Finals Photo Epic: Fort William DH World Champs 2023

by Ed Spratt

Fort William never disappoints as once again the legendary race venue proved why it has been a big part of the downhill racing calendar since 2002.

The Junior Women's race saw a domination of the medal positions by New Zealand riders as they picked up 1st, 2nd and 3rd with fastest qualifier Erice Van Leuven taking the top spot. For the Junior Men it was the UK and French riders who looked strong initially but as the final riders made their way down it was Henri Kiefer and Bodhi Kuhn who took control of the race. Henri Kiefer stormed his way down the hill to take the hot seat with one rider remaining and while Bodhi Kuhn challenged the new World Champion the final split would knock him 0.4 seconds back.

In the Elite Women's race, the British riders kicked things off with some stellar runs with Tahnee Seagrave taking the hot seat before Louise Ferguson, Phoebe Gale and Rachel Atherton made it four UK racers in the top five with just 10 riders left at the top. Marine Cabirou was the first to break up the British racers as she took the lead by seven seconds. Marine's time would tumble as Camille Balanche was after another World title, she led by only 0.3 seconds with two more riders left.

A rear wheel slide-out ended Germany's chances of another rainbow jersey this week as Nina Hoffmann couldn't complete a clean run in finals. With just Vali Höll remaining we were guaranteed a repeat World Champion and the Austrian rider delivered a smooth and controlled run to come out on top by two seconds. Vali Höll now continues the season with the rainbow jersey as she secures back-to-back World Championship titles.

After the Women's racing Fort William brought the drama for the Men's title race as the rain picked up and quickly soaked the course making things extra challenging for most of the field. Greg Williamson and Angel Suarez were the early favorites as they came down looking fast and stayed at the front for over 20 riders. Charlie Hatton would be the first to beat these two riders and remained unbeaten against some tough challengers. Only Charlie's teammate Andreas Kolb could come within one second of the British rider's time as he ended the day with the silver medal and 0.599 seconds back. Laurie Greenland secured another medal for the British team leaving Fort William with 3rd place. 2022 World Champion Loic Bruni couldn't back up his top qualifying run and just missed the medals in 4th.

After the exciting racing at Fort William, riders now have another short break before the second half of the World Cup season continues at the end of the month.

"Kolb couldn't have cared less about his result, rather, was elated for his teammate Charlie who'd just gone and won on home soil."

Nice touch you mentioning that. Andreas Kolb entering the finish area, first realising he has the second best time (which no doubt would have been the best time without his slide and dabbing the right foot in the woods) and then realising that the rider on the hot seat is his teamate was the best moment of the weekend for me. How he burstet out in pure excitement for his teammate without showing a sign of anger over his own mistake and subpar result was pure greatness and a big display of the values of our sport.

Met them both (Kolb and Hatton) and the Atherton mechanics briefly in Val di Sole, super genuine and stoked dudes. Best vibes all round in the pits and I'm super stoked to see the team succeed. Also so sick to see Charlie and Andi give the Atherton frames some legendary racing pedigree beyond the founding fam.

If you only want to watch replays of runs of the motorway section then tune in , compared to red bull tc the coverage was shite , no cameras on the open top sections at all , piss poor in my opinion…
  • 3 2
TV coverage was always going to be p*** poor when you have to get 80 riders down a 5 minute long run in 2 hours or so?.
  • 3 0
@theboypanda: But they don't "have to" - sure, for live TV, the logistics and timing make it really hard. But there's no reason why they couldn't capture footage from all along the track and then create a full package afterwards for consumption online. For the folks geeking out about DH, that would be a really attractive package (and might make them more likely to pony up subscription fees). Missed opportunity, because they're stuck in the old paradigm of TV thinking.
  • 1 0
@g-42: I dare say discovery had some wicked drone action planned for the top part of the track. But with the weather as it was that didn't pan out for them?
  • 4 0
We watched and listened to the race on GCN+ and puzzled over the identical 'key jangle' like noise when the bikes touched down on the motorway jumps. It sounded like an overdub sound effect but we dismissed this as a ridiculous notion. Does anybody know if they actually did add sound effects to the audio? We also noted a distinct lack of revving chainsaws. Wondered if they had either A) Been banned from the event; or B) Been filtered out in the same way they removed the din of Vuvuzela's during the football world cup. Would be interested if anyone knew the truth.
  • 3 0
They definitely added those sound effects and if you watch the woman's final you can hear a few times when they get the timing off and hit it either early or late. Also there is no conceivable way that every bike, with different suspension kinematics, and different shock configs all sound EXACTLY the same. I am guessing they feel that everyone is as dumb as they are in their production booth and would somehow buy it.
  • 5 0
Chainsaws were explicitly called out as banned. One had been snuck in, but didn't hear many others.
  • 4 0
@kingtut87: Good. Those things are hazardously loud.
  • 1 0
@Muggsly: I’m kind of stunned by this. Why did they feel the need to add sound effects?! How many other sports am I unwittingly watching where the sound is sweetened? Is the thwack of a Wimbledon serve the real deal or am I being misled by TV producers?
  • 2 0
@kingtut87: nice, they're bad enough on TV, must be shite IRL. I didn't enjoy the profuse cowbells much either.
  • 1 0
Not sure, but I think they put a mic on some or most of the riders (on GCN+ broadcast). You can clearly tell on Loris’ run (when the commentator’s mic stopped working). You can hear his breathing and bike noises, especially the top part of run. Kind of weird. Seemed to not be perfectly synced up with video though.

Thanks for the great slide show. It’s a real bummer that after following this sport through the free caster days that I had to pay some bs extra subscription to watch this race. (I chose not to pay or watch). I already am paying GCN+ wtf? If I was not willing to pay I’m just curious how many people actually watched this? It just bad for the sport.

Fantastic racing from Charlie Hatton and Vali Hoell. I was bummed that Kolb didn't get the win, but seeing his excitement for his teammate made up for it. Never saw a better advertisement for Atherton bikes. And I can't wait to see what Vali does in the next five years. Super bummed to see about 30 seconds of coverage of Rachel Atherton's run when she's the GOAT at her home race with a dislocated shoulder in her first World Champs since having a kid and recovering from injury and when she was only 2 seconds off the pace. Really disappointing. I have zero issues with the commentary, but the coverage choices were...poor.

I spoke to Charlie on Thursday morning, after he’d completed two practice runs. He was positive about the changes made and liked the track.
Conditions were horrendous for Elite Men’s Finals, save for the first 15 or so riders, and when the wet weather came in, the track became an even bigger challenge. The atmosphere was insane around the finish arena even though everyone was drenched, it didn’t dampen the spirits.
As a FOD ‘local’, I’m chuffed for Charlie, who has been knocking on the door for a couple of years now and fully deserved this success. Genuinely a really nice guy, too.

If your that invested in the sport you should know where to find a replay or you should be paying to watch coverage to hopefully reinvest in the sport for the riders....Try bbc I player you should find a replay there

@ewigstead: I tried BBC I-Player, and couldn't see it. I certainly am not paying more money out subbing to yet another channel on principle (one that seems to be lambasted by a majority of fans of DH). I like to think I do contribute a little towards riders by buying mtb products over my lifetime. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
