The first round of the UCI World Cup Trials of the season in Aalter, Belgium got off to a flying start yesterday evening. In front of a boisterous crowd Dutchman Rick Koekoek, beat his own Guinness World Record, setting a new best-ever of 1.44 meters (4 feet, 8.69 inches) in the bunnyhop. With three riders out of the top five of the UCI 20” ranking, the high jump contest at the iconic Aalter square ‘kiosk’ brought together some serious talent. Benito Ros and Dominik Oswald reached the later stages of the event. Multiple 20-inch World Champion Ros made it to 1.37 meters, but Koekoek was clearly the strongest.

Rick Koekoek’s previous Guinness World record of 1,43 meters had stood since the 9th of August 2014 and was achieved at Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle, in London. Initially, it looked like a new world record was not to be expected with the event taking place so early in the season when riders are far from their peak form. The cool evening temperature had been less than favourable too. “The enthusiastic Aalter crowd definitely pushed the riders to give it their best shot,” said event promoter Enter-Bike’s Fien Lammertyn. “We’re proud that Rick pulled off his massive 1.44 meter jump here in Aalter! It’s the best start we could have hoped for a great weekend of biketrial riding.”

bigquotesI'm super stoked with this new world record. Especially, because it came so unexpected. It's still so early in the competition season that I'm currently nowhere near my best shape. Awesome to get going like this for the weekend. Now, my focus moves to the UCI World Cup tomorrow.Rick Koekoek

To be officially registered by the Guinness World Records. the attempt will be verified in the next few weeks

The highest recorded hop performed by a rabbit, i.e a bunny, is 3.2ft. Your boy Koekoek just hopped over 4ft, thus beating the bunny at their own game.

It's a good moment for a social debate over 'bunny hop' name as it belongs to people from now on. Well done Mr. Koekoek, mankind is forever grateful.

When that Playboy bunny jumped from the building it was much more than 4 ft. Or was that a drop?
  • 20 2
Did anyone check if he was running boost?....that would have a clearly been unfair.
  • 5 0
Might be time to start calling it the Roo-hop
  • 1 0
@Borro: maybe call it the kangaroo jump from now on?
  • 2 0
@Triber66: nah, it was the 20 inch wheels that did it for him. Don't tell sram that though!!
  • 1 0
@ctd07: Nah. Koek Hop. 1.44m of Koek.

I destroyed a tire coming up short on a curb the other day. True story.

Just wait until 29 inch wheels make it onto the trials scene. We will really start to see the sport progress....

Maybe in Mexico... With all the tacos
  • 35 2
I bunny hoped a curb the other day without clipping my back wheel. Just saying.

A black dude would destroy this record as it's pure fast twitch actuation. Somehow I don't think African cultures are too into the sport of bunny hopping bikes.

white men can jump, ever seen the 9/11 footage?

@FrozenTreads56: not sure what to make of this... Wow!

This is a totally insane and inhuman achievement!

Just the description is incorrect, it's a side hop and not a bunny hop; a totally different technique.

Doesn't make it any less insane and unreal though!
  • 13 1
this. side hop and bunny hop are not the same

I can't even jump that high on my feet

I think they should go with a Fosbury Flop. Does it count if they crash on the landing?

Thats funny. Saw him just two weeks ago at the world cup BMX, at Papendal the Netherlands, practising this bunny hop. Even had a chat with him. He told me that he would challenge his own world record. Its great to read that he actually managed to do so. He is really a friendly guy and a great bicycle artist.
  • 6 0
Looks like he cleared with a few inches too!
  • 6 1
Technicaly, they are side hopping the bar..
  • 3 0
40cm´s more and he can shave my Head with (hopefully)his rear wheel,1,44 is damn high
  • 3 1
 Just 40cm's more?!?!

Hah. That's over a foot more.
  • 6 2
So, 29" wheels make it easier to clear obstacles, right?
  • 6 3
I guess it's good for this guy that bmxers don't care about world records...
  • 4 0
Side hops and bunny hops are a whole different game. I respect the shit out of this guy for getting a side hop that high but it's just not comparable with a straight rolling bunny hop. Especially when most bmx riders are hoping over handrails and not a break away set up.
  • 4 1
Martin Soderstrom bunny hopped 4 feet in Sea Otter, 2012. On a 26" Slopestyle bike. Just 8" shy of this record
  • 8 0
 just 8" is a lot

I just realized that I setted me up for some pretty easy jokes hahaha

This dude probably just bunny hops over downed tree on his normal trail ride
  • 2 2
Impossibru!!!! My record is 0.95m and I can't imagine how people can jump higher. What kind of techniqe they use? Some devices that messess up gravity or what? I can't jump that high on foot!
  • 1 1
I bunny hopped that high onto a ledge once, my wheel wasnt that high but forced itself up by stretching my groin, didnt feel good....
  • 7 6
Are clipless pedals allowed? I wonder if they'd go even higher.
  • 19 2
By clipless you mean the ones you're clipped into right?
No, they would not help the hopping. Unless you're doing it wrong.
  • 3 3
Boost might give them the extra boost they need to break this new record...
  • 3 2
 Video or it didn't happen.
  • 3 2
 .......and NO video?! So stupid!
  • 1 0
The plus tire at the rear does the trick.
  • 1 0
I've no doubt that a massive tyre combined with rims that are drilled out will give extra bounce. You could also conceivably come up with a suspension system on a ratchet that you could release in one burst to fire you over as well. But I'm sure they're not specifying pressures or tyre widths.

What a time to be alive.
  • 1 0
Now Danny Mcaskill needs to break the new record
  • 1 0
This needs to be made into an Olympic sport!

Bet he was using the American bunny hop. 'Murica!
