those "robs dirty business" webisodes, which are also produced/sponsored by redbull and the dude is as raunchy as ever.
  • 6 0
I hope world cup riders will like this track... In France, after several French DH Cups, the Val d'Isere track is called Val Misere which means Val Misery. The riders gave this name because there are no woods, no roots, no rock section, only one line to ride,... It's not fun... But OK, it's deep and spectators can watch riders from the bottom of the track.... We miss La Bresse... Normaly, it'll rain on Saturday and the sun will be back on Sunday...
  • 2 3
Who needs rock garden or trees xD ? Speed, speed and speed and big jumps that's all we need as a spectators lol.
  • 4 0
I don't disagree with you... But I'm asking why is it called Val Misere by the french riders ?...
I rode that track for the french cup in 2003 and it hasn't change a lot... But MTB has change a lot...
  • 2 0
You're right dude! Mountain bike has changed a lot but not always in the right way imo, look at (not the time Big Grin ) how stereotyped DH tracks are nowadays. I remember Big Bear, Kaprun or Mammoth, these were fast tracks and sometime I miss them! I'm not asking for more than one track like this in the season but you have to admit that can't be that bad to watch the fastest guys on the planet hitting this track.
  • 1 0
You are old school !! But I'm too ! ;-) You convinced me ! Maybe the new generation riders will be lost on that old school track (but I fear the coments after the race)... But I'm not sure if Gwin will not be the winner...
La Bresse was an old school track but it seemed to be more fun but that track was complete, with woods, different lines, rockgarden...etc
Pascal will be back in the top 10 this week-end (I hope) ---> www.pinkbike.com/photo/4738797
  • 1 0
Eh eh, I'm not certain that I convinced you, you have lived the good of days of DH so a part of you miss that kind of course too!

Anyway this is dope you in a middle of legends like Sainz or Pascal, thanks for sharing this picture, appreciated Smile .
  • 8 0
im going to this fuker friday im gonna be everywhere rattling an old frame for the english crew
  • 9 1
Yep, it's gonna be Smith or Hill's track to win it, if anyone pins it in rough stuff it's those two
  • 7 0
Brook MacDonald is always up for pinning the roughest shit around. I think he'll podium this weekend.
  • 1 0
My two favorite riders. Maybe smith will finally reach the top step. But then there Is hill with flat corners and off camber sections he could do good 2
  • 1 0
I was thinking smith or macdonald would be great contenders too, those boys go fast.
  • 8 0
hill is going to smoke everyone I've got a feeling heh Big Grin
  • 3 0
Watching this fellows' course run, all I could think was "WWGD" (What would Gwin do) in terms of line selection. What the heck is up with that roof-drop, it looks kind of full-90 to get on to it...? Anyway, I'm Canadian- GO SMITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 7 0
 really nice start gate Smile
  • 10 3
 Gwin! Win! America! Puppies!
  • 5 1
 You're forgetting one thing... Titties!
  • 2 1
 COUSIN! LET'S GO BOWLING!
  • 6 0
 wonder whose house that is...
  • 6 0
I'm counting on Gee to kill it tomorrow
  • 3 1
Is Gee racing? I heard he tore his ACL
  • 3 0
He won the british nationals sunday
  • 3 1
Really?? That's awesome!! Give him the boost he needs! Of course, Gwin won the US nationals Sunday too!
  • 2 0
Yeah Gee 1st, Josh Bryceland 2nd and Peaty 3rd.
  • 1 0
I wish I could see that race - any link to it that you know of? Why did I get neg proped? Just saying - I'm all for Gee to win!
  • 3 0
this track looks tricky, just as you get some speed going, you would have to try and take some pretty interesting corners. looks tough, cant wait to see what some of the times are on this puppy.
  • 11 0
First time I've ever heard a downhill track compared to a puppy, i like puppy's...
  • 4 0
love the track, because this is where mtb comes from: a trail in the mountain who cares if it seems to be "oldschool" there was great biking before generation berm and park
  • 2 0
Its wonderful to see a track on the WC circuit that isn't just another bermed up toboggan run with artificial rock gardens and well manicured kickers... everything looks rough and unkempt and super technical, the winner here will obviously still be Gwin, lets not get too excited, but 2nd place will be hotly contended, Petey always does well on the old skool technical tracks as he has decades of skill and experience, Sam Hill will be another one to watch for sure, not sure many of these new gen' younger riders will have ever seen an adverse camber corner before, everything has berms nowadays thanks to the inspiration of A-line... :-/
  • 2 0
looks like a real downhill track. awsome. but why can't these guys wear appropriate shoes on a course walk. with flipflops and sneakers in the mountains is ridiculous. looks like japanese tourists Wink
  • 1 0
Not read all the comments. No one seems to be considering the altitude. Is this going to play it's part in the outcome? Balls of steel for sure required but I'm thinking a big set of lungs is going to help. Time for gee to hop on to the top step?
  • 5 0
Drop off the shed half way down looks gnarly!
  • 2 0
Looks like people will probably miss that corner before it tho ! So tight from those shots
  • 3 0
Not just the shed, the whole course looks gnarly
  • 3 0
Unique track compered to the others so far. Looks suited for the power riders, exiting those tight tricky corners. Should spice things up i like it.
  • 4 0
Great to see some of the local Canadian kids over there in France. Go Squid.
  • 3 0
I have to agree. Sending two of our best guys to get WC experience on a whole new level. Go Sid Go Rob!!!
  • 2 1
What people are forgetting is that Gwin is going to play it safe, in order to make sure to capture a couple of points to win the Overall. Though Gwin playing it safe might just land him second placeSmile With this track and the weather this race is going to be about balls and tires not technical skills and conditioning.
  • 4 0
Going fast on this track it requires technical skills also. Does winning in kitzbuhel (the famous alpine ski race) is all about balls? Well maybe more than usual but not only Big Grin .
  • 3 0
"Does winning in kitzbuhel (the famous alpine ski race) is all about balls?"

With the skills they all have (alpine skiers in the WC)...yes it is...balls.
  • 2 0
it almost looks like the line around the shed is faster, you have to make a 90 degree right hander just to get on top of the damn thing. seems like you could just rip around the outside..
  • 2 0
yeah but the sheer speed you'd pick up after landing! (if you did actually land it, and not go OTB and pummel your face into the ground)
  • 1 0
Looks like an incredibly difficult track to carry speed through, some of the corners look so flat, as demonstrated by the helmet cam, that rider is undoubtedly a good rider, yet he slowed down massively on large parts of the track and lost momentum. Should make for an awesome race
  • 1 0
Looking forward to some footage of the racers rallying this track. Without seeing anything, I'd have to lean towards a rider with stellar handling-skills - basically any of the top-5 and a few fringe guys like Bryceland, Blenkinsop or Fairclough. Probably Gwin, Hill or Minnaar when all's said and done.
  • 1 0
I'm a bit in a doubt with this track: is it a level of a World Cup track? At first it looks like an amateur track, designed as it was the backyard track of your country house. I feel that there's not enough safety in too many sections. On the other hand it looks very technical: it is steep, lots of tight turns, different lines to choice in some important sections. With heavy rain it will turn into a nightmare but with light one I guess that the dusty terrain will gain grip.
I'm opinion it will the perfect track for riders like Hill, Fairclough and Smith. A race to watch, of course.
  • 1 0
I can't wait to watch this race, I did a ski season there years ago and it is awesome, super steep. I've never seen the place not covered in the white stuff and it looks dangerous!! Sam for the win or Steve smith.
  • 3 0
Gnarly race course. Steep and fast, but no dark trees or massive rock gardens. Can't wait to see the racing action!!
  • 4 0
the french sure know how to build a crazy downhill track!
  • 2 0
This looks like a test of the best. Its got terrain that isn't seen as much in other races and will push even the pros skill.
  • 5 1
 Track look's insane!
  • 3 0
If it rains things are going to get very interesting
  • 3 2
Ladies and Gentleman, If it rains, this race is gonna be out of control. I have a feeling danny is gonna rip this track! Lookin foward to this race
  • 1 0
Danny is out for that race, sorry :/
  • 1 0
q is shorter last year? how long will be doing the 1st of men and women?? from me; Sam hill 2.57.60 and Rachel atherton 3.14.53
  • 3 0
Looks like a rad ride down
  • 2 0
this looks ridiculous and dangerous... can't wait to see how it all goes down!!
  • 1 0
Should be a great race for second place! I hate admitting it, but I think it's kind of true. I'd love to see Gee or Greg pin it. Sick Mick too!
  • 3 0
Only the french could build a course like that. Its going to be carnage!
  • 3 0
My thoughts and prayers go out to the wheel builders for the weekend.
  • 2 0
The only reason they put tight corners is so people would'nt mistake the track for the autobahn
  • 1 0
the "house drop" looks really hard. The guy from the video just did not do it
  • 2 0
this is going to get wild
  • 2 0
By far the best course so far.love all the drops....anybodys race for sure
  • 2 0
the shed drop seems knar cant wait to see who drops it and who flops it!
  • 2 0
If it rains... shit will hit da fan.
  • 2 0
Hill will defiantly do well here.
  • 2 0
This will be a much tougher track than everyone thinks.
  • 2 0
OOOHHHH maaan, this is going to be a good one to watch!
  • 2 0
Thats an insane track!! Sweet!! With rain it will get sketchy as shit!!
  • 1 0
I would not make it down that track alive!

F*ck going near it in the rain.
  • 1 0
 1.champery 2.val di sole 3.val d isere
  • 2 1
This is the tech riders track for sure.
  • 2 0
 A balls out track.
  • 1 0
This is where I go when I die
  • 2 1
Gnarly and fast. Gwin could almost certainly take this.
  • 1 0
 this track looks EPIC!!!!!
  • 2 1
Why do they race in SA when Europe is full of this shit. Nuts track.
  • 1 0
 Sam's gonna own this one.
  • 1 0
loose track! cant wait to see the pros rip it up
  • 1 0
 great track for the watchers!!
  • 1 2
Gwin, Hart and Hill for top three... The order could well be how I wrote it.
  • 2 0
hart's not racing, and Hill will win
  • 1 3
It's steep but with very limited line choices. I'm surprised that this is even a WC DH Course. With limited lines like this, for sure Gwin won't win. Trust me.
  • 6 0
I don't trust you one bit.
  • 2 0
Gwin would remain on the safe side not risking to much. I guess it will end on 4th or around that; there's no point to crash and destroy a so spectacular season with the point margin he has.
If you look deeper there are at least four spots where you can choos beetwen two or three lines with the fastest one is the most dangerous.
Cheers Wink
  • 3 6
If rains on the cards.. Danny Hart!
  • 7 0
 i dont think he's racing
  • 1 0
I think he dislocated his shoulder a week or two ago
  • 3 0
he dislocated his shoulder in training
  • 1 2
Agreed, if it gets sloppy, Hart loose style will do him well. Otherwise I see Gwin winning it, with a very rough ride with as stiff as he likes his suspension.
  • 2 0
"Just a heads up for all of you race fans out there, Danny Hart will not be racing this weekends World Cup round in Val D'Isere France this weekend as he recovers from a crash while training at Crankworx Europe. Heal up quick buddy!"

Danny Hart's Facebook.
  • 6 0
Will Danny's GF still be in attendance? They can replace pics of him with pics of her if they'd like.
