'Ale Trails' is a doc style mini-series looking at the intersection between mountain biking and local craft breweries, and how both work to support and enhance their community. Join us, as we explore the wilds of Northern BC, showcasing the uniqueness of Prince George, Terrace and Smithers, and meeting the proud, passionate locals that call these tight-knit communities home.
Prince George. The largest city in Northern BC has a blossoming craft beer and mountain bike scene. Between its 2 breweries, Trench Brewing & Crossroads Brewery and Distillery, and the constantly expanding Pidherny trail network, there’s enough variety to keep any seasoned rider and craft beer aficionado occupied.
Smithers, nestled in the Bulkley Valley, is driven by a passionate population. It’s trail system, grown from hardcore locals in the 90’s has evolved into a modern network of sustainable all-mountain trails and it’s breweries, Smithers Brewing and Bulkley Valley Brewing, will greet you with the warm atmosphere of the North, and flavours to keep your thirst well and truly quenched.
Terrace has a history of being a very technical location, but over recent years, has utilized grants to expand and create new, mixed ability trails that allow every ability of rider to have fun.
Home to Sherwood Mountain Brewing, the Terrace craft beer scene brings a variety of beer styles and flavours into what has typically been a very Lager based town.

Don't drink and ride kids!
I look back fondly to the mid 90's when I was learning to ride on my brand-new hardtail with gripshift and 2 inches of terrible front suspension, my buddy on a Costco mtn bike, riding hiking trails or in the same area as the dirt bikes. But do I want to go back? not a chance! Amazing bikes, sanctioned trails built for all types of riding, dedicated areas... AND you can still drink cheap beer post ride if that's your thing!
It's all about single origin...
Thanks!
@Glory831Guy: "Hold my beer"
@unrooted: "A guy being infatuated with beer is just the cousin to the dork who loves weed so much they have pot leaves all over their clothes."
I do find that if I avoid post ride pub beers, I sleep much better, have more time with my family, time to work on bikes after they go to bed, and way more $ to spend on bikes.
Learn how to home-brew, and even then, sobriety is still a beautiful thing that makes me walk away from the kegerator with sparkling water instead of beer half the time.
Drinking is kinda a false bill of sale; rarely have I heard anyone say they're really glad they drank alcohol the night before.
Now good coffee in the morning, on the other hand...
It is true, actually.

It does have alcohol, so not exceeding 2 drinks a day for adult males is always suggested by doctors. In moderation however, beer can have up to 10% of your daily requirement of folate and other b-vitamins in a single 355ml serving.
However, the older I get the more I get excited about making a new batch of Kombucha or roasting coffee than brewing an 13.5% imperial bourbon barrel stout.
Pink Bike editorial staff - don't forget some people have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol...
Please stick to the scope of this website - it's not about plugging craft beers regardless of how tenuous the link to MTB trails are, by all means show off the fantastic (and legendary) hospitality of the Canadians - that can be shared by all.
But "craft beer adverts", sorry to say leaves a bad taste in my mouth, you could have at least mentioned the non-alcoholic drinks available, so anyone who takes their sport seriously or is driving or is a recovering addict has a choice..
Be kind, have fun and respect the dirt and everyone around you...:-)
If no one tried new stuff we would have the same 5 beers at every brewery or bar. Sounds kinda boring to me. Not that I love every crazy new sour or peanut butter carmel stout that gets made but its cool that they are experimenting.
