The European Bike Project is one of our favorite Instagram accounts because the feed is constantly updated with everything from tiny manufacturers to inside looks at European manufacturing. During Eurobike 2023, Alex is tracking down the most interesting products from small manufacturers for you.

"I've got something in my backpack that I want to show you."

When you meet one of the world’s finest suspension experts at Eurobike and he says “I’ve got something in my backpack that I want to show you”, you know it’s going to be exciting.

Fabien from Fast Suspension had his new coil shocks with him and gave us a quick run-down of the most important features.

This is the new DH-specific Ride D shock.

The new shocks are named "Ride E" for Enduro and "Ride D" for downhill. The target was to make a simplified shock based on customer feedback.

To adjust the compression on the Ride E, there's a 3 position adjuster (open, flow and climb). You can also adjust the low-speed rebound and the shock has a hydraulic bottom out feature on the last 25% of the stroke. The HBO is tuneable via the shim stack.

The Ride D has the same chassis as the Ride E but the compression unit is different, and can be externally adjusted. Both shocks will be tuned to suit the bike kinematics, while the Fast Fenix is tuned according to the rider's preferences and bike kinematics.

The self-centering bottom-out-piston.

The bottom-out-piston is self-centering to make sure it's always perfectly aligned with the bottom-out-cup. Fabien also says that the HBO piston slides a little bit during the rebound phase to avoid a sticky feeling.

Both the Ride E and Ride D share parts with the more expensive Fast Fenix such as their VDP main piston, shock body and seal head. The shaft is steel and comes with a hard chrome treatment. Both shocks will come in the following versions:

- Standard eyelet: 210x55/52.5/50, 230x65/62.5/60/57.5 and 250x75/72.5/70
- Trunnion: 185x 55/52.5/50, 205x65/62.5/60/57.5 and 225x75/72.5/70

The price will be 649 EUR (without spring and hardware; the Fenix costs 950 EUR). Fast recommends running their Ichu steel light spring on the new shocks.

Fabien says that the shocks will probably be available from August 2023.

First time I’ve ever wanted to Ride D

Well, at least your bottom-out-piston is self-centering and your HBO piston will slide a little bit during the rebound phase to avoid a sticky feeling.

Size wise I think I’d need to Ride D on my Pole.

As someone is regularly referred to as D. Im not sure how I feel about all this attention. Vacillating between flattered and scared.

 @Blownoutrides: nicely played sir.

Anyone recall the o.g. Pinkbike tee shirts that read “I like nine inches in the rear”? Outside overlords would never go for that now.

@sngltrkmnd: Wish I could do the one hand up Emoji on here but no dice!!

Had BOS fork once, beautiful and excellent fork, getting it serviced in the US was a nightmare. Ever since I'm personally not doing obscure European parts anymore. Fox and RS it is.
  • 9 6
So much better stuff than Fox and Rockshock that you can have easily serviced in the US IMO

 @stormracing:
In a similar price range as rockShox?
What brands? I was going to put a RS super duper flippity coil on my random but if there’s something “better” at a similar price range I’d give it some thought

I was super interested to try some Fast stuff, but after having a customer come in with a leaking cartridge (not actually Fast's fault tbf, previous shop messed it up) I found a complete lack of service documents for any non current products, and got ghosted after they wouldn't take my word that I knew what product I was working on and wanted pictures. Their products might be super awesome and ride great, but stuff like that is an instant turn off, even if they might tell me it was a one off incident that slipped through the cracks.

I sure will never have another fox product ever!! Nor sure where you live but ext, formula, olhin can be serviced pretty much anywhere in usa or Canada.
  • 2 0
@thomas1965: so why wouldn't you provide a pic?
Seems like a fair request.
  • 3 0
@BarryWalstead: no I did, *then* they ghosted me
  • 2 0
Exactly, I love my Nicolai but getting replacement parts is a pain and the $100 shipping sucks
  • 2 0
@dytrdr6: have you tried via their dealer bike-components.de? I've not needed small parts yet but they shipped me a frame for ~40usd.
  • 2 0
One for us Europeans I suspect. I do have a soft spot for Formula too.

BOS customer service is a pain. I tried to get a 15mm axle for a BOS Deville that had a 20mm axle, went through Probikeshop, never received any reply sent to BOS. I heard from a local bikeshop that they stopped doing maintenance on BOS first after the company tried to force them to buy X forks per year.

servicing issues were just as bad inn the eu also! edit looks like ive accidentally replied to the wrong comment. ah well

@ybsurf: Ditto on the Ohlins... even down here in Africa. Not so sure about RS & Fox. The agent for RS is pretty unresponsive when contacted.
Our local suspension shop in Cape Town can handle pretty much anything though !!

I'v had a Fast Fenix in my 2021 Rocky Mountain Altitude. Simply put: it was the best suspension part that I ever rode.
  • 1 0
and then? sounds like you didn't keep it?

When a suspension brand release a new shock within a year of the release of his main competitor releasing his shock and matching the price point, then you know that said shock mist have been hurting Fast suspension sales. Hopefully this shock is as good a Novypaet Novya for the same price point.
  • 2 0
 Thought exactly the same …
Well with novyparts you have the app to help to tune the shock
  • 1 0
@nobrain: yeah and Novypart has not been milking customers for years. When you see the price difference between a SPlug and a Yari-up for what is basically the same thing and all Fast stuff seems to be along those lines.
  • 2 0
But the novya can be rebuilt at Home with some Standard Tools except Piggybag, which Maxime claims IS Not necessary for Standard Service, and only uses norm sealings etc. Communication is faster as well. Recently there was a short review from astonmtb in Instagram. I can only completely agree with him. My novya in the GG Smash and before the mde Damper works stellar and makes a great compromise of good support and plowability. Best piece of damper I have Had yet.

Maxime at Novypart did a good job for me making a BOS Deville work like it should. He wad good to deal with and came across as decent guy
  • 1 0
 @nobrain:

Where can I find that app and what is its Name?
  • 5 0
Does fast have a slow version for us gapers
  • 1 0
Good they Made this D Version with one adjustable compression. I hate those "enduro" ShockS with 3 modes.
Give me 3 steps,OK, but at least 10 clicks Lsc.

So everybody can have IT His way.

Has the D adjustable Lsc or MSC?
  • 3 0
After reading the headline I thought the E stood for electric and the D for dignified.
  • 1 0
Self-centering = the bottom out piston is always inside the secondary cup
Slides a bit = the bottom out piston is spring loaded on the shaft to allow for displacement relative to shaft movement
  • 3 0
And you don't even need to send it in for a single compression adjustment
  • 1 1
I don't know anything about suspension but it's kinda shiny black with an anodized bit and has that cool matte polished finish on the coil so it's gotta be good. EXT is soooooo mainstream right now.

They had upgrade kits for old Pike forks (2015), but they stopped doing those. Anyone with an alternative kit to upgrade a Pike solo air 2015?
  • 1 0
I almost got a Fast Fenix last October for my Knolly... But I couldn't find out very much information about them.
  • 1 1
Better than ext storia(better custom tuned at fast, less noisy) in my opinion. Both really good though
  • 1 0
@sevenup: Custom tune quality is pretty subjective because it is dependent on the specific shop or distributor that set it up for you. Fast may be popular in France where it is built but as far as I can tell support is non existent for the United States.
  • 1 0
I have a fast fenix and im a fan, the range of adjustment is huge
  • 2 2
Nice humble brag brü, dentistry treating you well?

@rem17: as a university student and a father, i feel the consequences everyday

@rem17: you're the one with the Push shock, you Dental Hygienist

@dfbland: this dude probably owns over a hundred acres. Can’t trust the über wealthy nepo babies.

@rem17: alright buddy, dont spill your maple syrup
  • 2 0
@qualms23: fair enough, but you overestimate the opportunities to spill maple syrup. The real stuff flows real slow
  • 1 0
@rem17: Maple syrup is more likely to be stolen...
  • 1 0
Wow for that money it is a perfect candidate for my DH bike. It looks really good.
  • 1 1
So many excellent, boutique options out there. I don't doubt this thing performs very well.
  • 2 3
I guess a Fast suspension is better than a Slow suspension lol
  • 1 0
They should be named Slow Suspension, kinda like how this website was named the opposite of the usual mountain bike media names at the time (though nowadays names have mellowed out a bit).
