Spotted: Theo Galy's Prototype Devinci Spartan

Theo Galy Prototype Devinci Spartan

It looks like Devinci has a new enduro race bike on the way, likely the next generation of the Spartan, if team rider Theo Galy's weapon of choice for this weekend's EWS race in Millau, France, is any indication.

Theo's unmarked black carbon frame is rolling on 27.5" wheels and still appears to use a Split Pivot suspension layout, but the trunnion mounted shock is now oriented vertically, which leaves room inside the front triangle for mounting a water bottle cage, a welcome change from the previous version. It's tough to tell for certain due to the mud spackling, but it sure looks like the chainstays are now carbon rather than alloy.

Devinci were mum on specifics about the bike, but it's easy to imagine it's slacker and longer then the prior model, which had a 65.8-degree head angle and a 432mm reach for a size large, numbers that are on the more conservative side of things for this style of bike.

It looks like there's plenty of tire clearance, as well as room to run a larger chainring without contacting the chainstay.

The Spartan currently has 165mm of rear travel, and the burly-looking new model likely has a similar amount of rear squish.

Another same looking bike, not that it looks bad mind you. If it works it works

@Boardlife69: Looks like a 2014 Trek Slash. This thing is probably all profit - no thought included.

@src248 - I was just thinking the same. Maybe it's asking too much, but I'd really like to see someone shake things up a bit. Kinda like how Specialized did on the new Demo. Or like how Specialized did on the SWAT door. Or like... well, you get the point.

@cwatt: you can buy the new polygon or the new marin if you like weird stuff

 @cwatt: that you love specialized?

A bike which is designed around a water bottle.
  • 2 5
I should expand on my post. The Troy doesn't suffer from the shock link flexing the shock out, causing it to lose air pressure. This should be a stiffer design that doesn't suffer from that, and should have more updated geo. It will be a nicer bike, because the Troy is simply a better bike than the spartan as it stands, in terms of it's design.

You had me at water bottle cage.
  • 8 0
Seems like bike manufacturers are going to great lengths to fit water bottles lately.
  • 24 2
@NotAnotherClimb: I think that if you went back to 2012 and someone had a water bottle cage on their trail bike they'd be mocked ruthlessly. Then some review comes out where a bike manufacturer has the audacity to not have a water bottle cage option and everyone loses their collective shit.
  • 10 0
@Rucker10: Do you remember how 180mm single-crown forks came. Then disappeared. Then slowly reappeard.
  • 12 0
Honestly, given how many good bikes fit a bottle within the front triangle, I don't think I'd buy a bike that couldn't unless it was either really cheap or much, much better. Some people don't care about this design element, but many people do. Manufacturers are missing out on sales if they don't work it into their design.
  • 13 0
@cwatt: I do remember that. I also remember how the 160-180mm bikes were the quiver killers, then the 150mm bikes were the quiver killers, then the slack 110-130mm 29er's were the quiver killers. Now any one of those are the quiver killers but only if they have a water bottle cage option.

The most amusing thing to me is that when you go to a race event everyone just tapes all their shit to the bike in a bunch of random places anyways.

This! Loved my Troy but wanted a bigger bike a year or so ago, would have loved a spartan but no place for a bottle, I could be going back!

@NotAnotherClimb: Im telling ya man, it's global warming. It gets so hot on the rides these days and having water within arm's reach is such a plus!

Press fit BB. On a prototype. Looks like we're not out of the woods quite yet with this misery.
  • 1 2
Doesn't matter any more with thread-in press fit BB's.
  • 2 0
You have experienced problems with your press fit BB?

It's not a Horst Link. It is DW Split Pivot. Horst needs to be below and in front of the rear axle. This pivots around the rear axle.
  • 1 3
Is it the crappy pics or...??? All I see is a single pivot (solid one piece chainstay),,,a fixed axle path
  • 2 4
Nevermind me...Split Pivot, check. I just always consider axle path first, everything else is secondary and thirdondary to the action etc..... haha

@loopie: tertiary is the word you're looking for /grammarpolice
  • 3 1
@radyum: I know where the word is...I prefer to use goofy words in casual conversation. That's how I roll and you can't tease me about it cuz my Mom told me I'm special and can do anything I want if I apply myself. Smile

Why the hell is he using a guide lever for his dropper??? Talk about bar clutter.
  • 2 1
Wow. Good catch. Yeah, there are a bunch of really good post-levers out there. That's massive overkill.
  • 1 0
I'd like to know the answer to this too... bars are cluttered enough these days, the last thing we need is multiple brake levers per side!
  • 5 0
That's not a Guide lever, it's the new RockShox Reverb remote: www.pinkbike.com/news/rockshox-finally-updates-the-reverb-remote-first-look-2017.html. It might look like a cluttered setup from the front view, but from the saddle it's really clean, and sits right where front shift levers used to live.
  • 1 0
It is the new reverb lever ! But yeah it takes a lot of space.
  • 2 0
@mikekazimer: Oh weird... perspective is everything. From the angle and the way his hand is positioned it totally looked like another guide lever that he was pulling on when the pic got taken. I'm sure you're right in terms of it not feeling cluttered, I just can't get over how big the assembly looks in the pic!
  • 1 0
@BEERandSPOKES it's not a guide lever, it's the new rockshox Reverb lever that looks pretty similar from the backside. It is basically their shifter without the small trigger www.sram.com/rockshox/products/reverb-1x-remote

 Love my Spartan!!
  • 3 0
Same, it's underrated, which is kinda nice cause not many people have em, at least in the states. Rode the new troy too, great bike, but the difference going downhill is shocking, spartan really on another level. Interested to see how the new one pans out.

 Love my Troy
  • 2 0
geometry and looks of the troy are superb but unfortunately no t.i.t.s. and no bsa is a letdown for me
  • 2 5
@funkzander: Whats wrong with push fit? I've seen fewer failures of Pressfit BB installations then threaded BB installations in my last 10 or so years in the bike industry.

Troy with angle headset and 160mm fork. 65 degrees and super fun
  • 1 0
Only issue is the poor paint quality (on black one, I don't know for the others)
  • 1 0
I've got a Wilson and a Troy that will be up for sale immediately when this comes out. I love my wife's Spartan, but I wanted to wait for the second generation.
  • 3 6
You don't have to wait, just get a session now
  • 3 0
I'm waiting for a 29er Troy or spartan
  • 1 0
Might that be a Di type rear mech? The cable looks pretty thin and tightly wrapped around the rear stay. Also no sign of gear cable on bars......

Love the comments. Like hipsters arguing about skinny jeans. Bikes are bikes. Ride them.

 LET IT RIP!

 good.

 Ain't no horst.
  • 1 3
I'm not sure on this new Boxy direction Devinci are taking, i have a 2015 Troy and love it especially with its curvier and sleek look, the new version may of got some good improvements but it just doesn't look as nice, and as much as function beats form we all like drooling over a pretty bike in our garage. Please take note Devinci Wink
