by Five Ten

Danny MacAskill has joined forces with friends old and new in a celebration of the humble wheelie.

In the summer of 2021 Danny MacAskill put out a call to action to his 3.5 million social media fans asking them to #WheelieWithDanny. Riders and fans applied from around the world to feature alongside Danny in his latest project from adidas Five Ten and Cut Media. Join Danny MacAskill and a host of friends as he pushes the boundaries of the humble wheelie and learns a thing or two from friends old and new.

 DoAWheelie from adidas Five Ten

There is something instinctive built into us humans, a force that it is within us all, no matter our age. From the first moment we put a leg over the frame of a bike and begin to pedal something takes over, we are drawn to tug on the handlebars and lift the front wheel off the ground. The endorphins rush and a sense of shock turns to a smile – this is how it often begins, doing a wheelie for the first time. The humble wheelie is a gateway into a whole new world that for many will become a lifelong passion. For Danny MacAskill his first wheelie would be the start of an incredible career, in his latest film ‘Do A Wheelie’, Danny shows just how much he loves some back wheel action.

Working in partnership with adidas Five Ten, Danny MacAskill has seen the explosion in popularity in cycling and wanted the opportunity to make a film that would showcase a collective of incredible talent from around the world, old and new. With his social fans ready to engage with, this was his first point of call. Through a series of social call outs Danny asked his fans to #wheeliewithdanny and the response was jaw dropping. A simple scan of the hashtag and you will see the wheelie taken to the extreme and embraced by all ages. After long deliberation, Danny was set to choose several winners to be the stars of his latest film.

bigquotesI’ve followed Danny on Instagram and his riding is insane, when I saw the #wheeliewithdanny competition I had to get involved. I’m not a trials rider but we are all about pushing the limits of what we can do on the back wheel and reckoned we could even teach Danny a thing or two.@SendItBrad’ (#WheelieWithDanny Winner)

With the new breed of riders in the mix, Danny wanted to showcase the other end of the spectrum and knew he had to reach out to his personal childhood hero, Hans Rey. Hans is a former trials World Champion, Five Ten teammate and legend of the mountain bike industry. At 55 years old he is not slowing down one bit and a testament to the sport of mountain biking being for all ages.

bigquotesDanny MacAskill has pushed the boundaries of the sport beyond what I could have ever imagined possible, but just like him, it started with that first wheelie for me too. I jumped at the chance to join Danny and help share our love of some back wheel action.Hans Rey

The wheelie however is not exclusive to the mountain bike world and is embraced by all cycling disciplines and Danny wanted to share this with the world and knew exactly who to reach out to. Viola Brand is a social sensation in her own right, famed for incredible performances as an artistic cyclist, performing mind melting routines on her fixed gear bike.

bigquotesMy sport is definitely not as well-known as Mountain Biking but when I got the call from Danny I knew this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. Danny is an incredibly talented athlete and to feature alongside him and show the world how I embrace the wheelie was special and we have more in common than not. We love bikes.Viola Brand

Don’t be fooled by the title of Danny’s latest film, ‘Do A Wheelie’, there is a lot more on offer. You can expect to see a collection of tricks, incredible feats of skill and world firsts that Danny has become famous for. As MacAskill ventures through a series of iconic Scottish locations, he pushes the boundaries of his riding across all types of bikes as well as being joined by a cast of riders who put Danny’s riding to the test.

bigquotesI have seen first-hand the popularity of bike riding explode over the last few years and it puts a smile on my face to see so many people loving getting outside on their bikes. Working with adidas Five Ten, we wanted to make a film that included as many types of riding as possible and let other riders become the star of the film. The wheelie was the best place to start, if you can ride a bike, you can have a good go at doing a wheelie and from there the opportunities are endless. We wanted to celebrate the wheelie, show how accessible riding bikes can be and put a smile on peoples faces. If someone picks up a bike and has a big grin trying to wheelie, then job done.Danny MacAskill

bigquotesIt’s been incredible to collaborate with Danny again. We’ve worked together a lot over the years and each time, we aim to push the boundaries and do something different. Bringing such a diverse range of talent together was super exciting, and amazing to see the variety of skills as everyone brought their own twist to the classic wheelie. We had such a good time making this – we hope it’s as much fun to watch!Stu Thomson, Cut Media

Mountain biking has become more popular by the day and participation is currently at an all-time high for this amazing sport. However, you do not need a mountain or a bike park to get out and enjoy your bike. The wheelie is, for many, the first thing they will ever learn on a bike, but it can open the doors to an entire new world.

Joining forces, adidas Five Ten and Danny MacAskill want to share their passion for cycling. In this latest collaboration they showcase how the humble wheelie has brought riders together from around the world in their love of bikes. Once again, Danny MacAskill is set to amaze riders and fans around the world in this latest production.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such an overwhelmingly positive response to a video in all my days on Pinkbike. That in itself is refreshing and gives me hope for humanity.

practice practice practice. It takes a lot of it

I decided to learn to do a wheelie when I turned 40...after riding my whole life. I'm still not great at it, but I keep getting better the more I do it. I think some people just innately understand it. They have an inborn talent for it. I do not.

If you're looking for a tutorial to learn solid wheelies check out Ryan Leech's website. I feel like every other one is a 5-10 minute YouTube vid that has a few pointers with the rest being, "just wheelie better lmao". Ryan's website/wheelie course is very broken down and clearly explained at each step. It's great this way rather than trying to learn everything at once. It definitely takes patience and practice but is worth the payoff.

It was free on his website at the start of the pandy but I'm unsure if it still is. However I'd say it's certainly worth paying for if you really want to learn wheelies.
  • 3 1
@lncorgnito: Second rec for the Ryan Leech website - it's got me up on the back wheel, just about holding a manual and fully bunny-hopping. It's taken about two year's of dedicated practice to get there - but I am old and chicken!
  • 2 0
Me, 25 years riding bikes and never beyond 4 meters :'(
  • 3 1
@lncorgnito: I also have to shout out Ryan’s page! I did the free 30 day challenege you mentioned and many other courses afterwards. As you wrote, he has it nicely broken down to pieces, however, it also forces you to dedicate your time to practice the skill and it seems that muscle memory is very important in learning the wheelie. That doesn’t come in matter of hours or days and that’s why wheelie takes a lot of practice. If anyone wants to learn wheelie and the 10 minute videos didn’t do the job, just check the Ryan’s page. And be patient, it will come!
  • 2 0
Yeah I can't get on the back wheel to save my life, never been able to. Wheelies, manuals all impossible to me. I can just about bunny hope but not great at it
  • 1 0
@lncorgnito: Ryan leech wheelies with his seat up though.

Love the Ali C cameo - arguably steeling the show a bit too on the Cargo bike (I thought there was camera trickery at play given that immediately afterwards Danny's bike is shown doing a wheelie without a rider... but then from the outtakes at the end prove otherwise)

All round a great feel-good video that made me want to go out and do wheelies!
  • 8 0
Indeed. I do like wheelies a lot and got the exact same cargo bike Ali is wheelieing but it is absolutely unimaginable to pick up that front wheel. Outstanding bike control AC!
  • 5 0
There was some trickery during the first part with Hans Rey as that was a section from 30 odd years ago!
  • 1 0
Agree, because of the editing I was wondering if the real things where done for real.
  • 21 0
I'M 55 now and can still ride a bit of a wheelie on my 29er but back in the 80s as a bmxer-teenager i could literally ride one for as long and as far as I wanted on my bmx bike, turn in circles, one handed, etc.. I grew up in a small town and riding around sometimes all of a sudden i'd hear someone shout " hey wheelie kid, do a wheelie!"

Point is, there's just something about a wheelie that puts smiles on peoples faces, even if they have no real interest in cycling.
  • 6 0
For sure. Whenever I see a little kid looking at me the front wheel goes up.
  • 3 0
Learning to wheelie more or less indefinitely was one of the coolest things I learned to do as a kid. Spot on with the smiles!!

Rad he's got the kids in it, they never get enough credit. What a cool video makes me wanna ride up and down the block poppin dank whoolies all day
  • 3 0
That "wheelie kid" scene is great to watch, saw a bunch riding the north bank of the Thames in London a few weekends ago, carving on the back wheel in and out of traffic, absolute mayhem, so much skill and a lot of risk in what was fairly free flowing traffic. There's something very straight up anarchic about it, I mean they were a danger to themselves and anyone else on the road around them, but then so are all those borisbike commuters on their phones the first day the sun shines.
  • 1 0
@Steventux: they’re called suicide swerves. They like to ride at people and cars before swerving at last minute before wheeling off laughing after frightening or enraging whoever it is they swerved at.
  • 9 0
That video made me so happy. Thanks Danny and to all the many others involved, that was really special.

 Couple random thoughts on this:

1. Great to see such an overwhelmingly positive response to a video on Pinkbike. It’s good to know something can make us all so happy. Mark of success right there.
2. I really appreciate the German-speaking ladies on the artistic fixies.
3. Danny Mac might have, from top to bottom, the most enjoyable soundtrack from all his videos.

I'm impressed by the fact that I just enjoyed watching 5 minutes of wheelying! Great riding obviously, but excellent creative direction and production. Not my type of music normally, but it worked well. My favourite part was seeing Hans Rey in there!

I love it! Brings tears of joy to my eyes. An excellent song choice too. Thank you Danny and all the other participants for making my Day! Peace

What a fun video, way to showcase so many other riders. And the bloopers and outtakes are still magical.

Now when my Chameleon comes in that's been on order for 8 months I'll instantly be able to ride a wheelie like that, right?
  • 1 0
I made wheelies a lockdown project way back in the spring of 2020, just back and forth in front of my house. I'm better than I've ever been, but I still haven't unlocked the magic of just riding a damn wheelie. More practice today. I also own a big front loader cargo bike... That wheelie is NO JOKE.
  • 1 0
LOL I always watch his vids and think "Yeah but if I had a cool trials bike I could do all this stuff". Then Danny (and everyone else in the video) proceeds to do all this cool stuff on hardtails/gravel/cargo/mtb, and I'm reminded yet again it's a lack of skill not equipment. Great vid!

What a fucking beautiful little film, full of absolute joy from start to finish!

In the credits at the end of the video the executive producer is Stu Thompson. Does anybody know if this is the same Stu Thompson that raced for Red Line & SE back in the 70s and 80s ?

 Not the same person

Danny just moved to the wheelieverse.

This is black magic. Straight wizardry. If this were anther time period, Danny would be burned at the stake. I'm going to go pedal my bike now with both wheels firmly planted in the dirt.

You know, unfortunately in this day and age when I see that a video is 5 minutes long I will click through and skim the highlights. This is never the case with a Danny M video though! Super entertaining throughout.
  • 3 0
Well that was fun! Watched it earlier today and still have a smile on my face. Probably will tmrw too. Thanks for that.

Nice to see a Raleigh Chopper in there. I learned to wheelie on one in the late seventies/early eighties. I'm fat and 52 now but still wheelie pretty well.
My MTB doesn't snap steerer bolts like the chopper used to....
