@warmerdamj actually, kids and ebikes are a great pairing. Younger kids can keep up with their older much stronger riding partners ie. mum/dad/siblings etc. It takes the load of their growing bodies, which can be a real issue, and still get fitter and stronger in a way that means they are less injury prown as they get older.
It's like @dirtyburger says above. Define your own fun, not somebody elses.
And that there folks is why some of us protest loudly about ebikes on mountain bike trails. No difference from an electric to gasoline motorcycle. Just a sliding scale perfectly connecting one to the other.
@devlincc: or you could be a good and decent parent and BE A DUCKING PARENT! FFS. This idea that kids need this to keep up with uncaring, lousy adults is horrific reasoning. Be a good parent, ride kid appropriate trails, wait for them, take breaks, you know, be a decent riding partner, but for your kid.
The fact I need to say this says so much about the priorities of some of the riders on here.
@devlincc: get real, what do you think kids and parents have been doing since... Hmmmm.... Forever? Electric assist isn't making kids stronger or less injury prone, that's laughable. Most kids in any kids racing program would crush their parents on a bike. You think little johnny wants to get a real bike after having his ass towed up the hill by a motor for 5 years? Nope.
@theredbike: because British Columbia understands they aren't really bikes. Once you have age limits you should realize it's a motorcycle... Bicycles don't have age limits anywhere in the world.
@no-good-ideas: Would not really agree, friends father has pretty much completely destroyed knee from a motorcycle accident with some 20% mobility left so he has to use custom ~80mm crank and now that he is over 70 ebike is the only thing left for him... so one in about 1000 justified!
@BarryWalstead: @warmerdamj wow, way to completely misconstrue (sp?) the intent. I never said about taking kids on mega hard rides but you stick a 6 or 7 year old on a mtb and go on a ride and they don't last long. Not until they've built up some resiliance. An ebike allows everybody to get a good ride in and for the same reason adults of varying fitness levels can ride together when the weaker rider is on an ebike.
Seriously stop with the hate of ebikes. They enable people to get out and ride together. The fact you can't just let peope enjoy themselves and you judge the way the spend their time says more about you guys than anything about the people who ride ebikes and there is certainly nothing wrong with their choice. You do you.
@devlincc: no, they don't 'enable people to get out and ride together' unless you're talking a motorcycle ride. Which is fin, but it's not riding bicycles.
And you obviously aren't willing tk ride mellow trails, take the breaks needed and be a good parent. And you're butthurt because your selfishness got called out. But it's okay, we can all learn, and you can learn to be a better parent while riding bikes.
@devlincc: what's also interesting is the desire of the 'motors on bicycles' crowd cries really loudly about 'letting us all do whatever is fun' but you want to inherently change this sport into a different sport. Well that sport of motorizing recreation already existed, why you feel the need to hijack this sport into something else is the insanity.
I choose to ride bicycles in the woods, not motorcycles. And I choose to ride on trails built for bicycles, hence the dislike of motorcycles on my trails.
@devlincc: I want to go running with my friend who is really experienced at it but I can't quite keep up with him. Too bad I cant get eshoes. Or maybe some cross country skis with a motorized track on the bottom since I can't ski that fast. If those sound ridiculous to you then so should ebikes. As @BarryWalstead says it's not the same sport, just because you want to go faster or further doesn't mean you just strap a motor on. It means you work harder at it. For commuting or people who physically require it to enjoy the sport- I support that. For everybody else, put some more effort in. I have a ton more respect for somebody who suffers out 10k and is nearly on their death bed from the effort vs somebody who motorized themself to hit 20k.
@BarryWalstead: do you feel better now? Really? You know so much about me. Yeah sure, I'm the selfish arse that held my kid back from the tougher trails so he could progress without hurting himself. Kept rides shorter so he could not be exhausted for the rest of the weekend. Took him to BMX racing and pit crewed for him. Chose to ride with him on instead of going racing or riding with my mates because I wanted to pretend I was a good dad instead of the obvious dick that I am. He now races MX and is bloody good at it and his coaches credit some of his skill from what I taught him riding bmx and mtb. But sure, jump on here and go your hardest at me mate. You obviously know everything about my life.
No one is stopping you from going out and riding your bike in the bush. You're so wound up by teh idea of someone doing it different to you. They aren't the same thing as a motorbike. Way lighter and way slower. You should try to just do your thing. If you come across 'one of those' just comment on teh weather and keep going where you are going. Then you can ride to the top of teh hill under your own steam and be as smug as you like knowing your better than 'one of those' cheaters.
If you value the glory in the suffering then go at it. You can't define someones else enjoyment by setting rules that you want to abide by. Who cares if it isn't the same. Seriously what does it take away from your riding by 'one of those' going about there own business.
I can tell you after 35 years of riding bikes no one cares that you did it the hard way. Theres no envy from others that you are on your death bed just getting to the top of the hill. I don't own an ebike. Just not interested in the extra faffing around with them and the weight. I've ridden them a bit though and they are a hoot. I ride with mates who have them and we have a great time together. We aren't judging each other because of what we choose to ride. We just get out there and ride.
It's like @dirtyburger says above. Define your own fun, not somebody elses.
