Final Results from EWS-E Tweed Valley 2021

The EWS-E season reached its conclusion in the Tweed Valley as riders faced three loops, 14 stages and over 57km of racing. In the Women's racing, it was just Tracy Moseley and Laura Charles out on course. By the end of the 14 stages, Tracy Moseley takes home the win by over four minutes. Nicolas Vouilloz came out victorious in the Men's EWS-E race, with Kevin Marry making it a top-two finish for the Lapierre Overvolt Team. Vouilloz did face some tough competition from the likes of Sam Hill and Reece Wilson, but a small crash from Reece early in the race put him out of contention.  So basically Reece Wilson would have probably won if he didn’t crash, but he did, so Sam Hill won the most DHs. He would have won if he could pedal up hills better, but he can’t, so Nico Proved he was the best on the day, because he was good both up and down. I wonder if someone like Tom Pidcock, would win an event like this, because he’d take minutes out of the top times on the uphill stages.

 @barry9559: That seems to be the only way Pidcock knows how to ride. He won the Olympics the same way. Basically every world cup he started in the back and chased down the front group and put himself in contention. He is great to watch.

 It's an odd format really, especially considering Sam won half the stages and only finished 4th overall.

I can't help but feel it would be better to award points for your placing in each stage otherwise the technical climbs will always be the decider? Or maybe Sam just couldn't be arsed to pedal hard in them...

 100% agree. Could also apply to the non-E too though. For example, you could win all the stages and have a puncture on the last and all that hard work would be gone.

 Yeah its a bit odd given the 'power stage' so clearly decides the overall. If you take out those power stages, Sam would have beaten Nico by 50+ seconds....

 They should award points on a per stage basis and then bonus points for the Overall placings. Example;

Stage 1st Place 20 points
Stage 2nd Place 18 points

Overall 1st Place 40 points
Overall 2nd Place 36 points

This would keep riders from playing it safe and managing time once they have built up a time gap early and make the per stage racing much more important.

 Isnt the climb going to be mostly about the motor? I know XC goons who whoop my ass uphill because watt/kg and not skill...

Having ridden some different ebikes they are not the same even if they all average 250watts

 They need to scrap the power stages, it’s all about who’s the lightest/fittest/most powerful motor. I like to watch racing and mainly people going balls out DH, the lines they pick etc. I get the theory behind up hill stages but they just have no place in racing IMO. I’m all for e bikes and would much rather see more DH stages and using the e bike for getting more runs in.
Until they make it as equal as possible in terms of equipment it’s just a total farse and marketing ploy.

 Would there even be any point in having an ebike race if there weren't uphills as I'd guess the DH sections would be quicker on a regular bike?

I quite like watching the uphill bits - they all look pretty techy and tricky to ride. Almost like moto trials.

 @Rusty77: Especially considering during the enduro/e-enduro field test, the ebikes were way slower down the same track as the regular bikes.

 @Rusty77: For now, as we watch the discipline evolve, I fully agree. Without the power stages, it's just a greater number of watered-down EWS stages with extra transfers and greater emphasis on conservation and consistency. That's not to say the racing isn't world-class - the riders are often the same as in the regular EWS - but the descending is just that little bit less pinned than than the regular EWS. The power stages are what differentiate it by requiring a unique skillset.

Power stages are also an important R&D laboratory. It's a great way to test the durability of the equipment and to refine the power delivery curves.

 Not convinced that’s always the case. There are a few non pedalling downhills trails in my area where ebikes have set quicker times. It takes different skills to get the best out of eMTBs. I would suggest some testers haven’t spent enough time on eMTBs to develop those skills. I reckon in most downhills where the motor assist is not relevant it will be the riders skill that will be more important. Ie Reece Wilson would whip most peoples asses regardless whether he was on an eMTB or a Mtb @Ryan2949:

 They need to scrap the whole ebike enduro. It’s a massive case of marketing over substance. I’m quite sure the engines can be tuned to be better than standard, the electronic equivalent of blueprinting an engine, and no doubt the same with the batteries to get more out of them than their nominal capacity.

I notice that they couldn’t sell all the ebike entries available to the public but the proper race sold out in minutes, that should tell the, something

 @R-M-R: I was thinking the same. The power stage does show the difference in the motors, and that's partially the point. It encourages the manufacturers to make their motors better, and that technology filters its way down to the consumer. Same basic idea as pretty much every professional racing series out there.

 Yeah there's podium photos with Sam in 3rd? I think those results in the article are done before Rogge got 35 seconds in penalties for late check points

This is journalism malpractice 101 and really grinds my gears.
We see big news publications doing this all the time. They mess up facts, and when forced to acknowledge that they silently slip in a correction in the original article without ever notifying readers

 @chmurka3rg: It seems Tracy rides with a greater margin of safety than most riders, leading to her incredible consistency. A huge number of stages and poor conditions suit a conservative rider and sure enough, she's right up there with the men.

If there were enough stages, I wouldn't be surprised if Moseley and Vouilloz were the last two battling it out.

 @chmurka3rg: that doesn’t surprise me, she has the same engine as the men and is probably lighter so should gain on the uphill stages. She is quite handy riding down them too

 Great seeing racers for other bike & motoX disciplines getting into eMTB racing. Vouilloz is still the one to beat, but Mr. Hill showed he has the pace on the downhill stages.

 Mr. Hill mention that eMTB racing takes a toll on your whole body. To ride an eMTB fast uphill or downhill will take a lot out of you. Anyone that states it's easy to race an eMTB is full of BS and hasn't race one at any competitive level.

 I just came across this short recap by @wynmasters . These were not the kind of pedally uphill stages you’d first imagine. One step closer to hard enduro which I think is a cool new angle in the sport.

 Shimano motor is not a race motor!!! The power is really low compare to other motors... SAM results show that. Give him a real motor!!!!

 Glyn O'Brien won the Masters 35+ on a Vitus equipped EP8 motor, and Michael Cowan finished 3rd in same category with Megawatt EP8. It has potential but do agree with what you say

 You are talking about the old E8000 I am guessing because the current EP8 has the same output as the current Bosch Gen 4 (85nm). I was watching on the first power stage and it was technical climbing skill not motor output that made the difference. I am sure if you asked Sam if a weak motor was the problem he would point out that Lack of Grip was the problem.

 Interesting fact is Sam Hill is the 1st EWS-e racer to have finished in the top 5 riding a Shimano EP8 motor, everyone else is racing on a Bosch or Brose motors.

 Nicolas Vouilloz, Reece Wilson and Sam Hill. Hell yes! Sam must have gotten lots of good practise in before the regular EWS by doing this, if they share some stages. Clever.

 Congratulations to all ,but to the Portuguese ones ,what a performance,well done ,(e Nuno a Tracey ficou à tua frente :-))))))),mas ainda és novo ,calma :-)). ),and yes that power stages shouldn’t be so harsh because of the time ,but they do have a motor ,so…………..,but yes some motors have more power or better tuned to that kind of stages ,cause if they don’t have some regulations on power it becomes a real poor series when the power stages are deciding the final classification,cause tuning the motor to meat the demands of the stages are OK ,but to have a motor that is much more powerful then the rest ,then it is not that very fair ,but I still don’t think this a fair bike category,cause it is motor assist ,it is very tricky,and not that sporty ,but it is just another “mtb”sport that get us entertained,but E bikes are getting in the stupid and danger world ,cause they are becoming more and more and more like a motor Bike ,not that much pedal motor assist,but more like yes you can pedal if you want ,a 750 w battery isn’t enough?,the so call 85nm and “250w”not enough?,like CHRIS READ used to say THIS IS NO TECHNOLOGY BREAKDOWN,O NO THIS THE ROAD TO HELL ,keep on riding no matter what to all people (still love riding my 26” bike )

 @mc-marshie69 Because of the mass market appeal of Ebikes? I wouldn’t be surprised if Sam Hill and Pager jump into this for next year and ditch the the normal Enduro. Perhaps, you might have just Elliot Heap, Kelan Grant and Katy Winton as the Enduro crew?

 It is a new event,last year was only test events. The Tweedlove ebike race 2 weeks earlier was over subscribed. If you hate on ebikes then you are way behind the current times mate.
