Distance jumping goes way back in the history books and it's part of our natural progression to want to take things higher and further all the time - we humans like to push limits and exceed boundaries that may have at one time seemed impossible to attain. This weekend Ron Penny and Tedman Parkinson from the Full Monte Dirt Farm plan to surpass the current world record of 133.6 feet set back in 2006 by Jason Rennie.
Back in February of 2006 a guy by the name of Jason Rennie (no relation to Nathan) got towed in by a motorbike (at 83 km/hr) and set the world record for the longest ramp to ramp bicycle jump - he went 133.6 feet. That record has held for nearly 6 years now.
Only 4 months prior in November of 2005, Nathan Rennie sent his Santa Cruz V10 to 121 feet to an unofficial record. He too was towed in by motorbike.
Now before either of the Rennies, the World Record was held by a BMX rider by the name of Colin Winkelman who piloted his BMX bike to 116 feet on December 21, 2000. He too was towed in by a motorbike.
As you can see all the previous record holders have been towed in by motorbikes, but here is where Ron and Tedman intend to put the mountain bike back into the record books and no motorbikes will be part of this event. Ron and Tedman will be doing all their jumping at full gravity and pedal assisted only - yep they are mountain bikers and feel that this record should be held without the aid of any motor assistance.
Pinkbike will be on hand to document the entire event in the following days and are looking forward to seeing the guys land themselves a new world record.
Ron and Tedman want to thank their supporters in this - Santa Cruz Bikes, Easton Components, Troy Lee Designs Canada, The Bicycle Cafe - Kamloops, Pinkbike.com, Billy Bike Club, Krystina Green and all their friends and family for believing in them.
Time to send it boys!
but being an old skool bmx rat..winkleman on the 20 (tow or not) is the shit! it's like basejumping with a grocery bag.

This shows that suicidedownhiller's anecdotal evidence is mathematically correct - the steeper the kicker, the more hang-time you get from the same speed.
*Note that the angle of the kicker on the jump may not necessarily, in fact in most case won't be, the same as the angle that you leave the jump - it all depends on how you suck up the jump or boost the jump. I've written a review of Mastering Mountain Bike Skills as a blog and it shows Brian Lopes racering a jump and boosting the same jump, same entry speed, different results.
if you are travelling at 5 meters a second and a 5 meter gap (lets say its a flat drop launch for obvious reasons) takes 1 second
then travelling at 10 meters a second, a 10 meter gap with and identical launch will also take 1 second. its obvious
If two riders are both at the peak of their arc at the same height, and one is travelling faster than the other, the will both fall at the same speed but the faster one will travel further horizontally. If they were both jumping to flat, they would both have the same time in the air. However, this jump is to a down ramp, so by travelling further horizontally, the faster rider will actually hit the ramp below the slower rider vertically, and therefore will fall further vertically, and therefore have more time in the air.
If it helps, imagine a typical flat to down tranny, say a flat ramp overlooking a large meadow. It's two feet high at the exit. If you roll off the end without jumping, you fall two feet. If you fly off the end without jumping, you'll hit the ground way downhill and be much more than two feet below the lip without jumping.
Seems like Pinkbike will need a new format just to feature pictures of this event properly.
PB Widerscreen anyone?
it still mind boggles me on how that's gonna be possible.
I swear there's a 10km straight (steep) decent just right of that picture
The jump Winkleman did is so much gnarlier - 20 inch wheels, steep headangle and no suspension. Legend!

thought Pink bike would have been all-over the coverage like a fat kid on cake
Before i get negative 5000 on this hear me out. A lot of records are recorded by where the rider or driver lands and not the lip to landing distance. So go back to other jumps made, take the redbull tour of Australia back in NWD 5 i believe (the year before Nathan Rennie set his record). With no prep they took a moto ramp, that was super steep built for tricking, in someone's back lot lined it up with a dirt landing that was under 25feet long and reached out to something like the 80 foot mark. that takes precision and balls. you only get a 5 foot margin of error on the landing. here they have what looks to be out to 60 feet from the top of the landing before they land to flat and the top of the landing in the photo sits before even the BMX record mark at about 100 feet.
Not saying i would do it, not saying its not impressive, but i am saying the records made before will remain more impressive to me even if they do in fact set a new one here.
Why won't you go and do it yourself?
EDIT: ohhhh, it says it in the article. probs should have read that first.
Team-Coja... Sending the 'Vibe' your way!
Same Jump!!!
I wonder how many seconds of airtime that is ???
haha sarcasm.......pos prop
I want to know if its been done also, if so, when is the pics/vid going to be uploaded?
[edit] ah never mind, I see now that it will be posted in the upcoming days.
