by Mountain Biking BC

'Ale Trails' is a doc style mini-series looking at the intersection between mountain biking and local craft breweries, and how both work to support and enhance their community. Join us, as we explore the wilds of Northern BC, showcasing the uniqueness of Prince George, Terrace and Smithers, and meeting the proud, passionate locals that call these tight-knit communities home.

Prince George. The largest city in Northern BC has a blossoming craft beer and mountain bike scene. Between its 2 breweries, Trench Brewing & Crossroads Brewery and Distillery, and the constantly expanding Pidherny trail network, there’s enough variety to keep any seasoned rider and craft beer aficionado occupied.

Smithers, nestled in the Bulkley Valley, is driven by a passionate population. It’s trail system, grown from hardcore locals in the 90’s has evolved into a modern network of sustainable all-mountain trails and it’s breweries, Smithers Brewing and Bulkley Valley Brewing, will greet you with the warm atmosphere of the North, and flavours to keep your thirst well and truly quenched.

Terrace has a history of being a very technical location, but over recent years, has utilized grants to expand and create new, mixed ability trails that allow every ability of rider to have fun.
Home to Sherwood Mountain Brewing, the Terrace craft beer scene brings a variety of beer styles and flavours into what has typically been a very Lager based town.

$10,000 dollar bikes and $50 dollar pitchers of organic, free range, hormone free, cholesterol free, hand crafted, artisanal, curated beer. Do I miss the days of cold, wet post ride Molson Drys out of the trunk of one of our cars off the shoulder of some remote highway near an un-mapped, un-marked trail some guy named Jimmy told us about? A bit, but the new model of bike centre with welcome centre/trail signs, maps, small bike shop and pub/restaurant does have it's appeal.

Don't drink and ride kids!

You mean the trail just past the big rock, but before the bend in the road? I remember those days!

@woofer2609: Yep, should only take you about 2hrs, make sure you take a left at the beaver dam...6hrs later with no food or water left you get back to the car only because you hit a dirt road and followed it and actually hit the highway....No: GPS, phones, suspension, garmin/wahoo/strava, carbon, batteries, long /slack, PinkBike how did we survive....

Didn’t realize normal beer had cholesterol in it.

Reminds me of 2007 when we went into a bike shop in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast and the guy there actually drew us a map! Those days were probably better for shops too, as I'm sure we purchased on or two things, rather than just using Trailforks and never asking for local intel.

Don't Drink and Ride...you might spill a drop.

The times, they are a... becoming quite different.

I look back fondly to the mid 90's when I was learning to ride on my brand-new hardtail with gripshift and 2 inches of terrible front suspension, my buddy on a Costco mtn bike, riding hiking trails or in the same area as the dirt bikes. But do I want to go back? not a chance! Amazing bikes, sanctioned trails built for all types of riding, dedicated areas... AND you can still drink cheap beer post ride if that's your thing!

I feel obliged to insist that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a good Lager. (More specifically a German-style Helles or Märzen)
  • 4 0
Its true, I have come to appreciate a märtzen. Most American lagers just don't have anything to them, thus the stigma.

A glimpse of the material to expect behind the paywall, stories on dumbed down trail systems and over complicated beers....all that's missing is a coupon code to jenson and a sprinter van tour. Glad we endured a couple months of brian park condescendingly talking about the users of this site being concerned about a paywall, only to have the exact scenario pan out in less than a year.

It just means we'll miss it less when it goes.

Don’t forget Valemount on your trip to Northern BC…amazing trails and Three Ranges Brewing for your post ride refreshments.
  • 1 0
Was surprised it wasn't mentioned. But I guess it's sort of on that number 5 to number 16 highway route to Jasper and less northerly. Valemount is a pretty special spot

Great video and hats off to the PG crew for those wicked trails at Pidherny!!

Seems fun in a very PNW way. You’ll take my parking lot high lifes from my cold, dead hands, though.

At 8:08 in the video, it says that the Prince George Cycling Club was formed in the year 2009. That is false! I've raced before 2009 in PGCC races, and I know they have organized races since at least the early 1980's. The club has had years where it organized no races, but it never stopped existing.
  • 3 0
It's true! The PGCC has been around since forever. It almost died in there a few times but this year it hit almost 500 members!
  • 3 0
Agreed, it's been around for a heck of a lot longer than that. I'm guessing here but maybe Devon could have meant the Pidherny Rec Site was created in 2009.

despite having 5 high quality brewpubs and some killer riding Kamloops didn't make the list and I would guess its all to do with the lack of a single cohesive mountain biking club.
  • 5 0
Kamloops is all killer for sure but is not in Northern BC!

 @freeinpg: and now I realize I didn’t read the damn title(s) properly.

Thanks!

I've been getting bootlegged shipments of Sherwood's Coast Mountain Pilsner to Whistler and converting my new hipster friends to back to lager.

All them trails to ride, and no IPA.

A guy being infatuated with beer is just the cousin to the dork who loves weed so much they have pot leaves all over their clothes.

I bet your fun at parties
  • 14 1
 @DizzyNinja: what’s a party?
  • 7 0
@arrowheadrush: This is Pinkbike mate. Enjoyment of things is strictly prohibited here.
  • 7 0
Well, Hops and Cannabis are closely related cousins too, so that's kind of fitting.

" In 2002, a group of plant and molecular biologists in the US and UK looked at the structural characteristics, cellular organelles, latex-producing-properties (or lack thereof) and DNA sequences of a select number of genes for all of the plants originally in Urticales and related taxa. The upshot: by comparing sequences of rbcL, trnL-F, ndhF and matK DNA regions, they confirmed that Humulus and Cannabis were very closely related and belonged in a single family, Cannabinaceae. They also found that the Cannabinaceae family shares a common ancestor with other families, and thus all of those families needed to be lumped together. Confusingly, because Cannabinaceae is the older name, this bigger group is also called Cannabinaceae, under the order Rosales."
