Bike Check: Andreas Kolb's New Atherton Bikes Mullet - NotARace Test Session 2021

Jun 7, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

One of the team changes that went a bit under the radar this off-season was Continental Atherton's new signing Andreas Kolb. Kolb was previously racing for Gamux Factory Racing and impressed with his consistent top 20 results in the disrupted 2020 season.

The jump between the teams may not be as big as it seems as Gamux, just like Atherton Bikes, use 3D printing to help bring their creations to life. Last year Andi was involved in the testing and development of Gamux's new frame and that experience will no doubt be invaluable for the Atherton team too. For 2021, he's on an almost entirely new set up so we took a quick look around his bike to see what he'll be running this season.

Andi has settled on a mullet set up for his first season on Continental Atherton after testing with both wheel set ups last year on Gamux. The mullet is not new for Atherton Bikes, and it's the same setup we recently saw Gee riding for his Slateline edit.

photo
We've previously seen this machined rocker link with a flip chip at the shock mount but it's one mode only for Andi on this prototype.

photo
Andi moves over from Ohlins suspension last year to Fox in 2021.

photo
This is a SRAM XO drivetrain paired with an FSA K Force cassette reduced from 11 to 7 speeds.

The cockpit and stem also come from FSA

photo
In a happy coincidence, Trickstuff Maxima brakes are a pretty close match to the Continental Atherton colours.

The Continental Atherton team is still testing and developing the new Kaiser DH tyres.

 Modern IronHorse Sunday. very nice.
  • 10 2
Modern is a bit of an understatement, but I agree and I love it.
  • 3 2
@jaymztrigga no it isn't, Giant glory is closer to iron horse than this bike.
  • 8 5
 @fracasnoxteam:

This has generally the same layout and both have DW link suspension design whereas Giant has Maestro... A DW link rip off.

The tube and 3D printed Ti lug construction is surprisingly appealing in a retro looking way. Makes me wish I could modify the lug CAD to look like the classic ornate road lugs. I dig it.
  • 4 0
that would take it to the next level. Some ornate lugs would look great on that bike
  • 2 0
You could probably pay them (alot) extra to do so if you order one Wink
  • 2 0
 Absolutely wouldn’t be difficult.
  • 35 1
The simplicity of the Atherton bikes make them look great. Never go out of style.

I'd definitely support/buy a Atherton bicycle if I could get one on order, shipped to Canada
  • 3 0
@lehott: I was in talks with Robot a few years back about one.

@lehott: nothing in your way…. It’s been quite the process but I got mine last week. Shipped to Whistler

@lehott: Drop Tom an email to: tom.lancaster@athertonbikes.com and we can make it happen!
  • 6 0
@athertonbikes: Keep us updated to see if lehott puts his money where his mouth is.
  • 2 0
@lehott: FYI I had a MOJO Geometron shipped to Canada a few years back. No issues. Request that they ship via Royal Mail so it's handled thru Canada Post on our end FYI.

As much as I love to see this kind of approach to frame building technic that reminds me of tomac's raleigh, That rocker link belongs to game of thrones....sorry love the rest though
  • 9 0
Kind of agree with the rocker, it’s a bit like they weren’t told what the rest of the bike looked like
  • 20 1
If it were ano black you probably wouldn't even notice it was there. My assumption is that they play with linkeage geometry (just like everyone else) and so they have multiple if these on hand. Because they're one-offs I doubt the fit and finish is retail quality.
  • 1 0
@mashrv1: If the rocker was black it might help keep your eye off it! Shape odd but prob has to be for strength and for suspension design.

Are they just making bikes for themselves?
  • 4 4
No, you can buy one. Go on their website and find the email adress to where you can place your order.

@parkisatool: I'll check it out. Thanks.

 @parkisatool:

Has any normal consumer actually gotten one?

@athertonbikes: Guys, it is all up to you how you market your products and actually i wrote to you. However from my very personal feeling something is not very great. At least for me. You replied with prices and the spec but after your bikes only stays your name. If I am to pay crazy money for dream bike I want to read your bike test review by many sources first. Not only believe in your name.
  • 4 4
@patryka: what a load of crap. If you don't want one then don't buy one. Reviews are always biased anyway. Read any review about a DW link and choose your geo. Stop wasting everyone's time.
  • 2 0
@parkisatool: hahahaha, i am not wasting your time. Everybody make the decision by himself.
I wish Athertons good business as they all deserved that. But I am 100% that most of riders would not buy an expensive bike nobody knows about. If you are happy i am cool with that. I would buy Nukeproof or Spec Enduro because i can read about that. All the best for you boomers.
  • 2 0
Still not sure why they've invested all this money into building bikes but there just not out there or easy to buy surely investors and the athertons etc are going to need a return on these frames/ bikes ???all gotta earn a living right?
  • 2 1
Behind the scenes so much work is being done to get our processes nailed. We've got some exciting new projects coming soon which are really going to put us up there as the best bikes you can get, tailor made for you and your riding.
  • 4 0
It takes time to build a company. You don't go from startup to full scale production overnight.
  • 3 0
Is there a video somewhere of how the suspension works? I've always found Atherton bikes suspension a bit of a mystery because they were so secretive back when released.

DW Link lower, 'Horst Link' pivot on the chainstay with a rocker link compressing the shock
  • 6 0
 www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRMIEz3qUYc

www.pinkbike.com/video/455644

Both of these are of the Robot Bike Co R160, but it uses the same DW6 suspension design. Basically, it's like a Horst link with a rocker compressing the shock, but instead of having the lower link rotating around a pivot on the frame, it uses two additional short links near the BB to create an additional 'virtual pivot' (instant center) just for the lower link. It's an actual six-bar design, unlike the current Enduro/Demo, Sender, and that new Marin e-bike (those are just four-bar designs with additional links to drive the shock).

@theshortestcharles: thanks! That second video was exactly what I was looking for.

Question: why are Continental tyres so underrated (underestimated?) while the Atherton's ride them for years?
I've heard so many horrors about these gums. Did someone put a spell on them?!
  • 3 0
I wanted to try schwalbe tyres for years, heard horror stories about them with some people. New bike came with some fitted so thought I'd try them, love them, will not change now. Have had conti's before. Were a good tyre. Can't think of anyone else that runs them except the athertons though.
  • 11 1
Having personally tried damn near every tire/tyre available. . . The answer to your question is that the continental casing feels like cardboard. Their rubber is fantastic and their patterns are ok. The Kaiser is a great rear tire, but comes up short in the front. The Baron is AMAZING in loose, rooty and muddy stuff but comes up short in hardback or dry dusty conditions - and it's not available in DH. From spy shots it looks like they have been testing a Minion inspired tire, which, IMO will be a great tire for them with their rubber knowledge. I really hope they sort out their casings because they're just not that good. If they get that sorted their tires will easily be as good or perhaps better that the other premium options.

Because the Nevegal trail tires were absolute trash and it’s hard to get rid of that stigma.
  • 3 0
@alexbg: Danny Macaskill, Fabio Wibmer, and others I can't think of rn
  • 6 1
 @DHhack: kenda nevegal?

Love the Continental Mud King in 2.3 - best mud tyre that I’ve tried
  • 2 0
 @DHhack: uhhhhh what?
  • 3 0
@Trudeez: I have to agree with you. Continental rubber is excellent. It has incredible grip in the wet and somehow wears like iron. The casing gives a shitty ride feel and gets warped very easily. I stopped buying their tires because I hated riding tires with warped casings.
  • 3 0
 @Trudeez: Isn’t a Nevegal a kenda tire?
  • 5 2
 Geeze don’t drink and post!!
  • 1 0
Probably because they don't have very many good tires. When they re-vamped the lineup for 2018, I got a few sets of cross king, mountain king, and trail king in 2.4 and 2.6. I didn't find any of these tires competitive with offerings from Vittoria, Bontrager, or Maxxis. Trail King was the worst, with foldy side knobs it's just a pointless tire. Mountain king has knobs that barely stick out, they're like 3.1mm high.
  • 1 0
I ride conti's and love them. And I got them for under $30 each.
  • 1 0
I had a x-king shed ten or so side knobs on the first ride, and a trail king go out of round shortly thereafter. I’ve never had either of those problems with WTB or Vitoria, and never had a Maxxis shed knobs.
  • 1 0
And sorry for the misspelling of Vittoria.
  • 2 0
@Trudeez: spot on.. I can only add that der kaiser folding and DH version behave and feel like different tires.. der kaiser DH casing on the rear is a fantastic tire..except in deep loam or mud..
  • 1 0
I rode their Projekt in front which was great at first and then the bead stretched which made it very unreliable at normal riding pressure. But for some reasons even before that I started to loose confidence in the grip. I discussed this with a friend who happened to be riding it it too and he had the same feedback, loved it and all of a sudden didn't trust it anymore. When I retired the tire it looked like it barely rode, no obvious signs or wear but maybe the knobs lost consistency internally which killed the grip while still looking like new ?
  • 1 0
I've had three conti tyres since I've been riding... All egg shaped! one was so bad it hit the chain stays so much I thiught my wheel was buckled. Terrible QC
  • 3 0
@Trudeez: Since '18 the "protection" casing has been reworked and feels ok (between exo+ and dd), the new "apex" (without protection) dh folding carcasse of the '20 kaiser is fantastic. Rubber has been really good every since, especially in the wet.
  • 5 3
I just had a deja vu of a deja vu. How many bike checks of identical looking bikes can we have?

Why not paint one @athertons?
  • 6 0
They are painted black, otherwise the lugs would be grey.
  • 4 0
We can't get enough of Race Bike Checks! Good Pics, good stuff
  • 2 1
I want one painted to look like the bamboo bikes. The nice thing about riding one of these has to be the fact you don't have to look at it.
  • 3 2
@Rigidjunkie: this bike would actually look amazing with wood-like graphics, especially bamboo!
  • 3 0
It‘s got 485 mm reach and 455 mm chainstays, in case you find this bike check lacking
  • 2 0
 So who won the "NotaRace"
  • 2 0
Joe Breeden I think - it's in Wyn TV.
Bernard Kerr said that a few weren't trying too hard. Kerr was fastest on top split and said he never had a clear run on the bottom (it's wasn't closed to the public it seems).
