My WBP suggestion: Let me walk around the village with a beer!
  • 34 1
I'm glad they addressed breaking bumps, had no idea they put in that many hours fixing them Thanks for acknowledging, WBP!
  • 20 5
they might have spent that many hours not sure which braking bumps they fixed..

@acetasting1992: what you said!!! They could at least focus in on the heavy use trails, not sure where that 150 hours a week goes? You think you'd see some improvement on at least one of the trails even if it's only for a week or two. Really Whistler... don't brake in the same spot, that's your suggestion?!?!? How about putting up a sign on the trails saying if you're caught dragging brakes for no damn reason other than your scared of going fast, you'll be asked to not ride the more "advanced" trails. I'm fine with big nasty deep braking bumps in certain spots (it's part of riding trails that get use and it makes you a better rider) but when the entire Frikin trail is bumps, it's not from the fast guys slowing down just b4 the turn.... For MX, we have practice sessions where beginners are not allowed on the track and it's enforced, if you're going to slow and you're out with the faster riders, you get flagged off the track, I wish they could apply this same concept towards the advanced trails there.

@Bobafett164: ill be the elephant in the room: its not always the noobs causing braking bumps esp on the more advanced trails. The well seasoned riders, the locals, the pros love roosting through berms or intentionally overshooting stuff then applying brakes in odd sections shortly after. Noobs do their part too, though. AFAIC, stopping this will be largely unenforceable. Unless it becomes taboo in the biking community to behave like this & we start shaming each other for it, you can always look forward to braking bumps @ peak season at whistler.

@anchoricex: 150 hours a week, that's almost 4 dudes at full time job doing just that. Living a dream.

Hey I thought it was E-bikes ruining the trails
  • 8 0
@WAKIdesigns: Not just e-bikes. The carbon E-bikes with tubes in their 29+ tires, ridden by Camelbak carrying dentists who not only take the uplift, but who are so lazy that they also take the cable car down the hill again. These are the worst. Even from not touching the trails, their weight compacts the dirt so that it doesn't absorb water anymore and the tree roots won't be able to penetrate. This changes these trails in fast flowing streams of water taking everything along in its way. Eventually the trees won't have anything to hold on to and flow along as if it were Fulufjallets. Bears will flee from the woods and plunder the restaurants in Whistler village (without paying). The mountain will fall apart and drop into the sea (causing the sea level to rise). The cycling world will burst in tears (causing the sea level to rise even further).

Compared to that, a couple of braking bumps aren't that much of a deal.

Surprisingly I found Golden Triangle had perfect berms. Smooth as silk. For one moment I thought I was in heaven, especially right after riding Blue Velvet.

@milanboy1986: blue velvet during crankworx is pure satan. I honestly thought my fork was broken.

Guess you missed the sarcasm in his voice...

I'm almost certain that Pete is Ron Burgandy and Veronica Corningstone's child..... I'm willing to put money on it.

@Waldon83: Man I thought it was Paul Rudd (Brian Fantana) from the thumbnail.

 @Wamprat: yeah, me too.

Come on Whistler! I am a local and ride a great deal. Trails are in the worst shape I have ever seen. It is getting to the point some trails are unsafe. Berms with holes the size of wheels. I have seen at least 2 riders crash hard in berms and need medical attention. Dirt merchant is terrible and some massive holes on Freight train. I know the trail crew works hard, but hire more guys!! You make a ton of money, put some into fixing trails, not just building new ones.

Note to self: DO NOT GO TO WHISTLER THE WEEKEND AFTER CRANKWORX. That being said, Whistler has always been my lover. Like a lover, there are ups and downs; highs and lows but last weekend was barrel bottom. Sometimes, I think she's stepping out on me with the new dude, Vail. To negate my negativity: Props to D1, Blueberry Bathtub & Cmore. Pleeease Vistler, hire more trail help; my hands hurt bad.

My hands will never be the same again!!

T-Shirts!!! Do it!!!!! (or is your art department up to it? - LOL)

 LOL

Same people complaining about breaking bumps are the people making them. Trail crew can't fix Crankworkx induced breaking bumps when it hasn't rained in months. Give them a break!
  • 6 1
Didn't Pinkbike just post that "10 Hours Daily at the Whistler Bike Park - Video" video where rich kids blowing up berms now they post this? Does Pinkbike want me to blow up berms or not? or is it ok if you make a "good" picture out of it? i'm confused as f*ck now.

It's only ok if you're making a *sick* edit. Otherwise you're dick for doing it, I guess.
  • 7 1
Quickly becoming my favourite series. Highlighting whingers concerns respectfully and with a vast amount of humor.
  • 6 2
Out of curiosity, lets say I have a 10 day vacation planned in Whistler. Since they're so short-staffed, can I volunteer for a day with the trail crew? Might pick up a few tips for my own trails....
  • 9 0
They're not short staffed. There is no water.
  • 2 1
@dangahoesing: there was water for joyride course and building D1. so why no water to fix Dirt merchant or other trails?
  • 4 0
@Andrewlunka: Correct. We have the water to support a limited amount of trails. Hoses, people, access, water supply and the amount of traffic on certain trails. This isn't to mention the dry conditions. This means watering down of the forest in any area that is prone to fires. Chainsaws, machinery, picks and axes sparking off rocks. Trust me, it happens easy. We have to be careful. Joyride is separate to the bike park so they operate on their own. This season has been hard on everyone including the staff. We still have the best park in the World and it'll stay that way. Let's get some rain!
  • 3 0
@dangahoesing: Exactly, filling holes with dust doesn't do much.....
  • 4 0
@Andrewlunka: there's no snowmaking anywhere close to dirt merchant. Trails without snowmaking or a decent flowing creek to pump out of close by pretty much cannot be worked on.
  • 3 1
Super funny! I know they have their work cut out for them.

That said, Blue Velvet has been such a junkshow since the first year it was built, for example. It's such a cool zone and could be truly a trail for everyone to shred but it continually gets neglected. Seems like Dirt Merchant and A-Line get consistent updates but other notables get left behind.

I know lots of newbies drag their brakes down it, but the drainage issues are terrible.

*disclaimer- this is the first year I haven't made it up, perhaps it has improved.
  • 4 5
Give em a brake, they only have so much time money and people!
  • 7 0
@Scotj009: So what. We want them to spend more money hiring more people to spend more time on trail maintenance. They wont do it if we dont ask for it, and if its enough of a PR problem that sales go down. Just consumers letting producers know their preferences.
  • 9 5
Might need Walter White to step in and cook up some, uh, energy bars for the trail crew to increase their work rate...
  • 11 13
Haha are you serious? Pull the wool off from over your eyes champ, all the boys in the trail crew work their asses off day in & day out so people can enjoy the trails, it's only a small team and there's only so many hours in a day.
  • 7 1
 @ethan23: i think hes joking
  • 7 1
@ethan23: And only so much money the bike park want to spend on employing people to fix the trails, they should do volunteer dig days, so many peopple would then realise how hard it is to maintain the trails
  • 3 0
@ethan23: mad respect for trail crew. Hope the mountain hires more of them. Any thoughts on how to encourage the resort to do that?
  • 4 1
@ethan23: Trail crew guys are the bomb, but not enough of them. How much does whistler make in a day? and there are like 15 trail crew......something is not adding up, except Whistlers bank account
  • 2 1
Reminds me of Ron Burgundy. LOL just need a scotch and BAXTER! He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo.
