Danny MacAskill’s Bike Setup for A Wee Day Out

by Pinkbike Staff
Mountain bikers spend a load of time talking about bike setup this, and bike setup that, and there's not much point denying that there is an interest in how the pro riders set up their bikes. However, a lot of that curiosity is more commonly steered at the downhill and enduro bikes of our favorite riders, or those that ride the same equipment at least, but have you ever wondered what someone like Chris Akrigg or Danny MacAskill does for setup?

This is by no means a thorough look at how Danny had his bike set up for his latest video, A Wee Day Out, but it's always interesting to see what other riders do (or don't do for that matter) when it comes to bike setup. Considering that Danny rides off obstacles that 99% of us mere mortals would never even dream of, his setup is going to be quite different to the rest of us, but it's interesting in any case.

bigquotesIt's incredibly strong—it's been run over by a 450kg hay bale multiple times and thrown off so many drops. It's definitely held up way better than I could have hoped for. – Danny MacAskill

No wonder I can't ride like him. My reverb is only 125mm not 130mm. That extra 5mm makes all the difference

 Rookie mistake.

I thought he was running ~150mm of suspension just from estimating, and watching it go through travel many, many times in the video. You'd think I could estimate better by now after seeing so much bike suspension in my life.

Also our last names do not have "skill" in them. Damn, can't even imagine how good I would be if I had that.
  • 2 0
@scottay2hottay: And now imagine you had A-skills instead of B-skills like us mere mortals...
  • 2 0
Maybe? As noted below, we're trying to get more details on Danny's settings. Will update you as soon as we have them!

It seems to me most (including me) would be more interested in his suspension set-up (weight to spacers, rebound, compression), bar stack, tire pressure, etc than what bars he is running.

well guess I should have watched the video, just thought it was the video, not a video on bike setup. Dumb me.

I think Danny's suspension setup would be of no interrest to most people because he tunes his suspension for one or 2 big impacts to not bounce him off the bike, while the rest of us are riding down mountains that require multiple small hits to be filtered.

Digging the magura brakes he uses with custom levers as mentioned in a previous pb article and them stealth black carbon rims! Boner guaranteed #passthevaseline

Interestingly he wasn't using Hope hubs. I thought he was on the Hope train and had been for years. He must have got off in America and picked up a deal with Industry Nine.

@samfr1000: More interesting that the I9 is a freecoaster as seen on top of the hay bales @ 1:25 in the original video. I came here to see what hub he was using in that scene, came up with nothing.

@sd351: A similar thought crossed my mind when I originally watched it but then I just assumed he had the bike in a really high gear. Therefore meaning he wouldn't have to pedal backwards as much.
It was a very quick scene and the crashes didn't do anything to help me work out what he was doing.
I'll have to watch the original video again and see if there's some hopping going on. He could always be using the old Aaron Chase method. Removing the highest gears from the cassette and replacing it with a bit of plastic pipe.

@sd351: It's not a freecoaster. If you watch the 'making of' videos on YouTube, he remove the pawls from the freehub body for that scene.

@sd351 @gibbon-on-an-orange: Well there we go. I wasn't too far off with the old school Aaron Chase set up.

You to can be like me... If your a absolute gifted lunatic.......

high pressure, float dps, 130mm.. takes jumps i wouldnt take on a 200mm dh bike ;-)
  • 8 1
he would do them on his hardtail.....

 @Lagr1980:

Yep, his legs do all the work Smile

I don't need these tech vids about how to tune my suspension. Make the seat come back up slower than your elbow. Make the forks bounce. And from the GOAT, throw the bike around and the wheel should stay on the ground. So easy and simple.
  • 3 1
Nice to know but suspension set up will not make any difference, Still will not be able to do any of stuff he can
What setting did he use to spin round top of a post on his pedal?
  • 6 1
Skill and practice maxed out at 300
  • 4 1
if you were listening he said "make the seat come back slower than your elbow. Make the forks bounce"
  • 3 1
@mudmandhbrazil you're still using 2 fingers? I had no problem using on new xt's and I have short fingers...

man are you kidding? I use one finger since my first hydraulic brakes back in 1999. I just think the commentary about one finger was completly unnecessary.

@mudmandhbrazil: He was just putting in a crafty plug on his ridiculously expensive signature brakes
  • 4 2
I was hoping for suspension specs....ballpark 160 psi in front 300 out back?
  • 7 0
I agree, it would've been nicer if there were more details like this.
  • 4 3
if you were listening he said "make the seat come back slower than your elbow. Make the forks bounce"
  • 2 1
@Racerxd: that should do, isn't it?
  • 3 3
Pb missed a trick by not linking through to the original video too- I'm going to have to type it in to search for it now. Ridiculous in this day and age that I have to press more than one button!!! Haha

hes pretty much ridding a pogo stick
  • 2 1
Pogo stick front slow rebound rear means no bucking over the bars.
  • 4 2
5010 must be the dope bike, as Ratboy and Danny are all over it.
  • 8 0
They would make a Mongoose from Walmart look dope!
  • 1 0
I have a brand new 5010 and it is dope as F.
  • 3 1
I wonder if his setup is any different when he goes into "submarine" mode?
  • 1 0
As the miss says it's not what you ride it's how you ride it???? yeah whatever hahaha..

Why would he lie? Everyone knows carbon bikes are made of pixie dust and cobwebs and shatter if you look at them wrong!
  • 6 3
Keep it real. Ride steel :-)
  • 1 4
@Scottybike36: maybe next recession l! Wink
  • 1 3
@Scottybike36: Because the picnic table landing of Bridge Gap has a steel frame...this would be a good setup for a Shootout. Attach a 165 lb weight to various frames equipped with same wheels and suspension and begin crossing the gap. Greatest number of crossing prior to failure wins. 5010 vs Scout carb vs Camber carb vs Cotic Flare etc. Table can be removed for Transition models since they have HTF technology. Hardtails and bmx?--why not. Though the weight will have to be provided with ankle insurance. I'm curious about the 'black carbon rims,' surely a missed marketing opportunity there. SC into carbon rim/wheel fray? Probably.
  • 1 3
All the down votes from idiots who bought carbon fibre bikes.... what a bunch of marketing slaves who will never be good enough to use a carbon bike!

 I want it!
