With more World Cup wins under his belt than any other elite mens downhill racer and with no signs of him slowing down, South African TV sports anchor, Dan Nicholl, sits down with the legend that is Greg Minnaar.
Its true that Greg doesn't get the deserved recognition back in SA but I'd say with the exception of maybe Danny Macaskill most top mountain bikers don't get the recognition they deserve. Bottom line is they don't get enough coverage on national tv or in the papers.
I think they're was a tiny bit on the BBC website when Rachel Atherton won the world champs, although Liam Phillips barely gets a look in and BMX is an Olympic sport.
The BBC did broadcast a Fort Bill WC once (the first time it was held in FB I think) on Grand Stand. It got the single lowest viewings in the history of Grand Stand. I think they're still reeling from it
@DC1988 Ok, Liam Phillips might not, but look at Shanaze Reade, she has her share of tv time and seems to be in quite a few adverts for various things. (I saw her on an Aldi poster just yesterday)
Met Greg 2 years ago in Morzzine. Got my picture taken with him,had a brief chat then he buggered off. The next day,me and my mates came off the hills, parked up the bikes at the bar and started sinking the beers. In comes Minnar with a few cronies, has a beer, walks over to our table and asks how our day was and where we'd been, then buggered off.Absolute gentlemen. Top bloke.
Buggered off maybe the wrong words to use (I am Scottish after all haha) he was very freindly and chatty, not just with me and the lads but also with everyone else who spoke to him. Genuine guy.
*Gwin opens the mouth without even announcing anything just to get some attention during the off-season...seriously, nobody asked him
It seems like there are only less Minnaar fans out there. In my opinion the best downhill rider ever because there is no other rider who has been one of the world's best for such a long time. Go Greg!
love Minnaar, he's a true legend. One thing i have to disagree with however, is the fact that PD designated him to be the greatest mountain-biker of all time last year, based on overall title wins; this was a gender-free status. Problem is, Rachel Atherton has more wins under her belt which means that by that metric, she truly is the greatest mountain-biker this sport has ever seen.
True, and nothing knocking the awesome Atherton, but the times in Men's are well behind those in Women's. If a Jr. was to rack up more wins somehow, could they be considered the greatest, for instance?
But if you compare the times of woman and the men, Rachel would not have won a single world cup. So if we separate them in the race then we need to separate "the greatest ever" in terms of world cup wins too.
Meh, Since when the "greatest mountain-biker" has to be a downhiller? It's a gender-free status, right, but it's also category-free. And Julien Absalon as well as Jared Graves or even Anne-Caroline Chausson may have something to say about that! I only take superdanu's point to the end.
By "category" , I mean the category you race in (Pro (Elite) men, Pro Women, Pro Vet, Cat 1, Cat 2 etc.), not the type of racing you do. Pro men is the top category and the hardest to qualify for. I would hope UCI is open minded enough to let Rachel qualify for it if she wants and I would hope that they would rename it if she make it to a final.
Just to correct Anne-Caroline Chausson has more WC wins than Rachel. Nico's World Champs will most likely hold for a long, long time. And yes, Pinkbike is heavily biased towards gravity. But, - it's also their most largest demographic.
Ali of this talk is nonsense. There are many disciplines of mtb and websites you can find to cover each. This article is about Minnaar. When "Greatest ever" is mentioned in relation to him, no one is claiming he is the greatest human ever or the greatest of all athletes. Don't be ridiculous. Pretty sure that hockey websites are not inundated by figure skating enthusiasts questioning calling Gretzky "The Geeat One".
was I fuckin talking about me, buddy. learn to fuckin read. Just stating that gwinn is on track to eclipse the podium wins record in record time. If you morons couldn't pull that from what I was saying then please stop breathing, your not need on this planet.
Everytime i think humanity can't sink any deeper, somebody like a-r-c appears. Too stupid to miss my point and extremely aggressive because he is too dumb to understand things in life and it annoys him. The reason you got so many neg props is because you behave like a retarded baboon. Go away and only come back when you know how to behave decently again.
Wow...a whole 8 neg props, me against the world I guess. You're the moron here, you and the 7 other neg prop buddies of yours. Go eat a bag of dicks, you fuckin cull.
You look in the cycling section of the BBC news and there is only road coverage. Strange when there is so many Brits winning in MTB???
It seems like there are only less Minnaar fans out there. In my opinion the best downhill rider ever because there is no other rider who has been one of the world's best for such a long time.
Go Greg!
Funny I did not see one dark skin person, I thought that's where Dark skin people came from.
