I gopro occasional rides when I want to watch footage of someone doing things that look wayyyy smaller than they felt at the time.
  • + 1
 So true :-))))

Yeah, riding with helmet mounted gopro and you look stupid, chest mounted gopro and you can't see s**t on rough terrain... So i went with sony action cam and gopro chest mount. F***ing perfect Big Grin

I don't use anything. I feel like some apps have made riding more competitive and people are using it for the wrong reasons so I deleted all the ones I had. Don't have anything against them, I just want to make sure that I ride my bike because I want to.

I used to track everything like a religious nut. Got rid of all of it and I can't believe how much more I enjoy my rides. When people ask, "how many miles we done?" I just respond, "dunno, lots."
  • + 3
Got rid of the cycle computer on my road bike probably 10+ years ago and realized how much more I was seeing and enjoying the ride. Have never had even a remote itch to use any kind of quantitative measuring device on the trail... not even a watch. (Unless, of course, the battery-life indicator on my headlamp might be considered a 'quantitative measuring device'. Though the first I notice that it is down is when the light goes into walkout mode.)

Just looked down through the comments and props. Many many short responses with device and app with only the original +1, most of the posts with multiple props seem to be those focusing on enjoyment of the ride rather than the technology.

Thats true, but that wasnt what the question asked, it didnt say IF you track your rides what device do you use? I read it as a question for those who track their rides, how do you do it.

When I go out with my mates on my DH or AM bike I have no interest in tracking what I do, just ride to have fun as you say, but I also commute by bike and ride XC and a few XC races, so when training I track my ride with strava.

I do a lot of of adventure rides I like the mapping on the strava Iphone app it has helped me not get lost. I also like that mapping part just to see where I rode. or I just push click put it in the pocket and go ride bikes with friends. no big deal for me.

i don't need a device to tell me how much fun i had on a ride!

I've befriended a Raven, he times my runs and then results are documented by squirrel tribunal. Only costs me s small bag of trail mix.
  • + 12
Don't know if I'd really trust the squirrels. Judging by the number I see flattened on the roads around here, they're not that good at reckoning distance or decision making.

Garmin edge 800, with HR and cadence sensors when racing/serious training. Upload to strava for performance analysis. OSM maps are free, well detailed and have every pub in the world as POIs, big fan.
  • + 3
POI are key!! gotta love being out somewhere new and wanting a brew....hello Garmin, wheres the nearest wateringhole?
  • + 6
Garmin Edge 500 +HR SPD/CAD. Upload to Strava.

There seems to be a lot of haters here on ride tracking. Contrary to popular belief even though I track I still enjoy my rides a lot. But riding for fun is not my only goal its also my primary work out so working hard on a few training rides a week and seeing how it pays dividends on my ride nights and week rides is awesome. I have gone from just making a 20km ride thinking I wanted to die when I got off the trail head to riding 40k not feeling to bad and maybe trying to squeeze a little more in cause hey I can. Doubling your pleasure ride = double you fun any way I can look at it. It all equals more descents, drops, jumps and what ever technical goodness you can squeeze in.

I also rode 25k with my 9yr old son yesterday and I tracked it, we did a tour around town to 6 different playgrounds and played tag with him at all of them.. and the fact I had a GPS on my bike didn't stop either of us from having a blast while he explored new trails and played his brains out.

Having tech doesn't mean you don't enjoy your ride... unless you don't know how to use it.

Map my ride on occasion, Strava other times Garmin at all times. I like a back up on data, keeps me honest, it felt like 20 miles but the puter says 11. I also like keep a record of my trails and sometimes turn them in to rides to share with others, waypoints for turns etc all good fun.
  • + 5
Nothing, just get on my bike and ride, sometimes know where I'm going sometimes I don't.sometimes tired, sometimes not

Hybrid for commuting - cycle computer to keep a general log of total distance travelled, purely for interest. 600 miles down, 400 to go befor eI have to change the oil in my Alfine hub.

Strava on a smartphone occasionally for a big ride, again to keep a general tally of distance and elevation gained etc. Once Strava is recording the phone goes in the bottom of the backpack and doesn't come back out until it's all over. It's good for interest and I haven't got many Strava friends (awwww I hear you all say) so it doesn't get all competitive.

As per a lot of people the grin factor is a much more scientific and calibrated way to 'measure' a ride, big grin = great ride Big Grin

Garmin Edge 705. I like to compare times for my favorite trails and maybe find out what makes the most difference. On my favorite local loop (23 miles and about 2000 ft climbing (and of course 2000 descending)), I had a personal best on a 38 lb bike. Over two years later I finally beat that time by 1 minute (about 1%) on a 30 lb bike.

Samsung Xcover 2 running Alpine Quest. Route saved as GPX after ride and imported into Strava on the PC. Not lost a ride this way. Found Strava alone on the phone was far too unreliable.

Whatever happened to just riding to ride, next thing you know bikes are gonna have built in touch screens in the frame so you can track everything. I prefer to just ride but I occasionally track rides on hook it.com
  • + 2
normally use my brain, which doesnt work too well when you transfer like 4 trails on your pedal up to ride.

sounds like i gotta try this strava, is it free??
  • + 1
 yep Smile its really good

Garmin Edge 500 and Strava. My job pays 10 cents a mile no matter what we ride, road, mtb, cx, bmx, commute, anything. So keeping track of all riding literally pays....
  • + 7
 Where do you work?!?
  • + 2
LBS. Deals on bikes and parts AND pay for them with miles ridden....I guess getting s$!# wages is worth something after all.... Wink
  • + 1
Well to be honest I think its hardly enough to replace worn out gear, but still a cool idea. Big Grin
  • + 1
Garmin Edge 800 with HR sensor + Stages Power meter on my MTB, Garmin Edge 800 with HR sensor + Cadence and Speed sensors on my road/CX bike. I always upload it to Strava as well. Wink
  • + 1
Garmin Edge 800 with Garmin Connect and Strava. Strava is prett inaccurate for elevation climbed so I usually have to correct the ride data. The maps are super helpful when riding in back country areas.
  • + 1
Urgh I do have an edge 800 as well as a forerunner 620 but to be honest most of the time I dont bother. Just wanna get out and ride....
  • + 1
My rides are commonly where there is no, or intermittent cell phone service. I also don't really care, just go until I get tired, then head for home.
  • + 1
How muddy my bike is. How muddy I am. How many cuts I have. What part of my body is sore. How many 5-gal buckets of dirt I moved. ... speedometer if its on the road.
