Video: Jeremy "Kick Stand" Hottinger Shreds Utah

Mar 5, 2014 at 23:45
by Richard Cunningham
I met Kick Stand last year in Sedona, where we rode together during Pinkbike's winter test sessions. He was on a trip with some friends who all live in Zion, Utah, where they spend most of their time riding red rock. Kick Stand, it seems, was sessioning the Red Bull Rampage site a week earlier. He says that the name came from Josh Bender, another local, and it stuck. I only discovered his given name was Jeremy Hottinger when I read his PB profile. It is not often that I come across a young rider with such a high level of talent who also has his head screwed on right. I'm sure his name will be headlined in the near future. Watch for it. - RC

I know this is going to get some heat but... this edit while enjoyable was nothing that made me excited... that was all pretty standard shit.

I know that sounds absurd but that was honestly like watching bikers learning how dirt acts around there. Is he strictly a DJ? I hope people are smart enough to realize this isn't hate but rather a recognition of someone else's skills and being smart enough to critique it.
  • 28 14
 Kinda have to agree….
  • 50 44
It definitely sounds like hate to me, because Jeremy is a badass on pretty much any bike he gets his hands on. He also is a smart guy with real drive and talent and who is doing a ton to keep the love of shred alive in his town and the state. He is, by far, one of the most excited guys on a bike that I know, and straight throws down. Cut the shit talking crap unless you're going bigger.

It's just badly filmed and edited, there was some really nice stuff going on...
  • 20 1
A little bit of freeride is always nice Big Grin
  • 53 16
Meh. So he doesn't have access to a RED camera, a full film crew and thousands of dollars in editing software and hundreds of hours of free time... It's nothing less than the videos we worshipped in the 90's, and has some really solid hits in it.

... And I'll probably get neg propped because I told a guy who chooses to randomly hate (oh, I'm sorry -- 'critique' it) to put up or shut up? Uh huh. Wink

Also: @scott-townes: in what world do you live in that a 360 spin in Virgin is 'pretty standard shit'? Or how about massive nac nacs in the desert? You must live in a world much different than mine, because even the crazy MTB kids here in Utah who are 'hot shit' aren't throwing these (Outside of Brice, with that wicked almost-backflip) If they were, they'd probably have their own feature on PB, too! Smile

I think what he means is while it's a sick edit and the dude obviously has skills, if your nick names kick stand and you got slayer in the background it better blow your fucking mind
  • 8 1
@ambatt after reading your comment i think i have changed my mind really… he has skill and talent that is a certainly. what he doesn't have is film shooting/editing knowledge which will come over time.
  • 6 1
 i enjoyed it!
  • 5 1
I know Hottinger, well... A little bit. That kid can ride. You didn't see him hitting the big crap he usually hits. He suicides canadian bacon for crying out loud... Go hit it then tell him he is a mediocre rider...

ambatt- I don't know about you but riders who can toss 15ft. 360s and 25ft. nacs off of essentially perfect dirt jumps are dime a dozen now. I would love to see a vid of this dude shredding hard (aka suicide while doing the CA bacon line) but this was... eh. Although the music was bang on and it was fun to watch regardless.

And it seems getting a feature on Pinkbike isn't about skill (we've seen plenty of insane edits that weren't featured) but rather the right people seeing it Wink

@scott-Townes, I do know @ambatt and I can tell you she knows whereof she speaks. She is a pro DH racer, very involved in both the cycling community and the community at large, pushing for some much-needed environmental reform here in Utah (and I'm about the last person you'll ever hear say we need more governmental regulation--that's how badly this is needed), she's smart, literate, well-spoken, and faster than you. Have a nice day.
  • 16 4
I actually find the remark “Cut the shit talking crap unless you're going bigger” totally irrelevant. In order to formulate a compelling sport-movie review, you just need a good knowledge of standard videos and athletes level. You certainly don’t need to be a movie maker or an outstanding athlete.
  • 8 6
@scott-townes i totally know where you are coming from, and you are from that area and you have probably ridden some of those trails, but unless you can ride t the same level as him all you should be doing is saying good job. just my ten cents.
  • 7 1
I think you guys are missing the point. It isnt to show how Jeremy is better than everyone, but just to show that he has a passion for the sport that is making himself progress his skill exponentially. And you can all stop getting your panties in a bunch because of an online forum argument. Opinions are a personal thing, and if you feel like you have better opinions than someone else, then you are a cock. Oh, and @ambatt... it's Bryce, not brice
  • 13 2
@scott-townes - Wouldn't the world be a better place if everyone encouraged creativity. Someone took the time to film, edit and produce this video. It also took riding skill as I'm still uncomfortable taking one hand off the bars. Never mind some of that stuff.

If you didn't like it fine. Watch something else; there's plenty on content on other MB sites.

I liked it and if i didn't, I'd have a cup of tea and watch something else.

If only one person enjoys this video it was worth making, as you've given someone else joy.

Now go and make your own video, post it on PB and I shall watch it. I may or may not enjoy it; but i certainly won't be negative about it.

Nice riding Jeremy Smile

Scott Townes is a dick. Slayer rocks !!! Nice vid bro.
  • 9 1
Settle down, scott-townes is just doing his thing: trolling4props.
Nice thinly veiled hate disguised as being smart enough to have an opinion (critique).
  • 10 0
@scott towns Id like to see you do bettere especially after watching your vids. "honestly like wathching bikers learning how dirt acts around there" sounds a little more like hate than "crtitique"
  • 9 0
You guys are a bunch of jaded mother f'ers. This kid can probably ride better than 99.99% of you. And music is better than that pseudo rap you would use in your videos.
  • 3 0
 narr don't really like rap
  • 12 10
Man, you people have very thin skin... the reason it gets so many "props" is because people agree with it and it's the internet. If you think I'm being mean, that's your interpretation of it. You all act like you've absolutely loved every edit you've ever witnessed simply because it includes a mtb. Chill out and think a little before sending off into an angry response, although it is very hilarious how personal some of you take it.

If you really loved his edit and you're so sure of how hard he can send it, then why get worked up over something that you know to be false? His riding will speak for itself and that's all this is about, an edit of his riding which is put on a public domain to be viewed by people with different tastes that also don't know a single thing about him as a person.
  • 9 2
Sorry 'bout that! And you're right, @slc-ripper: online opinions are certainly 'to each their own'. However, Jeremy is a rad kid who throws down. And while this may not be the best video edit on PB amongst the thousands of videos uploaded on a weekly basis, Scott-Townes attempting to disguise his opinion-branded hate as a 'critique' is bullshit, and the world could use a lot more positivity and a lot less bullshit hatred. And that's my honest opinion about his opinion. But hey -- I'm of the firm belief that riding more and keyboard jockeying less is a good way to live. Smile

Just remember, kids: Shit-slinging is all fun and games until someone gets pinkeye. Wink
  • 7 8
Again, it's your personal interpretation coming into play so if you see some underlying "hate" then well, have fun with that. My personal interpretation is f*ck bob costas.
  • 1 1
 get cut much...
  • 3 0
Yeah he's not gonna win any gold or diamonds with that stuff, but it's still solid riding. You throw in a solid steezy nac into it & I'm happy to watch. I honestly didn't see anything wrong with it except it started off really weak & without knowing the guy ahead of time the first impressions were mostly formed with that boring beginning shit. ambatt kinda sounds like she's his GF or something. Big Grin

I'd rather watch this dude chuck nacs & superman step-downs over a lot of the lame assed DH ride down the trail bullshit that pollutes a lot of videos that people actually try to sell. Good job with the music too. Need more metal & less........ not metal (a.k.a. shit).
  • 4 1
i have to agree with scott-townes, its not hate at all, its a criticism. i am an amateur photographer/filmmaker, and id much rather get 5 reviews that tell me where i lacked than 100 that tell me its wonderful. it is a valid critique, as i felt throughout the video that this is all stuff that I've seen over and over in PB videos. sure i can't do any of it, and I'm sure that this rider is better than the video portrayed, but I'm not criticizing the rider, but the edit itself, the film work the angles all that stuff just isn't up to par with the rider, or at least what they could be. i feel that all together this video doesnt do justice the kind of riding this guy really can do, i mean when the rider lands outside of the frame i have to believe that he crashed, otherwise they would have shown it, or at least attempted to do a better job framing the film.
im not saying the rider sucked, I'm saying that the edit sucked at showing how good the rider really is.

 They had me at SLAYER!
  • 2 0
@scott-townes the stuff in your vids is pretty standard shit.

hahaha, exactly @Lolo-the-frenchie! Reminds me of NWD 1 or 2...
  • 2 0
the suicide off the big drop towards the end was a banger in my book, sick edit
  • 30 0
His style reminds me of Wil White.
  • 7 3
cos he's got long blonde hair?
nah, your right it feels similar
  • 3 0
Yeah I went straight to watching the video and I thought it was him because of such a similar style in that they can both ride big bike like DJers.
  • 2 0
They ride together, at least they were when I was there.
  • 3 0
Exactly what I was thinking, and it's not just the hair. Their riding styles are similar. And although many of us could ride these trails, not many are gonna throw 3's and suicides off those hits. I personally don't like White's style, or Kick Stands for that matter, but you gotta admit that they have skills and go big!!
  • 2 0
Ahhhhhh dhftw1231 ya f*ckin' beat me to it ya f*cker! Ya done beat me to it. Total Wil White vibe to that. Even just the riding without the Utah & the hair still feels like Wil White. Not sayin' that's a good thing or anything, just sayin' I'd guess it was Wil if I hadn't known otherwise.
  • 1 0
They are friends and have ridden together for years
  • 1 0
 thats cool

Is that 2 videos in one month with Slayer soundtracks? Is MTB finally moving away from music made on a computer? Do dreams really come true?

 God, I hope so.

@keystone5. 90s punk rock? I can't even think of a memorable punk rock band to come out of the 90s. Go back another decade bro.
  • 4 3
 @shami (cough) Offspring
  • 5 2
Offspring? Really? That's a sorry excuse for punk rock. Try some Black Flag or Bad Brains or the Minutemen or Nomeansno, or some of the British stuff GBH or Conflict. Offspring is pretty much bubble gum pop.
  • 3 0
@shami: NOFX... Pennywise... The Vandals... Rancid... Social Distortion... Bad Religion... AFI (before they sold out)... And those are just some of the popular bands. Sorry my taste in punk doesn't reflect yours, I didn't grow up in the 80s. Shall we debate wheel size too?
  • 2 0
He should use 'Kickstand' by Soundgarden in a future vid.
  • 1 1
No Keystone5 let's not debate wheelsize, that dead horse is flogged enough. I like most of the bands you just listed as well but 4 out of 6 of those were from the 80's. Not trying to troll, just a fan of punk rock and most of what I like came from that decade. I was in my late teens and into my 20s in the 90s and there was good music from that decade too. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk punk rock or tell me I'm full of shit or whatever but I'm going to stop hijacking this thread now.

Regardless of what people say I have rode with Kickstand over the past two years and he is a SHREDDER as well as a fantastic teacher. Riding bikes is all about having fun with your homies, not siting at home talking shit!.......GO RIDE YOUR DAMN BIKE!
  • 2 0
 That's whatsup!
  • 13 2
Love the old-school style of this edit!
  • 8 1
We rode with Jeremy on our trip to Virgin, you can't ask for a more solid dude. Everyone should love this guy, not because of his video, but because any one of you could show up to rampage, ride like a squid, and this guy would still show you the ropes and be encouraging and friendly. We rode flying monkey and old rampage, Jeremy showed us around and made everything look easy. It looks like he's no longer sponsored by canfield, so it figures hes not out there on his big bike, but some of those drops are no joke, especially on the Uzzi. Long story short, the guy can ride, hes super friendly and I'm pulling for him, this edit doesn't do him justice and the music is not my cup of tea, but its still good riding. Thanks again Jeremy
  • 2 0
That's one of my many favorite qualities about Jeremy -- his stoke and downright friendliness. It's who he is as much as he throws down that makes him awesome, and THAT is admirable. Smile
  • 8 0
Slayer makes everything seem like 90s NWD vids
  • 4 0
Scott-townes took pictures at Redbull Rampage...... does that count as going big.... plus, look at his pics, they are all blurry and look like shit... really, whom is he to critique, based on what he has posted... they look like ancient, low pix , crap NH is glad he left.....stay away dick
  • 2 0
Met Kickstand last year at the Pomerelle race of the Utah Gravity Series. Not only does this kid have mad talent he is one of the friendliest guys you'll meet. He just loves to ride bikes, chill with anyone and send it. Ran into him again down at rampage this fall. Watching him send it on his home stomping grounds was awesome. Awesome to see some pinkbike front page love for him. Good Luck Jeremy! Hope to run into you again a few times this season.

After being there and seeing the lines he was hitting, I can tell you they are HUGE!
  • 4 0
If Bender gives you a nickname, that is rad alone. Sick riding, some people are talking reckless, wonder if they could get down like that?
  • 2 0
This impressed me way fucking more than any other edit has in a loooooong time. This is the shit I like to see. Fuck the repetitive long intro techno music prefectly groomed downhill bmx trail trash. Time for freeriding to make a comeback....
  • 2 0
Jeremy don't worry about everyone "hating" and making their remarks. Ive watched you ride with Andreu, Sam Pilgrim, Antoine Bizet etc etc and I'm sure they all KNOW you are a great rider or they wouldn't ride with you. I can vouch for how personable Jeremy is and that alone will take you further in life. Ride on! MOAR better edits to come
  • 2 0
Great video, and as a rider trying to learn how to properly 360, I feel he did a good job showing the point of entry and how to properly execute the trick. Dude has some skills. He's got my respect
  • 2 0
It's been fun to watch your progression over the years on here and listening to stories from Fred and Bill, it seems like you're really accelerating now. Good luck chasing down, and catching I might add, your dreams!

For every huck, air and trick an enduro rider will be sacrificed at the next slayer concert.

  • 2 0
clearly you have skills and like to pick your own random lines! don't listen to the guys up top there.... the only thing I couldn't stand was the music but to each there own!! nice riding!!
  • 1 0
Get this punk some wider bars. The industry has to catch. Young guns like this dude demand a minimum of 30mm of bar to be unused. 30mm is cool but 50mm just stays I don't fuckin care about where I put my hands or hey look at me I'm on my dad's bike cause the bars are huge. Mental.
  • 1 0
I'm not saying this as neg props to "Kick Stand", but how is this guy rolling in the sponsors and sick bikes but Wil White, who has similar style and competes at Rampage is scraping by on his own pennies? I wish I had brands to sponsor people with.
  • 1 0
There are some things that sponsors want from you if they sponsor you, you have to be on their terms. Wil White lives life on his terms, he won't sell out, but thats not enticing to sponsors.
  • 3 0
YES, Slayer!! SO happy I did not have to listen to some umm bop techno crap while watching some good riding!!!
  • 3 1
Hey dude, just want to let you know I've been kickstand for years, you'll have to get a new nickname. Oh, and the riding was rad as hell.

Watched this dude ride around the old rampage site. He is the best rider I've seen in person who isn't a pro. Much respect, he was going twice as big as I dared go, and was throwing superman's, nacs, etc...

Kickstand kills it! Awesome Jeremy and hope to see you soon. DHM

Nice riding and spots! I'd like to see anyone of critics of the edit riding this at the same or higher level. Maybe you're just too affected by real PRO edits with higher budged. Yeah editing and camera weren't perfect but in matter of riding there is nothing to complain about.
  • 1 0
I think it's an awesome video. I look up to anyone who puts time and effort into riding bikes and making videos cause it's something that can be really tough to do sometimes.

I feel like I'm in the 90s again watching bike vids after school. It's amazin.
  • 1 1
I did that he used a Slayer song. Who doesn't like Slayer? However, if your going to use a copyrighted song, the least you can do is list it in the credits. Slayer is trying to make a living too, albeit an evil one. \m/
  • 2 0
What stuck out to me in this video was the send-it mentality. That got me pumped on riding.
  • 2 0
bout time we heard some slayer! R.I. P. Jeff Hanneman ! killer riding too! oh....sweet uzzi dh too!
