Jackson Goldstone's Day Out With Dad - Video

It certainly feels like it’s been a long winter this year. The yearning for perfectly shaped trails, stunning mountain views and getting out there to ride with buddies is huge! Mountain bike rookies and families still have to be patient until the doors to Bikepark Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis open on June 8, but the new clip with Jackson Goldstone, “Day out with Dad”, may provide some relief and certainly create some stoke for the new season ahead. Jackson heads to the family region of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis with his dad Ron to have some fun shredding the trails in and around the bike park. The 14-year-old sure has the ability to show his dad a thing or two about riding bikes. Even though Ron doesn’t quite have the courage to hit the cabin drop, there is always time to learn and take the next step.

Jackson made his way to Austria for the first time to race during the MTB-Festival Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and check out the trails with his dad. “It was awesome to have the chance to go and ride with some really talented and fast kids, and we had a great time”, Jackson remembers.

In the video, both of them first head up to tackle the legendary Frommestrail. The poster child of singletrack riding in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is a natural trail with plenty of flow. After taking the Schönjochbahn to the top and another short incline they reach the Schönjochkreuz at an altitude of about 2,440 meters / 8,005ft. The mountains flanking the Italian border create a stunning panoramic view as they hit the meandering nine-kilometer trail down the mountain, that treats them to a total descent of over 1,000 meters / 3,280ft. in altitude. On their way to the valley below Jackson and Ron are led through alpine terrain and spruce-fir forests paved with roots. “This trail is amazing, it starts up at the top of the mountain and you can see forever. It drops down through some really fast and flowy corners and forest before you get back to the village. I think that this is one of my favorite trails I’ve ever ridden”, the rider from Squamish explains looking back.

But for someone who is already throwing down cork 7’s, action and adrenaline have to be in the cards as well. Time for a spin in the bike park! Normally the grown-up would teach their kid everything there is to know about mountain biking, but roles are reversed in the Goldstone family. Each of them sends it at their own speed using the diverse line choices the trails have to offer. Thanks to the parallel lines they can enjoy the ride together without having to leave their comfort zone, if they don’t wish to. The stoke they have on the numerous wall rides, North Shores and switchbacks of trails like the Hill Bill, Milky Way or Strada del Sole is great to see and Jackson’s irresistible and action-packed riding style is a sight for sore eyes.

If you can’t wait for the off-season to end and are yearning for the season to finally kick-off, you can check out the trails Ron and Jackson rode in the virtual trail map and start planning your trip to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis with friends and family from June 8.

"A day out with dad" for me looks a lot different. Usually just consists of us arguing in Home Depot holding a Tim Hortons.

Haha! This might be the best comment I've ever seen!

What is a Tim Hortons? I need to know to get the joke/comment!

@slimboyjim: Soggy wet doghnuts and terrible coffee. It appears to be a national pastime in Canada, but for the life of me I can’t understand why.
  • 2 0
@carym: Best stick with the soup or maybe the chili, the coffee is only good to soak chains in and the dognuts are not much better, and people actually line up for it, go figure.

It was really nice to see how encouraging Jackson was to his squid dad. I wonder what age Jackson was when he surpassed his father's skills on a bike? It took me until my mid-20's until I could outride my dad (who was nearing 50 at the time). Last October (in celebration of my dad's 60th birthday) we took a trip to Moab. It was a lot of fun to cheer him on while riding the best trails Moab has to offer.

Ron used to have a little travelling BMX quarter pipe ramp show he and his buddy would do back in the mid 80's. Ron used to rock a pretty sweet Skyway TA. Ron, if you're reading, you happen to still have one of those in your garage? You went a lot bigger 30 years ago.

Is it just me or has he been 14 for like 10 years?
  • 2 1
HAHAHA same thing I thought while watching the video!!

Great video! As a father and bike rider.....I truly look forward to getting my young boys on bikes and exploring. They currently have their little tricycles bikes but always ask if they can go ride with me. Soon enough! While the riding/location were amazing, this video hits me from another angle. Super cool seeing a father and son spending time with each other. With all the craziness going on right now and with the wave to technology taking over (topic for another day), truly amazing to see a connection between father/son and exploring via two wheels. Hats off to them two for continuing to ride together, travel together, and continuing to grow their relationship.

I get that same feeling dude.

The father son bike ride is the best feeling.
I have one of my boys riding trails just working with the other one now.

Can’t wait to add to my pictures with the boys.
  • 3 1
Yes! This is the dream for me and my boy!

It is th funniest thing with bikes for me now. Since The Stevie pump tracks opened we have been regulars, and he loves railing berms. Too much fun.
  • 1 0
For sure. With a baby boy due any day now - vids like this, the littlest trail hunter with Matt Hunter and son, and the vids on the Macride site are getting me way more stoked than the latest Semenuk edit or clip de jour.
  • 2 0
Yeah, father and boy... I've got two girls and they love riding with me too! Too bad they rarely show them riding with his big sister anymore. Though my girls love to watch him ride in a video, I know they are inspired even more when they see girls do cool stuff.

Big incentive to stay healthy and fit for at least 10 more years.
  • 6 1
This is amazing. As rad as a brown pow sunny day with buddies is, the days I get out with my son are just do something different to me...extreme happiness plus extreme fulfillment. It's the absolute best.
  • 9 1
I do feel like my youth been a total failure right now.
  • 6 1
 U not alone mate....
  • 6 1
Reminds me of every pre-ride conversation with my kids. "So, is this trail more uphill or downhill..." They still have not bought in to the single track family value of earn your turns.
  • 4 1
One for the fam... Thx PB. My daughter is barely four and cranking around w/no training wheels. It'd be a dream come true if she still likes riding w/dear ol' Dad in 10 years. Shred or no shred, we'll make two-wheel time til' the end.
  • 4 0
Kid's really good but I hope he appreciates riding that bike at that age. My parents thought 150 on a walmart bike was too expensive lol
  • 3 1
I got to say as much as Jackson rips, big props to dad! It has to be so gloriously nerve racking to see your kid go so big, worry for his safety, while knowing how much fun he is having all at the same time. Not all those gray hairs are from age.
  • 4 1
My motivation as a father is to hold my kid off till he is 15, but if my kid is ripping faster than me before then I'll know I did something right. Such great stoke!
  • 4 1
Good luck! My kid passed me when he was around 13. I hope you last longer than that. If not it's not such a bad thing to see your kid shredding.
  • 2 1
Careful trying to keep up as their ability starts to overtake yours. Detached bicep. Broken collar bone . Dislocated hip. All these injuries are trying to tell me something!!!
  • 5 1
Don’t know if i wish to have a dad like him or a son like him. Defo a perfect combo, keep on shredding and inspiring..
  • 3 1
The cutest video I've seen in a while. At my 33, I can see in this video my past and future dreams realized. Big props for this cool pair, kid and father.
  • 7 3
Kid seems like he could go far, @pinkbike you should sponsor him.
  • 3 1
Yeah, maybe give him some stickers to put on his helmet.

This is awesome, building my sons first mountain bike right now and cant wait to ride with him. One of the highlights of my life was riding the Jackson Hole bike park with my son. Following him down those trails is something ill never forget.

First you need to ditch Mary Palm and her five sisters.
  • 5 2
@Staktup: never ditch mary she knows best

I recognize the situation. My son just wants to ride park. I love park riding, but it´s nice to do some trail riding too. But he does not understand the joy in earning your turns.
  • 3 2
 Get him an e-bike.

Remember that one? That was when he was 10... Times change
  • 1 1
Nice to see this. I got to know him from his section on the Seasons 2 disc. He's come a long way since then. I've got a 20" mtb which my girls can take turns on riding with me. They love it! The pumptrack soon to be finished nearby will probably boost their skills beyond mine well before they turn 10. Kids have so much time at that age. Give them the opportunity and some guidance and see them grow. The passion is there. Even when my oldest daughter broke her thumb in a crash, she came home buzzing and pulled out my old Dirt magazine to see how it's done. Completely stoked. I don't need them to be the greatest in some UCI event. I just love them to have a passion that has more attraction than what Silicon Valley can ever come up with. Should be good for SF too. Build trails, not datacenters.

Not taking anything from Jackson, he’s a talented kid. But can we appreciate that Kyle strait was beating top pros and competing at redbull rampage at age 14, and on NWD 3 at at 13? Also, how big the lacondeguy brothers were going when they debut as teenagers. Jackson strider bike videos were next level though.
  • 3 3
Super nice and talented kid. I enjoy watching tires break traction and drift sideways around corners as much as the next guy but I still squirm when I see people skid in corners with their wheel locked up.
  • 5 2
It's a bike park you barney
  • 3 1
My teen sons have never been that encouraging to me! They look for every chance they can get to roast me. Love my boys!
  • 2 1
What is this crap? That kid should clearly be inside playing video games and his dad should clearly be at work or golfing or something.
  • 1 1
Would love to see more like these! Also loved the segment of them in Scott Secco's Builder film! His dad is such an inspiration for a lot of us, can't wait to hang out with my son in the future. #parentinggoals big up!
  • 2 2
HA! Fun. But, is that kid ever gonna grow ? I swear he's been the same size forever. Did riding so young stunt his growth.
Not that his size seems to be holding him back.
  • 4 1
There is no way he's 14, he looks so much younger!
  • 3 1
That's what I say to my wife: no big jumps.
  • 1 1
My Little guy just started walking. He was balancing and pushing his stride bike around before he could walk by himself, Striders FTW! soon Bike rides with Dad.
  • 2 0
I agree , he has serious talent !
  • 1 0
I could do all this if my age and weight would be less than 40! Nah. Definitely not.

  • 4 2
Would someone please think of the corners!!
  • 1 1
Can't wait to get my little dude on a bike! Been doing everything I can to get the stoke high and get him excited about riding bikes.
  • 3 1
What I have learned is that as awesome as we think shredits are, your little one is way more pumped to put their bike in the truck with dad and go to the trails and pump track and whatnot. Show them you love to bike, and make it fun, they will be the best riding partner you could hope for!
