iceBike* 2016: Round Up

by Paul Aston

Madison is a distribution giant in the UK that supplies bike shops nationwide with Shimano, Park Tool, Saracen, DT Swiss, as well as a huge range of other brands. Their tradeshow, iceBike*, heads into its fifth year of showcasing the products that they distribute, and 2016 is the first that the show opens its doors to the public. Unfortunately, due to a mass of interest, Saturday is fully booked, but tickets are still available for Sunday's show.

Bliss Camp

German protection brand Bliss, are growing steadily. 2016 sees a new range of knee and elbow pads aimed towards downhill riders. SYNARG offers more impact absorption than the S2 Armourgel padding at the slight expense of flexibility. Expect to see the Cube Global squad of Walker and Williamson wearing these in Lourdes.

S2 Armourgel is a funky material, that blue blob feels like Playdough, but hit it with the miniature blue hammer of Thor and it won't budge.

Madison Apparel

Madison's own brand of apparel stays the same for 2016. The road and bike ranges are updated on a staggered, bi-annual basis, this means the roadies get fresh goods for 2016 but the mountain bike line won't be refreshed until 2017 – not a bad thing by any means as they make some superbly thought out, well cut and great value products.

For those of you who like to listen to beats when riding or skiing, these wireless Bluetooth earphones are designed to fit inside helmets or this beanie, they can also be used as a handsfree kit for those riders who take business time to the trails.

Genesis

Genesis have joined the plus bike advance with their new Tarn. Coming in at £1899, the Tarn uses Genesis Mjölnir seamless double-butted cromoly tubing and its wide range of sizing should reach to the extremes of the height spectrum.

Thule

Thule's new ThruRide 565 roof carrier offers a solid solution to fit bikes with any size of thru-axle. Simply slot the front axle into the recess and flip over the clamp, there's no need to adjust for different axle sizes and can be locked with a key. Having to remove the front wheel creates a bit more work than a rack that accepts a complete bike, but at least thieves can't grab the bike and ride away when the front wheel is inside the car.

Gamut

Nothing that we haven't seen before from Gamut, but their anticipated Podium pedals are finally in stock. The £109 Podiums are based on the original pedal from Point One Racing. This new version is said to have increased strength and durability with four sealed cartridge bearings per pedal. The 100mm x 100mm platform is between 8 and 10mm thick in its concave profile, and weigh in at 298 grams per pair with a cro-mo axle. One of the main features are the custom, hollow-core alloy pins which are ideal for the ham-fisted, and hooved amongst you. The tapered shape means however mashed they get it should be possible to remove them using the Allen key on the back of the body, if you round off the Allen-key head the pins can be crushed flat using a pair of pliers then unscrewed.

I really hope those bluetooth speakers don't become popular. I really don't want to hear anybodys music or phone calls when out riding. Its bad enough having every other moron blasting out tunes on the streets and on public transport. Get headphones or leave it at home, its just noise pollution.
  • 58 4
Agreed, I hate it at ski resorts

Ha, been using the buckshot for years out riding. For one, it's a ton safer than headphones as people hear you coming and you can hear them coming. I've never had a single person even give me a dirty look for listening to my music on the trail. I even ride in a group where most of us have one, haven't had a single problem with us or others yet.

In short, it's something for people like you who probably bitch about everything, to bitch about
  • 112 8
andnyleswillriot, I'm glad I don't live anywhere near you! I also wouldn't recommend headphones, they are just quieter than speakers to those around you. There are plenty of people (others enjoying the outdoors) who get into the countryside to get some peace, tranquility and to enjoy the sounds of nature. Try thinking about them and not yourself. Being polite and having some courtesy isn't being bitchy.
  • 24 14
I think there's a difference between blasting music at a ski resort and on a local trail. I get super stoked when someone skis past me while blasting their music, and so does everyone else around me. But if someone was blasting their music on a trail where I want to get away and only listen to nature, I would get pretty annoyed.

Fact remains, you're the only one to ever hear bitch about it. Most other trail users have positive comments, or even ask about it and it sparks up conversation. See the video about stewardship? Did you ever come to think you're the one being selfish for thinking nature is all yours to be "tranquil" in. It's easy enough to pedal away if it bothers you. Stop being so sensitive and send it
  • 40 3
@andnyleswillriot - If I were you I would ponder if everyone who didn't stop to ask you questions, thought it was annoying and simply took your advice and pedalled away. You seem to have a very selfish perspective on this...

Don't wanna hear these in my woods. Of course I won't make a fuss if someone does unless it is LOUD.
  • 29 2
I listen to music with one earbud in on the climbs. Makes them less painful. However, I never put both in or turn it up so everyone can hear it. Listening to music is fine, just be respectful of other riders.
  • 44 11
TURN THAT CRAP BLUETOOTH MUSIC OFF IN THE WOODS PERIOD!
  • 8 1
I dunno, music is sometimes a great motivator. There's been the occasional moment on long climbs I wish I had music to spin to. The only reason I haven't is I know how annoying it would be for others.
  • 41 2
@andnyleswillriot - Of course nobody says anything, I didn't go mountain biking to confront an idiot, I just want to spend time in the woods on my bike. When I want to confront an idiot, I go to the internet! BT speakers have no place on the trails.
  • 11 0
as a person that takes the train to work...AMEN. it blows my mind now that so many people don't seem to have the capacity to just be with themselves without an added electronic stimulus (cell phone/gadget/music)

I dout very much someones music passing by for 5 sec will ruin ur outdoor experience... hate this music or that music, if your fav song was bumpin down the trail for those 5 sec, and u still mad, go jump into a cold water lake, better yet do it naked
  • 10 0
What about those situations where you're out in the mountains alone, on a trail with nobody else on it, so you play music on your speaker as a warning to any local grizzly bears that you are coming through?
  • 12 0
@dethphist. Or moo cows in England.
  • 9 0
POLAND HERE: most of teenagers nowadays always play polish-rap sh*t or some unable to listen "modern" electronic , so called 'music'- from their smartphones, and they feel great with that, of course without any kind of speakers or something like that. In bus, metro, trains (rarely), and even sitting in the park and drinking cheap wine-like, about fifteen % of alcohol products (less than 1 Euro for a 0,7-1 litre bottle). Just a great example, how poor music can be played with one bad speaker from the phone, and how the teenagers 'culture' looks in my country Smile

@andnyleswillriot - Next time I see a hybrid bike with no cross bar blasting Britany Spears I'll be sure to say hi.
  • 3 2
music is a blessing not a curse. there is a time and a place for a speaker vs headphones, as well a time and place for none at all. on long solo forest road climbs, music is quite motivating and/or meditative to get you through, and I think having it come through a speaker turned on low is better than headphones as you can actually hear forest sounds or cars coming up from behind while listening.

I think a nice take- home here is that everyone is different (shout out to Mr. Rogers). There are headphone designs out there that do not cancel outside noise and still allow you to listen to music which I find a safer choice for biking. There are times where a bit of solitude and enjoying the sounds of the world is nice and on others I like some music (no doubt music that some of you might enjoy and others would rather not listen too). For me, being a responsible citizen has to do with respecting others rights to enjoy a public space and blasting my music (even in the hope that someone might enjoy my Sail rmx or Celine Dion acoustic album or may be inclined to ask me about my cool gadgetry) in public places doesn't seem to fit with that. We can make our own decisions around safety for ourselves, but I would hope we can do our best to not make decisions that negatively influence others rights to safety (being aware on the trail) and rights to experience public places in the way they uniquely enjoy them (Celine and Sail free for me please).

Ok, real talk....how come flat pedals cost twice as much as a comparable quality clipless pedal!
  • 29 0
No idea... More to the point, why do people actually pay mad prices for them
  • 7 2
Been wondering that myself, especially since the Saint pedals are dirt cheap and provide a great platfrom and waesome grip for halfthe price Smile
  • 2 1
They're not all created equal and all feet are different. So what works for you doesn't work for me. I had the saints and didn't like them. I felt like they weren't long enough under foot. I rode with the moove torque pedals and really liked them. Granted, they were in the same price point. I got to ride some chromag Contac and really liked how those felt. $100 later, I had new pedals. I personally cant see myself paying much more than that for pedals. However, I couldn't see myself paying even that much and I own a pair for both of my bikes.
  • 2 0
It's because they have podium in the model name. That implies that you will go faster and easily make up that money at the next race when you "podium".
  • 13 1
Yeah so when will I see my bearing kit for the old podiums @gamutusa ????? Nobody has them or can get them! I paid 150 quid for what are brilliant pedals, fantastic in fact. But since the bearings died they are now useless??? Get me some sorted please!!!!!!!!!!
  • 17 1
Bearings and bushings are nearly always standard spec items available from any bearing supply store, google timken or skf bearing distributors in your area. It shouldn't be too hard to find replacements outside of gamut. Check the brand and markings on the old bearings you have.
  • 2 0
@ctd07 OK where might you find generic replacement pedal bushings?
  • 2 1
@acali bushings are a bit harder to find than bearings, chances are a bearing shop would be able to order something in, as long as they stock brands with a comprehensive catalogue, bushings seem to be custom more often though

 rullabearings.com/product/pedal-bearing-kits

I grabbed a few sets of Podium bearing kits for my Point1 Podiums from these guys a few months back. They are currently out of stock though. Large bearings are 3802 VRD. The small bearings don't have any info on the seal so here are the measurements.

OD 9.92mm
ID 5.81mm
Thickness 2.92mm

Per pedal you need 1 large and 3 small bearings. Shouldn't be hard to find from any bearing shop.

I'm also fairly positive that the Race Face Atlas bearings are the same size. Those kits can be found anywhere.

Cold forging is both more expensive, and a more appropriate way to manufacture a pedal body than CNCing. Don't mistake casting and forging.

I suppose it's irrelevant as long as they use those ridiculous tiny little bearings. I had a race completely ruined because of a set of those stupid little things. Never again.

Hey everyone ! I've been wondering about one thing for a while about Bliss.

I've seen a bunch of videos with Phil Atwill riding with Bliss pants on, but never found any on their website or in a shop.

Anybody got information about this ?
  • 8 0
 It´s a team thing only.
In 2016 you should get your fingers on a pair.
  • 2 0
It's most likely either another brand of race kit have the bliss logo on or they are Bliss pants currently just for their team riders...
  • 1 0
As far as I can see there are only two protector shorts available.

Thanks a lot for the replies, guys Wink
  • 5 0
 Cheers @evildos,

Phil for example is on our team kit.
In 2015 it was only available for sponsored teams or team riders.
For 2016 we offer a wide range of different pants, shorts, jerseys so on. Ask your local Bliss dealer for more informations.
