by Ian Hylands
First up in a series on girls who ride bikes is 16 yr old, Specialized/GROM rider, Lauren Daney of Stafford, Virginia.

Lauren Daney began riding BMX when she was 7, and started riding DH when she was 12. She has put together a list of solid results over the past couple of years including 1st in JR Women at US Nationals in 2008, 1st in Amateur Women at the US Open in 2009 and 2010, and she qualified and raced at World Cup Finals at Windham this year.

How long have you been riding:
I started racing BMX when I was 7, then started riding downhill when I was 12.

How long have you been racing:
4 years now.

Best result:
Probably the US Open this year, I got first in Amateur Women, but my most memorable would have to be just qualifying at World Cup Finals at Windham in New York this year.

Career highlight:
Getting to ride in the World Cup with the fastest people in the world.

Details

How did you get started mountain biking?
My brother brought home a video, Kranked 5 and we started building skinny's and drops behind the house. Eventually we moved on to racing downhill.

Why do you race?
I love the whole atmosphere at races. Getting to ride with other people, and pushing yourself to be faster.

What made you choose DH instead of XC?
Downhill has a little bit of everything: drops, rocks, roots, jumps. It's hard to compare to any other sport...

Scariest moment on a bike?
I'd have to say this year at the Windham World Cup. I've never been so nervous at a race, I almost threw up at the start gate.

Favorite place to ride?
Snowshoe WV, and Diablo NJ

What influences you in racing, who do you look up to?
I look up to a lot of the girls, not one in particular. I just want to push myself to be as fast as them in a few years.

Are you inspired by any pro women DH racers, if so, which ones?
Rachel Atherton, and Tracy Moseley.

You're a girl, how does it feel to be in a sport that's predominantly male?
I love it, I like riding with the guys, I think it makes me a better rider.

Do you do any other sports? Cross training?
I've always sucked at team sports. Riding bikes is the one thing that I'll always stick too.

photo

More Personal Stuff…

Girly or Tomboy?
Girly, but I have my tomboy moments for sure.

Dresses or Jeans?
Jeans are my go to.

Favorite riding clothes?
Troy Lee pants, with soffe shorts underneath just in case ha ha!

Tea or Coffee?
Neither.

Makeup?
Yes, I ride in makeup ha ha!

Pink or Black?
Baby pink is my favorite color, obviously.

In 5 years…?
I think in 5 years I can accomplish a lot. I hope to win Junior Worlds next year and train as much as I can to be the best in the world.

Super lucky. Good luck to her. Also, the raging hormone comments need to slow down, it's getting kinda immature. She is cute but damn, you are making yourself look like an idiot if you start saying the most cliche comments. Good article. Started racing young. Bright Future for sure.

From a FEMALE perspective: awesome work pb and Ian for giving female riders a bit more publicity. She inspires me to ride harder and I can't wait to watch as she progresses in the sport! It's great that she is so good looking as this may help get more media attention for girls in mountain biking. However, all the comments being so superficial based is a little concerning. I think it's safe to assume the non-riding shots of Lauren were not taken after she had done a few runs, sweating in her helmet. When we see photos of the pro women it's usually after they have just won a race, looking a little muddy with helmet hair - it probably wouldn't be a flattering photo of u if u were in the same circumstances! Anyway, congrats to Lauren - keep showing those boys how it's done Wink

Troy is looking a bit more aggressive in this particular shot, but you get the idea!
  • 2 0
Hah! I think that might be the single longest reply thread to a comment I've ever seen... it's really hilarious how you guys react to a cute girl who can ride a bike. You know, she's not the only one out there.

Oh snap!!! It's going down! Get him girl!
  • 1 0
Possibly the best response on this site?
  • 3 0
relax. clearly i don't know you which is i said you SEEM kind of cocky because no one could know a person from reading an interview. for all i know you could be the chillest, most down to earth person out there. I would never claim that you're incredibly cocky from just and article when i've never heard of you prior to reading this. that would be incredibly ignorant. so basically what i'm trying to say is i'm sorry, and i was only stating my interpretation of how the article portrayed you in my personal opinion. my apologies. keep shredding tup
  • 1 0
Could have stated that differently. You do not tell a girl to relax. Gnome sayin?
  • 1 0
agreed. i guess i could've taken a slightly less aggressive approach to staring my rebuttal. I never intended that to sound hostile in the least.

Seriously guys... your not encouraging any other women to join the sport. I have gotten 3 females into the sport and racing in the last year and they are an awesome contribution to the cycling community! If you want a girl that rides... get one on a bike and teach her! As for the author of the article... the last picture was just asking for those comments. If you dont want the sharks after her, dont throw her in the water like that!
  • 9 1
Yes, sort of. I thought about it for a fairly long while, and decided that there was absolutely nothing wrong with posting that picture. I made a decision to not let my ideas and decisions be controlled by what a bunch of rude young guys might say. It's unfortunate that people feel they need make those sorts of comments, but I don't feel that the photo is "asking for" any of it. The comments are made on a regular basis about pretty much any good looking girl on Pink Bike, all we can do is hope that kids become mature enough to not say the first hormone driven thing that pops into their heads.
  • 2 0
apple pie for your insight IH; but it is indeed sad that calling a young attractive woman 'f*cking hot' is pretty much accepted anywhere these days - because of greed almost every level of advertising is saturated with terms and images that put women [ of all ages ] out there in a way that sells sex and convinces us that women are there to be considered as sex objects, and respect is a joke to most of the morons on PB making vulgar comments - that i have fathered twin girls and a third daughter, all of who ride makes me count my blessings that they found young men who also ride and would never indulge in exposing slimey libidos the way i see many of the boneheads on this site do [ it is natural to find a woman attractive and even have a sexual thought cross ones mind occasionally, but to voice it in a degrading way for everyone else to see, what does that say about their own lack of self - respect besides the lack of respect for a woman ] everything seems to be 'sexy' these days, somehow if it isn't 'sexy' it isn't anything - anyway, i suspect all the guys that find everything 'sexy' aren't getting any, and if they are, that's all it is, and not caring wether anything else of deeper importance is present with the women they are involved with, they will end up going from one after another and or get aids or some other form of STDs strong words, i know, and i am not above forgetting my own moral guide some at times, but when i see these comments i am reminded to try harder, so....that's my rant. happy trails.
  • 2 0
I have no intention of putting Ian on blast. I respect him and everything he does in the riding community. Boys will be boys, and it wouldnt suprise me if she had worse pictures on her facebook or myspace that she posted herself. Im over it. What we do need to do is praise those who do create a positive image for women and help them in the sport! I must say there are a lot of companies and people who are doing great things for them all!
  • 1 0
 Well stated everyone.
  • 1 0
livehardrideharder: thanx for reminding me of my own roots as a young man and my hormonal rants with my buds about women - i will try to remember that 'boys will be boys' and hopefully most of the 'boys' making inappropriate comments here will figure it out eventually....[ impressed with your insightful comment given the pile of poo i was in at your age :-) ]
  • 9 0
She should be the role model for girls, instead of myley or what the crap her name is.
  • 6 0
How about we talk about how awesome it is that pinkbike.com is spotlighting girls that kick ass on a bike! The fact that she's hot is just an added bonus. Great to see you guys posting stuff about girls up! We need more of us out there!
  • 2 0
Thanks Deanne, it should be an ongoing thing, as long as we don't get too many bad sexist comments. There are a lot of girls who ride bikes really well aside from the very few that actually get any recognition. I'm not sure how often we'll be publishing this, hopefully at least once a month.
  • 7 1
The sexism on here makes me sick. Grow up, if you guys want to oogle a woman like a peace of meat then its called google images. I thought the cycling comunity was a bit better than this, I'v seen her race, shes dedicated and calculated, not to mention FAST! A very respectable racer.
  • 2 0
 Thanks Mike!
  • 4 5
remove yourself from your soapbox, sir. humans are visual creatures and react thusly. it is genetics. this place is no different. it might not be the right place for it, but it is a natural reaction. surely a woman that catches your eye in a bar is attractive to you and pursued accordingly. maybe she has personality, maybe not. girls are free to do the same. whether they choose to is their prerogative. the last picture posted, that's why looks are an issue. that picture is there to show everyone here how beautiful the girl is. the riding pictures, on the other hand, are there to show us the other side. women in sports will always be objectified and they usually exploit themselves to build on their career. show me an attractive female rider that doesn't have maxim-esque pictures and i'll concede.
  • 3 1
yeah come on, i'm 17! there was no way it wasn't crossing my mind. however, i'd be interested in this article if she wasn't, cos its pretty inspirational to see a girl thats younger than me who can no doubt burn me down a hill!
  • 1 0
First off, sir. Studies have shown that males are far more visual creatures than their female counterparts. The reaction you are referring to is the result of four hormones, oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and androstenedione. Which is a natural animistic reaction found in both males and females. Having said that, just because it is natural doesn't make it excusable or justifiable. Every human being feels the effects of these chemical processes happening in the brain all the time (anger, sadness, happiness, and sexual desire). How we choose to act upon our varying emotional states is what separates one human being from another. But don't get me wrong I am in NO WAY preaching abstinence, and or saying that "the thrill of the chase" is not a wonderful thing. I am simply saying that their is no chase here, this is not a chick in a bar, this is a 16 YEAR OLD athlete that is being objectified by mostly 30 year old men. As for your closing comment Jill Kintner, Kathy Pruitt, and Rachel Atherton just to name a few.

I say good day to you sir!
  • 1 0
I think you are correct about Jill Kintner, Kathy Pruitt and Rachel Atherton. I'd add Tracey Mosely, Sabrina Jonnier and Emmaline Ragot. When I've read stories about these women I haven't seen sexy photos included. I'd say they know the media well and want to be treated as professional athletes - not sex objects. Not saying they're prudes at all - just there's a time and place for everything.
  • 1 0
All of the above girls are on my list as well as a bunch of other up and coming riders and others. Not all racers either. The biggest problem now will be convincing any of them that have seen the comments here to actually agree to it.
  • 2 0
Here's a few ideas. Take 'Girl' out of the title and use the term 'Women'. Never 'dumb down' the story. Keep the questions serious. Leave out the personal stuff about makeup etc. Choose photos carefully. Use plenty of on the bike action and never use posed glamour shots.
  • 2 0
.....and when you publish the story - delete any tasteless comments immmediately.
  • 1 0
Okay, in the future tasteless comments will be deleted immediately, although with this post it's almost a full time job. The personal stuff including makeup etc. is important to the story I'm trying to tell. Remember that while there are a lot of guys that will look at this, it's written for women as well, and these things are important to some.
There will always be posed shots of women or men, it's part of how and what I shoot. We're talking about people that exist and have lives off the bike as well, that's part of what's interesting about them... If you've seen any of my portrait/interview photos in other places, perhaps Decline or the TwentySix annual that I did you'll know what I'm talking about.
As an example of a shot of a guy on Pinkbike look at my shot of Kirt Voreis. In the TwentySix book we ran this one from the same shoot, but with no shirt to see some of his tattoos. That's my style, and part of what I do...
  • 1 0
No worries. All the best with your stories.
  • 1 0
Thanks for doing this Ian (looking forward to the rest)! I think your comment about the other women shying away from doing this is spot on--to all the drooling dudes who say how hot she is and in the same sentence bemoan not having more girls/women out there riding, take a look at what's going on in this thread for a clue... Show a little more restraint and respect, and more women might be interested in being more involved/visible in the sport. (And to all the guys saying "Well that's just how we work," you are basically admitting to being unable to master your own thoughts and the words that come out of your mouth/keyboard--how do you dudes even manage to stay upright on a bike?)
  • 4 0
Nice one pinkbike, I like seeing more female rider profiles. Can we have more on women's specific gear as well? My 5 year old daughter loves watching biking vids and can't wait to go out biking with me when she's bigger. Great to see some role models for her on here.
  • 2 0
Thanks Betty, as long as women aren't completely put off by the comments posted by too many of the men here there will continue to be female rider profiles, and hopefully some women's specific gear as well.
  • 4 0
Why does every guy think with his d***?!?
I hope she will bring the attention to other girls that eventually will join the sport cause I think they are a bit afraid and think it's dangerous but only thing they have to be afraid of is you guys cause the sport itself is not more dangerous then soccer Wink

This is great Ian, Thankyou :] Your the best.
  • 1 0
no problem, glad you like it!
  • 7 0
In trying to inspire my daughters I showed them the article and your awesome pink spokes, and my younger one just laughed at me and said, "Ha, a girl is better than you!" I think it worked a little, but I'm not sure. I am sure she is right! Keep it up!
  • 5 1
this comment section has lowered my opinion of fellow riders considerably this is very unfortunate but props to her shes setting a great example unlike most of the comments here
  • 1 0
How did you really expect a bunch of guy bikers to react to a smokin babe on the trail!? to expect any different is just plain ignorant. This isnt boarding school dude.
  • 3 0
Actually from now on I do expect that everyone responds a little more appropriately. This is a public Notice board viewable by men women and children. From now all my posts will be moderated a little more strictly.
  • 1 0
Best of luck trying to make the kids not behave like children. Try not to pull your own hair out over it tho
  • 1 0
yea i dont think its that big a deal i guess people just have less self control on the computer...unfortunately oh well just the way life is but i really wanna see her race now keep shreddin lauren!!!

Congrats Lauren, Chris Herndon (GROM Racing), and Ian on a great article and exposure.(Excellent photos as usual). The shout out to Snowshoe shows your great taste in mountains. I keep telling my Son if you can do well at Snowshoe, you can do well almost anywhere else. Lauren proves that out in spades. Way to go P. Daney for raising such a cool kid. Your fans at SS.

 Thanks!
  • 3 0
If you look at my favorite photos you can tell I'm a fan of the ladies but I don't think posting the last pic was a tasteful thing to do. Let her get two more years of childhood in before she becomes a sex object that makes her sponsors lots of money.
  • 7 0
Remove your blinders. Shes only a sex object to people who refuse to see that she is an athelete. All 16 yr old girls post pics of themselves on the internet, its modern culture. That she is also appealing is not her fault and will help her as a marketing package later in her career. Be happy for her, she will go somewhere in this great sport and represent our country proudly. Shes on our team!
  • 1 0
well said morpheous, I agree completely!
  • 1 0
I'm not disagreeing with you Morpheous. Her great looks alone will do a lot for our sport. The fact that she is actually fast makes her a great spokesperson for downhill mountain biking. Our sport doesn't receive a whole lot of attention in America and having men and boys alike drooling over her could potentially help influence more people to get into the sport and more mountains to open lift services. However, we need to remember that people are still really impressionable at the age of 16. She is going to read these comments and they are going to get into her head. I would rather see her kicking ass than shaking ass, at least until she is legal.
  • 3 0
I guarantee you that these comments will only make her go faster. Anyone who doubts her speed just show up at Snowshoe, or Windham, or any GES stop this summer and compare run times with her. You may be lucky if you can see the back of her jersey disappearing in the distance. She will be a DH contender on the world cup level make no mistake about that. Lauren, just let the idiocy of some of these commentors roll off your back. There is plenty of positive experience ahead for you as well. Ride on!
  • 2 0
"Shes only a sex object to people who refuse to see that she is an athelete." That last picture does nothing to convey that she is an athlete. I know she is fast and I would love to see her succeed in the future but that last picture isn't something that is going to empower women, its going to use a pretty girl to sell things.
  • 1 0
 Agree.
  • 1 0
OK, Thats the way of the world, marketing with universally appealing images, whats the issue? On the athelete aspect, Did you guy miss the first 7 Pics, and the race results Posted?
  • 3 0
great article - nice to see a female rider getting some good coverage on Pinkbike regarding her looks - yes she is pretty - hopefully she can leverage her looks and obvious riding talent to develop a good solid career racing bikes and promoting sponsors its never hurt to be 'easy on the eye' when you are promoting your sponsors, media like attractive people and that's just the way the world is....
  • 5 0
Nice Ian, good to see some of the girl's perspective of the sport. Keep up the good work!

From a FEMALE point of view : Still looking for girls who rides in dirt/park like me, anyone knows some ??

Anyway thanks PB for posting some cool artcile like that one !

Keep on riding girls !

And no, boys no encouragement for ya, you're too macho ! HAHAHA

Hi Lauren, this is Photomom from Wisp, I've watched you grow and was very impressed you made it to the world cups in Wyndam NY, Ryan and I cheered you on, but you didn't notice us as you whizzed by at great speeds. You look good on a bike and you look good in person. ryan says you are easy to talk to too, you will go far. Keep up the good work and it's great that Ian did this!. I guess you'll have to put up with the love struck puppies because you are a good looking young woman. Be brave, be great, and always strive for the best.

Bloody hell theres alot of lonely people on this website it seems and i thought this was a good place.

Anyway, good luck in the biking life Lauren and keep shredding those DH races. My chance got ruined by injuries, havn't been riding for a year and a half... If your looking for a boy, i mean man. Then maybe you should date my mate Jerald Macadangdang, He's a crazy champ in the making. (he's alittle short tho, lol)

good job Ian Hylands.

I've watched this young woman ride on and off over the past several years and every time I see her on the mountain she has continually impressed myself and many others. The first time I saw her ride, she was shreddin' Snowshoe like nobody's buisness. Recognize and Respect. Best of luck to you Lauren.

Luckily, I'm still under 18.... giggity giggity Drool But seriously, girls that ride are hot, its good to see!
  • 1 0
So Im just gonna put some input on all of this. Having read the actual article. Her accomplishments are impressive. And shes hot. Guys that is really rare in the mountainbike industry beacuse most girls that ride are well lets just say a little rough looking.
  • 5 0
Calm down fellas.... you realize she's 16 right? Keep it clean.
  • 1 0
I think those wheels are Industry Nines - the taper on the hub makes me think so and the direct pull thick spokes. I do love my I9s. So glad she has a neck brace on - that helmet looks so big for her head and heavy, ratio wise if you know what I mean. I would assume such a small rider would need a helmet whose structure is not the same as that which is strong enough for some big guy's head.
  • 1 0
Ummm, we break helmets too. Just because you're small, doesn't mean you don't need to keep your brain. =D
  • 2 0
Bahaha I actually broke that air helmet at the grt in the first pic. hense the halo helmet in the 2nd picture Smile
  • 3 1
What's the big deal with trying to get more women riding bikes? If they want to ride bikes they will. I think it would be more important trying to get more midgets into riding bikes. IMHO.
  • 2 1
Congratulations, girl. Keep riding and ride some XC, haha. I'm sorry, I'm a pedal freak and I'm as good as a potato salad in downhill. I saw a beautiful girl in the article, but when I read "16 years old", I felt sad, sad I'm 28. I think many of us dream of a girlfriend who can ride with us, even better than us.
  • 3 2
as the 'old fart' on PB i find it tiresome and 'pimple faced dweeby' with many of the vulgar and sexist comments - yes it IS cool and good to see anyone that young [ male OR female ] riding DH with that kind of skill and passion, but many of you commenting on her as a sex object [ chicks / hot / blah blah blah ] need to grow up and see her in a way that has to do with the sport - i feel sorry for any young woman that hooks up with you; no wonder many younger women prefer to get involved with an older guy - try to remember before you post your drooling idiot comments that your transparency is a window for everyone here to see into your NOT COOL disrespectful verbal vomit.
  • 1 0
i dont see how calling her hot or sexy or beautiful or something like that is disrespectful. most of the comments do just that. only few are too much.
  • 2 0
When there is an article or story about a woman or girl that rides bikes bikes and does it well and someones only comment is about how hot she looks, that's disrespectful.
  • 1 0
cryion...commenting about someones beauty is different than adjectives like 'hot' or 'sexy' - what do you think these words mean ! these are comments about a view of them as sexually desirable; and she may be that for someone one day when she is a little older and is with someone who sees her as someone first with other qualities beyond 'hot' and 'sexy' - wait till you have a daughter of your own her age, and you will understand how disturbing it may be to have her viewed this way, but worse, to have someone post these comments [ everyone's libido can be difficult to control as far as seeing a young women this attractive and having a 'moment' in your own mind, but to voice it, is....sadly, typical, and accepted by so many in this age of values that glorify and have role models with lady gaga mentality...i realize i am a faint voice in the wind of this 'age of stupidity' so i think i will just count my blessings and one of them is get on my ride and go for a rip...to each their own.
  • 1 0
well... i have to agree with you on pretty much everything you said. although i still find it hard to believe that everyone who commented on her looks only did that just because they were thinking with their penis.
  • 1 0
i wouldnt get to crazy... i mean where did they say what she actually got at worlds... and she deffenety doesnt look like shes goin to fast in those picturs at all... i mean cmon if she was really goin that fast you would see dust and you would see it in her riding position around those turns
  • 1 0
 I was there,she was going fast !!!
  • 2 0
I saw her race this year at 7 Springs. She blew through a rock garden that took down half of the riders that day. She is a very talented rider and has a future in this sport for sure.
  • 1 0
amcat- i was at worlds and the open too and beerguzlinfool- only half the riders... wow what an accomplishment. i placed first on my first ever slolam race- by crashing people- and got seventh in my first dh when the catagory was basicly all open... and anyway talent can only get you so far... but if you put in the work youll get there talent or not. buts thats when your driven for something... and whatt the hell is 7 springs?
  • 3 0
Im picturing everyone who made a comment here with their faces 2 inches from the screen, mouth breathing, "HURR HURR FEMALE RIDER" Razz
  • 5 1
 what every guy dreams of....
  • 3 1
I'm glad she's so blatantly ugly, keeps the immature comments at bay and let's people focus on the fact that she's an athlete.
  • 1 0
yea lets try and be gay. Good idea ....for you.
  • 3 0
If you met her on a night out you wouldnt expect her to be a downhiller would you!!
  • 1 0
omg, she is beautiful! I expect to see alot of her in magazines, modelling gear and bikes. havent seen her ride but she should blow onto the scene soon enough, she will be a marketing dream

  • 2 1
 HEEEEY NOVINHA!!!!!
Essa é boa hein rapaziada, dá pra bater uma final de curso SEM RETORNO aí!

In Brazil we need some girls like that!
  • 1 1
Am I the only one who thinks she's not that good looking? I mean, she's okay, no-one I'd kick out of bed in a few years, but all your comments make her out to be the hottest girl to ever walk the earth.
  • 2 0
She is the one for all these year I was searching for a girl that loves samethink that I love to do I think I am in love
  • 1 0
I am glad I am under 18... Bet she is an awesome racer! Nice bike, my riding buddy (who is a girl) wants a wheel set like that. Good luck this year!
  • 1 0
Sad that shes not the most talktative person, i went in the chairlift with her at MSA and I struggled having a hi from her. Shes still gorgeous though!!
  • 1 0
Nice one Ian, I think we need more girls to be exposed like this. Should attract more girls to ride in the future... as always nice photos to back up the story
  • 1 0
Rad beautiful girl with a killer attitude and the skills to match. Printing out this article to hang in my nieces room. Thank you for this.
  • 3 4
The point i am making is that as soon as a female face appears, every male feels the need to comment it, saying she's hot or whatever else. Typical men, and let's be honest most girls, like being referred too as Good Looking, Beautiful or Cute. Not Hot.
  • 3 0
The girl of my dreams..... hot and downhills!! haha
  • 1 0
yeah dog. too bad you will never meet her! loooooser ! keep drooling buddy
  • 2 0
hot girl that can shred.. marry me :o and hook me up with some free bikes! and teach me how to ride.
  • 1 0
Lauren, you raced BMX so long - what about 4X and DS? Just look at a pure BMX rider like Caroline Buchanen - she is now two times World Champion in 4X.
  • 2 0
Agreed, and it's good to see more girls shredding these days, giving the guys a run for thier money Razz . Props
  • 2 0
Sounds like me, glad I am not the only person that can't catch a ball 7 times out of 10 but can ride a bike.

If shes on a team, why doesnt she ride a sx or demo instead of a bighit? the only reason to get a bighit is cuz its cheaper.
