The Second Coming: Qualification - Lourdes DH World Cup 2016

Loic Bruni showed just why he is in the rainbow stripes today. While most others fought hard to navigate this track, the Frenchman seemed to hover and skip across the muck and the rocks with such grace that one could think that he was indeed divine. Loic qualified almost six seconds up on the rest of the field. With the field so shuffled this year there is sure to be some catching up and adjusting, but Bruni has already arrived. Aaron Gwin, the man who dominated Lourdes last year found himself in tenth after a crash. Josh Bryceland was second followed by Gee Atherton around a second back. Today also saw Steve Smith looking back to brilliance, and Brendan Fairclough continuing the fine form he concluded last year with. Loris Vergier had an incredible ride today even with a tumble. Most riders didn't make it down without incident. All seemed to come across the line with a smear of Lourdes wet soil on them somewhere.

Tahnee Seagrave came out swinging like an angry nun with a finish at the top spot after suffering a quick off. World Champ Rachel Atherton came in second three seconds back and Manon Carpenter took third. The Junior men's top spot was taken by privateer Frenchman, Kevin Marry. British lads, Matt Walker and Charlie Hatton took second and third. Top junior, Jackson Frew, took fifth today. Weather looks like it might be stabilizing tomorrow, so riders might be able to put more on the line rather than trying to just make it down safe. For now, we will have to speculate and wait for the final judgment.

Hannah broke her chain... It s happening more and more often or its just me ??
  • + 25
I was just about to comment on this. All the marketing bullcrap we hear from these manufacturers and 120 pound Tracey Hannah busts what was most likely a brand new chain leaving the gate. Unlucky for her, but shameful for whoever made that chain.
  • - 2
@shoprat: it's all this 11 speed crap. They should honestly be running burly 9 speed chains.
  • + 1
But what about the Eagle chains that are supposed to be X times stronger than their predecessors?
  • + 11
what a lot of rot. a bigger chain is a stronger chain. You wouldn't see an eagle chain on a GSX-R 1000
  • + 5
@dk1996: The Polygon team run 7-speed Box Components rear mechs with 10 speed chains
  • + 3
@dk1996: is anyone at this level running 11 speed?
  • + 18
I've read that mechanics will put on a brand new chain for quali and race runs. Seems to me that it would be better to put on a newish, but tested chain.
  • - 1
@shoprat: If you look at her jersey on her right side, it looks like the Sram M is showing.
  • + 0
 @ColquhounerHooner: My thoughts exactly.
  • + 0
A piece of string is stronger than any sram chain
  • + 8
@codypup: Everyone who runs a sram 7speed DH system is running an 11 speed chain (the spacing between cogs is the same but with less cogs).
  • + 3
When Gwin broke his chain at Leogang last year, John Hall instantly thought it was his fault not Sram's. A mechanic is the one who installs the chain and therefore the last one to touch it. So, if he makes a mistake with a pin or clip, it's not exactly Sram or Shimano's fault. There can be more to a mechanical failure than a faulty product, just saying.

 @racealot: thanks for that
  • + 28
I am so incredibly impressed at both the quality and quantity of this race coverage. Pinkbike has stepped their game up in a big way. I would LOVE to see some more video footage like a half-hour daily recap with two or three hosts. It would be a great extension from the live stream and something I would actually pay for. Since Red Bull is the title sponsor, I'd love for there to be a way to upload your UPC code of a can to gain access. I'd purchase a blue and silver bullet for that anyway.

Rode Dunedin dh track in NZ in super thick mud, slid most of it on my arse, rear wheel completely jammed stopped and bike became so heavy I could hardly lift it anymore, amazing respect to what these guys achieve and how they keep the mud off is incredible! Kinda hoping Danny Hart pulls out another 'ride it like its dry' run again this round!

sam pick it up or your off my fantasy team
  • + 5
No way!!! Sam was a steal at 150
  • + 2
Worlds are in Val Di Sol again this year. Sam's chance at redemption. I think it would be safe to say that all of his energy is being put on that 1 race. His chance for redemption for the finish line crash. He's on my team too, but I cant see him getting any podiums this year. Maybe some top 10s, either way I hope Worlds count on fantasy league as 2 regular races because watch out!
  • + 1
Mate, I have Matt Walker on my fantasy team. He DNS'ed. Gutted.

It's articles like this that put the qualifying results into perspective. Can't wait until tomorrow morning...
  • + 2
I don't know how you could stop teams from filming all their competitors. I'm sure lots of the top teams do it but providing your riders with a film of all your competitors creative lines must give them a big advantage.

Their systematic approach to plagiarism as part of their race strategy just doesn't feel ethically right to me.... Or maybe it's not that big a deal?

I'm just an armchair critic with limited experience so I'd be interested to hear pro riders opinions on this issue.
  • + 2
I probably come off as a dick saying this...
Why are all the photos so zoomed in? I feel like the pics were done better last year, with much wider shots, and you could put the rider into context. A zoomed in pic where all I can see is the rider is nice for maybe one or two shots, but it doesn't show enough of the track.

any chance of an end to all the holy this holy that water related stuff please? We know where the race is being held now. Cheers
  • + 2
How are people still breaking chains out of the gate?!? Good luck to Tracey on her run..
  • + 2
My theory, with a small block cassette the chain doesn't have much engagement while shifting. While the chain is crossing the cogs. A LOT of power is going through a few unengaged links, that could be taking the load on the side plates Rather than fully hooked on the teeth with the load on the roller maybe?

See it in 4X, I'm thinking of going up in teeth count but still keeping a short block for less stress on the chain. BMX racers are on to something there
  • + 2
I'm having a hard time keeping up with all the great coverage. Thanks alot Dave, Matt and Nathan!
