Join us on a ride through Kona's 27-year long history making trail ripping mountain bikes. Together again, for the first time (crazy, right?), an original 1988 Kona Cinder Cone shares the trail with its 2014 offspring. Hop on a true mountain bike original and Kona's longest running bike model and blast through a quarter century of fun.

While shooting the video, Kona's enduro shredder, Matt Slaven couldn't help but love riding a bike that was basically made the year he was born. Photo: Sterling Lorence

He also had a blast on the new Cinder, which features 27.5 wheels, Scandium 69 frame and sweet spec. Photo: Sterling Lorence

Here she be, our first ever mountain bike, and today, our longest running model. Splatter paint, Cromoly, Suntour shifting...beauty.

Around the Banyan tree we go. Wasn't easy finding the retro Lycra, even harder to get Slaven to wear it. Photo: Sterling Lorence

I knew there was something odd about these photo's, but the non racist in me couldn't figure out what. Good spot Warnerja27!

20 year old lycra tights have "lycra memory". Meaning Slaven's nuts are probably red, swollen, and blistering as we speak. Good luck with the recovery and thanks for the memories!

That's hilarious! He used an "under chamois" for protection. But we think the "memory" leaked through...

Could of swore that was the 89 model but I know now I'm wrong lol, I had the yellow lava dome with paint splatter. Back then they looked uber modern with slanting top tubes etc, I still remember my dads gutted face when he was handing over 430 GbP FOR A PUSHBIKE

Maybe if my parents had been willing to shell out $400 for a push bike back then I would have got into MTBing earlier. My 1988 Steel Repco sucked. Coming from a 1983 Supergoose BMX it was super heavy. It was too big for me and I washed out the front wheel on some honkey nuts the first week on it and tacoed the front wheel. Threw it in the garage and rode my BMX with no seat for a while in protest then just gave up riding till I lost my licence in my late 20's.

Funny how a 20 year old model with flashy advertising actually looks fun and totally capable. I feel pretty sheepish now with my brand new 27.5...
  • 1 0
I'll give you "looks" but not "capable"... I had a Fire Mountain from the next year. Frames and handling have drastically improved, even on a hard tail.

Awesome video! Makes me even more stoked about the 1991 Cinder Cone I'm building up at the moment (only have to lace the rear wheel when I have time for it and it's ready Smile ).

Also really liking my '05 Hoss Dee-Lux. There's something about old Kona's that makes my heart beat a little bit faster. Soon I'll start my search for a 2004 Coiler frame, because that was my dream bikes when I started riding 10 years ago. But at the age of 13 it was way outside my budget.

i had a '92 purple/blue lava dome w/project one fork. always lusted after an explosif or a hot back then. graduated to a brodie catalyst the next year!
  • 1 0
I had an Explosif from that time. It was dark red, Nivachrome steel tubing with an 8-sided down tube. One of my favourite bikes ever. It's the only bike I ever really regretted selling.

My first hardtail was a cinder cone. 2001 I think. Used it for everything; dirt jumping, downhill, XC. Ace little frame.
